BordeauxAll red Bordeaux is a marriage (often a ménage à trois) of Cabernet Sauvignon,Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Entry level wines with the simple Bordeaux orBordeaux Supérieur appelations are produced throughout the Girondedépartement in south-western France. On the left bank of the Gironde, i.e. theMédoc and Haut-Médoc, Cabernet-Sauvignon sets the tone with wines of finesseand structure. On the right bank, notably in the St Emilion and Pomerol regions,Merlot calls the shots with wines of a more muscular and hearty style.

Always one of our favourites, Cissacembodies much of what makes Médoc

wines so special, with the addedattraction of a realistic price.

Under the same management as itsnear neighbour Beychevelle in St Julien,Beaumont is one of the classiest of theCrus Bourgeois of the Haut-Médoc.

A gem of a property in the St Emilionsatellite of Montagne, Château

Montaiguillon regularly conjures upquality well above average.

Overlooking the Dordogne, facing StEmilion, Château Bel Air produces a

family of fruit driven wines, a firm wellstructured red, a crisp dry white and a

very pretty rosé.

Burgundy & BeaujolaisIn a region of infinite compexity, the one reallysimple factor is the range of grape varietiesemployed – just three, apart from a few nicheitems. White wines are from Chardonnay, redsare from Pinot Noir, and in the south, Beaujolaisis from Gamay. Otherwise it's all about what theFrench call 'terroir', in effect the geology of thevineyard, in terms of aspect, slope, soil structure, altitude, and the interaction of these factors withthe local climate.

Progessive and well run, the familyestate of CHÂTEAU DE

L'HESTRANGE at Blacé at 550metres altitude is one of the highest inthe Beaujolais region. Their Beaujolais

Villages is a fine expression of the

Gamay grape, reaching a peak in theoak aged Hestrangères cuvée. PinotNoir contributes with Gamay to thedelightfully bright and agile Grand

Ordinaire. The range includes aChardonnay of exemplary nervosity,

and a brisk and lively rosé ofconsiderable character.

Hand harvested grapes from their 45year old Gamay vines provide the raw

material for DOMAINE DUGRIFFON's excellent Côte de

Brouilly.

Over the years the name ofJ.MOREAU & FILS has

become virtually synonymouswith that of Chablis itself.Despite being a big fish inwhat is a necessarily smallpond, Moreau makes wines

which admirably capture theelusive charm of this northern

outpost of Burgundy,quintessentially clean, correct

and supple.

Burgundy & BeaujolaisThe town of Beaune is the historic heart of theBurgundian wine trade. The medievalHospices, endowed over the centuries withsome of the finest sites in the Côte d'Or,symbolises the traditions and the excellence ofthis small region, source of some of theworld's finest wines. Where the hills flankingthe valley of the river Saône give way to thevalley floor, the slopes provide uniqueconditions, allowing Pinot Noir andChardonnay to excel as nowhere else.

Based in Chablis for over 150 years, thehouse of SIMONNET-FEBVRE now

has a brand new winery in theneighbouring village of Chitry. Their

wines are exemplary, combininggenerous fruit with finesse and

elegance.

From its offices in Beaune the house ofLOUIS LATOUR presides over a

business more than 200 years old, thatnow encompasses offshoots in several

other French locations, as well as in theNew World.

Latour Burgundies are regarded acrossthe world as benchmark examples, and

span the entire region, from theoutskirts of Dijon in the north to the

Beaujolais in the south.

As well as being négociants, Latour areextensive owners of some of the primesites in Burgundy. Wines from their

own Domaines are made at the ChâteauCorton-Grancey winery, surrounded by

the Grand Cru vines of Corton.

Loire Valley & AlsaceMore diverse than other French wine regions, theLoire vineyards extend from Brittany and the sea inthe west nearly as far as Burgundy in the east. Inthis relatively cool northerly climate fresh whitewines predominate, notably Muscadet aroundNantes in the west from the Melon de Bourgogne, and Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé in the east, perhapsthe finest French examples of Sauvignon Blanc.Among the reds, Cabernet Franc achieves realcharacter at Chinon, and in Sancerre Pinot Noirsteps over from Burgundy to provide the colour.

The light and off dry rosés of Anjou, fresh with racy acidity, remain

deservedly popular.

Chenin Blanc is the leading whitegrape in Touraine, notably at

Vouvray.

At DOMAINE DE SAINT PIERRE,Bruno and Thierry Prieur exercisemeticulous management of their 17

hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and PinotNoir vines.

This, together with harvesting byhand and a cellar gleaming withstainless steel, ensures that theirSancerres are always spot on for

quality

The wines of JEAN GEILER aremade by the Cave Co-op. at

INGERSHEIM, just to the west ofColmar. This is right in the centre of

the ribbon of fine vineyards thatstretches the length of the Haut-Rhin

département, and the wines arecorrespondingly full flavoured and

stylish.

The Rhône ValleyPierre Amadieu

In addition to Gigondas (where it accounts for10% of the entire appellation) the familycompany Pierre Amadieu markets its ownproduction of Côtes du Rhône (produced in partfrom its young Gigondas vines), and other winesfrom the Rhône Valley strictly selected andchosen such as: Côtes du Rhône Villages,Vacqueyras, Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Crozes-Hermitage.

Made from hand picked bunchesof Syrah and Grenache and

fermented in stainless steel topreserve the full expression of

their natural fruit,AMADIEU's Côtes du Rhône

wines are redolent ofblackberry, blackcurrent andraspberry, with good balance

and soft tannins.

The Vacqueyras has perfectpoise, with greater weightand richness – fantasticquality for this price.

Six generations of the MOURIERfamily have been making wine in thenorthern Rhône Valley. Their currentfocus is on the DOMAINE PIERRE

BLANCHE in the Ardèche, where steepsided coombes provide excellent

conditions (with the help of incrediblyhard labour) for the fine Syrah grapes

that produce Saint Joseph.

Further south, the family have longstanding links with DOMAINE LOUGAËLOU at Lirac, west of Avignon. This is principally Grenache country,

and Lirac is an unsung hero of thesouthern Rhône region, producing

luxuriously rich and powerful wines.

At a point five miles west of the Rhôneand the town of Montélimar, where theArdèche gorge reveals soils similar to

those of Burgundy, LOUIS LATOURhas established a prime source of highquality Chardonnay, classified as Vin

de Pays des Côteaux de l'Ardèche.

French Regional WinesThe Mediterranean coastal region ofFrance, from the Rhône deltawestwards towards Roussillon andthe border with Spain, is known asthe Languedoc. Providing a naturalenvironment for grape growing, theregion has benefited greatly in recentyears from the widespread plantingof classic grape varieties, and is nowthe source of good value wines ofconsistent quality.

The wines of Cahors have always beenobscured by the greater fame and

accessibility of those of Bordeaux. Butit is here, deep in the hinterland of thesouth west of France, that Malbec is

truly at home.

The commune of Aniane has in recentyears seen significant investment from

a number of high profile producers(e.g. Daumas Gassac). Since 2000 thefamily behind Ch.Cissac in Bordeaux

have been active in developing theDOMAINE DE ST DOMINIQUE to

a level well above the regional norm.

A few miles west of Beziers, theprivately owned DOMAINEDE LA PROVENQUIÈRE

produces a simple,undemanding and delicious

rosé from a blend of Cinsault,Grenache and Syrah grapes, in

addition to a range ofindividual varietal wines of

exemplary quality.

The appellation Pays d'Oc is rathertoo all embracing to do proper justice

to the quality of the wines ofDOMAINE BERGON. Situated onthe coastal plain between Beziers andMontpelier, the estate produces veryattractive wines of textbook varietal

character and ripeness.

Wine enthusiast and specialist in healthfood ingredients, in particular gumarabic, a traditional wine processingagent, Gontran Dondain purchased thewine-growing domain, ChâteauCabezac, in 1997 with the aim ofrestoring the terroir to its proper placein the hierarchy of wine, an ambition hesatisfied within 10 years. In 2004 hisdaughter Stephanie, with a backgroundin advertising, joined the business tospearhead sales in France and abroad.

The MINERVOIS lies at the mid pointof the Languedoc, to the north of the

River Aude, set well inland from the sea,and is a remote region of rugged hills

and gorges and scubby forest ('maquis'),whose inhabitants have habitually

displayed great independence of mind(this was home to the Cathar movement

in the Middle Ages).

The vineyards of CHÂTEAUCABEZAC, some 53 hectares, lie about12 miles north west of Narbonne in four

different parcels, each with a distinctsoil structure, playing to the strengths

of the grape varieties employed.

'LE MONT DES CAPITELLES' - soildeep and poor, sloping ground with

southerly aspect, ideal for white varietiesand Grenache, giving finesse, aroma and

complexity.

'LES GARRIGOTS' - recent riveralluvium with high pebble content,

ensuring good drainage - excellent forlow yielding red varieties.

'LE PLATEAU DE BELVÈZE' -exceptional terroir at 200 metres

altitude, well drained and cooled bymountain breezes yielding some very

great wines.

'LE PLATEAU DE CAZELLES' - at350 metres altitude with significant

diurnal temperature differences duringsummer, conferring excellent aging

properties alongside finesse,concentration and complexity.

Northern ItalyTo judge by this picture of the grape festooned godBacchus, found in the ruins of Pompei, winemakingwas as much part of Italian life 2000 years ago as it istoday. The country is a collection of regions, eachwith its distinct grape varieties and wine styles, encompassing everything from lean, dry whites inthe (relatively) cool north to fat and chunky reds inthe decidedly warm south. Regional individualityand pride is normal throughout the country, and isparticularly marked in the extreme north, which washistorically Austrian and thus German speaking, inall but name remaining so today.

Sheltered by the Alps to the north andspared the Mediterranean heat of thesouth, the VENETO is the source of a

host of light, fresh wines offeringexcellent value for money.

The traditional favourites, Valpolicella,Bardolino and Soave, have been

somewhat upstaged in recent years bythe ever growing popularity of PinotGrigio. Dry, yet soft and supple, this

varietal is now available also in a Blushstyle, both wines servinig as ideal

aperitif items.

PROSECCO grapes are grown in thefoothills of the Dolomites north-west ofVenice, and make sparkling wines thatare incomparably lively, refreshing and

light.

Whilst the price of Barolo can reachdizzying heights, we are pleased that

VILLADORIA continue to produce amost acceptable quality at a reasonable

price.

Despite belonging to Italy for nearly100 years, the South Tyrol, one time

playground of the Hapsburgaristocracy, remains resolutely Germanwith regard to language and Austrianin culture. Where the Adige (or Etsch)Valley drives deep into the southern

flank of the Alps, the lower slopes of thevalley sides provide a unique terroir for

grape growing, producing wines ofimmense elegance and minerality.

Central & Southern ItalyThe enormous diversity of this area isreflected in the multitude of Italy's grapevarieties. A few, such as the workhorseTrebbiano, crop up all over the place, with local variations, but mainly, eachregion has its own distinct set.

SpainDespite greatly increased interest in thewines of Spain generally, Rioja remains byfar the most popular. As with red winesfrom many other parts of Spain, theprincipal grape is the Tempranillo, whichcrops up all over the country, usually hidingits identity behind a local alias. Ideallysuited to Spain's hot, dry climate,Tempranillo readily assimilates the vanillaflavours of new oak barrels – one factorbehind the popularity of the Crianza style.

Bodegas Muriel,Elciego, Rioja Alavesa

The Alavesa district lies at thenorthern limit of the Rioja region,

protected by the CantabrianMountains. The cooler conditionshere encourage wines of rathermore finesse and elegance thanthose from the hotter regions

further south. The style ofBODEGAS MURIEL winesreflects this character, whilst

offering generous fruitthroughout the range, from theunoaked Tinto and Seleccion,

through the well balancedCrianza, to the impressive Reserva and

Gran Reserva.

Marques de MurrietaJustly regarded as a leading Riojaestate, MURRIETA maintains a

century old tradition of excellance.

Bodegas Viña VilanoThe Ribera del Duero region, to the

north of Madrid, is perhaps the finestshowcase for the Tempranillo grape. The Legón range from Viña Vilano

display this varietal's versatility, fromvibrantly fruity young wines to maturewines of impressive concentration and

elegance, typified by the Reserva.

Spain, Portugal, AustriaPortugal has a host of grape varieties notfound anywhere else, that give its winesa distinct, and often very attractivecharacter. A rare import from Spain is theTempranillo, which affirms its pre-eminence in the Iberian Peninsular byplaying an important role, under thename of Tinta Roriz or Tinta Aragonez,in many of the red wines of Portugal, including Port.

The reputation of TORRES winesstretches right around the globe, and

represents one of Spain's greatest exportsuccess stories. Built on a strategy of

continuous innovation and meticulousattention to detail, the company has done

much to put Spain, not to mentionCatalonia, on the wine drinker's map.

BARÃO DE VILAR is an oldestablished Port producer withlongstanding connections withgrape growers along the valleyof the Douro. Some production

from this unique region isvinified as normal table wine

with a relativley modest alcoholcontent of 13%. The red Douro

is from traditional red portvarietals, such as TourigaFranca, Tinta Roriz (i.e.

Tempranillo), Tinto Cão andTinta Barroca. The white is a

succulent wine, dry andaromatic, from local varietals.

South of the Douro, the Dão regionproduces excellent, hearty, yet soft and

well rounded reds suitable with redmeats, spicy dishes or cheeses from

grapes that include Touriga Nacionaland Tinta Roriz.

JULIUS HAFNER takes advantage ofthe specially beneficial climatic conditions

of the Neusiedlersee to make somefascinating dessert wines, for which he

Despite itsubiquity at home and its ability toproduce wines of great character andstyle, from dry and minerally (Dürnberg)to concentrated and sweet (Hafner) onlysmall quantities manage to evade theclutches of the Austrians and becomeavailable for export.

WEINGUTDÜRNBERG is locatedin the traditional winevillage of Falkenstein,

which also happens to bethe historical heart of the

Weinviertel, north ofVienna. The cool character

of the white wines, withtheir vital acidity

structure, is the result ofan exceptional terroir.

Thanks to excellent soilsand a highly favourableclimate, the grapes reachan ideal level of ripeness

and develop vibrantaromas and flavours.

At WEINGUT SCHLOSSBERG theWertek family run a successful 'heurige'for visitors from nearby Vienna. Their

well produced wines are made in limitedquantities, and we are lucky that they

AustraliaWinemakers the world over are subject to anxiety. In much of Europe, for instance, they fret about notgetting enough sun to ripen their grapes. InAustralia they worry about getting too much. Lackof water is a problem, too, especially during therecent years of drought. Driven by the need toretain freshness and balance, the Australianwinegrowing industry has been responsible formajor technical innovations in both the vineyardand the cellar. Whilst reliability is never an issue, individuality is at risk of being engineered out ofthe equation at lower price levels.

Characterised by upfront fruit, thesewines are typically 'easy to drink'. The

reds are generous, soft and rich. Thewhites are big, and practically off dry in

style. Utterly dependable in quality, they are made in large volume from fruit

grown on the plains adjoining theMurray-Darling river system, where

the hot climate necessitates irrigation ofthe vineyards at the same time as

ensuring total ripeness.

The BROWN BROTHERSvineyards, located throughoutVictoria, are as varied as the

wines and wine styles. Withina 50km radius of Milawa,

climatic conditions range fromcool alpine areas to lushtemperate valleys to sun

drenched plains. Each of thevineyards has been selected onthe basis of their suitability for

the variety or wine style.

GEOFF MERRILL has been makingwine at the Mount Hurtle winery on the

outskirts of Adelaide for nearly threedecades with a passion rare even for anAustralian. With an emphasis on whatis locally known as'regionality', as wellas maturity, these are wines that stand

UruguaySandwiched between two giants, Argentinaand Brazil, Uruguay receives scant attentionfrom the rest of the world, yet it has a wineindustry to be proud of, capable ofproducing quality at least as good asanything coming from the Andes, over 1000kilometers to the west. In the south of thecountry, near the capital, Montevideo, bordering the estuary of the Rio de la Plata, the climate is moderate and maritime, notdissimilar to that of Bordeaux.

THE TANNAT GRAPE

19th century emmigrés toSouth America from southwest France took their local

vine varieties with them. Thus Carmenère took rootin Chile and Malbec found

its way to Mendoza.Meanwhile the FrenchBasques who settled in

Uruguay brought their localTannat. Plantings in

Uruguay now far exceedthose in France, where the

variety survives as the maingrape in the wines of

Madiran. By nature darkand tannic, Tannat appearsto ripen better in Uruguay,

giving wines of a softer, riper style thanin France, and though by no meanslacking in structure, ready to drink

much earlier.

GIMENEZ MENDEZ isan established family

the production of finewines. Marta Gimenez

Mendez and her two sons ,Luis and Mauro, produce

fine wines with acommitment to quality andexcellence attainable only

in a truly family enterprise. Theiremphasis is on wines of balance and

finesse, rather than the macho extremesof style one encounters elsewhere in the

South AfricaWith a history of wine making dating backto the late 1600's, South Africa is 'NewWorld' with a very small 'n'. Many of thefamous estates in the Cape have moreheritage than their counterparts in Europe. Now that the straitjacket that stifled theindustry during the apartheid era has gone, the country offers choice and vitalityaplenty.

AFRICAN TERROIR are made atthe Sonop Wine Farm at Paarl in the

be made entirely by Africans.

The organic varietal blends representespecially good value for money,

The hinterland of Cape Town is hometo numerous fine wine estates whichcan trace their history as far back as

three centuries, asNEETHLINGSHOF does. Another

notable example is MEERLUST,which makes wines whose quality andrefinement its (in many cases much

younger) European counterparts canonly aspire to.

New ZealandMuch smaller than Marlborough, itsbetter known neighbour to the east,Nelson has an even better climate, withthe greatest number of sunshine hours ofanywhere in New Zealand. Nelson'stemperate, maritime climate is highlybeneficial for wine production. Highsunshine hours and the cool, clear skiesof autumn provide a slow ripeningperiod that helps retain vibrant varietalflavours.

balance the natural vigor of the vineswhile contributing highly desirablemineral characteristics to the wines.

Total annual production runs to around20,000 cases.

MoroccoAfrica it may be, but the dominant influence on winemakingalong the northern limits of this continent is French. Neitherthe grape varieties involved nor the technology employedwould look particularly 'foreign' if transported to thenorthern side of the Mediterranean. Moderated by theproximity of the Atlantic at Casablanca and the AtlasMountains at Meknes, the warmth of these southerlyregions ensures that healthy grapes can be harvested with aminimum of intervention on the part of the grower.

THALVIN wine production dates backto 1968 with the acquisition of 400

LebanonViticulture in Lebanon was introduced 6000years ago by the Phoenicians who traded theirwines throughout the Mediterranean andplanted the vine in southern Europe. Activity iscentred on the Bekaa Valley in the east of thecountry, where the vineyards are almost frostand disease free, with long mild summers, rainywinters with an annual rainfall of 500mm, andan average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.

Situated on the site of a former Crusaderfortress or ksar, KSARA is the oldest ofLebanon's wineries in the modern era.

150 years ago Jesuit monks took over thevestigial vineyards that had somehow

survived centuries of Ottoman rule, andrevitalised production based on the

introduction of a range of noble Frenchgrape varieties

Climatic conditions in the Bekaa provideKSARA's vineyards withexceptional advantages.

There is almost no rainfallduring the growing seasonand diseases seldom strike

the vines. KSARA's grapescan be considered to be

grown organically becausepesticides and herbicides are

not used.

The wines of KSARA age in spaciousunderground galleries, in use since

Roman times, where the temperature inboth summer and winter only varies

between 11 and 13°C and provides theessential conditions for bringing wine to

its peak of perfection.

CHÂTEAU MUSAR'svineyards are located at an

altitude of over 3,000 feet (1,000metres) in the Bekaa Valley

where the vines are sheltered bythe surrounding mountains

running parallel to theMediterranean coast. They cover

180 hectares and produce alimited yield of about 35 hl/ha.

The grapes are transported toGhazir on the coast some 30 miles to thewest, where vinification takes place inthe cellars of the 17th century castle.

South East Asia, India & JapanThere is no question that winemaking in thetropics requires a degree of eccentricity. Howelse do you cope with such oddities aswineyards 'floating' in a river delta, twogrape harvests a year, picking grapes by boat(or by elephant on terra firma)? These are justsome of the factors that the Siam Winery hasto contend with in making what isnevertheless a very acceptable range of winesthat is proving popular with diners in Thairestaurants.

The MONSOON VALLEY range ofwines was developed for theexpress purpose of matching

the hot, spicy and sweetcharacter of Thai cuisine.

This gastronomicallyunauthodox ambitionhas in large measurebeen achieved by theequally unauthodoxviticultural practicesemployed by the SiamWinery. IndigenousMalaga Blanc and

Pokdum grapesgrown on 'floating' vineyardsin the Chao Phraya Delta, near

Bangkok, provide the basis of theentry level wines, to which are

added Colombard and Shiraz grown inthe Hua Hin Hills to the south.

Nothing symbolises betterthe way that India is

hurtling into the 21st centurythan the development of its

wine industry. From astanding start barely 10

years ago, Europeanvarietals have literally taken

root in the Nasik Valleysome four hours drive north

of Mumbai on the west coast. From these the SOUL TREE

wines are made in a mostconvincing modern style.
