THE MESSENGER

One of the things that fascinates

me about the church living amid a

rapidly changing culture is how

flexible we are having to become to

keep abreast of the ministry man-

date we have from God. As a child

growing up within the church, it

was not unusual to spend six to

seven hours a week in worship,

study, training and practicing for

ministry. Not so any more. With so

many things vying for our time, we

are fortunate to get people at the

church building two hours a week

every other week.

An unproductive response to this is

to grieve and bemoan the death of

cultural Christianity. Rather, we

must adapt to a rapidly changing

society and church. Why though?

Simply this, Jesus Christ is still and

always will be the only hope we

have in a dying world. And, the

church is the only platform God has

to bring Jesus to that dying world.

With that in mind, this Sunday,

May 7, we are going to step out of

the normal in an attempt to reach

as many people as we can with an

important message.

The International Mission Board’s

film, The Insanity of God is based

on the best-selling book by the

same name. It is the true story of

missionaries Nik and Ruth Ripken.

After the death of their son, this or-

dinary couple journeys into the

depths of the persecuted church,

asking the question, “Is Jesus

worth it?”

How does faith survive, let alone

flourish in places of the world that

are overcome with the darkness of

sin, despair and hopelessness?

Join the Ripkens as they tell the

story of being taught by believers in

persecution “how to follow Jesus,

how to love Jesus, and how to walk

with Him day by day, even when it

doesn’t make sense.”

IMB President David Platt says, “It

will change your perspective on

what it means to follow Jesus, and

your life will be changed.”

There will be no Sunday School or

regular worship that day. We will

assemble at 9:00 AM for a light

breakfast and time of fellowship

together (our youth will be serving

and taking tips to assist with the

cost of camp). At 10:00 AM we will

show the film in the sanctuary with

a worship and response time at

11:30 AM.

Another item in May is Mother’s

Day. It has been our recent tradi-

tion to observe this from the per-

spective, that while not everyone of

us is a mother, we all had a moth-

er. We come to honor and show

respect to that person in our life as

we are commanded in the Scrip-

tures to do. Interestingly and excit-

edly our children, with Cherry’s

leadership, will lead us in worship

that morning. Also, I would like to

take time that Sunday morning to

do a “Parent – Child” Dedication

Service.

So, it is my hope that you find the

first two Sunday’s in May challeng-

ing and even maybe a little uncom-

fortable as we seek to follow Jesus

in our mission, reaching and trans-

forming our community in His

name.
