Diwali Potluck and Celebrations The PTFA and our Indian and Nepalese families are collaborating on the arrangements for a celebration of Diwali this Friday evening from 5:30pm -7:30pm. We would like to invite all parents to cook a vegetarian Asian dish out of respect for the Diwali traditions. Please come along dressed in brightly coloured clothing, preferably in the style of the region; saris, batik, shawls and bring some candles to light. The itinerary for the night will be as follows:

Welcome with traditional vermillion on forehead.

Lighting of lamps and candles by guests

Dance performance by students

Music and dance

Refreshments and food

Rangoli drawings and fireworks We look forward to seeing you all there to help celebrate this important event on the Hindu calendar.

A brief update from the Principal Thank you to everyone who turned up to make the JASIS Athletics another highly successful event. It was definitely a big community event with all our school staff, many of our parents and friends and our PTFA group out in force. The new t-shirts looked absolutely fabulous. As I said at the closure we could not have done it without the support of the whole community. A big thank you to Scott Masson who was the main driving force behind the events themselves. Technology I promised last week to share more about some of the topics from the EARCOS Conference. The following are some ways to strengthen real family connections in the age of technology. I will share others in the coming editions. These simple hints are taken from Catherine Steiner Adair's very helpful blog. How do we begin to reboot our tech habits so we don’t have so many mini-moments of disconnect on the home front? Based on couples and family relationship studies, what we know about child development, and what kids tell me matters most to them, these simple steps can make a big difference. The positive effects become a persuasive payoff for all. 1. Which way do you roll? You know, first thing in

the morning: to the center of the bed to snuggle or to the outer edge to reach for your phone and check for messages? This choice is critical because it defines how you start your day, how you create your priorities. As a marriage and family therapist, I highly recommend rolling inward!

2. Up and at ‘em—a little earlier! Get up 30

minutes earlier to check your email and tend to your start-of-day online tasks before you wake up your children. Plan ahead so that from the time they awake until they are out the door, it’s screen-free time for everyone. In these transition moments throughout the day, kids need to feel you’re calm and fully present to them, not distracted. They pick up on the sharp-edged “don’t bother me now” tone in our voice if they interrupt us writing an email, compared to the friendlier response more likely if we’re making breakfast or packing their lunches. If your children need to check online for notes from teachers or coaches, make that a simple on-and-off part of the routine.

School T-shirts There has been a wonderful response to our new green school sports shirt. The logo is of course our new orchid logo and the text “We are ISB” refers to a line in our school song. Stocks are currently very low and we have ordered more in a variety of sizes. We will most likely donate our old white t-shirts to a suitable charitable organisation.

Music Performances On Sunday, 22nd November between 11.00 - 14.00, Pak Gatot has been invited to prepare an angklung group to perform at Taman Mini in a combined school's event. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our school and we have a big group of students from Grade 1- Grade 5 performing. Details of transport and scheduling will be arranged and shared next week.

Nepal Donations If you have been reading the news you would know that the Nepalese are still suffering hard from the earthquake and essential supply shortages. Our donations to the Nepalese community have been well received. I recently received this letter from the Lincoln School of Kathmandu after some difficulties with being able to transfer the funds. Please thank the community of the International School of Bogor. It is wonderful that so much of the fundraising was done through student council efforts. As you may know, Nepal is now going through a petrol blockade on the Indian border. The Nepalese are a most resilient people. Now that the monsoon season is over, we are focusing our efforts away from temporary buildings to helping build permanent school structures. ISB's donation will be used directly to help the people of Nepal. Thank you again for your help and efforts. Harold Fleetham Director

Guest Speaker Program Our first lecture was well received by over 20 community and school members and participants stayed around after to chat with Rosemary Cadden. We would like to get more of our parents along to the next event which will be held in early December and led by Matt Linkie. Matt, a worldwide respected authority, will be focusing on wildlife conservation issues; specifically the Sumatran tiger. We would also like to come up with a catchy name for the series so if you have any ideas please let us know. Once again, if you have a topic that might be of interest please come talk to us.

School Board The Board is actively seeking further members in order to better represent the wider community. Please contact me or any Board member if you are interested in discussing this opportunity. Board members are: Ollie Poot, Kristof Obidzinski, Awi Seng, Doreen Biehle. The Board regularly revisits the strategic plan as well as the Vision and Mission statements. We would like to seek input from parents and staff into the suitability of the current statements for our school. Any feedback on possible changes or additions can be given to the principal or Board members. MISSION STATEMENT: We provide educational excellence in a supportive community environment, preparing our students to thrive and succeed as responsible global citi-zens in a changing world. VISION STATEMENT: At ISB we are committed to: 1. Providing international education of the highest

standard through the I.B.O. 2. Developing ISB’s image and recognition as an

international school of choice 3. Engaging and retaining the highest quality

international teaching body across the years to support the IBO programs

4. Providing high quality facilities that maximize student learning and enhance teacher delivery of the curriculum

5. Maximizing the cultural capital of our school community to enhance our school program

Summary of School Board Meeting on Nov 5, 201

On time school fee payment has been problematic of late. We hope that it improves next month.

Two new children enrolled in ELC1 and Reception.

The school continues to seek teaching staff for the coming year.

The school is looking to purchase a Toyota school bus – a 20-seater.

We will also be looking for a new car in the near future.

Two companies have been contacted to provide offers on building a swimming pool.

The school is costing the installation of CCTV cameras to improve safety of the school.

We are working on creating “live screens” by planting climbing vegetation on the fence. This has been going ahead nicely with the advent of the wetter weather.

PYP accreditation requires a periodic review of ISB vision and mission. Some revision proposals will go into the Newsletter for consultation with the community.

Board Membership. Jim will put a note into the newsletter to gauge the interest of community members to serve on ISB board.
