CHRISTMAS AT CENTRAL

2

“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’” –Psalm 46:10a

I’ve been thinking a lot about our clothes washer. Have you ever

thought about what it might be like to be a sock in your washer?

Water starts filling up the drum. Soon you are covered in soapy

water. But that is just when the craziness begins.

In the center of top-load washers, there is a rotating cylinder with fins, which is called an agitator. The

agitator is a violent tool. It agitates, or stirs up, the water, soap, and dirty socks. The clothes are swirled

around, thrown against the sides of the drum and mixed together. To a dirty sock it must feel like the

world is coming to an end.

For many people right now they feel like a dirty sock in a top-load washer. Regardless of your position on

the presidential candidates and the various election outcomes, regardless of your position on a number of

different social issues, regardless of your stance on a number of different moral positions, the world feels

very mixed up, stirred up, and you or someone you know is a little or possibly very agitated.

I imagine Mary and Joseph felt a little mixed up. Their world was turned upside down when angels came

with the news that they would be the earthly parents of the Savior of the world. This unmarried couple

resided in a small town on the edge of nowhere in a land conquered by enemies who thought they were a

worthless and backward people -dirty socks spinning out of control in a top-load washer.

Yet, somehow in the midst of this world of chaos, God did something beautiful. Out of this time of great

instability and turmoil, God put in motion a plan that would save the world and give hope…even to the

agitated. God has a beautiful way of bringing peace out of the chaos.

God is never uncertain. God is never terrified. God is never scrambling to figure out what is going to

happen next. Instead, God calls out to the dirty socks of the world, “Be still. I got this. Trust in me because I

am God.” No matter what you are struggling with this Advent/Christmas season, rest assured that God is

more than capable. He may not always remove us from the washer right away (after all, agitation can bring

a dirty sock to greater usefulness), but God is present with us in the midst of the uncertainty.

To help you in this process make sure you join us in the sanctuary at our new 9:15 a.m. worship time to see

how God is often bringing Peace Out of Chaos.

FAMILY ADVENT NIGHT

Please join us in the Garden Room where we will

celebrate the season with another Central

tradition: Food! Join us for a chili supper and warm

Christmas cookies, hot cider and some easy holiday

crafts. If you can provide a pot of chili, please contact

Julie Reed at [email protected]. We will still

try to provide transportation. Please call the church

office if you need transportation.

ANGEL TREE gifts (wrapped or not) must be un-

der the Parlor tree by December 11. Helpers

and Elves are needed to wrap and organize the

gifts. Please call Gloria Millay (812-476-9988)

with any questions. Also, on the morning of

Christmas Eve (8:00 a.m.) we need Elves to deliv-

er the gifts.

LOAVES & FISHES

Remember your loved one(s) with a gift to Central’s

Loaves & Fishes Ministry. This program helps the

people from the nearby neighborhood who have a

need for emergency assistance whether it be for

rent, utilities or another emergency need.

POINSETTIAS

Remember your loved one(s) with a pink, white or

red poinsettia ($10.00). Sunday, December 11, will

be the last day to order. The poinsettias will be

displayed as decorations to beautify our sanctuary

starting December 18. If you would like to take

yours home after the Christmas Eve Service you are

more than welcome.

wonderful cooks from the Compass Class do your

Christmas is almost here! The children are already

preparing for our Christmas Program on Tuesday,

December 13 at 6:30 p.m. Our families will pack the

sanctuary and be entertained by the toddler through

pre-k children. Ms. Carol Hodges’ room will continue

the tradition and present the story of Jesus’ birth.

Church members are invited to attend. Santa will

visit us on Friday, December 16 and we will enjoy the

Polar Express in our jammies on Thursday,

December 22. We are very thankful for a wonderful

year at Central Child Care and look forward to 2017

with excitement in the Lord’s plans for us!
