In this week’s portion of Va-Yera, God explains expressly why the election of Abraham: “For I have singled him out, that he may instruct his children and his posterity to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is just and right.” (GENESIS 18:19). Earlier in this week’s portion, when Abraham undertakes to serve his mysterious guests, he includes his servant, i.e., his student, in the grand efforts. (19:7). Later in this week’s reading, when called to the test of the Akedah, or binding, Abraham takes two servant-students with him, so that they can learn directly from him. Abraham doesn’t just say hbbv, Hineni, I’m ready and attentive; rather, through his actions, he teaches his students the substantive content of his commitments. But Abraham does not forget another learner: he himself. Once Abraham is able to identify the mountain of his greatest trial, he commands his students to “stay here.” He will “go up there” without them, and then return. (22:5). As teachers and as parents, for as much as we work directly with our students/children—in the classrooms, playing fields and at home—there are times when we need to “go up there.” There are issues that we need to struggle with as adults—e.g., mortality and what motivates us as human beings, to name just two—for myriad reasons, from the narrow one of long- term brain health to the grander one of fulfilling our own individual callings within our collective covenants of destiny and fate to…making us more effective teachers and parents. As we go to press, we are confronted by an Army major, steeped in the creed of never leaving anyone on the battlefield, who instead killed fellow soldiers. Does your child see you merely note this tragedy and quickly move on—or does this moment prompt you to explore our wisdom literature and consult with peers on lessons to be learned? This issue of The Lehrman Link presents learning opportunities for you, both through the LCDS Family Learning Initiative and through our Parent Association. The children we are charged with raising need to see that, just as Abraham did before us, we are serious about learning—and discerning—as adults. For our children will one day be where we are—and what we model now will still be the example they follow then. Dear LCDS Family,Teaching our children is at the core of our moral

experience.

(22:5). As teachers and as parents, for as much as we work directly with our students/children—in the classrooms, playing fields and at home—there are times when we need to “go up there.” There are issues that we need to struggle with as adults—e.g., mortality and what motivates us as human beings, to name just two—for myriad reasons, from the narrow one of long-term brain health to the grander one of fulfilling our own individual callings within our collective covenants of destiny and fate to…making us more effective teachers and parents.

Holiday BazaarWhat a fabulous Bazaar! Thanks to the unbe-lievable work of co-chairs Amy Siama and Jodie Rozencwaig, this year’s Bazaar was better than ever! The floor plan guided us seamlessly through the halls, the coffee gave us a shopping kick, the toys were great, and all the vendors were amazing!

Thank you to all our volunteers who helped throughout the day, and also to all of you who shopped! Our Nov 4 meeting was a huge success! After our PA update, our speaker Phyl-lis Kahn discussed ways to stay healthy within our families. We all learned a little something about training our kids to eat the best foods and what hard work it can be! Thanks to all who attended.Come dance with us! Join us at our FREE Israeli dance class given by our very own Ariela Hes on Wednesday, Nov 11 at 7:30pm at school. On the Road with Our Middle Schoolby Chantal Tepper

On Wednesday, November 4, our middle school joined middle schoolers from Jacobson Sinai Academy for a trip to The Jewish Museum of Florida.

Once we arrived at the museum, we learned some museum facts— did you know that the Jewish Museum was once a synagogue? After the talk, we were divided into two groups. One went on a scavenger hunt throughout the Museum while the other viewed exhibits; then we switched. We saw amazing art, sculpture, and photography. I felt like we learned even more about our religion and culture.
