But Phobe and her husbandChristophe heard the screams ofpanic from the stallions, trappedin their stable on low ground. Rushing into the waist-deepwater, they waded past snakesand floating spiders to thefrightened horses. It was a daring act but in thishorse-breeding area, it was a no-brainer.“Our horses are our kids,”Phoebe said. Horsezone's Business ManagerHaylie Martin said after seeingthe heart-wrenching footage andhearing of the total devastationfrom this disaster her organisa-

Dietary help at hand for itchy horses As we once again face “the itchy season”,those of us with itch-prone horses face theannual challenge of trying to avoid havingour horses’ manes, tails and forelocksrubbed into oblivion.Even worse are the skin abrasions andweepy sores which can develop and, if leftuntreated, can lead to scarred, callousedskin. The condition known in Australia asQueensland Itch is a seasonal phenomenon.Perhaps the most accurate and descriptivetitles are - Summer Seasonal RecurrentDermatitis, and, Culicoides Hypersensitivity.Whatever name “the itch” is going by itreappears annually during the warm, humidmonths and is most prevalent in coastalregions. It is not contagious - it only occurs in suscep-tible individuals. The tiny creatures respon-sible for this considerable problem are usual-ly female midges (flies of the genusCulicoides) who are most active in the earlymornings and late afternoons/evenings.The condition occurs in horses of all agesother than the first year of life.Dealing with allergies such as Culicoideshypersensitivity can be challenging, foralthough the obvious symptoms are external– itchy skin – this is, quite literally, merelythe surface of the issue.

The skin is the only visible organ of thebody but it is not an inert sheath, it is anintegral part of the body’s immune system. If a problem is manifesting itself externally, then a look at internal function is in order. The skin is not only affected by environmen-tal factors but also by systemic factors.Managing the environmental factorsincludes protecting the horse from exposureto the midge bites with combo rugs, insectrepellents and if necessary, stabling duringthe early and late periods of the day. This is only one aspect and the search for asolution to The Itch must incorporate asmany of the external, environmental protec-tions as possible while also addressing the

internal, systemic issues. What is an allergy? An allergy is an exaggerated response to aspecific, sensitising substance. In otherwords, it is an abnormal immune responseto a chemical, called an allergen, that doesn’tnormally cause a bad reaction. To become allergic to something you mustbe exposed to it more than once. The inflammatory response involves therelease of histamine and other chemicals thatfights microbial invaders. However, in the case of an allergy, theinvaders are not viruses or bacteria but ausually harmless substance that the body nolonger views as harmless. It is histaminewhich, amongst other things, causes pruritis(itchiness). How can diet help?Consulting an equine herbalist is advisableas the foundation for a holistic approach toThe Itch. When treating any skin conditionit is vital to ensure the kidneys, liver andintestines are working properly and aherbalist can offer tailored medication for anindividual’s particular circumstances. There are also very helpful additions to ahorse’s diet which horse owners and carerscan provide on a daily basis. Indeed, a high-quality and easily digestible diet

Some helpful herbs/foods…ROSEHIPS (Rosa Canina)Rosehips are a good source of Vitamin C andbioflavonoids, vitamins A, K and minerals.Rosehips are often fed to horses recuperatingfrom illness or injury as they help to restorethe immune system. Vitamin C is a power-ful natural antihistamine.DOSE: 15-20 grams of granules per day.

GARLIC (Allium sativum)Garlic is rich in sulphur which is essentialfor healthy skin and hair, and garlic alsocontains bioflavonoid compounds such asquercetin which retard inflammatory reac-tions. Quercetin stabilisesmast cells (which contain his-tamine) and inactivates manyinflammatory enzymes. Some insect repelling proper-ties have been attributed tothe feeding of garlic.DOSE: 3-4 fresh, crushedcloves per day, or 15-30grams of garlic granules per day. Pleasenote: Garlic in excess can irritate the gutand/or cause Heinz-body anaemia*. * Heinz-body anaemia occurs when a con-stituent of garlic is present in sufficientquantity to deplete red blood cells of achemical which protects them from oxidative

damage. When this occurs, the haemoglobinin the cells oxidises and forms a “bubble” -known as a Heinz body - on the outside ofthe red blood cell. The spleen then removesthese deformed cells from the bloodstreamand the horse gradually becomes anaemic.

CHAMOMILE (Matricariarecutita)Chamomile is most oftenrecognised for its calming, relaxing properties – sooth-ing the digestion andnerves. It is also well docu-mented as possessing anti-inflammatory activity andcontains at least seven different antihista-minic chemicals including quercetin, rutin, apigenin and luteolin.DOSE: 1 handful of dried flowers per day, infeed either dry or as a tea.

LINSEED/FLAXSEED (Linum usitatissi-mum)Linseed is one of the highest natural veg-etable sources of Omega 3s, as well as con-taining bioflavonoids, amino acids and min-erals. Omega 3 EFAs are anti-inflammatory,in contrast to the Omega 6 EFA (linoleicacid) which is pro-inflammatory. DOSE: For a full-size horse - 60g of freshlyground or boiled (for an hour) linseed, whichever is preferred. If using linseed oil,

it must be a cold-pressed brand and once thebottle is opened it must be kept refrigeratedto maintain freshness; dosage 25ml for a full-size horse.SPIRULINASpirulina has a high concentration of func-tional nutrients including : B vitamins, beta-carotene (the precursor to Vitamin A), alpha-tocopherol (Vitamin E), gamma-linolenicacid (a highly beneficial Omega 6 EFA), iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, selenium, zinc, bioflavonoids and protein. With regards to allergies… One of the anti-bodies of the immune system is IgE – animmunoglobulin which, if produced inexcess, is responsible for the development ofsome allergies. Spirulina suppresses thisexcessive IgE and histamine whilst alsoincreasing several other immunological func-tions that enhance disease resistance. DOSE: Daily - 40g per 500kg of horse, preferably split into two feeds (i.e., 20g ineach of the morning and evening feeds for a500kg horse). Once satisfactory benefit hasbeen seen the dose can gradually be reducedto see if a suitable maintenance dose for theindividual horse can be found. Whenever introducing new feedstuffs to

your horse’s diet it is important to graduallyincorporate them over a period of time toensure the horse’s digestion (and palate!) hastime to adjust.

The Horse Report

Recovery plan helps horses after floodsHorses and ponies that have been caught in

a flood situation may have been deprived ofcorrect levels their usual ration. If your horses have not been fed as usual or

they have been stranded in a flooded area, care needs to be taken when introducingthem back to their usual feeding regime. There are nutritional areas that need to beaddressed when feeding horses that havebeen in a flood situation. Ensure water is fresh and uncontaminated. Make sure adequate roughage is being fed.The pasture that your horse previously hadaccess to may still be underwater or is cur-rently not accessible or your horse may havebeen moved to another area where pasture isnot available. If the horse has been unable to access pas-ture or hay, the first step is to provide ad libhay or pasture for the horse to graze on.Roughage is necessary for intestinal health, help the flow of feed through the digestivetract, prevent ulcers and as an energy source. You will need to feed a minimum of 1-1.5%of your horse’s bodyweight in hay and chaffif no pasture is available. Therefore a 500kg horse will need a mini-mum of 5-7.5kg in hay/chaff everyday. When feeding hay, make sure it is free ofmould and has not been flood damaged. When introducing your horse back to his/herpaddock, make sure it is free of debris andpoisonous weeds. Feed a ration that is balanced for fibre, ener-gy, protein, vitamins and minerals.Inadequate levels of fibre in a horse’s dietcan cause veterinarian emergencies such ascolic. The stomach wall can become eroded andulcers begin to form. Inadequate energy will affect condition anddeficiencies in protein vitamins and mineralswill affect muscling and top line and thegeneral well being of the horse making itmore susceptible to disease and infection. For flood affected horses to re-gain adequateintestinal health, weight and well-being , thefollowing is suggested: MITAVITE BREEDA is an ideal feed forhorses that are spelling or need additional

condition. The amino acid array, energy, vit-amins and minerals have been fine tunedand supplied in the correct quantities andratios to optimise well being. Only adequate roughage needs to be addedwhen Breeda is fed to recommended levels, except under veterinary advice. Increasing the amount of Breeda fed willincrease the nutrient and energy level of theration. PROMITA - feeding Promita with Breedawill accelerate muscling and top line. It canbe fed in place of a course of SUPER AMINO66 or after the course of Super Amino 66 tofurther enhance top line and muscling. Super Amino 66 is a muscle building supple-ment with a high level of antioxidants, branched chain amino acids and micro min-erals. The amino acid array targets musclegrowth. Super Amino 66 contains a fullcomplement of vitamins and minerals. Itcontains ANAZOLIC which is an appetitestimulant which also has a protective effecton cells helping to protect against stomachulcers. You could try a 14-28 day course ofSuper Amino 66 or for longer if needed.

POWER ON - Power On is an energy sup-plement. It is fed in situations when a horseneeds more condition or as an additionalcool energy source when added to a com-plete feed i.e Breeda or nutrient balancer. OILS -Oils are becoming increasingly popu-lar as a 'cool' energy source and are an excel-lent way to increase the condition of a horseand improve the shine of their coat. If feed-ing oil, introduce the oil to the diet graduallyover a three to six week period. Begin with5-10ml a day and increase it gradually by5ml a day until reaching the desired amount.Monitor manure during the changeover andif it becomes too soft, reduce the rate of oilincrease. The levels of feeding individual horses canfluctuate and the levels given in suggesteddiets are only approximations and you mayneed to make adjustments according to tem-perature, metabolic rate, constitution, amount of work, weather, climate and thequality and quantity of pasture. As pasture levels fluctuate the roughage inthe diet may need to be adjusted. If the pastures have a high proportion ofKikuyu, buffel grass, pangola, green panic orsetaria, you may need additional calciumsupplementation due to the oxalates presentin these grasses. Several smaller feeds are preferable to largemeals and having constant access toroughage is important in the prevention tostomach ulcers and behaviour problems. If you notice your horse is showing unusualsymptoms or behaviour contact your equineveterinarian immediately for an accuratediagnosis and treatment of his/her condition. Horse council offersflood property adviceThe flood waters may be receding in Queensland and around otherparts of Australia but the Queensland Horse Council has issuedinformation on what course of action should there been more damaging rains in the months ahead.Should horse owners find themselves confronted with the possibilityof flooding, make plans well in advance of the emergency. Leave early in a voluntary evacuation period. If you wait too late, you may be stuck in traffic or not allowed on theroad. Planning an evacuationIf you must make a last-minute search for shelter/stabling, considersome of the following as you make calls and prepare to move out:- Have proof of ownership and individual identification of yourhorse.- Be sure to describe your horse (stallion, mare, young unbroken, mare with foal) in terms that make special needs clear.- Discuss fencing and stabling type; what is your horse used to livingin and will he be safe in different/unusual type facility.- If pasture/paddock with other horses, realize additional risk ofinjury in turning horses in with new friends.- Know what vaccines/worming your horse has received in relationto the general status of horses being accepted at the stable. Have yourhorse up to date on vaccination to help protect in case of exposure todiseases.Couldn’t get animals out?If your paddocks or buildings have been flooded, take special pre-cautions against flood-related accidents or diseases. Give animals extra care, particularly if they have been stranded byfloodwater, and have been off regular feeding schedules. Watch for signs of flood-related diseases, such as lameness, fever, dif-ficulty breathing, muscle contractions or swelling of shoulder, chest, back, neck or throat. Contact a veterinarian if you spot trouble.Disease ControlWhere large numbers of animals are assembled, watch for any indi-cation of infectious diseases such as pneumonia, foot rot or lep-tospirosis. Promptly report any sign of disease to a local, state or fed-eral veterinarian.Feed and WaterProvide clean, uncontaminated water.Inspect feeds - do not feed flood damaged or mouldy hay. Do notuse any feed that may have been contaminated. Pasture LandStanding water may have ruined some pastures. Lack of adequateforage could force animals to eat poisonous plants. Before restockingflooded pastures, remove debris, especially along fence lines and incorners. Sanitation- Clean out stable and sheds.- Spray buildings with a good disinfectant before animals occupythem again.- Air buildings thoroughly to dry them out.- Remove debris.- Scrub and disinfect walls, ceilings, floors and other equipment.Disposing of Animal Carcasses Prompt and sanitary disposal of animal carcasses is necessary to pro-tect the living animals in an area from disease.-Search all pastures for dead animals as soon as possible.- Burn or bury carcasses.- Be aware and choose a site where drainage will not reach watersupplies.- Bury the carcasses at least three to four feet deep so predatory ani-mals won't be able to reach them.

By DAVID LOVELL BVScRedlands Veterinary Clinic

The recent rains, and prospects of another cou-ple of months of the same, poses many prob-lems for the health of the horse. In particular, we see an increase in the inci-dences of laminitis, colic, and skin disease. Skin diseases are very common and a largenumber of horses are affected. The big three problems, Rain Scald, GreasyHeel, and Mud Fever, are in fact, different pre-sentations of the same disease. All are directly related to persistent wet condi-tions and can be difficult to prevent. As always, an understanding of how they occuris fundamental in being able to introduce man-agement practices to protect your horse.Obviously the simplest practice is to keep yourhorse dry. There is nothing wrong with washing yourhorse, as long as he is able to dry off quicklyand the skin returns to normal. The problems occur when the skin remains wetfor prolonged periods. The organism that causes the above three con-ditions is known as Dermatophilus. This is a type of bacteria that requires a particu-lar environment to grow and survive. Primarily the requirement is protection fromthe oxygen and light in the environment. The bug needs to be able to hide somewhereand if the conditions are right, the germ estab-

lishes itself, forms colonies, and invades localtissues, in this case, the skin and causes disease. Rain Scald typically occurs along the back andtop-line. Greasy Heel affects the lower limbs, most commonly the back of the pastern, andMud Fever the front of the cannon bones. The different areas have some slightly differentcharacteristics that predispose them to infec-tions. The top-line usually is not a problem in well-conditioned healthy horses. These have nice oily skin and a very roundedelastic skin contour that water easily runs off.Horses that are debilitated have drier skin andlittle pockets that can hold moisture and notdry out so quickly. Their hair coat also tends to be a little longer.

The pasterns, in particular the heels, often havelonger hair and a number of grooves and con-tours that hold water. The front of the cannonsobviously shed water easily but the skin is rela-tively thin and taut in this area. The major culprit that then contributes todevelopment of disease is mud. Obviously theheels are usually covered, and often sub-merged, in mud. The cannon almost always have mud spatteredall over them and the top-line can have mudunder different conditions. The mud stuck to the wet skin provides a fivestar environment for the Dermatophilus organ-ism to invade. The organism is ubiquitous, that means it is anormal environmental organism that liveseverywhere. It is not contagious as such, it simply is every-where and is on the lookout for somewhere tocolonise. The bacteria invade the moist irritated skin andprovoke an even greater inflammatory reactionthis causes serum to exude and enables the for-mation of a scab which now replaces the mudas a cover for the organism. The skin infection can spread very quickly andthe typical presentations occur.Theoretically, treatment is simple. Expose the organism to virtually any antibioticor antiseptic agent and it is quickly killed. It isnot resistant to drugs.

From page 12The difficulty is getting the drugsto contact the organism. If the bug is hiding under the coveof mud or scab, and the drugs areapplied to the surface, they do notcome in contact. Similarly drugs that are carried inthe blood are also limited becausethere is no blood supply to thenooks and crannies where thegerm is hiding. The key to treatment is to get ridof the cover. All mud should be washed off thehorse’s legs and body at leasttwice daily and most importantly, the skin dried with a towel. Anylonger hair should be clipped orremoved. SScabs are a lot more difficult. They often are quite painful, andthere obviously already is infec-tion present, and so the horseresents attempts to remove thescab. This may require sedation.Bandaging the area with a surgicalsoap or oil, or lanolin based oint-ment to soften the scab to aidremoval can be very helpful. Once the scab is removed, theorganism can be easily killed.Sometimes there is acute inflam-mation and irritation to the skin

and a topical corticosteroid oint-ment can help. A particular problem for rainscald can be horses with rugs thatare out in the paddock where therug gets wet, the weather is hotand humid, soaks the skin, causesirritation and the germ prevails. Greasy Heel often poses a particu-lar extra problem which can makeit one of the most difficult dis-eases of all to treat. The Dermatophilus organism cancause an allergic type reaction insome horses. The correct term isan immune mediated disease. In this situation the body mountsan antibody reaction to the pres-ence of the germ which causes avasculitis. This means inflammation of thecapillaries and blood vessels.

The vessels break down andserum leaks into the tissues andthe lower legs swell. The condition is far more commonin chestnut and light colouredhorses and breeds that have afiner or more sensitive skin. Once the reaction has been set up,it will persist even after the organ-ism has long been killed becauseof the continual reaction to light. These horses often require acourse of systemic cortisone tocontrol the intense inflammatoryreaction occurring in the tissues. Prevention is obviously the bestway to control rain related dis-eases and hopefully an under-standing of the reasons and fac-tors that allow the disease to occurcan play a major part. Once the problem is established,

our approach at Redlands is tocontrol the inflammation, removehair, scab, and mud and applymedications. We also see a marked increase inlaminitis and hoof infections dur-ing wet weather. The laminitis can certainly be dueto the green grass and increasedload of available sugar, but oftenis just an environmentally inducedinflammation of the laminaecaused by continual exposure towet conditions. This is not usually as potentiallydevastating as the true toxininduced founders however themechanical manifestations can bethe same and treatment is urgentand essential. Hoof infections occur most com-monly in unshod horses and anyarea of overgrowth, cracks, orchipping allow moisture and mudto infiltrate and set up inflamma-tion and lameness. Colic occurs commonly with anychange in the weather. In periodsof continual rain, all animals tendto be miserable and as a result, they do not graze and eat as regu-larly and it is the disruption to thenormal routine which creates gutdisturbances and can lead to colic.

Understanding wet weather ailments can aid in treatment Rain scaldcan occur tohorses withrugs on inpaddocks, especially inhot, humidconditions

In recent articles I have men-tioned resistance and its rootcauses. These included the horse beingunable to perform due to physi-cal factors be they internal i.e.lameness or external i.e. poorworking area or badly fittingtack. Other factors for resistanceincluded the horse not wishingto perform and most importantlythe horse not understandingwhat was being asked of it andin its confusion giving the riderthe wrong response. The rider then misinterprets thelack of compliance to the com-mand as resistance when really itis poor communication skills thathave caused the problem. As an example of this you mayhave noticed how some ridersseem to make rapid progressthrough the training levels whilstothers seem to stagnate. The riders who tend to makerapid progress understand thetraining levels and what isrequired to achieve that desiredlevel. These riders are clear in theirgoals and expectations. Clarity isalso the word that can be used inthe application of the aids. Now down to specifics. The application of the aids. When we think about the aids,we are really talking about thelanguage we use to communicateour wishes to the horse. The aids are a language. Somepeople can speak the languagewell and other people unfortu-nately mumble and fail to enun-ciate clearly. This causes confusion. Let's givea short list of common errors thatriders make.Unnecessary repetition of an aid. When teaching horses we useStimulus Response training. This comes in three levels Ask, Tell, and Demand. Each level is applied but shouldnot be repeated. If an aid isapplied to often, we risk thehorse habituating the aid andtuning out to the command andlevel of stimulus. As an example,we ask our horse to go forwardby applying pressure with bothour calf muscles to his side. Heshould move forward, however ifhe ignores this aid we then eithergive a tap with the whip or spur. This is the second level, we arenow telling him. If he fails to respond to this aid,we then escalate and demand hemoves forward by a forceful

We do not continue to reapplythe same level as this will causethe horse to tune out the aid orbecome habituated to the aid.Excessive movement of the rider. Some riders sit still and other arealways moving in the saddle.Sitting in a correct positionallows a more secure seat andthus with training a stiller body.A faulty seat needs to be correct-ed if progress is to be made. The horse also finds it hard todifferentiate between a flappinglower leg and the command tomove forward or bend. This also applies to riders whomove their hands as not onlydoes it cause pain by jabbing thehorse in the mouth with a pieceof steel, we also interrupt thecommunication with the horseand subsequently the applicationof the half halt is compromised.Common faults that cause a lackof clarity include:* Faulty seat leading to unsteadyseat, hands and leg.* Unnecessary repetition causinghabituation of the aids.* Lack of understanding of thebasic theory of horse training.Knowledge allows analysis offaults and easy correction.* Impatience and the taking ofsupposed short cuts will causeconfusion to the horse. * Incorrect application of the halfhalt. The aid should be appliedwhen the inside hind leg of thehorse is in the air in all paces soas to allow the horse to respond.

* Heels not down and toes not in.Many riders think this is to dowith style but it allows for amore balanced rider and is safer. Most importantly the insideaspect of the calf muscle is thepart of the leg that is applied, notthe heel or back of the leg. Thisallows a clearer aid to be applied.* Correct biting. Many dressagetrainers and riders select bitswith some of the following fea-tures so as to allow ease of train-ing.* Loose ring. This feature helpskeep the bit stiller in the horse'smouth as unnecessary movementof the riders hands move the ringbefore the bit.* Wide bars on the bit. Thisspreads the weight of the bit overa greater area and thus is morecomfortable for the horse.* Double jointed, Removes thenut cracker action of the bit.Single jointed bits when bothreins are used rise in the horse'smouth and will cause pain whenthe metal comes in contact withthe horse's pallet.* Heavy bits sit stiller in themouth, light bits move.* Metals that are kind to the

horse. Bits with two metals arebanned by the FEI as there is achance of electrolysis occurring. *Correct application of the whip. The dressage whip is applied inmost cases behind the inside legof the rider as it is supposed tobe reinforcing the driving/bend-ing aid. Exceptions to this rule includeencouraging the horse with theoutside leg to steep over in halfpass, travers and renvers. These are just a few examples ofhow we can improve our com-munication through clearer aidsto the horse and thus make histask easier and progress faster.

By DAVID FARMILO(Accredited Master Farrier),

To quote Dr Doug Butler in his book, ThePrinciples of Horseshoeing, ‘The hardest thinga farrier has to deal with is making hishands do exactly what his mind and eyes aretelling them to do’.And indeed it seems that as soon as somefarriers pick up the sole knife or the nippersor the rasp, from there on the hoof takes on acompletely different shape from that whichwas first intended.IF we use the rasp too heavily when dress-ing the front of the hoof and if, instead ofjust correcting the thickness at the toe, weallow the rasp to continue the stroke to gopast the toe section and along the side walls, the hoof will have a correct toe but narrowsides and the wrong shape hoof. When rasping the toe it is important to dojust that, and not allow the rasp to travelaround the side of the hoof. It may help to mark the outer limits of thetoe with a black marker pen to stop that raspheading around the sides of the hoof. We should always work towards maintain-ing a parallel hoof/pastern angle and con-trolling any flares; to achieve this we need todevelop an almost surgically light hand withthe rasp. Use a good sharp rasp and use it very lightly- don't grip the rasp, just hold it betweenthumb and forefinger, alternating the strokesfrom right handed to left handed equally, and this will avoid any tendency to leave thebottom of the hoof windswept (see Diag 1).

Tom Stovall, renowned CJF from Texas, refers to this as RHD or Right HandedDisease and says in his colourful way: "RHD is usually the result of a sharp raspand fatigue. It's most often manifest on theright hind when an operator gets a littletired, especially at the end of a long day, andmost especially when some ill-broke puke isthe last horse of the day and makes the hoofa moving target. It's the result of an opera-tor's pushing the rasp down on the lateraledge of the hoof instead of across the hoofand will gut the quarters quicker than Bob

can get the news. Occasionally, both hindsmay be involved in the presentation, but thatpresentation presumes a new rasp and avery tired/inept mechanic ‘.(from www.horse-shoes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6597).The rasp isn't the only culprit, as the othertools all play a part in poor hoof prepara-tion.I stated in a recent article I wrote entitled'Creeping Toe Syndrome' that the majority ofhorses front hooves at re-shoeing time willhave stretched forwards at the toes, whichcauses the hoof to slow down at the point ofits break over and also puts excessive stresson the supporting tendons, and puts exces-sive wear at the toe of the shoe - all that isthe effect of those long toes.Viewed from the bottom, the ideal hoof cap-sule should be an even thickness outside thewhite line all around (Diag 2) and that isalso the same shape as the normal coronaryband.

Correct preparation of the sole is the firststep and it is somewhat of an art to use thesole knife to do this, taking out the excessflakey sole and excess bars to achieve theright concavity and to then identify wherethe true junction of the hoof wall/sole is.Too often our hands and the sole knife willdo either too much or not enough at thispoint, so it is important to get it just right. Picking up the nippers we all know that thehoof wall must be level and flat for shoe fitpreparation. If the owner has requested that the horse isto go without shoes for a while, we have tomake those hands and nippers leave enoughheight of hoof wall for the horse to walk on;it may not be all that easy to get an even cut5mm above the sole junction all around, butthat is where the horse will be comfortablewithout shoes, so that is where we have tostop. To finish off the job, too often the rasp fliesinto action with far too much enthusiasm, and it is too easy to take off far too muchwith that rasp and undo all that hard work.Again, hold the rasp between thumb andforefinger only. There are only three basic shapes of thehorse's front hoof and they apply to mostbreeds: they are either (1) round, (2) oval or

(3) egg shaped, and most factory made frontshoes are round in the front half with provi-sion for the heel section to be modified to fitcorrectly. With oval shaped and egg shaped front footshapes, you will notice that the coronaryband above is usually round, indicating thatthis is the desired shape of the hoof so youjust need to control the flares in the distortedwalls. Yes they are flares, and need to be con-trolled. There is no such thing as a naturalflare in the hoof. The natural shape of the hind hoof has a nar-row toe with slightly curved sides back tothe heels, and the white line in the bottom ofthe hoof also confirms this, as does the nor-mal shape of the coronary band of the hinds. Careful use of the rasp to control this shapeis essential to enable the horse to standstraight behind with no outside flare, because that flare will cause the horse topoint out cow hocked (see Diag 3) and toalso develop back strain.

Sadly some factory-produced hind shoes arenow being made with left and right profilesand it is my belief that if we follow theirtrend, it does not help us to prepare the hoofcorrectly for the horse. The horse's hoof is the same as it always hasbeen, but opportunistic marketing willalways offer us a band aid to use instead ofdoing the job properly in the first place. In conclusion I stress the need to be fullyaware of the expectations of the horse ownerand the horse's mobility before starting thejob: use good sharp tools and use them lov-ingly, don't use them as weapons of massdestruction.00www.horsefarrier.com.auPH 0418-835-186 [email protected]
