It’s The Coffee, Not The Cup
I ran across this story awhile back;
it makes me want to start off the
‘real’ year (that is, September-
August) on the right foot! Here it
is:
A group of alumni, well
established in their careers, got
together to visit their former
university professor at her home.
Conversation soon turned to stress
in work and life. Offering her
guests coffee, the professor went
to the kitchen and returned with
a large pot of coffee and an
assortment of cups that were
porcelain, glass, some plain
looking, some expensive. She
then invited them to help
themselves to the coffee.
When each of them had a cup of
coffee in hand, the professor said:
"If you noticed, all the nice
looking, expensive cups were
taken up, leaving behind the
plain ones. While it is normal for
you to want only the best for
yourselves, that is the source of
your problems and stress.
Be assured that the cup itself
adds no quality to the coffee."
What all of you really wanted
was coffee, not the cup, but
you consciously went for the
best cups. And then you began
eyeing each other's cups.
Now consider this: Life is the
coffee; the jobs, money and
position in society are the cups.
They are just tools to hold and
contain Life, and the type of
cup we have does not define,
nor change the quality of Life
we live." Sometimes, when we
concentrate on the cup, we
fail to enjoy the coffee.
God brews the coffee. As your
new year kicks off, enjoy your
coffee… and be sure to give
thanks to the One who brews it!
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Hawkins

SCRIP order on September 2nd. Since this
is Labor Day weekend, you can place
your order the Sunday before and leave
it in the office for Laurie Buckett if you
are going to be out of town on the 2nd.
When ordering, remember our initiative for the Laur
family. Walmart and Kwiktrip cards would be
appreciated OR Visa 5 Back cards. Pastor Nansi’s supply
of gas & grocery cards for the Congregational Care Fund
is completely gone. Aldi, Walmart & Kwik Trip $25 cards
would be appreciated!
It’s back to regular monthly
meetings beginning
Wednesday, September 12, 1-3
PM in fellowship hall. ALL ladies
of Emmanuel are welcome to
attend! We begin with dessert
and coffee, then go on to a
short business meeting and discussion time.
Frieda Goetsch and Vera Ortmann are September’s
hostesses. Remember to bring donations for the Lake
Country Free Clinic in Oconomowoc!
Our Board of Trustees is holding an
Emmanuel Work Day on Saturday,
September 22 from 8 AM – 2 PM.
Projects that need attention include
painting the ceiling of the drive-
through at the main entrance,
replacing rotten siding and window
trim on the north side of the church,
cutting down the 2 large pines in
front of the sanctuary and cleaning/organizing the
garage. We need LOTS of viable human bodies to
accomplish all these tasks. Trustees is hoping you will be
able to free up your schedules and help! A sign-up sheet
has been posted in the gathering area.

MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL We had a busy week hosting
five different families the last
of July and the beginning of
August. They were good
eaters for the most part and all the meals were delicious.
One family left during the week but we quickly filled their
spot with a mother and her three children. Our volunteers
know the need for flexibility and kindness and that is just
what was shown. Thanks to all of you that worked
together to make our guests feel welcomed.
Our support church, St. Mary’s of Dousman, is going
through some changes since Father Scott has relocated
to serve an Episcopal church in Greendale and the
volunteer coordinator has moved. Hopefully, we will not
feel too much of the effects of these changes and will
continue to build our base of trained volunteers. If you
wish to work with Family Promise and need training,
please talk to Sue Stelling or Charlotte Voigt.
Our next rotation is in six weeks – the first week in October!
The quick return of our host week was due to scheduling
needs of several other churches. This will be our last turn
for 2018. Your hours of service are greatly appreciated
by your fellow volunteers (many hands make light work)
and the guests of Family Promise.
Kiosk Collections The kiosk in the church foyer has drawers labeled for
different things we collect on an ongoing basis. It’s a
great way to get rid of unneeded items and help out at
the same time:
Grocery receipts from Albrecht’s Sentry store in
Delafield. We receive a rebate of the total receipts
we submit. Those rebates help our bottom line!
Empty printer ink cartridges are turned in at Office
Max to earn credit for Emmanuel purchases.
First Aid items/new toothbrushes/OTC pain meds
(unopened) are given to the Free Clinic in
Oconomowoc.
Used cell phones and chargers are sold on eBay with
proceeds benefiting our bottom line.
Used eye glasses are given to the Dousman Lions
Club: throughout the year, Lions, Leos and other
volunteers collect used eyeglasses and deliver them
to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers (LERCs).
LERC volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength
and package the glasses. Recycled glasses are
distributed to people in need in low and middle
income communities where they will have the
greatest impact.
Please place them in the
kiosk drawer (in the foyer)
marked for cell phone
collection. THANK YOU Bill
Welch who turns those old
phones into dollars for
Emmanuel by selling them
on Ebay.
God’s Gifts.
The Gift of Our Presence be a gift.
When we pledge to support the
church with our presence, we may
think of it as more of a commitment, a
requirement, but our presence can be
a gift to others. We never really know
the effect our presence has on others,
but it is real. We may not even need
to say a word for our presence to be
felt by another. This phenomenon is
often know among clergy as “the
ministry of presence.” During my
lifetime, I have been privileged to be
in the presence of church folks whose lives gave
testimony to their faith. Their presence (knowing them)
was a gift that fostered faith development in others. Our
presence encourages each other, we become rooted in
a community of faith. Some of us may have been called
to this place seeking answers to life’s questions. Then
surprisingly we may discover that somewhere along the
path of interconnection, the answers once sought have
become less important than our growing awareness that
we can live with the questions and still remain faithful and
able to call life precious. Our presence, the sharing of our
lives in even the simplest of ways, is a gift that can touch
others beyond measure. That is something for which we
can be forever grateful.
Thank you’s & Prayers...
