Frederick French : Pennsylvania to Wisconsin, Trapper, Cooper, and Guide : His Family
Genealogy, Civil War Papers, and Murder @ Pine Lake, Forest County, Wisconsin,
written and edited by Jeffrey D. Fraser
One of the oldest unsolved murder mysteries from Three Lakes’ early days is that of Frederick French.
French, a trapper and guide, came to Three Lakes in 1885. When trapping, he stayed in a shanty on the shore of
Pine Lake about 18 miles east of Three Lakes. In October 1897, he set out for Pine Lake to check his traps. When
his dog returned several days later without French, his son went to look for him. French’s young partner, John
Bumiller was said to be the last person to see him alive. After telling conflicting stories about the last time he saw
his partner, he was brought in for questioning. Because French’s body had not been found at the time of
Bumiller’s questioning, enough evidence could not be found to charge him with the murder of Fred French. By
time French’s body was found and it became clear that foul play was the cause of death, Bumiller was long gone.
The book, Frederick French : Pennsylvania to Wisconsin, Trapper, Cooper, and Guide : His Family
Genealogy, Civil War Papers, and Murder @ Pine Lake, Forest County, Wisconsin, written and edited by Jeffrey
D. Fraser of Rockford, Illinois is the result of his research into the murder of one of his ancestors, Frederick
French. This spiral bound, self-published book was generously donated to the Demmer Library by Fraser. In his
book, Fraser has documented the tragedy with newspaper articles, hearing transcripts and Civil War document.
The book can be found in the Local History room of the library.
Another book donated by Fraser is a genealogy, Pomes family of Appleton and Three Lakes, Wisconsin.
Many early Three Lakes families’ histories are recorded in these books. Both books give an insightful look into the
early history of Three Lakes and its early pioneers.

The history of women often seems to be written with invisible ink. Even when recognized in their own times, women are often not included in the history books. National Women’s History Month provides an excellent venue to recognize and celebrate women’s historic achievements as well as an opportunity to honor women within our families and communities. What will you do to celebrate National Women’s History Month? 2010 will mark the 30th anniversary of this important focal celebration. To ensure nation-wide recognition of this landmark anniversary, the National Women’s History Project has launched a special 30th anniversary campaign and hundreds of organizations, institutions, and individuals have already joined the campaign. Every year, during the month of March, hundreds of thousands of events are held throughout the country to acknowledge and recognize the amazing accomplishments of women. National Women’s History Month provides an opportunity to educate the general public about the significant role of women in American history and contemporary society. Establishing this focal celebration has encouraged schools to introduce new curriculum, and communities to recognize women who have been pivotal in their own communities. The knowledge of women's history provides a more expansive vision of what a woman can do. This perspective can encourage girls and women to think larger and bolder and can give boys and men a fuller understanding of the female experience. For more information about National Women’s History Month, visit www.nwhp.org.
