What does a piranha look like?

• Black with yellow spots, red belly, and a little of bit of green on their fins.

• They range from 1 ½ to 2 feet long.

• They have a bulldog face with a large lower jaw and many razor sharp teeth.

Where Do They Live?

• South America rainforest east of the Andes mountains.

• They swim in tropical rivers.

What do Piranhas Eat?

• They eat fish and land animals.

• Including: crustaceans, insects, birds, rodents, capybaras, sometimes their own young, and dead meat found in the river.

How does the piranha’s body help it survive?• Even though the piranha is usually small,

their teeth interlock in powerful jaws which allow it to tear and rip flesh.

• Their victims are smaller than themselves like insects and small fish.

• The piranha eats

ferociously like it

hasn’t eaten in

100 days.

Interesting Facts

• Female piranhas lay about 5,000 eggs.

• Piranhas swim in large schools to stay safe.

• They are attracted to the scent of blood.

• They eat fruit and seeds.• They rarely eat human

beings unless they can’t find other food.
