Opening of a Memorial Museum at Bamburgh. SEPTEMBER 7th was the hundredth anniversary of the most famous of all rescues from shipwreck. It was on the morning of September 7th, 1838, that Grace Darling, and her father, William Darling, put off in a rowing boat from the Longstone Light- house, Fame Islands, Northumberland, and rescued nine survivors of the sixty-three men, women and children who had been on board the Dundee steamer Forfarshire, which had struck on the Harker Rock in the early hours of that morning and had broken in two. Shortly afterwards seven fisher- men of North Sunderland, one of them Grace Darling's brother, reached the rock. They had had much farther to go, and they arrived to find that the rescue had been accomplished. The First Account. The double story of the rescue was briefly told to the Institution in two statements, each signed by four men. The originals are among the Institu- tion's records. Under the heading: " Wreck at the Fern Islands on the seventh of September, 1838, of the Forfarshire, S. V. Jn. Humble, Master, bound from Hull to Dundee," is the list of the nine persons rescued, the names of the rescuers, and then the " circumstances of the case." " We, the undersigned, do hereby certify that Wm. Darling, the keeper of the Light House on the Long Stone Fern Island, did at daybreak on Friday morning 7th September with the assistance of his Wife and Daughter (being the only persons then with him at the Light House) launch the Light House boat, and he and his Daughter Grace Darling about 22 years of age (who insisted on sharing her Father's danger) did succeed in reaching the wreck of the Forfarshire Steam Vessel on the Harker Rock, about three quarters of a mile from the Light House, and bring nine persons to the Light House in safety; where they were kept, and such assistance administered, as their necessities required, till the weather permitted communication with the main land, which was for the space of three days. Grace Darling Centenary.Opening of a Memorial Museum at Bamburgh.

SEPTEMBER 7th was the hundredthanniversary of the most famous of allrescues from shipwreck.

It was on the morning of September7th, 1838, that Grace Darling, and herfather, William Darling, put off in arowing boat from the Longstone Light-house, Fame Islands, Northumberland,and rescued nine survivors of thesixty-three men, women and childrenwho had been on board the Dundeesteamer Forfarshire, which had struckon the Harker Rock in the early hoursof that morning and had broken intwo. Shortly afterwards seven fisher-men of North Sunderland, one of themGrace Darling's brother, reached therock. They had had much farther togo, and they arrived to find that therescue had been accomplished.

The First Account.

The double story of the rescue wasbriefly told to the Institution in twostatements, each signed by four men.The originals are among the Institu-tion's records. Under the heading:" Wreck at the Fern Islands on theseventh of September, 1838, of theForfarshire, S. V. Jn. Humble, Master,bound from Hull to Dundee," isthe list of the nine persons rescued, the

names of the rescuers, and then the" circumstances of the case."

Knox, and Brooks Darling (son ofDarling the Lightman) fishermen, be-longing to North Sunderland, did pro-ceed on the morning of the 7th ofSeptember in their own boat and tothe imminent risk of their lives, succeedin reaching the wreck of the ForfarshireSteam Vessel upon the Fern Islands;where they were detained* by the stateof the sea from returning until Sundaythe 9th when they ventured off, bring-ing with them three bodies and wereobliged to land at Beadnel, somedistance to the south of North Sun-derland." The Rewards.Grace Darling and William Darling

were both awarded the gold medal ofthe Royal Humane Society and thesilver medal of the Royal NationalLife-boat Institution. The men ofNorth Sunderland, some of whosedescendants man the North Sunderlandlife-boat to-day, were rewarded by theInstitution, which gave £10 to bedivided between them, William Darlingand Grace Darling.

Since that time nineteen women havewon the silver medal of the Institution,but none for a deed comparable in gal-lantry to Grace Darling's. Hundreds ofmen, too, since that time, have won thesilver medal, but few have deserved itmore than William Darling. He wentout to the rescue feeling that, if he didnot, his daughter would go by herself.He went knowing that although theymight reach the wreck, they couldnever hope to row their boat backunless they succeeded in rescuing someof the men of the Forfarshire and thosemen were not too injured and not tooexhausted to help. His worst momentwas when he landed on the rock andleft Grace Darling in the boat. Thatshe was able to handle it alone in theheavy seas and to keep it off the rockswas a wonderful feat of skill andstrength and courage.The Grace Darling Memorial Museum.

The centenary celebrations of GraceDarling's deed began on July 21st,when the Duke of Northumberland

opened at Bamburgh the Grace DarlingMemorial Museum. The site was pre-sented by Lord Armstrong, lord of themanor, and the funds to build themuseum were raised by the BamburghGrace Darling Memorial Committee,formed in November, 1935, with MajorCharles M. Forster, O.B.E., T.D., asits chairman, and the Rev. G. R.Wilkinson, vicar of Bamburgh, as itshonorary treasurer. In response tothe committee's appeal some £400 wassubscribed by the public, and thebalance required to build the museumhas been contributed by the Insti-tution, in whose custody the museumhas been placed.* The museum standsclose to the house where Grace Darlingwas born, and opposite St. Aidan'sChurch, where she is buried.

The opening ceremony began with aservice in St. Aidan's Church, con-ducted by the vicar of Bamburgh. Inthe church every seat was occupied.Many people were standing in theaisles, Outside hundreds listened tothe service, which was relayed throughloud-speakers. The congregation,headed by the Bishpp of Newcastleand the clergy of the diocese, then wentin procession to the doorway of themuseum. There Major Forster toldthe story of the rescue, and Lord Arm-strong formally entrusted the museumto the Institution and presented toSir Godfrey Baring, Bt., the Institu-tion's chairman, the title deeds of thesite. As he did so the Right Hon.Sir Charles Trevelyan, Bt., Lord Lieu-tenant of Northumberland, broke theInstitution's flag on the mast abovethe museum.

The Bishop of Newcastle then dedi-cated the building, and the Duke ofNorthumberland unveiled a memorial,plaque on the north wall bearing theinscription:" This building was erected in memory

The architect, Mr. G. L. Couves,presented the key of the museum tothe Duke of Northumberland, who thenunlocked the door and declared themuseum open.

A vote of thanks to the Duke wasproposed by Major Forster andseconded by the vicar of Bamburgh,and, on behalf of the Institution, SirGodfrey Baring presented to MajorForster a framed picture of BamburghCastle in recognition of his work aschairman of the museum committee.

About three thousand people tookpart in the ceremony, among them MissGrace Horsley Darling, of Gateshead,and Mr. William Darling, of Renton, aswell as other members of the Darlingfamily, the Mayors of Tynemouth,Berwick and Morpeth, and the crew ofthe North Sunderland life-boat, withCoxswain James Robson at their head,great-grandson of Michael Robson, oneof the boat's crew which went out tothe Forfarshire.

The History of the Boat.The coble in which Grace Darling

and her father went out to the rescuewas an open rowing boat 21 feet longby 6 feet wide. It was built at Tweed-mouth, Berwick-on-Tweed, about 1830,and was used at the Longstone Light-house by William Darling till approxi-mately 1857. As it was then no longerseaworthy for the very stormy watersround the Fame Islands, he gave it tohis youngest son, George AlexanderDarling (twin brother of William BrooksDarling), of Seahouses. He was a ship'scarpenter, and his father consideredhim the most likely son to take greatcare of it.

George Darling used it for a numberof years for fishing from Seahouses,and when it became too old for suchwork he sold it to Colonel John Joicey,Newton Hall, Stocksfield-on-Tyne. Thiswas in the early seventies, probably1873. There the coble remained foryears on the ornamental lake, andwhen no longer sound enough to lieafloat, it was housed in a shed in thegrounds. While in the possession ofthe Joicey family it was lent to variousexhibitions, being shown at Tynemouthin 1882, London in 1883, Liverpool in1886, Newcastle in 1887, and Glasgowin 1888.

In 1913 the coble was presented tothe Royal National Life-boat Institu-tion by Colonel Joicey's daughter,Lady John Joicey-Cecil, wife of LordJohn Joicey-Cecil, on condition thatit should remain in Northumberland.From then until 1930 it was exhibitedat the Dove Marine Laboratory, Culler-coats. In 1930 it was, for six months,on exhibition in Newcastle-on-Tyne atthe North-East Coast Exhibition. Sincethen it has been in the care of LordArmstrong at Bamburgh until a per-manent home could be built for it.*

The Exhibits.The coble is the chief exhibit in the

memorial museum. Before it went tothe museum it was carefully surveyedby the Institution's own surveyors, andwas put into as thorough a state ofrepair as possible without altering itsappearance. It stands by itself in themuseum behind a panel of glass on abed of sand from Bamburgh beach.The Institution has also presented tothe museum a bust of Grace Darlingby David Dunbar, similar to Dunbar'sbust which is in the National PortraitGallery. Many other relics have beenpresented or lent to the museum.Among them are several locks of GraceDarling's hair, a piece of the dresswhich she wore when she went out tothe Forfarshire, her ring, her umbrella,a cloak and scarf given her by the Dukeof Northumberland, a Bible given herby the ladies of Nottingham, a replicaof her gold medal from the RoyalHumane Society and the silver medalsawarded to her and her father by theInstitution. There are also in themuseum the red ensign and otherrelics of the Forfarshire and manyoriginal letters, paintings, engravingsand photographs. The names of theseven fishermen who went out fromNorth Sunderland and the record, asalready given, of what they did, are tobe placed in the museum.

Centenary Celebrations.The centenary was celebrated on

Wednesday, September 7th, at Bam-burgh, the arrangements being made

by the Joint Seahouses and BamburghCentenary Committee, with Major For-ster as chairman. That morning therewas a light south-easterly breeze blow-ing which did no more than ripple thesea. A large congregation'gathered inSt. Aidan's Church at 10.30 for a shortservice conducted by the vicar. Thelesson was from the 9th chapter of theGospel of St. Matthew: "And heentered into a ship, and passed over,and came into his own. city "; and thehymns were " Let saints on earth inconcert sing " and " Fierce raged thetempest o'er the deep." After theservice the congregation went in pro-cession to the Grace Darling memorialin the churchyard, which bears the dateSeptember 7th, 1838, and wreaths werelaid on it by Lord Armstrong, CaptainW. J. Oliver, M.C., on behalf of theInstitution, and Mrs. J. Jepson, agrand-niece of Grace Darling, on behalfof her relatives. Trie Institution'swreath bore the words: " From theRoyal National Life-boat Institutionand the Men and Women of theLife-boat Service." Many of the con-gregation then visited the museum.

In the afternoon hundreds of peoplewent to the Longstone Lighthouse,every available motor boat in Sea-houses being used. They saw thekitchen and Grace Darling's bedroom,and from there went to the HarkerRock, following the course which GraceDarling and her father had taken. Themotor life-boats from Boulmer, NorthSunderland and Holy Island also tookparties to the lighthouse, and on behalfof the Centenary Committee, one ofthe life-boatmen placed a wreath onthe memorial to Grace Darling in St.Cuthbert's Chapel on Inner Fame.The weather had changed, a stiffnortherly breeze was blowing andthe sea was very choppy when thetrips were made.

On their return from the lighthousethe people poured into the Seahousescinema. There a film was shown,called " Nursery Island," of the birdlife on the Fame Islands, in whichGrace Darling had taken so great aninterest. This was followed by thelife-boat film " Boats that Save Life."

Major Forster then told the story ofGrace Darling's life at the lighthouse,the rescue of the nine survivors of the

Forfarshire, her celebrity and her deathat the ag» of twenty-six.

In the evening there was again alarge congregation at St. Aidan'sChurch, where a memorial service wasconducted by the vicar of Bamburgh,and the preacher was Canon R. R.Mangin, of AInwick, Archdeacon ofLindisfarne. The hymns were " Oftin danger, oft in woe," " EternalFather, strong to save," " Fierce ragedthe tempest o'er the deep," and" Abide with me."

The Memorial Sermon.The Archdeacon said:" We have come here to-night to pay

our tribute of honour and reverence toGrace Darling's memory. There is noneed for me to tell you the story of thatgreat deed, which has been told so often.All of us Northumbrians know it wellfrom our very childhood. Others mayhear it told with surprise and admira-tion, but we who live here, though weyield not in the admiration with whichwe recall it, do not hear it with surprise,for after all it is what we expect of anyNorthumbrian fishergirl, and we expectit not in vain. Do not think for onemoment that I would minimize thecourage or greatness of this deed, butmany of you, like myself, can recalldeeds of courage and heroism done notonly by the fishermen, but by thefishergirls on this coast, deeds not sofamous, but hardly less brave.

" Hers was a great deed and a bravedeed, and I would emphasize that whatenabled her to do it was that she wasprepared in spirit and body to face thecrisis when it arose. It is so with anygreat act of courage. It seems spon-taneous, instantaneous, but long yearsof preparation had preceded it. Itwas so with Grace Darling on that'Longstone rock, where she had learnedto manage a coble, no easy thing in thestormiest of seas. It was that under-lying' spirit of preparation that enabledGrace Darling to do this great deed,and if we are to meet whatever crisiscomes to us in life, we .too must beprepared, not only in spirit, but in body,as was she."

The centenary was also celebrated bymany articles in the Press, and theB.B.C.broadcast an account of the openingof the museum from its Newcastle-

on-Tyne station. It also broadcasttwo plays, one, called " Grace Darling,"by Mr. L. du 'Garde Peach, from theRegional StudiH^ in the Children's Hour,in May, and tfie other, called " Long-stone Light," by Miss Mary D. Sheridan,from Newcastle-on-Tyne in September.

The celebrations have shown howsecure a place Grace Darling holds inpublic memory and admiration, andnothing has shown it more clearly thanthe interest taken in the museum at

Bamburgh. Visitors have alreadycome to see it from all over GreatBritain.

Many thousands have known GraceDarling as a name symbolizing courageand self-sacrifice, to whom the detailsof her exploit were unknown. All thathas now been written about her, andstill more the opening of this museumin her memory, should ensure that notonly her name but what she did willbe remembered.

Gallantry in Galway Bay.Award of Seven Bronze Medals.

ON the night of August 16th, 1938, thesteam trawler Nogi, of London, wentashore about 300 yards N.W. of thelighthouse on Straw Island, which liesoff Inishmore, one of the Aran Islandsin Galway Bay, on the west coast ofIreland. A strong wind was blowingfrom the W.S.W. through GregorySound, and a very heavy sea wasrunning. The wrecked trawler was inan exposed position, and in greatdanger. The Nogi at once launcheda small boat, and her boatswain andone of the crew got into it. The boat'spainter parted and the boatswain wasthrown out of the boat. He managedto clutch the anchor cable of thetrawler and was hauled on board. Thesmall boat, with the other man in her,was carried away.

Trawler's Boat in Difficulties.A sister trawler, Hatano, was an-

chored about a mile and a half away.She sent out a wireless call for help andlaunched a boat, with four men onboard, to go to the help of the Nogi.The boat got into difficulties at onceand was carried towards the rocks.

The Hatano's SOS was picked upby the trawler Akranes which wasanchored in Kileany Bay, where theGalway Bay motor life-boat WilliamEvans is moored. The coxswain andsecond motor mechanic of the life-boatwere on board the trawler when themessage was received. The trawlersounded her whistle. The coxswainand second motor mechanic went atonce to the life-boat and sounded thefoghorn. The remainder of the crew

put out to her with two extra men.Twenty minutes after the SOS hadbeen received the life-boat was on herway to the rescue. She reached theNogi in ten minutes.

To the Rescue of the Small Boat.As the life-boat got near, the Nogi's

crew shouted to her to go to the helpof the Hatano's small boat. She wasalready in the broken water near therocks when the life-boat found herwith her searchlight. There was notime to throw a rope and the life-boatran straight alongside. One of thesmall boat's rowlocks stuck into thelife-boat's fender. Motor MechanicJoseph Doyle jumped into the smallboat at once, smashed the rowlockwith a hatchet and freed the life-boat.The life-boat then took aboard the fourmen, and took the small boat in tow.

This done, she returned to the Nogi,but the coxswain found that he couldnot get alongside. He anchored towindward and veered down as near aspossible. The bowman, P.' Flaherty,with four members of the crew, W.Gorham, P. Gill, J. Flaherty and T.Flaherty, got on board the small boatwhich had just been rescued. A ropewas made fast to her from the life-boat,and the life-boat then veered her downtowards the Nogi, the men on boardher keeping her head to sea and windby means of the oars. They got herto the lee side of the Nogi; two lineswere thrown to her from the Nogi;the boat was pulled alongside. Seaswere breaking right over the Nogi, andit was only with great difficulty that

six of the eleven men on board her weretaken off. The small boat was thenhauled and rowed back to the life-boat, put the six rescued men aboardher, and returned to the wreck. Theother five men were rescued in thesame way and taken to the life-boat.The rescue had lasted two hours andby the end of it the small boat hadmade about eight inches of water.

An Eight Hours' Search.The coxswain then heard of the man

of the Nogi's crew who had been sweptaway in the trawler's boat shortly afterthe Nogi struck. He transferred theeleven rescued men to the trawlerHatano and went in search of themissing man. The same five men whohad carried out the rescue were landedat the lighthouse slip on Straw Island,and searched for him for two hours.They found nothing. The life-boatthen put back to the station to refueland get food. At daylight she returnedto the search, taking with her a civicguard. A party was again landed onthe island. It found the missing boat,badly damaged, on the lee side. Itfound the oars of the boat scattered onthe rocks. It found, too, a pair of bootsand one stocking. The search went onfor six hours and just as the party wasgiving up all hope of finding the manhimself, they saw his head over the topof the lighthouse wall. He remem-bered nothing after getting into theboat when the Nogi struck. He wasso dazed and exhausted that he hadto be carried down to the life-boat.He was taken on board the Hatanoand put to bed. The life-boat then

landed from her the eleven men whohad already been rescued and returnedto her moorings at 1.30 P.M. on the 17th,more than fourteen hours after she hadfirst put out.

The Rewards.This was a fine service, carried out

with promptness, courage and greatskill, and the Institution has made thefollowing awards:

To Coxswain JOHN GILL, the bronzemedal for gallantry, accompanied bya copy of the vote inscribed on vellum;

To Motor Mechanic JOSEPH DOYLE,who showed great presence of mind andpluck in jumping into the small boat,smashing the rowlock and so preventingan accident to the life-boat, the bronzemedal for gallantry, accompanied bya copy of the vote inscribed on vellum;

To each of the five men who mannedthe small boat, Bowman P. FLAHERTY,W. GORHAM, P. GILL, J. FLAHERTYand T. FLAHERTY, the bronze medalfor gallantry, accompanied by a copyof the vote inscribed on vellum;

CoxswainCross joined the crew in 1906, when thestation, which was then known as theSpurn station, was under the controlof the Humber Conservancy Board.The station was taken over by theInstitution in 1911 and in the followingyear Coxswain Cross was appointed

coxswain, so that he has been ser-ving in command of the boat for26 years. In 1916 he won the silvermedal of the Institution for gallantry,in 1922 its bronze medal, and in1926 a second-service clasp to hissilver medal. While he has beencoxswain there have been 186 launcheson service and 150 lives have beenrescued.

Services to German Yachts.Thanks of the Institution to Clacton-on-Sea.

THERE were exceptionally heavy galesat the end of May and the beginningof June, 1938. Thirty-two life-boatswere launched on service during thefive days from 29th May to 2nd June,the majority on the south-east andsouth coasts, and they rescued 36 lives.For these launches the Institution paidrewards to the crews and launchersamounting to over £404.

The outstanding services of thesefive days were at Southend-on-Sea,and Clacton-on-Sea. The Southendservices will be described in the nextissue of The Lije-boat.

Four German yachts taking part ina race from Heligoland to Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex, were caught inthese gales when near the English coast.

The first of them was the Windspiel,of Hamburg, which met a W.S.W. gale,with a very heavy sea, off Dover, on thenight of May 29th. It was just aboutmidnight when the Dover coxswain,visiting the camber to see if all was well,saw a rocket go up. The motor life-boat Sir William Hillary put out andfound the Windspiel close inshore intow of a local motor boat. The life-boat escorted them in. Twice the yachtbroke from her tow, but each time, bythe light of the life-boat's searchlight,the motor boat got her in tow again.

Three Launches at Clacton.On the same day, in the early morn-

ing, the coastguard at Clacton-on-Seareported distress signals four miles offCJacton Pier. A S.W. gale was blow-ing, with a very heavy sea. The motorlife-boat Edward Z. Dresden waslaunched at 3.40, and an hour andtwenty minutes later found the yachtWestwind, of Bremen, with a crew offive on board. She was dragging heranchor. The life-boat towed her toHarwich, arriving at 8.45 in the morn-ing, and returned to her station at 6.40

•in the evening.Two hours later she was out again.

This time to the yacht Hamburg.The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club hadreported that the yacht had goneaground at the mouth of the RiverCrouch. After the life-boat had putout a message came that the yacht

had refloated, and the life-boat wasrecalled by wireless, returning to herstation at 1.30 the next morning.

Two days later, on 2nd June, theClacton-on-Sea motor life-boat wasagain called out, this tune to theyacht Das Wappen von Bremen, ofBremen. She had been overtaken bya whole S.W. gale, with a very heavysea, about three and a half miles southof Clacton Pier. Her sails were carriedaway and she had lost both her anchors.Her flares were seen and reported bythe coastguard at 3.42 in the morning,and at 4.5 the life-boat put out. Itwas the worst weather the crewhad known for twenty years. Anhour and ten minutes after launchingthe life-boat found the yacht drifting.With great difficulty in the veryheavy seas she got a rope aboard herand took her in tow. She towed her toHarwich, arriving there at 8.45 A.M.

THE life-boat Christmas Card andCalendar will have reproduced on themin colour the picture shown above. Itdepicts a life-boat rescue on thedreaded Goodwin Sands. The paint-ing is one of two presented to theInstitution some years ago by Mr.Frank Garron, of Southend-on-Sea.It had been in the possession of hisfamily for thirty years, but the artistand the date are not known.

The card will be an eight-page cardwith the Institution's crest embossedon the outside; and inside, Christmasand New Year greetings. The pricewill be 4sd. each with envelope. Iftwenty-five or more are ordered, thename and address can be printed underthe greetings. The price with thename and address printed will be 6d.each for quantities from twenty-five tofifty. Galway Bay, Co. Galway.—On the7th March, 1938, the owner of the steamtrawler Tranio, of Milford, which hadrun on the rocks in Killeany Bay onAran Island some days earlier, arrivedat Casla Bay on the mainland, withhis chief engineer-superintendent, andwired to the island for a boat to takehim across to examine the wreck. Noboat was available, and as the matterwas urgent, since it was the last day oflow water for a week, the motor life-boat William Evans was sent for him.She was launched at 1 P.M., and arrivedback at her station at 4 P.M.—PropertySalvage Case.

Humber, Yorkshire.—Shortly beforemidnight on the 19th March, 1938, themotor vessel Confid, of Rotterdam,bound laden from Plymouth for Middles-brough, ran aground on the InnerBinks. A moderate south-westerlybreeze was blowing, with a slight tomoderate sea. Spurn Royal NavalShore Signal Station and the life-boatwatchman reported the Cohfid ashore,and the motor life-boat City of BradfordII was launched at 12.11 A.M. on the20th. She anchored and veered down,but owing to the very shallow water,could not get alongside. There wasa slight swell, and as the wind beganto freshen, the coxswain decided tostand by until the Confid refloated,which she did at 4 A.M. The life-boat

f uided her to a safe anchorage insidepurn Point, and returned to her

station at 5 A.M.—Permanent paidcrew: Rewards, 9s.

Salcombe, Devonshire.— The motortrawler Tarascon, of Boulogne, ran onto the rocks in Steeple Cove at about10 P.M. on the 22nd March, 1938. Herwireless was put out of order when shestruck, and she had no rockets. Therewas a very heavy ground swell, tintthe crew of twenty managed to reachthe rocks. Later five of them got awayin a small boat and made for SewerMill Sands, which they reached at 7.30

A.M. They gave the alarm and themotor life-boat Alfred and Clara Heathwas launched at 7.45 A.M. A fresh N.E.breeze was then blowing, with a veryheavy ground sea, and tremendous seaswere breaking on the cliffs. The life-boat found the Tarascon ashore in avery bad position among the rocks,and the remainder of her crew werehuddled at the foot of the cliffs, whichat this point are very high and over-hanging. The life-boat anchored andveered in as close as possible. Shefired a line and by this means got thebreeches-buoy ashore. The Tarascorismen could not be made to understandhow to work the buoy, however, andthey had to be hauled on a single linethrough the surf to the life-boat, one ata time. This was safely accomplished,although the life-boat herself struckheavily on a rock. She returned toher station at 9.45 A.M. A letterof thanks wasceceived from the owners.—Rewards, £7 16s. 6d.

Stromness, Orkney.—At about 6.50 P.M.on the 23rd March, 1938, the Kirkwallcoastguard telephoned that a trawlerwas ashore on Viera Skerry, south ofRousay, in a bad position, and wasleaking. A strong S.W. breeze wasblowing, with a rough sea, heavy rainshowers and patches of thick fog. Themotor life-boat J.J.K.S.W. put out at7.15 P.M., and went round the westside of the mainland and through thedangerous Eynhallow Sound. She washelped on her passage through thesound by Mr. Rae, Mr. Sinclair andMr. Harvey, members of the localcommittee, who went in their cars toBurgar and Aikerness and showed lightsto guide her. The life-boat found thetrawler, the Confide, of Peterhead,ashore, but undamaged. She stood byuntil the Confide refloated with therising tide, and then escorted her intothe shelter of Rousay. Visibility wasvery poor just then and so the life-boat herself sheltered until the weatherhad cleared somewhat. She returnedto her station at 6.45 A.M. on l&e 24th,

after having been at sea for elevenand a half hours. The three membersof the committee were thanked and anincrease in the usual money award, onthe standard scale, was granted toeach member of the crew.—Standardrewards to crew, £13 2*. 6d.; additionalrewards to crew, £5; total rewards,£19 9s. 6d.

Aith, Shetlands.—On the morning ofthe 23rd March, 1938, a message was re-ceived from Sandness that a woman onthe island of Papa Stour was seriouslyill and in need of a doctor. Owingto very bad weather the regular ferryservice to the island had not beenrunning for five days. A W.S.W. galewas now blowing, with a heavy sea, andthe weather was thick with rain. Themotor life-boat The Rankin was placedat the doctor's disposal, and she putout with him at 2.45 P.M., reached theisland at 4.30 P.M., and arrived backat her station at 7.30 P.M.—Rewards,£19 15*. 6d., which, together with thevalue of the stores used, were paid bythe Department of Health for Scotland.

»Troon, Ayrshire.—On the morning of

the 27th March, 1938, a report wasreceived from Irvine harbour that afishing boat in Irvine bay was flyingsignals of distress. A strong N.W.breeze was blowing, with a rough sea.The motor life-boat Sir David Richmondof Glasgow was launched at 8.30 A.M.,and found the Glasgow motor fishingboat Consort in distress, with herengine broken down, about two milessouth of Irvine bar. She carried acrew of three, and was bound in ballastfrom Irvine to Colonsay. The life-boattowed her into Irvine harbour, and re-turned to her station at 10.15 A.M.—Rewards, £6 175. 6d.

Shoreham Harbour, Sussex.—Duringthe night of the 31st March, 1938, thecoastguard reported that an aircrafthad come down in the sea off Brighton,and was firing Very lights. A lightwest breeze was blowing, with a slightsea. The motor life-boat Rosa Wooddand Phyllis Lunn was launched at 11.5P.M., and found the Royal Air Forcesea-plane K.4199, from Calshot, in adangerous position near the West Pier.She took her in tow and made for

Shoreham. Meanwhile an R.A.F.motor launch had been sent out fromCalshot. She came up with the life-boat at 2.40 A.M. and took over thetow. The life-boat then made forhome, and arrived at her station at3 A.M.—Rewards, £15 7*. 6d.

Sunderland, Co. Durham.—At about4 P.M. on the 4th April, 1938, a pilotreported that a boat was in distress offSunderland. She was the motor fishingboat Lilian, of North Shields, with acrew of two, in difficulties owing to thefouling of her propeller. A steamerhad tried to get her in tow, but hadfailed and had damaged her own stem.A strong, squally N.W. breeze wasblowing, with a strong northerly swell.The motor life-boat George and 'IsabellaIrwin was launched at 4.80 P.M., andon the way out saw another motorfishing boat, the Hilda, of Sunderland,with a crew of two, in distress with herengine broken down. She towed bothboats into safety, and returned to herstation at 7.15 P.M. — Rewards,£7 15s. 6d.

Eastbourne, Sussex. — During theafternoon of the 5th April, 1938, witha fresh west breeze blowing and amoderate sea, the motor yacht MayQueen, of Lowestoft, bound from thereto Littlehampton, was capsized abouta mile off Eastbourne front by a suddensquall. Her crew of two were throwninto the water. She righted herselfand they got aboard again, but theyacht's mast had been torn out of thedeck and she had shipped a lot of water.The men made signals for help and themotor life-boat Jane Holland waslaunched at 3.15 P.M. She towed theyacht into Newhaven, and returned toher station at 10.30 P.M.—Rewards,£29 18s. 6d.

Lowestoft, Suffolk.—At 4.45 A.M. onthe 8th April, 1938, the coastguardreported a small yacht in difficulties.A strong N.N.E. breeze was blowing,with a heavy sea. The motor life-boatAgnes Cross was launched at 4.55 A.M.,and found the sailing and motor yachtEleanor, of Boston, rolling heavilyamong the breakers of the inner shoalof Newcombe Sands. The life-boat wasmanoeuvred alongside and some life-

boatmen boarded her. They found thather engine had broken down and one ofher anchors had been lost, and that hercrew of two men were exhausted bytheir efforts to keep her from goingashore. The life-boatmen hoisted herremaining anchor and the life-boattowed her into harbour. The life-boat returned to her station at 6.10A.M. A letter of thanks and a donationwere received from one of the rescuedmen.—Rewards, £20 18s. 6d.

Whitby, Yorkshire.—As the tide ebbedduring the afternoon of the 8th April,1938, a rough sea began to break heavilyoutside the pier ends, making the har-bour entrance dangerous. • A strong N.breeze was blowing. The motor fishingboats Pilot Me and Provider were atsea, and at 4.30 P.M., when they wereseen coming in, the motor life-boatMargaret Harker Smith put out. Sheescorted the boats into harbour andreturned to her station at 6 P.M.—Rewards, £6 8s.

Boulmer, Northumberland.—At about10.55 P.M. on the 13th April, 1938, thecoastguard telephoned that the steamerMontrose, of Stockholm, had reportedhaving been in collision with a trawlerfive miles W.S.W. of Coquet Island.This position obviously was incorrect,as it was on land. As no further in-formation could be got, the motorlife-boat Clarissa Langdon was launchedat 11.25 to search. A light northerlybreeze was blowing, with a smooth sea.The life-boat found the Montrose atmidnight, beached about three-quartersof a mile north of Amble piers. Hermaster said that he had sent away aboat with five men to help the trawler,and as the Montrose was not in im-mediate danger, the life-boat left tolook for the trawler. It was thenlearned on shore that the trawler, thePolar Prince, of North Shields, hadreached the Tyne, and the life-boatwas recalled. She was moored at7 A.M. on the 14th. At midday sheput out again to stand by the Montroseduring the rising tide. The Montroserefloated and made for the Tyne underher own steam, with tugs in atten-dance. The life-boat accompanied heruntil it was seen that she was all right,and returned to her station at 3 P.M.—Rewards, £20 9s.

St. David's, Pembrokeshire.—On themorning of the 16th April, 1938, thelocal motor boat Sirius put out fromForth Clais with seventeen people onboard, for a trip to Grasholme. Theydid not return when expected, andanxiety was felt for their safety. By9 P.M. a strong N.N.E. breeze wasblowing, with a rough sea, and themotor life-boat Civil Service No. 6 waslaunched to make a search. Dr.Joseph Soar, Mus.Doc., the honorarysecretary, accompanied her. The life-boat reached Grasholme at 10.45 P.M.,and in the rays of her searchlight theparty could be seen on the westernslopes. The sea was too rough forthe life-boat to get close in, and soshe patrolled off shore until daylight.At 5.45 A.M. on the 17th the peoplewere able to get aboard the Sirius again,and she made for Forth Clais. The life-boat followed her. On the run home theSirius stopped, owing to a choked petrolpipe, and the life-boat towed her to theentrance to Forth Clais ha bour. Thelife-boat returned to her station at 8.30A.M., having been at sea for eleven and ahalf hours. Donations amounting to£23 2s. were received from members ofthe party. An increase in the usualmoney award on the standard scalewas granted to each member of thecrew. — Standard rewards to crew,£13 2s. 6d.; additional rewards tocrew, £4 ; total rewards, £19 7s. 6d.

Newhaven, Sussex.—At 11.35 P.M. onthe 16th April, 1938, the coastguardtelephoned that a small vessel was indistress off Beachy Head, and as theEastbourne life-boat was oft service foroverhaul, the motor life-boat Cecil andLilian Philpott was launched at 11.55P.M. A strong N.E. wind was blowing,with a heavy swell. Two miles southof Beachy Head the life-boat found theyacht Swift, of West Mersea, with acrew of five. She was bound fromRamsgate for Newhaven, but couldnot cope with the seas off the head.The life-boat towed her into Newhaven,and returned to her station at 2 A.M.—Rewards, £10 5s.

Whitby, Yorkshire.—At about 10 A.M.on the 18th April, 1938, the motorfishing boats Pilot Me and Success putto sea to haul their crab pots. The

weather was showery, and the seastrong. On the flood tide the sea grewworse and broke heavily outside theharbour, making it very dangerous forboats coming in. At 3 P.M. the PilotMe was seen making for home, and thenew motor life-boat Mary Ann Hep-worth was launched on her first service.She met the Pilot Me near Rock Buoy,warned her of the conditions, andescorted her into harbour. The PilotMe got in safely, although she shippedsome very heavy seas, and nearly lostone man overboard. The life-boat putout again and met and safely escortedin the Success. She returned to herstation at 5.45 P.M. The life-boatcrew were very pleased with their newboat, and the service was watched byseveral thousands of holiday-makers.—Rewards, £5 9s.

Filey, Yorkshire.—During the morn-ing of the 19th April, 1938, the localfishing-boats were caught at sea bybad weather. Several came in, buteight were still at sea. Another boatcame in and reported that conditionswere getting worse, and at 8.30 A.M.the pulling and sailing life'-boat ThomasMasterman Hardy was launched. Asqually north breeze was blowing, witha heavy sea. The life-boat escortedthe remaining boats into safety andreturned to her station at 10.40 A.M.—Rewards, £12 14*.

Walton and Frinlon, Essex.—Early onthe afternoon of the 19th April, 1938, themotor life-boat E.M.E.D., just beforeentering the Come estuary on passageto Rowhedge, for her annual overhaul,saw a barge in difficulties about amile and a half south of Come BarBuoy. A strong, squally N.W. breezewas blowing, with a choppy sea. Thebarge was the Gannet, of London, witha crew of two, and she was bound forBradwell with a cargo of pig food.She had carried away her sprit. Thelife-boat towed her to a safe anchoragein Bradwell Creek, and then went onto Rowhedge, where she arrived at4.40 P.M.—Property Salvage Case.

The following life-boats werelaunched, but no services were renderedfor the reasons given :

St. Peter Port, Guernsey.—6th March,1938. The Norwegian steamer Tom-

meliten, of Bergen, had strandedduring & dense fog, but refloated un-aided on the next high tide.—Rewards,£6 175. 6d.

Campbeltown, Argyllshire. -— 8thMarch, 1938. A vessel had been re-ported ashore at Dunaverty Point, butshe refloated and the life-boat was re-called by wireless from Portpatrick.—Rewards, £13 11*. 6d.

Portaskaig, Isle of Islay.—9th March,1938. A trawler had been wrecked atSmuall Point, but eight of her crew ofeleven were rescued from the shore bymen with lines; the other three hadbeen washed away and lost.—Rewards,£8 4s.

Berwick » on - Tweed, Northumberland.—Very early on the morning of the 9thMarch, 1938, the coastguard reportedthat the s.s.Locksley, of Montrose, boundfrom Stonehaven for Stockton-on-Teeswith a cargo of oats and 'potatoes, hadrun aground at False Emmanuel Head,Holy Island. The Holy Island life-boatwas off service for overhaul and repair,and the Berwick-on-Tweed life-boatWestmorland was launched at 1.30 A.M.A moderate westerly breeze was blowing,with a choppy sea. The life-boat ar-rived at 2.30 A.M., and found that theLocksley's crew of five had already beenrescued. A motor fishing boat mannedby eight men, four of whom were mem-bers of the Holy Island life-boat crew,had put off from Holy Island andrescued them. The rescue had takennearly three hours, and owing to shal-low water and wreckage, was carried outwith great difficulty and at some risk.The Locksley became a total wreck.—Rewards : Life-boat, £18 19s. Qd.;shoreboat, £7, also 10s. for fuel usedand boat-hook lost.

Hoylake, Cheshire.—13th March, 1938.A motor boat had been reported duringthe evening to be in a dangerous posi-tion off Hilbre, but nothing could befound.—Rewards, £25 14s. Qd.

Walmer, Kent.—15th March, 1938.Two vessels had been in collision, butthe crew of one had been taken offby a Belgian steamer, and the othervessel could not be found in the fog.—Rewards, £29 Os. Qd.

Sheringham, Norfolk. — 7th April,1938. A steamer had reported by wire-less, through Humber Radio Station,that she had seen an aeroplane fall intothe sea in flames near the DudgeonLight-vessel, but a long search revealedno trace of the machine. Sheringham, Norfolk. — 23rd April,1938. The engine of the motor bargeLies, of Rotterdam, had broken down,but a steamer took the barge in tow.—Rewards, £16 3s. 6d.

May Meeting.

Penlee, Cornwall.—During the nightof the 22nd April, 1938, the coastguardat Penzer Point telephoned that afishing boat was in distress about twomiles S.S.W. of the point. A northbreeze was blowing, with a smooth sea.The motor life-boat W. and S. waslaunched at 10.45 P.M., and found thesteam fishing boat Pioneer, of Penzance,with a crew of two, at anchor. She hadlost her propeller. The life-boat towedher into Newlyn Harbour, and returnedto her station at 12.30 A.M.—Rewards,£11 9s.

Cullercoats, Northumberland. —At 1.32P.M. on the 23rd April, 1938, the SeatonSluice coastguard reported a motordrifter on fire about two miles east ofSt. Mary's Island. A moderate N.N.E.breeze was blowing, with a moderatesea. The motor life-boat Richard SilverOliver was launched at 1.44 P.M. andfound the Aberdeen motor drifterSaxon enveloped in smoke and flames.The crew of three had just been rescuedby a boat from a passing steamer.They were transferred to the life-boat. She took two of them to NorthShields and one to Cullercoats, and re-turned to her station at 3.40 P.M. TheSaxon drifted ashore on Whitley beachand became a total wreck.—Rewards,£7 10s.

Great Yarmouth and Gorleston, Norfolk.—At about 11.15 A.M. on the 29thApril, 1938, the coastguard reportedthat a shrimp boat south of the harbourappeared to be in difficulties. A watchwas kept on her, and at 11.38 the motorlife-boat John and Mary Meiklam ofGladswood was launched. A N. by W.gale was blowing, with a rather roughsea. The life-boat found the motorshrimp boat Violet, of Yarmouth, withone man on board, about one and ahalf miles south of Gorleston Pier.The Violet's engine had broken down,her sails had been blown away, and shewas in danger of swamping. The life-boat towed her back to harbour, andreturned to her station at 12.52 P.M.A letter of thanks was received fromthe rescued man.—Rewards, £9 13s.

Whitby, Yorkshire.—Early in the morn-ing of the 29th April, 1938, the local

fishing fleet put to sea. At 11 A.M. theVenus, Success, Easter Morn, Noel II,Gallilee and Provider were off the RockBuoy, waiting for the tide to rise. Thelife-boat coxswain noticed throughglasses that the Noel II had a lineaboard another boat, and then he sawher fire a distress signal. A strong andincreasing N.E. breeze was blowing,with a rough sea which was breakingheavily outside the harbour. Themotor life-boat Mary Ann Hepworthwas launched at 11.40 A.M., and wentto the Noel II. She found that shehad lost her rudder and that the EasterMorn was towing her in. She accom-panied them towards the harbour.As they got near the ends of the pierthe tow-rope parted. The Noel IIwas in immediate danger, but the life-boat passed her another line andtowed her into harbour. The life-boatthen put out again and escorted in theremaining boats. She returned to herstation at 3.15 P.M.—Rewards, £5 9s.

Southend-on-Sea, Essex.—At 3.5 P.M.on the 29th April, 1938, a message wasreceived from the pierhead that a smallopen fishing boat was in distress offSouth Shoebury Buoy. A N.W. breezewas blowing, with a rough sea. Themotor life-boat Greater London (CivilService No. 3) was launched at 3.25 P.M.,and found the fishing boat, with threemen on board, alongside another vessel.She took the three men on board,towed the boat to the pier, and returnedto her station at 5.55 P.M. The ownersent a letter of thanks and a donation.—Rewards, £6 105.

Hythe, Kent.—At about 5.30 P.M. onSunday, 1st May, 1938, the Sandgatecoastguard reported that a motorcruiser two miles S. by W.|W. fromthe life-boathouse appeared to be introuble. The coxswain kept her underobservation for some time and saw herget under way again. Later on thecoastguard reported that she was oncemore in difficulties. The life-boat'screw were summoned, several of themleaving a Salvation Army service, andthe motor life-boat Viscountess Wake-field was launched at 6.57 P.M. Astrong N.E. breeze was blowing, witha moderate sea. The life-boat cameup with the motor cruiser about three-

quarters of a mile S.W. of FolkestonePier. She was the Kushi, bound, witha crew of three, from Rye to Twicken-ham, and her engine had broken down.The life-boat towed her into Doverharbour, and returned to her station atmidnight. A donation was received inappreciation of this service.—Rewards,£30 6s.

Clacton-on-Sea, Essex.—At 2.15 A.M.on the 4th May, 1938, the coastguardreported a light about six miles S.W.by S. Watch was kept, and aftersome time it was decided to send outthe motor life-boat Edward Z. Dresdento investigate. She was launched at3.30 A.M. A N.E. gale was blowing,with a very rough sea. Nine and ahalf miles S.W. by W., on Ridge Sands,the life-boat found the sprit-sail bargeFlorence Myall, of Rochester. Shewas bound from Rowhedge for Ben-fleet laden with sand, and carried acrew of two. Her steering-gear hadbroken and her hatches had beencarried away. The men had aban-doned her and were lying astern inthe small boat. The life-boat rescuedthem, and returned to her station at7.10 A.M.—Rewards, £13 45.

Walton and Frinton, Essex.—At about5.53 P.M. on the 7th May, 1938, thecoastguard reported that a barge lyingabout two miles south of Walton Pierwas flying a distress signal. A moder-ate N.E. breeze was blowing, with arather rough sea. The reserve motorlife-boat J. B. Proudfoot, on temporaryduty at this station, put out at 6 P.M.,and found the barge to be the LadyMary, of London, bound for Yarmouthwith a crew of two and a cargo of rice.She was leaking badly and had becomeunmanageable. Some of the life-boatcrew went on board to man the pumpand hoist some sail, and the life-boatthen towed the barge to Brightlingsea.She anchored her in safe water andarrived back at her own station at2 A.M. on the 8th.—-Property SalvageCase.

Dover, Kent.—At 7.15 P.M. on the 14thMay, 1938, a man reported that he hadseen an aeroplane come down in thesea about six miles S.E. of South Fore-land. A gentle S.S.W. breeze was

blowing, with a calm sea. The motorlife-boat Sir William Hillary put out at7.28 P.M. and found that aircraftG-ADJM had been taken in tow by asteamer. She had been bound fromDunkirk to Lympne with two men onboard, but had been forced downowing to the failure of her engine.The life-boat escorted the steamer toDover harbour, where she took overthe tow and took the aircraft intosafety. She landed the two men andreturned to her station at 10 P.M.—Partly permanent paid crew. Rewards,£6 5s.

Barra Island, Isle of lewis. — 27thApril, 1938. A R.A.F. machine hadbeen reported as overdue, but thereport was found to be only a test callby the R.A.F.—Rewards, £4 13s. 6d.

St. Helier, Jersey.—28th April, 1938.Two aeroplanes had been reported tohave come down in the sea, but asearch in which another plane joinedrevealed nothing. The honorary secre-tary of the station and district inspectorof life-boats went out in the boat.—Rewards, £8 15s.

Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. — 29th April,1938. A yacht had run aground, butrefloated and did not need help.—Rewards, £11 6s.

June Meeting.Runswick, Yorkshire.—At about 7

A.M. on the 20th May, 1938, theStaithes fishing fleet put to sea. Theweather was fine, but a moderate seawas running. A moderate north breezesprang up, and the sea became veryheavy near Staithes harbour, breakingright across the entrance. The Runs-wick motor life-boat Robert Patton—The Always Ready was launched at10.15 A.M. and escorted the fishingboats through the broken water intoharbour. She returned to her stationat 1 P.M.—Rewards, £10 4s.

Howth, Co. Dublin.—During the even-ing of the 23rd May, 1938, a convertedship's life-boat put off from Baldoyle,with a party of three men, four boysand two girls on board. Her sail wasblown away, she got into difficulties,and the party landed on an islandknown as Ireland's Eye. They lit abonfire which was seen on shore, andthe motor life-boat R.P.L. was launchedat 12.40 A.M. on the 24th, taking a puntwith her. A W.N W. breeze was thenblowing, with a choppy sea. In threetrips the nine people were taken fromthe island by the punt to the life-boatand then their boat was taken in tow.The life-boat landed them at Howthharbour, and returned to her stationat 2.15 A.M.—Rewards, £9 Is.

The Huinber, Yorkshire.—At 6.40 A.M.on the 27th May, 1938, the signalstation reported that a vessel wasdrifting to sea. A light southerlywind was blowing, with a moder-ate sea. The motor life-boat Cityof Bradford II was launched at 7.20A.M. and found the fishing boat

Margate, Kent.—At about 4.30 P.M.on the 29th May, 1938, the coastguardreported that a motor yacht was ashoreon the north part of Margate Sands.The weather was squally, with asoutherly wind and a rough sea on thesands. At 4.50 P.M. the motor life-boatLord Soulhborough (Civil Service No. 1)was launched, and found the motoryacht Mar-g-habi, of London, hard onthe sands, with a crew of five on board.The life-boat stood by until the floodtide, when the yacht refloated, and thenescorted her into harbour.—Rewards,£18 125.

Great Yarmouth and Gorleston, Norfolk.—At 10.30 P.M. on the 29th May, 1938,the coastguard reported that theweather was getting bad and thatseveral small fishing boats were at sea.By 11 P.M. a southerly gale was blowing,with a very rough sea on the bar.Visibility was poor, owing to heavyrain. The motor life-boat John andMary Meiklam of Gladswood waslaunched at 11.25 P.M., and by thelight of her searchlight found a boatnear Winterton Ness trying to makeher way against the gale. She advisedher to anchor close inshore for shelter,and gave the same advice to severalother boats which she found near-by.

• Then she saw the boat 'Brothers, with acrew of three, at anchor with herengine broken down. As the Brotherswas not in immediate danger, the life-boat told her to stay at anchor whileshe made certain that there were noother boats wanting help. Day wasnow breaking, and no other boatscould be seen, so the life-boat returnedto the Brothers. One of her crew whowas very exhausted was transferred tothe life-boat, which then took her intow. The life-boat went round to theother boats, fifteen altogether, andadvised them to get their anchors up.She shepherded them all back toharbour, towed the Brothers to Yar-

mouth, and returned to her station at7.80 A.M. She had been on service foreight hours.—Rewards, £23 17*.

Newhaven and Shoreham Harbour,Sussex.—Early in the morning of the30th May, 1938, fishermen reported tothe Newhaven life-boat station that thefishing smack Maggie, of Shoreham,was long overdue. A strong S.W. galewas blowing, with a rough sea. At4 A.M. the motor life-boat Cecil andLilian Philpott was launched, and at5 A.M. the Shoreham Harbour motorlife-boat Rosa Woodd and Phyllis Lunnwas called out to join in the search.The Newhaven life-boat found thefishing boat about seven miles to theS.W., with her sails damaged and herengine giving trouble, and escorted herinto harbour, arriving at 6.30 A.M.The Shoreham Harbour life-boat re-turned at 9.15 A.M.—Rewards: New-haven, £7 5s. 6d.; Shoreham Harbour,£7 15s. 6d.

Whitby, Yorkshire.—At about threein the morning of the 30th May, 1938,the local fishing coble Ramleigh put offto haul crab pots about six miles southof Whitby. One of her crew of threewas coxswain of the motor life-boatMary Ann Hepworth. She had notreturned by 6.15 A.M. and some anxietywas felt for her safety. A very strongnorth breeze was blowing and the seawas rough, and it was known that theRamleigh would be working againstwind and sea, and be in danger of beingswamped. The motor life-boat waslaunched at 6.45 A.M., and three and ahalf miles south met the Ramleighcoming home, making very heavyweather. The life-boat got on herweather side, to give her shelter, andescorted her safely back to harbour.She returned to her station at 9 A.M.—Rewards, £5 9s.

Cramer, Norfolk.—The motor life-boatH. F. Bailey was launched at 7.20 A.M.on the 30th May, 1938, after informa-tion had been receired from the coast-

guard that the fishing boat G. V. H., ofGreat Yarmouth, was in difficultiesthree to four miles from the look-outat Haisborough. The weather wassqually, with a strong W.S.W. breezeand a moderate sea. When the life-boat reached the fishing boat at 9.15A.M. she was four miles east of Palling,with her engine broken down, andanchor lost. Her crew of two asked tobe towed to Yarmouth and this thelife-boat did. Thanks were expressedby the rescued men and their wives.—•Rewards, £13 2*. 6d.

Flamborough, Yorkshire.—At 7.30 A.M.on the 30th May, 1938, a north galesprang up, bringing a rough sea.Several of the local fishing cobles wereat sea, and the No. 1 motor life-boatElizabeth and Albina Whitley waslaunched at 8 A.M., in case her helpshould be needed. She met the Nancytwo miles to the south-east, escortedher in, and then went back in the samedirection and escorted in the Dennis.A third coble, the Brittania, she foundabout three miles N.N.W., escorted herin, and returned to her station at 12.10P.M.—Rewards, £9 2s.

Lowestoft, Suffolk.—The motor life-boat Agnes Cross left harbour at 2 P.M.on the 30th May, 1938, for exercise,going in the direction of the EastNewcombe Buoy. A whole W. galewas blowing, with a heavy sea. Atrawler was seen three miles S.S.E.from the buoy, with a smaller boatastern. The life-boat altered hercourse, and on closing the trawler,found that she had in tow the half-decked yacht Merry Thought, of New-haven, bound for pleasure from Hollandto Harwich. Her sails were torn andshe was shipping water. Her crew oftwo were in the cockpit working thepump. The life-boat escorted the twovessels across the Newcombe Sands andInner Shoal into the harbour, arrivingat 4 P.M.—Rewards, £5 15s.

New Quay and Aberystwyth, Cardigan-shire.—At 1.40 P.M. on the 31st May,1938, the coastguard reported that thefishing boat Peggy, of New Quay, withtwo men on board, had put out at 2 A.M.and was long overdue. A strong breezeto moderate gale was blowing from the

south-west, the sea was rough and theweather thick. The New Quay pullingand sailing life-boat William CantrellAshley was launched at 1.45 P.M., andat 4 P.M. found the Peggy, about sixmiles E.N.E. of New Quay Head. Sheescorted her back to harbour, arrivingthere at 5.10 P.M. Meanwhile theAberystwyth motor life-boat FrederickAngus had also been launched, at 2.42P.M., to help in the search. Shereturned to her station at 7.45 P.M.—Rewards: New Quay, £11 9*.;Aberystwyth, £13 11s.

Rosslare Harbour, Co. Wexford.—At4.45 P.M. on the 1st June, 1938, a smallvessel was seen to be in a dangerousposition S. by E. of the Splaugh Rock.A moderate but increasing N.E. galewas blowing, with heavy rain and aconfused sea. The motor life-boatK.E.C.F. put out at 5.10 P.M. andfound the motor yacht Embla, of Cork,with a party of four on board. Shewas in difficulties with her engine, andas she was being carried to leeward andwas in danger of going on an old wreck,the life-boat took her in tow andbrought her to Rosslare Harbour.Both boats shipped heavy seas, buteventually the Embla was safely mooredat about 7 P.M. Mr. W. J. B. Moncas,branch secretary, went out in the life-boat.—Permanent paid crew: Reward,15s. 6d.

Torbay, Devon.—At 7.42 P.M. onthe 1st June, 1938, the BabbacombeCorinthian Sailing Club informed theBerry Head coastguard that a vesselwas flying a distress signal a mile anda half east of Oddicombe, and thecoastguard informed the life-boatstation. H.M.S. Royal Sovereign, atanchor in Torbay, signalled the coast-guard, offering help, if needed. Astrong S.W. gale was blowing, with avery rough sea. The motor life-boatAlfred and Clara Heath, on temporaryduty at the station, put out at 7.52 P.M.Meanwhile members of the Babba-combe Corinthian Sailing Club and SeaScouts had launched a small boat fromOddicombe, with great difficulty, andthis boat put out to the rescue, mannedby Mr. F. T. Stoneham, the captain ofthe club, Mr. L. W. Drake, and Mr. C.Brown. When the life-boat arrived

she found the yacht Craignair, ofLymington, at anchor. The boat fromOddicombe had already rescued two ofher crew of four. As the yacht wasanchored in an exposed position, thelife-boat towed her into Brixham Har-bour, which was reached at midnight.The Institution awarded a framedletter of thanks to the BabbacombeCorinthian Sailing Club. —- PropertySalvage case for the life-boat.

Wicklow.—During the evening of the1st June, 1938, the motor yacht Cygnet,of Dublin, with a man and a boy onboard, was caught by bad weatherE.S.E. of Wicklow Head. Her steering-gear was damaged and she began tomake water. A moderate N.E. galewas blowing, with a heavy sea, heavyrain and hail. The harbour-masterreported that the Cygnet was in diffi-culties and the motor life-boat LadyKylsant was launched at 8.10 P.M. Itwas then one hour after low water, andshe grounded at the bottom of theslipway. She was soon refloated, how-ever, with the help of ninety to ahundred men on the pier, pulling onher cable. She reached the Cygnet at9 P.M., escorted her into harbour, andreturned to her station at 10 P.M.Owing to the heavy seas on the slipwayshe could not immediately be rehoused,and was left at moorings.—Rewards,£10 55.

Plymouth, Devon.—At 7.55 P.M. on the1st June, 1938, a message was receivedfrom the Royal South-Western YachtClub that a boat was drifting ashore ina dangerous position. A westerly galewas blowing, with a very rough sea.The boat was the motor cruiser Red-wings, of Plymouth, with two men onboard. Her engine had broken down,and she was helpless. The reservemotor life-boat Hearts of Oak, ontemporary duty at Plymouth, put outat 8.10 P.M., but found that a pinnacefrom H.M.S. Vindictive, "which wasanchored in the sound, had got a lineon board the Redwings. The life-boatkept on the Redwings's weather bow, togive her as much shelter as possible,while the pinnace towed her intoPlymouth docks. The life-boat re-turned to her station at 9 P.M.—Rewards, £9 Is.

Yarmouth, Isle of Wight.—At about9.9 P.M. on the 1st June, 1938, the CliffEnd coastguard telephoned that ayacht was in distress at the mouthof Lymington River. She was theauxiliary cutter yacht Monie, of South-ampton, bound with a crew of twofrom Totland Bay for Lymington.Her engine had broken down, and heranchors were dragging. A whole S.W.gale was blowing, with a very roughsea. The motor life-boat S.G.E. waslaunched at 9.24 P.M., anchored nearthe Monie about 10 P.M. and fired aline over her. The squalls were soterrific that the life-boat's anchordragged, but eventually the life-boat

fot alongside and took off the crew,everal times she grounded on shoals,

but she got clear at about 1 A.M. andforty minutes later landed the men.So rough was the weather that thelife-boat could not be replaced on hermoorings until 5 A.M. The rescuedmen sent letters of thanks and a giftfor the life-boat crew. — Rewards,£10 2s. 6d.

Hastings, Sussex.—During the eveningof the 1st June, 1938, a whole S.W.gale sprang up, bringing with it a veryheavy sea. Several local fishing boatshad been caught at sea, and it wasdecided to send out the motor life-boatCyril and Lilian Bishop. Great diffi-culty was experienced in launching, asthe tide was low, and the life-boat hadto be dragged over the sand. Sixty-fivelaunchers took part, and most of themhad to go well into the sea. The life-boatgot away at 9.44 P.M. The second cox-swain was in command, as the coxswainwas at sea, and the honorary secretaryof the station, Commander W. High-field, O.B.E., R.N., was on board. Shemade two trips to the westward andescorted in the William and Edwin andthe Unity, and then two eastward,and escorted in the -Little Mayflowerand the Boy Bob. The skipper of thelast boat said that he had not seen anyothers, and that they had probably runfor shelter at Rye or round Dungeness.The life-boat got back to harbour at11.45 P.M. News was then receivedthat a boat had broken down half amile off Winchelsea, and the life-boatimmediately put out again. She foundnothing, however, and returned to her

station at 2.40 on the morning of the2nd June. She had then been at seafor five hours in the worst conditionsshe had ever experienced. In recog-nition of this good service the Institu-tion sent a letter of appreciation to thebranch and a letter of thanks toCommander Highfield. An increase inthe usual money award on the standardscale was granted to each member ofthe crew and to the helpers.—Standardrewards to crew, £11 5s.; additionalrewards to crew, £9; total rewards,£60 13s.

Poole and Bournemouth, Dorset.—Atabout 10.30 P.M. on the 1st June, 1938,the Parkstone police reported distresssignals in Poole Harbour. A W.S.W.gale was blowing, with a rough sea andsqualls of rain. The pulling and sailinglife-boat Harmar was launched at11.15 P.M. and found the motor yachtZaire, of Poole, at anchor. One of thetwo men on board had already beentaken off by a motor launch. Thelife-boat landed the other and returnedto her station at 4.15 A.M.—Rewards,£20 5s.

Southend-on-Sea, and Walton and Frin-ton, Essex.—On 2nd June, 1938, in awhole gale the Southend-on-Sea motorlife-boat Greater London (Civil ServiceNo. 3), rescued two men from theyacht Wimpie, of Southampton, andthree men from the barge Glenrosa, ofLondon. She went out a third time tothe barge Maid of Munster, but thebarge did not need her help. She thenrescued two men from the bargeAudrey, of London. The Walton andFrinton motor life-boat E.M.E.D. alsowent out, but her services were notrequired.—Rewards: Southend-on-Sea,Thanks of the Institution inscribed onvellum and £31 14s. 6d.; Walton andFrinton, £7 8s. 6d. Exmouth, Devonshire.—At about 12.20A.M. on the 2nd June, 1938, the coast-guard reported that a small vessel offDawlish appeared to be in difficultiesand was drifting towards the land. Awest gale was blowing, with a heavyswell and squalls of rain. The motorlife-boat Catherine Harriet Eaton was

launched at 1 A.M., with the help ofmen of the Warwickshire Yeomanry.She found the motor yacht Helen Mary,of Southampton, at anchor with oneengine running. The other had beenstopped by the sea. She was in veryshallow water and drifting on to thebreakwater. The two men on boardhad no idea where they were. Therewas just enough water for the life-boatto get alongside her, and the secondmechanic jumped on board. He helpedto get the second engine started. Thelife-boat then piloted the yacht intoExmouth. She returned to her stationat 3.50 A.M.—Rewards, £15 9s. 6d.

Dover, Kent.—At about 12.45 A.M. onthe 2nd June, 1938, morse signals wereseen from a yacht. The night wasvery stormy, with a whole S.E. gale andvery rough sea. While the life-boatcrew were assembling a man from thecutter yacht Saladin, of Southampton,was washed ashore in a dinghy. Itwas on account of this man that thesignals had been made. At 5.0 A.M. ayacht was seen to be dragging heranchor in a dangerous position off therocks at the eastern end of DoverHarbour. The motor life-boat SirWilliam Hillary put off at 5.10 andfound the yacht to be the Saladin, withthree men on board. She was riding totwo small anchors, having lost herbower anchor and cable." The life-boattook her to a safe anchorage in thetidal basin. She returned to mooringsat 7 A.M. and found that her boardingboat had sunk. The boarding boatwas recovered later in the day.—Property salvage case: Rewards forassembly, 7s. Qd.

Great Yarmouth and Gorleston, Norfolk.—At about 6 A.M. on the 2nd June,1938, the coastguard reported a smalllongshore boat at anchor, a mile and ahalf S.E. of the Palling coastguard'slook-out. - She was not making signalsfor help, but in view of the bad weathera watch was kept on her. Shortlyafter 8 A.M. the boat got under way andmade south. A moderate southerlygale was now blowing, with a veryheavy sea and squalls of rain. As theboat would be running a great risk ifshe tried to get south of Winterton,the motor life-boat John and Mary

Meiklam of Gladswood was launched at8.30 A.M. She found the boat—theWater Lily, with a crew of three—atanchor between Winterton and Palling.The skipper said that he had tried toget south, but the conditions were toobad. The coxswain advised him to goto Palling and anchor under the land,where his boat would get more shelter.The life-boat escorted the Water Lilyto a safe anchorage, gave her crewa supply of food and water, and thenmade for her station, where she arrivedat 1.45 P.M.—Rewards, £9 13s.

Arbroath, Angus.—On the morning ofthe 2nd June, 1938, the local fishingbDat Restless Wave, returning t'o har-bour, missed the tide, and lay off theharbour bar to wait for sufficient waterto enable her to enter. The wind rose,making the bar very dangerous. At2 P.M. a moderate N.E. gale was blow-ing, with a heavy swell and rain. Themotor life-boat John' and WilliamMudie was launched, stood by theRestless Wave until 3.45 P.M., and thenescorted her into harbour. She re-turned to her station at 4 P.M.—Rewards, £3 4s. 6d.

Dover, Kent.-—At about 1.40 P.M. onthe 5th June, 1938, the Sandgatecoastguard reported that a yacht hadbeen dismasted half a mile S.S.W. ofthe Admiralty Pier. A S.W. gale wasblowing, with a rough sea. The motorlife-boat Sir William Hillary put out at1.46 P.M., and found that the yacht wasthe Nirvana, of Ardrossan, bound witha crew of four from Dover to Gosport.The life-boat towed her into the innerharbour and returned to her stationat 5.30 P.M.—Property Salvage Case.

Moelfre, Anglesey.—During the after-noon of the 6th June, 1938, the Holy-head coastguard telephoned that asmall sailing yacht had been reportedmaking heavy weather about fourmiles out to sea. Owing to badvisibility, it was not possible to see ifshe was making distress signals. Asouth gale was blowing, with a roughsea and rain. The motor life-boatG.W. was launched at 2.35 P.M. andfound the yacht to be the Dozmare, ofCarnarvon, bound from Holyhead toBeaumaris. She was then about six

miles E.N.E. of Moelfre Island. Shewas under control, but having a veryrough time, and her crew were glad tosee the life-boat. The life-boat es-corted her to Beaumaris, which wasreached at 7.30 P.M., and eventuallygot back to her station at 11 P.M.—•Rewards, £10 10s.

New Brighton, Cheshire.—On the even-ing of the 10th June, 1938, news wasreceived through the Mersey DockBoard that a vessel was ashore on theBurbo Bank. A N.W. breeze wasblowing, with a rough sea. The motorlife-boat City of Bradford I, on temporaryduty at the station, put out at 6.45 P.M.She found that the vessel was theschooner Minnie, of Peterhead, withfour men on board. Her engine hadbroken down and her engine-room wasflooded. The life-boat took her toRock Ferry, where she was beached,and returned to her station at 11 P.M.—Rewards, £12 3s. 6d.

Clacton-on-Sea, Essex.—15th May,1938. An outboard motor boat hadcapsized, but four of the five people onboard were picked up by a rowing boatand the other swam ashore.—Rewards,£5 13s.

Whitby, Yorkshire.—16th May, 1938.A motor speed-boat had broken down,but a fishing boat took her in tow.—Rewards, £10 13s.

Runswick, Yorkshire.—16th May, 1938.A vessel had been reported ashore, butnothing could be found.—Rewards,£20 5s. 6d.

Shoreham Harbour,Sussex—17thMay,1938. White rockets had been re-ported from a vessel to the south-east,but no vessel in distress was found.—Rewards, £10 5s.

Falmouth, Cornwall.—1st June, 1938.The Porthoustock coastguard had re-ported that a small yacht, with threemen on board, had been blown out tosea from the Helford River. A strongW. by N. gale was blowing, with avery rough sea. The motor life-boatB.A.S.P. was launched at 8 P.M. Alittle later information was received atthe station that a yacht had put intoSt. Mawes. The life-boat made athorough search of the bay and foundnothing. It was then learned that theauxiliary yacht, Salonique, of St. Mawes,which had put in there after the life-boat had been launched, was the yachtreported in distress. The life-boat re-turned to her station at 11 P.M. Inview of the very severe weather, anincrease in the usual money award onthe standard scale was granted to eachmember of the crew.—Standard re-wards to crew, £8 15s.; additionalrewards to crew, £6; total rewards,£15 7s.

New Quay, Cardiganshire.—2nd June,1938. A fishing boat was in distress,but her crew of five were rescued fromthe shore by the coastguard rocketlife - saving appliances. — Rewards,£25 19s.

Margate, Kent.—2nd June, 1938. Asignal had been hoisted by the GirdlerLightvessel, but the life-boat foundthat it was to announce firing practice.She then searched for a missing yacht,but could not find her. The yachtwas washed ashore later at Leigh,Essex, with a dead man on board.—Rewards, £6 4s.

Yarmouth, Isle of Wight.—8th June,1938. The sounding of a horn in adense fog had been reported, but novessel in distress was found.—Rewards,£7 16s.

July Meeting.

Clacton-on-Sea, Essex.—On 30th May,1938, the motor life-boat Edward Z.Dresden towed the German yachtWestwind, of Bremen, to Harwich. (Afull account appears on page 538).

Rosslare Harbour, Co. Wexford.—During the morning of the llth June,1938, the three-masted motor schoonerAgnes Craig, of Dublin, ran aground onthe N.W. side of Blackwater Bank, aboutfourteen miles from Rosslare Harbour.She was bound with a cargo of coalfrom Birkenhead to Crosshaven. AN.W. breeze was blowing, with a groundswell. The motor life-boat K.E.C.F.was launched at 9.40 A.M., and stood bythe vessel. With several return tripsfor food and fuel, she continued tostand by until the Agnes Craig refloatedat 10.5 P.M. on the 15th. The life-boatreturned to her station at 12.15 A.M. onthe 16th. The service had lasted overfour days and a half. The owner madea donation to the Institution. Inrecognition of this long and uncom-fortable service, the Institution madea special award of £l to each of theseven permanent paid members of thecrew. It also made a special award of£1 to the one volunteer member of thecrew in addition to the reward of £8 onthe standard scale.—Total rewards,£21 14s. 6d.

Boulmer, Northumberland.—At about6.30 P.M. on the 19th June, 1938, in-formation was received at the life-boatstation, through Cullercoats wirelessstation and Blyth coastguard that thes.s. London had in tow the broken-down motor yacht Irene. The motorlife-boat Clarissa Langdon was launchedat 6.57 P.M. and met the s.s. London offCoquet Island. A strong westerly windwas blowing, and the London wastowing the Irene, with three men onboard, close under her lee for shelter.The life-boat took the Irene in tow andbrought her into Amble Harbour,returning to her station at 9 P.M.—Rewards, £8 Is.

Newcastle, Co. Down.—At about 7 P.M.on the 21st June, 1938, the coastguardreported that two fishing boats were indifficulties one mile east of MullartownPoint. They were the motor fishingboats Lizzie and William Cecil, ofAnnalong, both helpless owing to thebreakdown of their engines. A freshS.W. breeze was blowing, with a heavyswell. The motor life-boat L.P. andSt. Helen, was launched at 7.10 P.M.,and found the boats at anchor. Theyhad no sails or sweeps. The life-boattowed them into Annalong Harbour,and returned to her station at 9.30 P.M.—Rewards, £22 18s. 6d.

Ramsgate, Kent.—At about 1.55 A.M.on the 24th June, 1938, the watchmanon the East Pier reported that a yachtsouth of the harbour was burning flares.A light S.S.W. breeze was blowing.The sea was smooth. The motor life-boat Prudential put out at 2.5 A.M. andfound the yacht Orchis, of London,aground on the Brake Sands. Shecarried a crew of three, and was boundfrom Newhaven to London. The life-boat gave her help and stood by untilshe refloated and went on her way.The life-boat then returned to herstation at 5.30 A.M.—Property SalvageCase; Rewards, 11s.

Torbay, Devonshire.-—At 6.5 A.M. onthe 24th June, 1938, the Berry Headcoastguard reported that a small motorboat with one man on board had run onto a submerged rock near Berry Head.A gentle west breeze was blowing; the

sea was smooth. The reserve motorlife-boat Alfred and Clara Heath, whichwas on temporary duty at Torbay, waslaunched at 6.20 A.M., and found themotor boat lolanda, of Brixham, in avery dangerous position on the rock,with a big tilt sternwards. She towedher clear and returned to her stationat 7.45 A.M.—Rewards, £3 lls. Qd.

Barry Dock, Glamorganshire.—Whilethe motor life-boat Rachel and MaryEvans was out on exercise on the 25thJune, 1938, a yacht was seen flying adistress signal about a mile S.W. ofLavernock Point. A strong W.N.W.breeze was blowing, with a rough sea.The life-boat altered her course, andfound the auxiliary yacht White Wings,of Cardiff, with her engine brokendown and her sails blown away. Shecarried a crew of four and was cruisingfrom Cardiff. The life-boat towed herto Barry, and returned to her stationat 7.30 P.M. A donation was receivedfrom the owner.—Rewards, £5 9s.

Boulmer, Northumberland.—Duringthe morning of the 27th June, 1938,eight motor fishing cobles from Boulmerand Alnmouth were caught at sea bybad weather. All the life-boat's officerswere at sea, and the Clarissa Langdon .was launched at 1.30 P.M., with Mr.W. S. Stanton, the honorary secretaryof the station, in command. A strongbreeze to whole gale was blowing fromthe W.S.W., with a moderate sea. Thelife-boat escorted all the coble.s intosafety and returned to her station at3.45 P.M. A letter of thanks was sentto Mr, Stanton.—Rewards, £4 17s. 6d.

Blyth, Northumberland.—At 3.57 P.M.on the 29th June, 1938, the coastguardreported that a sailing yacht about twomiles S.E. of East Pier was in diffi-culties. She was apparently trying tomake Blyth, but her headsail was tornand she was drifting to leeward. Awest gale was blowing, with a verychoppy sea. The motor life-boatJoseph Adlam was launched at 4.20 P.M.,and found the yacht to be the Narwhal,of Blyth, with a crew of three. A linewas passed to the yacht, but after a fewminutes' towing it parted. Another

Fleetwood, Lancashire.—At 11.50 A.M.•on the 3rd July, 1938, a message wasreceived from the Wyre lightkeepers,through the harbour authorities, that amotor boat was in difficulties about aquarter of a mile from King's Scar Buoy.A squally W.S.W. breeze was blowing,with a rough sea and rain. The motorlife-boat Frederick H. Pilley waslaunched at noon, and found the motorboat Pastime, of Liverpool, with fourmen on board, riding to an anchor.Her engine had broken down. Shewas in a dangerous position, in brokenwater. The life-boat went alongsideand took off the four men. Two life-boatmen were put on board the Pastime,and the life-boat towed her into Fleet-wood. She returned to her station at1.30 P.M. The owners sent a letter ofthanks and a donation.—Rewards,£5 Is.

Wick, Caithness-shire.—At 3.19 P.M.on the 3rd July, 1938, the coastguardreported that a herring drifter had goneashore on Proudfoot Rock, on thenorth side of Wick Bay. She was theSailor King, of Lowestoft, bound forWick laden with fishing gear. A lightsoutherly breeze was blowing. Thesea was smooth. The motor life-boatFrederick and Emma was launched at3.50 P.M., and at the master's requestran out a kedge anchor from thedrifter. Meanwhile two other driftersarrived and tried to tow the SailorKing clear. They did not succeed, butas the master of the drifter did notneed any further help from the life-boat,she returned to her station, arrivingat 6.20 P.M. The Sailor King wasrefloated next day.—Rewards, £5 6s.

Bembridge, Isle of Wight.—At 6.45 P.M.on the 4th July, 1938, the coastguardreported that a yacht was in difficultiesnear Bembridge Ledge. She cleared it,but watch was kept on her, and it wasseen that she could not be got undercontrol. A strong, squally, west breezewas blowing, with a choppy sea. Themotor life-boat Langham was launched

at 8.48 P.M., and found the yacht to bethe Helen, of Hamble, with a crew offour. She towed her to Sea View Bay,and returned to her station at 10.15P.M.—Rewards, £10 11s.

April Meeting.

Benbecula, Western Isles.—At about8.30 P.M. on the 24th September, 1937,during a flowing tide, three men triedto cross South Ford to South Uist ina horse trap, but half-way across thehorse got into difficulties and the trapoverturned. A S.E. gale was blowing,and the sea was rough. One of themen swam to a sandbank, but theothers, who could not swim, clung tothe trap. Their shouts were heard andthree men put off in a small rowingboat, to find that the horse had beendrowned and that the men were upto their necks in water and in a stateof exhaustion. With difficulty, and atwhat is reported to have been greatrisk, they got the men on board therowing boat and applied artificialrespiration to one man, who was un-conscious.—Rewards, £l, together witha letter of appreciation to each of thethree rescuers, Messrs. John Bucha-nan, Donald McKinnon, and WilliamNewland.

Holy Island, Northumberland. — Onthe 9th March, 1938, seven men put outin a motor boat and rescued the crewof the s.s. Locksley.—Rewards, £7, also10s. for fuel used and boat-hook lost.

Boathaven, Caithness-shire.—On the18th March, 1938, the steam trawlerCraig-an-eran, of Aberdeen, bound forthe Icelandic fishing grounds, ranaground in a very dangerous positionabout a mile north of Wick. A verystrong S.S.W. wind was blowing, witha choppy sea, and the night was dark.Eight men put off from Boathaven inthe 26-feet motor boat Boy Alex andtried to tow the trawler clear, but shewas hard aground and eventually heeledover. Her crew of ten decided toabandon ship and were dragged throughthe water to the Boy Alex. The servicetook two and a half hours.—Rewards,£12, and 6s. for fuel used.

Cullercoats, Northumberland. —• Onthe morning of the 25th March, 1938,the Tynemouth coastguard telephonedthat a small boat half a mile N.N.E. ofTynemouth Castle was making distresssignals. A moderate west breeze wasblowing, with a moderate sea. In orderto save time the coxswain launchedhis motor coble and put off withtwo other men. They found a smallcanvas canoe with two men on board indanger of swamping, as her stern-posthad given way. They towed her intoharbour.—Rewards, £l 2s. 6d. to therescuers, 8s. to helpers on shore, and2s. for fuel used.

Worthing, Sussex.—At 2.30 P.M. onthe 7th April, 1938, a woman feU offthe pier. Ex-Second Coxswain New-man at once put off in a rowing boat.He rescued the woman, who had beencarried some distance from the pier,and brought her ashore.—Reward,A framed letter of thanks.

May Meeting.

Teignmouth, Devon.—At about noonon the 15th April, 1938, the bowmanof the life-boat and another man sawtwo persons put off from the riverbeach in a rowing boat and makefor the sea. A strong east wind wasblowing, and the sea was very rough onthe bar, where the swell met a strongebb tide. When the rowing boatreached the bar she shipped water andnearly capsized, and the oars were lostoverboard. The bowman and his com-panion at once put off in a motor boat,and although their boat stuck on thebar and damaged her propeller, theyreached the rowing boat, rescued thetwo on board and towed the boatback.—Rewards, £l 5s.; with 2s. 6d.for fuel; 2s. 6d. for a lost boat-hook;and £3 15s. towards the cost of a newpropeller.

East Runton, Norfolk.—On the morn-ing of the 15th April, 1938, the fishingboat Boy Cyril was capsized in thebreakers about thirty yards offshore.

Her crew of two were thrown into thewater, one man striking his head andbecoming unconscious. A moderatenorth breeze was blowing, with amoderate swell on the beach. Twomen, at some risk, launched a rowingboat, took the unconscious man fromthe water and, with the other manclinging to the side of the boat, re-turned ashore.—Rewards, £1 10s.

Hoylake, Cheshire.—Second CoxswainJones and another member of the life-boat crew put off in a rowing boat atabout 3.20 P.M. on the 16th April, 1938,as a report had been received from thepolice that a man had fallen overboardfrom the yacht Meg. A fresh northbreeze was blowing, with a ratherrough sea. They found that the manhad gone overboard and that his com-panion had dived into the sea in anunsuccessful attempt at rescue, and hadthen swum ashore. They searched for,and found, the body of the drownedman and returned at 6.20 P.M., laterputting off again to bring in the yacht.—Rewards, £1 5s.; and 2s. 6d. to thelife-boat coxswain, who stood by.

Herne Bay, Kent.—Shortly after mid-night on the 16th-17th April, 1938, theyacht Breeze became unmanageable,and drifted towards the rocks atHampton Jetty. A strong north-easterly breeze was blowing, with arough sea. The Margate motor life-boat was called out, but meanwhiletwo men had launched a 16-feetrowing boat. At considerable risk andwith great difficulty they got alongsidethe yacht, which was pitching heavily,and rescued the man and the boywho were on board. Their boatshipped a lot of water, but they broughther safely ashore west of HamptonPier.—Rewards, £2 and framed lettersof thanks to Mr. Frank Holness andto Mr. Alfred Pressley.

Teignmouth, Devon.—On the 1st May,1938, two women in a small rowingboat came down the River Teign topicnic in one of the coves along thecoast. There was a strong ebb tidewhich caused broken water on the bar.Two fishermen, who saw the risk thewomen were running in trying to getout to sea, put off in a motor boat and

towed the rowing boat into safety.—•Rewards, 15s.

June Meeting.Ilfracombe, Devon.—At about 6.30

P.M. on the 18th May, 1938, the motorfishing" boat Victory, of Ilfracombe,was seen to be in difficulties in Woola-combe Bay by two men who werereturning to Ilfracombe in a motorfishing boat. A strong squally N.W.wind was blowing, with a rough groundsea. The Victory's engine had brokendown, and she was unable to get out ofthe bay under sail, as the wind was on-shore. The two men toot her in tow toIlfracombe, arriving at about 9 P.M.—Rewards, £1 5s.; and 6s. for fuel used.

Totland Bay, Isle of Wight.—On the29th May, 1938, the yacht Martlet wentaground on Warden Ledge, and at therequest of the coastguard a local boat-man and his son put off in a rowingboat. The owner of the yacht, how-ever, did not want any help, and heand the other three people on boardwent ashore in the yacht's punt.—Reward, 10s.

Falmouth, Cornwall.—At 6.45 P.M. onthe 1st June, 1938, the life-boat cox-swain, the motor mechanic, and fiveother men put off in the rowing board-ing boat of the life-boat in response toa message from the dock police that adinghy, with a youth and two childrenon board, was in difficulties in theharbour and was drifting towards thedock beach. A west-by-north gale wasblowing, with a rough sea and squallsof rain. The life-boatmen found thatthe dinghy, which had been carriedaway from a yacht, was being filled bythe heavy seas, and was in danger ofsinking. They rescued the three occu-pants and landed them on the pier.—Rewards, £2 5s.

Holyhead, Anglesey.—At about 11.15P.M. on the llth June, 1938, the coast-guard reported that five soldiers whohad put off in a small boat were indifficulties off Newry Beach and wereshouting for help. A fresh S.W. breezewas blowing, and the weather wasovercast with misty rain. The motorpilot boat, manned by five men, putout. They found the boat partly filled

with water, but the soldiers hadalready got ashore with help from thecoastguard.—Rewards, £2 10*., and3s. for fuel used.

July Meeting.

Foula, Shetlands.—At about 9 A.M. onthe 8th April, 1938, during a N.-by-E.gale, with a very heavy sea, the steamtrawler Angus, of Hull, ran on to theHoevdi Rocks, a submerged reef aboutthree miles S.E. of Foula. She wasseen by two men, one of whom ran tothe post office to warn the Aith life-boat,but found that communication withthe mainland could not be made until1 P.M. The second man, and five others,with great difficulty and at greatrisk, launched the 22-feet Foula motormail boat, the only boat available.Meanwhile the trawler had washed offthe rocks and her crew had abandonedher in a small boat. When the six menhad got a considerable way out theysaw another trawler pick up the boat.—Rewards, £6; also 7s. to the man whotried to warn the life-boat station;and 3.?. 8d. for fuel used. (The systemof communication has since beenimproved.)

Babbacombe, Devon.—On the 1stJune, 1938, two of the crew of theyacht Craignair were rescued by mem-bers of the Babbacombe CorinthianSailing Club.—Reward: A Framed Let-ter of Appreciation to the Club. (For afull account see Torbay, " Services ofthe Life-boats," page 549.)

Cromer, Norfolk.—At about 11.30 A.M.on the 6th June, 1938, the canoe SilverSpray, with one man on board, cap-sized about three-quarters of a mile off-shore, near Cromer lighthouse, and theman was thrown into the sea. Noother vessel was near. A strong, gusty,south breeze was blowing, with achoppy sea, and the tide was abouthalf flood. Mr. R. Derek Bone, whowas on the beach, heard shouts, sawpeople on the cliffs pointing out to sea,and at once launched his boat, a 14-feethome-made outboard motor boat. Hefound thj upturned canoe, and aftercruising round saw the man come to thesurface, unconscious. With some diffi-culty and at some risk he dragged him

on board, headed his boat for the shoreand then applied artificial respirationuntil the shore was reached. The manwas taken to hospital and eventuallyrevived.—Rewards, £1 and a FramedLetter of Appreciation to Mr. R. DerekBone.

Ramsey, Isle of Man.—The motorvessel Brittania, of Ramsey, put outduring the morning of the llth June,1938, for the fishing, but ran out ofpetrol and got into difficulties. Shetried to get under the shelter of Maug-hold Head by using a small sail, butcould make no headway. A moderateN.W. breeze was blowing, with a roughsea. The coastguard reported to thehonorary secretary of the life-boatstation, who sent the life-boat cox-swain and two other men off in a motorboat. They gave the Brittania somepetrol and escorted her back to harbour.—Rewards, £l 10s., and 10s. forfuel used.

Tenby, Pembrokeshire.—During theevening of the 12th June, 1938, thecoastguard reported that a small sailingboat, with a boy on board, was abouthalf a mile S.E. of Castle Hill, and wasunable to get back to Tenby harbouragainst the wind and tide. A mode-rate N.N.E. breeze was blowing, witha moderate sea. The honorary sec-retary of the life-boat station sent out aman in a motor boat to tow the boat in.—Reward, 5s.

Teesmouth, Yorkshire.—During theevening of the 15th June, 1938, themotor boat Seamew, on passage fromRedcar to Hartlepool, with crew ofthree, got into difficulties through thebreakdown of her engine. A westerlybreeze was blowing, with a surf on thebeach. The Tees pilot cutter, whichwas at sea, saw the Seamew about amile S.E. of the South Gare Coast-guard Station, picked her up and towedher into the River Tees.

At the same time that this servicewas reported to the Institution it wasalso reported that the Tees pilots hadcarried out three other services, asfollows:

On 16th May they towed into Teesthe motor boat Rose, with three men

on board, which had broken down twomiles N.E. of Tees Fairway Buoy.

On 1st June they towed to SeatonSnook the pulling boat Felix, with twofishermen on board, which was drivingon to North Gare.

On 6th June they towed into Hartle-pool the motor boat O.L., with fourmen and two women on board, whichhad broken down two miles N. of TeesFairway Buoy and was being carriedout to sea.—Rewards for the fourservices, £9.

Douglas, Isle of Man.—On the 15thJune, 1938, a converted ship's life-boat, with one man on board, boundfrom Ramsey to Laxey, got into diffi-culties in Laxey Bay, in a moderateN.N.W. gale, with a heavy sea. Herengine had broken down and shebecame waterlogged. The boat wastaken in tow by a passing steamer, andthen by the second coxswain of thelife-boat and another man, who hadput out under the impression that thesteamer wanted to land a pilot. Theywere unable to get her into Douglas andreturned for help. The life-boat cox-swain and three others then put off in amotor boat and towed the boat intosafety.—-Rewards, £2 5s., and Ss. forfuel used.

Whitby, Yorkshire.—At about 9.45A.M. on the 19th June, 1938, the sailingyacht Kuril, of Whitby, capsized whenabout a mile north of Whitby pierswhile out pleasure sailing, and the twomen on board were thrown into thesea. A strong W.N.W. breeze wasblowing, with a moderate sea. Fourmen at once put off in a motor speed-boat and rescued the two men, whomthey found clinging to the keel of the

upturned yacht.—Rewards, £l, and6s. for fuel used.

St. Andrews, Fifeshire.—During theevening of the 19th June, 1938, it wasreported to the life-boat coxswain thata large crowd were watching an objectin the bay, thought to be a canoe witha man on board. There was a lot ofwind at the time, and the canoeappeared to be in danger. The cox-swain and three other men put out ina motor launch, but found that thesupposed canoe was a floating tree-trunk.—Rewards, £l 105., and 55. forfuel used.

Portaferry, Co. Down;—During theafternoon of the 25th June, 1938, asmall boat with one man on board wasseen to be in difficulties at the mouthof Strangford Lough. A strong ebbtide was running and the boat was indanger of being carried out to sea. Atthe request of the coastguard, thePortaferry harbour-master and anotherman put off in a motor boat, but theman in the small boat managed to getashore unaided.—Rewards, £1, and5s. for the use of the boat and for fuel.

Lowestoft, Suffolk.—On the morningof the 26th June, 1938, the coastguardreported that a canoe was drifting outto sea, and the life-boat coxswain andtwo other men put off in the coxswain'smotor boat at 11.5 A.M. A fresh westbreeze was blowing, with a choppy seaand strong ebb tide. The motor boatreached the canoe when it had gotwithin fifty yards of the breakers onthe Inner Shoal. She rescued the twoboys who were on board and towed thecanoe back to harbour.—Rewards, 15s.,and 2s. for fuel used.

The Fishwives of Cullercoats.THE fishwives of Cullercoats this yearcollected £163 at the quarterly roadexercise and launch of the life-boat.This is their seventeenth annual col-lection and they have now collected*over £2,423.

Nearly twenty fishwives took partin the collection and they had the helpof the 100th Company of the Glasgow

Boys' Brigade, which was on holidayat Cullercoats and collected nearly£20.

Mrs. Polly Donkin, now eighty-oneyears old, again headed the list. Shecollected over £75, eight • poundsmore than last year. The total ofher individual collecting is over£805.

Foreign Life-Boat Services.Rescues from British Vessels in 1937 and Numbers of the Fleets.

DURING 1937 help was given by foreignlife-boat services to 21 British vessels.Four of these services were by France, 2by Iceland, 1 by Holland, 1 by Belgium,1 by Norway and 15 by the UnitedStates.

Belgium.On 17th November the s.s. Ino sank

off the Belgian coast and her life-boatwith 19 people on board was pickedup and brought into Ostend.

The Belgian life-boat service has7 stations with 5 motor life-boats,7 pulling life-boats and 1 tug. Eachstation has a life-saving apparatus andthere is one station with this apparatusonly.

Denmark.

There were no services to Britishvessels. The Danish life-boat servicehas 62 stations, with a fleet of 22 motorlife-boats and 36 pulling and sailinglife-boats. Twelve of the stations haverocket life-saving apparatus only.

France.

There were four services by Frenchlife-boats to British vessels.

On 26th February the motor life-boat at Port Vendres went out to thehelp of the Llandovery Castle, of theUnion Castle Line, which had struck amine off the Spanish coast and wasleaking, and stood by while her passen-gers were taken off and the steamerwas got into harbour.

On 15th May the motor life-boat atMolene rescued the crew of 19 menof the Beatsa, of London, which hadrun aground.

On 25th May the motor life-boat atBoulogne helped to refloat the steamerAlmeda Star, which had run aground.

On 18th August the motor life-boatat Calais went to the help of theyacht The Lydia, of Ramsgate, whichwas in a dangerous position, with herengines broken down, and towed her in.

Germany.

There were no services to Britishvessels.

The German fleet has 33 motor life-boats and 62 pulling and sailing life-

boats. There are also 19 stations withrocket life-saving apparatus, and 53stations have this apparatus as wellas life-boats.

Holland.

On 23rd December the motor life-boat at Ijmuiden and the pulling andsailing life-boat from Egmond aanZee, both of the North and SouthHolland Life-Saving Society, stood bythe s.s. Gateshead, which had runaground, until she was refloated bytugs.

The North and South Holland Life-saving Society has a fleet of 14 motorlife-boats and 19 pulling and sailinglife-boats. It also has 19 rocket life-saving apparatus.

The South Holland Society for Savingthe Shipwrecked has 7 motor life-boatsand 4 pulling and sailing life-boats.

This makes a total fleet on the Dutchcoasts of 21 motor life-boats and 23pulling and sailing life-boats.

Iceland.

On 6th March the trawler Favorita,of Grimsby, stranded on Gardskagiand became a total wreck. Eight ofher crew were rescued by anotherBritish trawler, Northern Reward, andnine by the life-saving apparatus fromthe shore.

On 25th December another Grimsbytrawler, the Regal, was wrecked offGerdar in Gardur. She became a totalwreck. Her whole crew of 13 wererescued by life-saving apparatus fromthe shore.

The National Life-saving Associationof Iceland now has a cruising motorlife-boat of 60 tons, which follows thefishing fleets, and 8 pulling and sailinglife-boats. It also has 36 stationswith pistol rocket life-saving apparatus.

Japan.

The Japanese life-boat fleet has 76motor life-boats and 142 pulling andsailing life-boats.

Norway.

On 31st January the life-saving ketchat Rasvag went to the help of theGrimsby trawler Thunderstorm, whichwas short of provisions and had a pipebroken in the engine-room, and pilotedher into Flekkefjord.

The Norwegian Society for Saving theShipwrecked has a fleet of 15 motorketches and 10 sailing ketches. It alsohas 2 shore stations with pulling life-boats and life-saving apparatus and 32stations with life-saving apparatus only.

Portugal.

There were no services to Britishvessels.

The Portuguese Institution for Savingthe Shipwrecked has 8 motor life-boatsand 39 pulling and sailing life-boats.It has also 58 life-saving apparatus.

Spain.

The Spanish Society for Saving theShipwrecked writes : " We do not knowif in 1937 our stations had occasionto rescue British ships, since, owing1

to the exceptional circumstancesthrough which our country is nowpassing, we seldom receive reports fromlocal committees."

The Spanish fleet consists of 18motor life-boats and 27 pulling andsailing life-boats. There are also 15stations with life-saving apparatus only.

Sweden.

There were no services to Britishvessels.

The fleet of the Swedish Society forSaving Life from Shipwreck consists of3 cruising motor life-boats, 8 motorlife-boats, and 5 pulling and sailinglife-boats. One of its motor life-boatstations, and its 5 pulling and sailinglife-boat stations, have life-saving ap-paratus, and there are 3 stations withthis apparatus only.

The Government maintains 12 pulling

and sailing life-boats. Eight of its 12stations have also life-saving apparatus,and there are 6 stations with thisapparatus only. This makes a totalSwedish fleet of 11 "motor life-boatsand 17 pulling and sailing life-boats.

Turkey.

There were no services to Britishvessels.

The Turkish fleet consists of 7 pullingand sailing life-boats.

The United States.

The life-boats of the United Stateswent to the help of 15 British vessels.They also went to the help of 14Canadian vessels.

The United States fleet consists of2 large motor life-boats, 142 self-righting motor life-boats, 155 motorsurf-boats and 265 pulling surf-boats,making 299 motor life-boats and 265pulling life-boats, a total fleet of 564life-boats.

Finland, Latvia, Roumania and Russia.No information has been received

from Finland, Latvia, Roumania andRussia.

British Services to Foreign Vessels.During the year British life-boats

helped 20 foreign vessels, belonging to8 different countries; rescued 101lives from them ; and saved, or helpedto save, 4 of the vessels. They werealso called out to 18 other foreignvessels, but their help was not needed.Of the 20 vessels to which help wasgiven 5 were Dutch, 3 Danish, 3 French,2 Belgian, 2 German, 2 Italian, 2Norwegian, and 1 Greek. Forty-fourlives were rescued from the Italianvessels, 27 from the Danish, and 21from the Greek vessel.

The British fleet at the end of theyear consisted of 138 motor life-boatsand 29 pulling and sailing life-boats-

A New Medal for Gallantry.SINCE the Institution was founded thehead of the Sovereign has appeared onthe obverse of the medals which itawards for gallantry. The first medals,struck in 1825, had the head of GeorgeIV. Although, on his accession to thethrone in 1830, William IV became theInstitution's Patron, no medal was de-signed with his head. Nor was anyfresh medal designed when QueenVictoria came to the throne in 1837.The original medals, with George IV'shead, were used until 1862. QueenVictoria's head was then substituted forit. In 1903 a new medal was designed,with King Edward VII's head, and in1912 another medal was designed withthe head of King George V.

When King George VI came to thethrone the Institution was informedthat for the future the King's effigywas to appear only on medals awardedpersonally by His Majesty. It wastherefore decided to strike a new medalwith the head of Lieut.-Col. Sir WilliamHillary, Bt., the founder of the Institu-tion. The first of these medals werepresented by the Duke of Kent atthe annual meeting on llth May,1938.

The reverse of the medal designed in1825 showed three rescuers in a life-boat,one of them lifting a man from the sea,

with the legend : " Let not the deepswallow me up." Under the head ofthe King, on the obverse, was " W.Wyon, Mint." The artist was Mr.William Wyon, R.A., Chief Engraverto the Royal Mint, and a grandson ofGeorge Wyon who was Chief Goldsmithto George II. One of the three rescuerson the reverse is believed to be aportrait of him.

The second medal, struck in 1862,with the head of Queen Victoria, wasdesigned by Mr. L. C. Wyon. The samereverse was used as on the first medal.

The third medal, with the head ofKing Edward VII, was designed byMr. G. W. de Saulles, the medallist ofthe Royal Mint. On the reverse was anew design, the figure of Hope bucklingon the belt of a life-boatman.

The fourth medal, with the head ofKing George V, was designed by Mr.Bertram MacKennal, A.R.A., and onthis medal the original design for thereverse by Mr. William Wyon wasagain used.

The fifth medal, with the head of SirWilliam Hillary, has the same reverse.This medal has been designed by Mr.Allan G. Wyon, F.R.B.S., a member ofthe family of Mr. William Wyon, andMr. L. C. Wyon, who designed themedals of 1825 and 1862.

Life-Saving by the Coastguard in 1937.IN 1937 the coastguard organizationtook action in 314 cases in whichvessels or aircraft were either observedor reported to be in distress, in difficul-ties, or overdue off the coasts of GreatBritain and Northern Ireland.

In 107 cases the coastguard was ableto warn vessels, and so enable them toalter course and avoid possible disaster.

The breeches-buoy gear was takenout for action by the rocket life-saving

apparatus companies on 72 occasions,and 54 persons were brought to safetyby means of this appliance.

The Board of Trade's shield for the" best wreck service of the year " wasawarded to the Rhossili Company forthe rescue on the night of 10th January,1937, of ten of the crew of the trawlerRoche Castle, which went ashore onthe rocky Gower coast, about twelvemiles from Swansea.

Charity or Piracy?A CINEMA which had helped the In-stitution by showing one of its films

asked in return if the Institution couldlend it a flag with skull and crossbones.

Jersey Life-boat's Visit to France.ON July 9th the St. Helier motor life-boat, Howard D. paid a visit to Franceat the invitation of La Socie'te' desHospitaliers Sauveteurs Bretons. Thevisit was made possible by the goodoffices of Mons. J. Delalande, Frenchconsul-general in Jersey. On boardher were Lieut.-Commander T. Le B.Pirouet, the honorary secretary, andmembers of the Jersey life-boat com-mittee. They took with them lettersof greeting from the Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey and the Bailiff ofJersey, the two patrons of the Jerseybranch. The sea was rough, but thelife-boat did the journey of 35 milesfrom St. Helier to St. Malo in 4| hours.She was met by the St. Malo life-boat,and the party were received by Mons,Leon Berthaut, president of the BretonSociety, Mons. G. Lepeer, presidentof the St. Malo branch, and otherofficials. At the town hall they werewelcomed by the Mayor of St. Malo.A statuette of a British life-boatmanwas presented to the St. Malo branch

of the Breton Society, and its presidentpresented to the Jersey branch thesociety's medallion.

On the following day a conferencewas held to arrange co-operation be-tween the Jersey, Guernsey and St.Malo life-boat stations for the protectionof aircraft. The conference was fol-lowed by a banquet, and in the after-noon, after the St. Malo and Jerseylife-boats had been inspected, theyboth left for Dinard, where they werereceived by the Mayor and Mons. LeCommandant Casimir, president of theDinard branch, A demonstration wasgiven of life-saving apparatus andequipment, and at five o'clock theHoward D. left for Jersey, escortedfor the first few miles by the St. Malolife-boat, in charge of Mons. Le Capi-taine Bourges. The return journey wasmade with a very heavy sea runningand took 4j hours. Before the Jerseylife-boat left, an invitation was givento the St. Malo life-boat to pay a visitto Jersey.

North-Western Conference.A CONFERENCE of branches and guildsin the North-West of England was heldat Blackpool on 17th and 18th June.Two hundred and thirty-six delegatesattended, from forty-four branches andguilds. The delegates were officiallywelcomed by the Mayor of Blackpool,and after the conference were enter-tained to tea by the Mayor and Cor-poration.

Sir Godfrey Baring, Bt., chairman ofthe Institution, presided, supported bythe Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoressof Manchester (Alderman J. The chairman congratulated thebranches and guilds on their work and

gave an address on the life-boat service.A general discussion followed in whichthe delegates gave their experiences oflife-boat days, house-to-house collec-tions, appeals for annual subscriptionsand the various methods of arousingand maintaining public interest andsupport.

Life-boat literature,' souvenirs forsale and stores were on view and provedof special interest to delegates fromnewly-established branches and guilds.

In the evening the crews of theBlackpool, Fleetwood and Lytham-St.Annes life-boats were entertained todinner as the guests of the Lord Mayorof Manchester. Lieut.-Col. C. R.Satterthwaite, O.B.E., secretary of theInstitution, presided in the unavoidableabsence of the Lord Mayor ofManchester.

On the second day the delegatesvisited the new life-boat house atBlackpool and the life-boat station atFleetwood. At Blackpool the motorlife-boat Sarah Ann Austin was

• launched. Before the launch AldermanC. E. Tatham, J.P., honorary secretaryof the Blackpool branch, gave a historyof the station, the district inspector oflife-boats described the life-boat andaddresses were given by Lieut.-Col.

C. R. Satterthwaite, O.B.E. and Mr.L. H. Franceys, honorary treasurer ofthe Blackpool branch.

At Fleetwood the delegates -weretaken for short sea-trips in the life-boatFrederick H. Pilley.

Obituary.

The Marquess of Ailsa.

THE committee of management greatlyregret the death in April of theircolleague, the Marquess of Ailsa, at theage of ninety-one. Lord Ailsa was notonly the oldest, but the senior member.He joined the committee of manage-ment fifty-three years ago, in 1885, andhe had been a vice-president of theInstitution since 1901.

Mr. J. J. Lines, of Newhaven.

Mr. J. J. Lines, of Newhaven, whodied on 5th February, 1938, had retiredfrom the honorary secretaryship ofthe Newhaven station in 1936. Hehad then been its honorary secretaryfor thirty-five years. Mr. Lines wasawarded the Institution's binoculars in1911, and in 1931 he was appointed anhonorary life-governor, the highesthonour which the Institution can be-stow on an honorary worker and whichis given only for very distinguishedservices.

Sir Henry Sutcliffe Smith, of Bradford.

Sir Henry Sutcliffe Smith, who diedon 30th March, 1938, at the age ofseventy-four, had been associated withthe Institution's Bradford branch forseventeen years. He was its honorarytreasurer and secretary from 1921 until1932, and its chairman from 1932 untilhis death. During those years Brad-ford, besides its regular and generousannual contribution to the funds of theInstitution, raised two special funds.In 1920-22 a fund of £10,000 wasraised as a centenary gift to theInstitution. Nearly half of this sumwas collected by the Chamber of Com-merce, of which Sir Henry Sutcliffe

Smith was president in 1919-20. Thisgift provided the motor life-boat, Cityof Bradford, which was stationed on theHumber from 1923 to 1929. She wasreplaced in that year by a more power-ful motor life-boat, City of Bradford II,and towards the cost of this boat Brad-ford contributed a special gift of £4,808.Sir Henry Sutcliffe Smith was awardedthe gold badge of the Institution in1929, and in 1936 he was appointed anhonorary life-governor, the highesthonour which the Institution canbestow on an honorary worker andwhich is. given only for very distin-guished services.

Coxswain Greig, of Stromness.

Coxswain Robert Greig, of Stromness,in the Orkneys, died on 23rd March atthe age of eighty-three. At the age often he went to Edinburgh, and becameassistant to his uncle, who was a book-seller. After two years of booksellinghe went to sea, at the age of sixteen,and then became a fisherman. Hewas appointed second coxswain of theStromness life-boat in 1891, and sevenyears later he became coxswain. Ascoxswain he served for seventeen years,retiring in 1915 at the age of sixty,owing to ill health. He was pensionedby the Institution and awarded acertificate of service; while he was anofficer of the life-boat she was launchedon service 21 times and rescued 87lives. His outstanding service was therescue of three men from the trawlerShakespeare, of Hull, which went ashoreat the Point of Spoil, on llth December,1907, in a heavy sea. For his skill andgallantry as coxswain in that rescue,Coxswain Greig was awarded theInstitution's silver medal.

Greater London.Life-boat day was held throughout Greater

London on 31st May. The amount raisedwas £6,397, an increase of £1,074 on 1937.

ALDEBURGH.—Another of the famousCable family has passed away by the deathof Mr. Robert A. Cable, at the age of 83.He went to sea at the age of twelve, in afishing smack, joined the life-boat crew in1881, was appointed bowman in 1905, andretired in 1927. He had then done 46 yearsservice in the life-boat and had taken partin the rescue of over 170 lives.
