Gospel Project Lesson 3 ∙ The Last Supper ∙ October 18, 2020

Hands-On Activities for

Bible Application Story Point: Jesus commanded His disciples to remem-ber His sacrifice.

Key Passage: Philippians 2:8, “He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross!”

Big Picture Question: What did Jesus do to save us? Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross, and rose from the dead.

Toddlers – Two’s

Activity: Play Out a Meal

Drape a fancy tablecloth on the floor or table. Provide toy food and dishes. Encourage your child to play out a special meal. Retell the Bible story as they play.

Say: Jesus ate a special meal with His friends. Jesus told His friends about God’s plan. Jesus made a new, better promise to forgive our sin. JESUS DIED TO RESCUE US.

Three’s – Kindergarten

Activity: Compare old and new objects

Gather an assortment of old and new objects. Examples include beat-up, ripped up books and new books, dried-out markers and new markers, dingy socks with holes and new socks, worn out shoes and new shoes, broken toys and new toys, deflated play-ground balls and new playground balls, empty paint trays and new paint trays, dried up glue stick and new glue stick, and so forth. Invite preschoolers to compare the old ob-jects with the new objects. They may sort items by old or new or by category.

Say: Good job comparing the new items with the old items. God sent Jesus to make a new covenant with His people. God had made a covenant, or agreement, with His people long ago. The people promised to love and obey God, and He promised to be their God. Sadly, God’s people did not love and obey Him. They broke the covenant. With the new covenant, God would forgive people for their sins and help them obey Him. Jesus made this new covenant happen by dying on the cross. What did Jesus do to save us? Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead.

Activity: Discussion & Bible skills

Distribute Bibles. Guide boys and girls to open their Bibles to Luke 22. Explain that to-day’s Bible story is found in all four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Ask kids what the Gospels are about. (Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection) Choose a vol-unteer to read Luke 22:19-20.

Say: What do these verses tell us about our big picture question, What did Jesus do to save us? [Allow kids to respond.] That’s right! He gave His body and poured out His blood for us. Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross, and rose from the dead.

Ask the following questions. Lead the group to discuss:

When was the old covenant established? What is the new covenant? Help kids recognize that in the old covenant, God expected His people to live a certain way. He explained this covenant to Abraham in Genesis. God’s people had broken the old covenant over and over, so God in His mercy established a new covenant. The new covenant says that everyone who turns away from sin and trusts in Je-sus’ death and resurrection will be forgiven of his sins and have eternal life. (Option: Choose a volunteer to read Jer. 31:31.)

Why did Jesus instruct the disciples to take the bread and the cup? Lead kids to recall that by remembering Jesus’ sacrifice in this way, we “proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” (Option: Choose a kid to read 1 Cor. 11:23-26.)

What must we do to be saved through the new covenant? Discuss with kids that our salvation is not dependent on our works because Jesus already lived a per-fect life and died to pay for our sins. We receive the free gift of salvation by trust-ing Him as our Lord. (Option: Choose a volunteer to read Rom. 10:9.)

Say: During the Last Supper, Jesus told His disciples about God’s plan to rescue peo-ple from their sins. Jesus commanded His disciples to remember His sacrifice. He commands everyone who believes in Him to remember too.
