The Incredible Pump
Your Heart Anatomy
Terms
• Artery • Atria • Diastole • Systole • Automatism • Capillary • Electrical conduction • Vein • EKG/ECG • Intercostal space ( ICS) • Leads • Ventricles
The heart
• Hollow muscle • Size of your fist• Beats
– 100,000 x/day – 2000 gallons of blood
• Location:– diagonally in mediastinum – B/T lungs
• Base: top of heart2nd rib • Apex bottom of heart at diaphragm • PMI (point of maximal impulse) 5th ICS-mid-clavicular
Heart Anatomy
• Layers:– pericardium – myocardium – endocardium
• Septum- divides heart into Right and Left • 4 chambers:– R atrium – L atrium – R ventricle – L ventricle

Valves of the Heart
• AV (atrio-ventricular )1. Tricuspid: b/t RA and RV 2. Mitral ( bicuspid)- b/t LA and LV
• Semilunar valves: 1. pulmonic: RV and lungs 2. aortic- LV and aorta
Function of the Heart
• Pump 02 from left side to organs & tissues • Pump deoxygenated blood from right side
to lungs • Diastole: ventricles resting/ filling with
blood • Systole: ventricles pumping blood to body • Record: s/d
Vascular System
• Arteries– carry blood away from heart – carry oxygenated blood except pulmonary artery
• Veins– carry blood to heart – carry deoxygenated blood except pulmonary vein
• Capillaries– network of small vessels where 02 and CO 2 are
exchanged
