To serve as a catalyst and leader for arts education and community arts experiences in Louisville and throughout the Commonwealth

To achieve the highest level of board and staff effectiveness and innovation

Discover Your Center. That is our new mantra. The year 2013-2014 brought “discoveries” across many levels of our state’s major performing arts facility. For us, the board of directors and KC staff, our journey towards discovery began with dialogue, which led to articulating The Center’s essence, and ended with shaping our vision for the future. We developed a new strategic plan and delineated five initiatives to guide The Center’s involvement in, and contribution to the local, regional and state-wide communities. These are:

VALU

ES INCLUSIONCOLLABORATIONINNOVATIONPASSIONCONNECTIONLEADERSHIP

VISIONTo inspire, educate and entertain while building life-long relationships with the arts.

artistic, educational and economic vitality of the region by providing unparalleled programming and cultural events.

During the 2013-2014 season, The Kentucky Center celebrated its 30th anniversary by creating a new look and a new strategic plan. Moreover, we gained an enhanced regional and national reputation for award-winning educational and arts programming. Presently, we pledge to continue our commitment to invigorate and increase participation in the arts throughout our Commonwealth. We even have a new tagline—Discover Your Center.

Since its inception, The Kentucky Center has honored its obligation to the citizens of Kentucky by working to bring the power and the pleasure of the arts to every corner of the state. In the past year alone, we have helped over 500,000 visitors “discover” The Kentucky Center, the Brown Theatre and the Iroquois Amphitheater. Nearly 17,000 people have attended more than 1,000 non-performance events. Through the Kentucky Center Governor’s School for the Arts, Educational Outreach Programs, Arts in Healing, ArtsReach and School Programs, we have provided unparalleled and often life-changing arts experiences to over 25,000 people in 114 counties throughout Kentucky.

We would like to help you Discover Your Center, where we constantly strive to ensure quality programming for all ages and tastes. By utilizing to the fullest extent the talents and creativity of our staff, board, and volunteers, we are able to deliver the magical and inspirational experiences that only the arts can provide. We invite you to read the annual report and learn what we did last year and what we are planning to do in the future. Let’s allow our imaginations to soar—for the best is yet to come.

We are fortunate to have such a great facility in our state, and the wealth of programs available is staggering.

30TH ANNIVERSARY

On an unseasonably balmy November evening in 1983, people from across our city, our state and the nation, came together to celebrate the realization of a vision: the opening of the Commonwealth’s largest and most technically advanced Performing Arts Center, a showcase for this area’s artists, for national and international

artists and for a variety of art forms.

To commemorate 30 years of arts education, phenomenal programming and diverse, world class entertainment, PNC Broadway in Louisville joined the anniversary celebration with the opening night of War Horse, whose life-sized stage horse puppets are emblematic of the many exciting experiences that have been offered by The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts over the past three decades.

The Kentucky Center, along with award-winning film maker and art consultant, Joanna Hay, has produced a vivid and insightful documentary that chronicles the evolution of this great institution. Through interviews and rarely-seen footage, we learn how community and state government worked together to create a facility that would forever change the landscape and the impact of the arts in Kentucky.

The 30th anniversary season of The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts was a dynamic mix of unforgettable moments, from once in a lifetime orchestral events to off the wall comedic events. Musical legend David Byrne, making his Kentucky Center debut in Whitney Hall, kicked off the season in the company of accomplished singer-songwriter, St. Vincent. Other debuts included the high voltage Latin jazz group Tiempo Libre, fun foodie Alton Brown and Broadway singer Kristin Chenoweth. In addition, The Kentucky Center and Brown Theatre stages welcomed favorites like Vince Gill, Straight No Chaser, Lewis Black and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the iconic Joan Rivers, who gave one of her final performances.

As part of our anniversary season, we harkened back to the past and channeled the spirit of the long standing and much loved, Lonesome Pine Series. Spectators were treated to a unique blend of music and imagery with The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, a collaborative effort by Stephen King, John Mellancamp and T Bone Burnett. Later, Bela Fleck, who got his start on the Lonesome Pine stage, returned to perform with his talented wife, Abigail Washburn.

Capping off the season, we stepped outside of our Main Street walls and co-produced programming at the Iroquois Amphitheater where Lyle Lovett and his Acoustic Group, Garrison Keillor, and the acclaimed Indie group, The National, all graced the stage.

AttendanceThe Kentucky Center helped patrons discover their center by hosting over 1,500 events and welcoming over 500,000 visitors to its halls. The Center and its resident companies presented more than 160 single and multi-night shows, ranging from acclaimed authors to sidesplitting comics, from world-class touring orchestras to Indie music juggernauts, from internationally recognized dance troupes to spellbinding theatrical productions.

Two of The Center’s theaters were recognized in Pollstar Magazine’s list of Top 100 Grossing Venues of 2014 Worldwide, a stellar accomplishment considering the extensive competition. Whitney Hall, with 2,450 seats came in at #26, and the 1,440 seat Brown Theatre on Broadway rounded out the list at #100.

MembersA broad and diverse membership is one of the pillars that upholds The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. The support of individuals and businesses throughout the Commonwealth, as well as across state lines, makes the entire gamut of our artistic endeavors possible, whether within our physical space on Main Street, at our partner locations throughout the city, or at numerous facilities out in the broader community.

With quadrupled numbers over the past few years, our membership is a mirror of the diversity of the general population and their interests. We welcome those with a passion for fine performances to those interested in arts outreach and arts education to patrons drawn by the celebration of cultural heritage, to anyone who values incorporating the arts into their lives.

Kentucky Center members purchased almost 7,000 tickets this year at reduced rates, received premium seats, enjoyed Members Only VIP Rooms before performances and benefited from other member exclusive amenities. Our annual “thank you event” took place on the Whitney Hall Stage where we honored our donors with a party to kick off the new season.

Education & Community ArtsARTS IN HEALING The Kentucky Center connects Kentucky artists with the Louisville healthcare system to provide healthcare facilities, their staff and their patients with individualized arts programs (music, storytelling, dance, drama and more). Benefits of the program include creative self-expression for patients in a recovery process, relief from pain and anxiety and empowerment for those with little control over their environments.

This past year, Arts in Healing increased the number of people it served, increased its number of partners in the Louisville community and welcomed ten new local artists to its rosters. Contact hours grew by 300 and five new sites were added, which resulted in over 1,000 hours of Arts in Healing experiences. This allowed 16,592 patients, 10,344 facility staff, and 2,313 family/caregivers to be served. Arts in Healing expanded its programming at the Robely Rex VA Medical Center to include additional hours in the Inpatient Psychological Services Unit, the Substance Abuse Recovery Residential Treatment Program, Chemotherapy, and the weekly Peer Support Recovery Dialogues Group. Special events included arts activities for VA PAIRS retreat (skills for successful relationships), Celebration of Life, Hospice Memorial Services and the Third Annual Women Veterans Open House

ARTSREACHThe Kentucky Center’s ArtsReach program collaborates with community centers throughout the Louisville area, providing quality arts programs and professional development, thus weaving the thread of arts through diverse neighborhoods.

This past year saw the creation of new program offerings and an expansion of ArtsReach studio sites. The new sites include a violin program for kindergarten students at West End Boys School, a dance program in Shively at city hall and a dance, drama and music program at Wesley House in South Louisville.

In the spring, ArtsReach held its annual ArtsReach Kentucky Seminar in conjunction with the ArtsReach Showcase, hosting forty community center and arts center staff for a two-day professional development seminar. Attendees then participated in staging the annual Performance Showcase, an event involving more than 200 community center youths in a display of talent, dedication and discipline on the stage of Whitney Hall.

SCHOOL PROGRAMSGheens Artist in Residence ProgramThe Kentucky Center’s Gheens Artist in Resident program sponsors educational and community outreach as well as presenting musicians in concert. Highlights of the 2013-2014 season included the Soweto Gospel Choir student matinee at the Brown Theatre, a three-school residency with the Toomai String Quintet (a Carnegie Hall education ensemble), and a Washington D.C. trip for ArtsReach violin students to work with the Air Force Strings. This year the annual Gheens Great Expectations Concert featured the Louisville Orchestra and the Louisville Youth Orchestra in a side-by-side performance of the Dvorak New World Symphony, headlining solo bassoonist Keith Buncke.

During the course of the year, this program directly reached over 4,000 people, most of whom were students.

JCPS School of InnovationThe Kentucky Center assembled an all-star team of collaborators for the JCPS School of Innovation Design Competition. The team, which included the University of Louisville College of Education and Human Development and the National Center for Families Learning, gave a public presentation to the JCPS school Board in March and was selected as one of eight semi-finalists.

Kentucky Center Academies for Arts IntegrationThe Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education and KET, provided top quality professional development in the Arts during five-day teacher academies which focused on either art or art integration. This summer Kentucky Center Academies concentrated on art integration with subjects such as World Languages, Social Studies, and Literacy. The academies were held in Frankfort, Murray, Manchester and Bowling Green, and served 146 teachers from 46 counties.

THE KENTUCKY CENTER GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS Every summer, the Governor’s School for the arts and their faculty of professional teaching artists guide over 200 of Kentucky’s finest young artists through three weeks of intense and enjoyable arts instruction. This past year marked two significant events for the organization:

First, GSA and the leadership of The Kentucky Center Board, Foundation Board, Advisory Council and program stakeholders, along with alumni and parents, proposed and secured an increase in state funding for 2014 and 2015. These extra monies will support an additional 50+ students in the summer program and allow for extra recruitment and audition sites across the Commonwealth.

Next, the Governor’s School for the Arts proudly hosted its inaugural class on the campus of Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. In addition to collaborating with an exemplary staff and faculty, GSA students enjoyed the college’s many artistic venues, including the Norton Center for the Arts, an 85,000 square foot complex designed by architect William Wesley Peters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

Toyota believes arts programs play a vital role in a well-rounded education and a well-rounded individual. Students who are active in the arts are more likely to be team players, critical thinkers, creative and confident—all

attributes that make for a successful workforce. It is impossible not to think our future is bright when visiting the students involved with GSA. They are amazing! —Nila Wells, Toyota Community Relations Specialist

*This is current to the best of our knowledge as of July 1, 2014, and we have made every effort to avoid omissions or errors.

My will includes social and medical causes, with the hope that some good will come from them that improves the

human condition. But my gift to The Center is just as important because it celebrates the positives of life. I

know for certain that including The Center in my estate plan will promote joy and perpetuate beauty.
