Dear UNC Graduates,

Commencement marks a milestone in both

your journey of lifelong learning and the life of the

University of Northern Colorado. As you refl ect on

your accomplishments and look forward to new

opportunities, know that you are part of more than

a century’s tradition on our campus.

In 1890, when civic leaders, educators and citizens from Greeley and across

the State of Colorado gathered to celebrate laying the cornerstone of our fi rst

building, they spoke of universal education as the foundation for our future.

Governor Job A. Cooper told the crowd: “It is the enlightened conscience and

educated intelligence of the many that will ultimately crowd back all corruption

and anarchy, and harmonize contending factions and dissipate the dangers

that threaten our country. Upon this foundation stone laid today will rise an

institution to prepare leaders in this great work.”

As graduates, you will leave here today to become the leaders envisioned by

our founders. Earning a UNC degree is about more than books and knowledge.

It is about nurturing the mind and the heart, seeing potential in the unknown,

and preparing to give back to society. If you look at the array of professions

— the lives — we prepare students for, many are public service oriented. UNC

graduates don’t just make money; they make a diff erence.

As you continue your journey of lifelong learning, you can be proud to be part

of a distinguished group of UNC alumni who are making a diff erence across the

country and around the world.

A letter from UNC President Kay Norton

Education changes graduate’s view of the world

By Tommy [email protected]

Daniel Perez never feared the filtered lens a college education would provide him. For much of his college career, the history and philosophy dou-ble major lived with two other students who were also involved in the philosophy department. What happened in class figured prominently into the informal discussions that took place around the roommates’ dining room table. “History and philosophy have shaped my world view to some extent,” Perez said. “When we have those discussions, we do reach into our major and talk about that. But it’s also an in-ternal practice. When you understand more, it grants you a different perspective.” That different perspective only came with time while he was in college, he said. Despite being in a number of advanced placement classes in high school, Perez said college introduced him to a process of learning that enabled him to think in the way he does now. “I was in all AP classes senior year,” he said. “And in high school, they’ll tell you those classes prepare you, and they don’t. So I came in thinking I was prepared due to the classes, and I wasn’t.” During the four years in college, Perez worked for the conces-

sions department of UNC’s dining services, first accepting a posi-tion as a student supervisor during his sophomore year and later as student manager at the start of his senior year. Concessions was another forum that helped Perez become the person he is today. “Concessions was great,” Perez said. “It was incredibly valuable to create a different circle of friends, and it’s easier to have the structure of a job in freshman year. And I still run into people I worked with freshman year and haven’t worked with since, and we’re still able to talk.” Those groups of friends and their support held great impor-tance during his college career—pursuing two majors, both of which were time-consuming and heavily involved studying and writing. “College is different. It’s hard, and there’s a reason not everyone graduates,” Perez said. “It takes up a lot of time. It’s always im-portant to relax and breathe, and remember that you always have your groups of friends, and that everyone is going through this.” After achieving his degree, Perez said he is not yet ready for his academic career to end. “My goal is to apply to and be accepted to a graduate program by next May,” Perez said. “Probably for public history or a mu-seum studies program. I’m thinking of maybe doing it online so that I could work full time.” With a strong passion for history and philosophy and a general love of learning, Perez has many aspirations. “I wouldn’t mind teaching college,” Perez said.

Breelyn Bowe | The MirrorDaniel Perez, double majoring in history and philosophy, said his time in college has shaped his perspective on the world.

UNC Spring Graduation 2015

New destinations await Asian studies majorBy Makalah Emanuel

[email protected]

The luxury of travel-ing out of the country is not frequently granted. But that is not the case for LaMeisha Johnson, who is graduating with a major in Asian studies and a minor in Chinese. Johnson has not only left the country once to visit China during her college career, but following her graduation she will be returning—only this time, it’ll be for a longer stay. Eleven days after she walks across the stage to receive her diploma, Johnson will board a plane headed for Xing. While in Xing, Johnson will learn more about the Chinese language and engage in a study

abroad program focusing on Chinese research. From Xing, Johnson will travel to Beijing for a week be-fore arriving in Taiyuan—what will soon be her new home. “There I’ll be teaching Eng-lish at an elementary school,” Johnson said. “I don’t know the grade level or school name yet. I’ll find all that out when I get there. Hopefully I’ll get kindergartners.” Although she did not origi-nally come to college to study Asian studies, Johnson said her time with the program has proved to be worthwhile. Johnson said she looks for-ward to her future but hasn’t forgotten her past or the mem-ories that come with it. Johnson, who studied vocal performance before switching to Asian studies, said she was encouraged by her advisor to

sing a Chinese song during a UNC celebration of the Lu-

nar New Year. Without much knowledge of the Chinese lan-

guage, Johnson said she’d give it a try. The results, as Johnson ex-plained, were pretty bad. Dur-ing her sophomore year trip to China, Johnson was asked to sing the song again, only this time it was during karaoke and in front of a Chinese audience. Once again, Johnson gave it a try, and once again, she said she failed. “It was horrible,” Johnson said. “I’m pretty sure no one understood anything that I said.” As the days dwindle down to graduation, Johnson has reflected on her journey as a college student. “College just teaches you how to grow up without your parents always being there,” Johnson said. “My advice for incoming freshmen is to stay up on everything that comes

with college like financial aid, classes, homework—every-thing. Stay up on everything when you first get here be-cause it kind of sucks hav-ing your parents help with all that stuff, then you have to do it by yourself later. You can get confused.” As for the future, Johnson said she plans to fully embrace her time in China.  “I don’t really plan on com-ing back to America right away,” Johnson said. “I really just want to hon-estly use this time to get all of the traveling out of my system. Since I’m in China, I’m go-ing to see all of China. Every-where that I could possibly go, I’m going to go. I’d also like to travel to Japan and South Ko-rea. I have really big goals to travel, so I’m just going to do it,” she continued.

Ye In Morris | The MirrorLaMeisha Johnson will be traveling throughout Asia after she graduates from UNC this weekend.

Kevin Kantor: Finding power in poetry

By La’Asianee Brown [email protected]

Q: Recently you were interviewed by Buzzfeed about a poem you performed during CUPSI, about seeing your rapist on

Facebook. How was that experience and seeing your interview among the other Buzzfeed news stories?

A: The attention the poem has been getting is awe-inspiring. Firstly, I’ve been getting hundreds of messages a day from

people all over the world sharing their support and love.

Also, it’s been incredible to see an art form like spoken word so warmly received. Buzzfeed, of course, garnered it the most

traction. It was such a bizarre experience to see it trending as number one right above an article about Jennifer Lawrence’s cur-rent hairstyle—which, of course, I found amusing. Possibly the most fulfilling experience I’ve had with the piece going viral is to see the tenants that began SOAPbox operating on a global scale. Give love. Accept love. The messages I’ve received from viewers, the stories they’ve shared, the outpour of positive feedback and love have astounded me.

Q: Who is someone who inspires you daily?

A: I am consistently inspired by my peers here at UNC and my fellow members of SOAPbox. It has been a privilege to

watch them grow as people and artists. Bianca Phipps, Sienna Burnett and Spencer Althoff just to name a few. They exemplify the conviction that what we do matters—that art has the capacity to change lives, and thus, worlds.

Q: Tell us more about how SOAPbox came to be. What in-spired you to create this production company?

A: It’s that belief that led me to create SOAPbox in the first place, and I couldn’t think of more capable hands to be leav-

ing it in upon my graduation. It all started in a Wiebking dorm room. We wanted to produce a theater piece we thought tackled larger sociopolitical issues while giving more students the oppor-tunity to exercise their skills. Since then, we’ve produced more than a half a dozen shows, countless staged readings and garnered international acclaim through our poetry slams.

Q: What’s next for Kevin Kantor?

A: I’m still in the decision making process as to what city I’ll be relocating to in the fall to further pursue my career in theater

arts. The attention my poetry has received might also facilitate a short tour in the fall, which is something I’ve always wanted to do. Whatever it may be, every day I am excited for tomorrow.

Acting major and founder of SOAPbox productions shares his experience at UNC

With graduation right around the corner, the University of Northern Colorado softball seniors look back at their time at the university and also to their future. These players have come from across the na-tion and some across the globe. But there is one senior whose journey was only about half an hour away. Just a short drive southwest of Kaitlin Flynn’s college life is Johnstown, Colorado, where the senior third baseman grew up. During her time with Triple Crown Sports playing softball, Flynn was first introduced to playing both shortstop and third base. Despite being difficult positions to play, Flynn said it is where the fun is on the field. “You see lots of action,” Flynn said. “It’s the hardest job, but it’s also the most fun. It’s like you fail so much, you want to perfect it.” Flynn brings a certain kind of energy and ex-citement both on and off the softball field that really makes her unique to the team and to the university. Before her games, Flynn can often be found with her teammates dancing to the mu-sic over the loud speaker with a giant smile on her face. “Our whole team just looks to Kaitlin Flynn, and they kind of feed off of her energy,” UNC head coach Shana Easley said. “Another spec-tacular person, and so well-rounded, feeding positivity into our team and being able to step up in situations when we need her to.” Flynn has been coined the “UNC Super

Fan” by some—and that is not just to her sport. Throughout the year, she can be found sitting in the stands of volleyball games, basketball games and just about every other sport on campus, cheering on her peers and trying to pump up the home crowd. But before she became the Northern Colora-do super fan, she was playing with Triple Crown under head coach Stephanie Klaviter, and she wasn’t thinking about college ball. But Klaviter encouraged Flynn to pursue softball at the col-legiate level. “I don’t think she knew how good she was,” Klaviter said. “She’s blessed athletically. She was the best athletic ball player that we had. I just had to make her confident and give her a

little push.” And Flynn proved Klaviter right, as she has been a starter in almost every game in her four-year career at UNC. But as the season comes to a close, so does No. 25’s career as a UNC Bear. Flynn will graduate on Saturday, and she hopes to focus on helping people as a career. Over the summer, Flynn will head back to Triple Crown to coach and help out young play-ers in the program. Flynn said that she isn’t sure that she wants to be a coach, but Klaviter said Flynn would be a perfect fit for coaching. Flynn said she also wants to help people out-side of sports. “I want to help the future,” Flynn said. “Peo-

ple that don’t understand or have a path to go on—I want to be able to be the person that helps them.” While Flynn, like many other seniors, is look-ing forward to what they will be doing after graduation, she also looked back on her time on the softball team and her time at the university. “I think the biggest thing I’ll miss is just being a part of a team like this,” Flynn said. “And hav-ing all your best friends around you all the time. I always have so much fun—I don’t care if we are winning, losing, at practice or at games. I always have a good time.”

Three years ago, Marcus Forward stood at the brink of a life-changing decision. As his high school graduation date drew near, Forward knew he needed to choose a college to attend. Forward narrowed his options down to one vital criteria: Which school would provide him with the best new experiences. Now, as he prepares for the completion of his undergraduate degree in sport and exercise sci-ence with a minor in Africana studies, Forward is able to look back and recognize all the new ex-periences the University of Northern Colorado has provided him. “Between the three schools that wanted me to play football for them, UNC was a different out-let compared to the other two schools. The other

schools were in Michigan, and I had seen those schools multiple times since I was 6 years old,” Forward said. “I knew what to expect if I went there, and I wanted something new—something I hadn’t seen before. Initially, there was a culture shock. But I think UNC has enabled me to meet a lot of different people and expand my knowl-edge on different cultures.” The lessons learned from living on his own is another experience Forward said he’ll be taking with him. “My mom has always tried to instill in me a go-get-it attitude and to make sure I control my own destiny,” Forward said. “Leaving Michigan and not depending on my mom to do all my paperwork and to take care of the things that I need showed me I need to take it upon myself to go find those resources that would put me in the best positions.” One of the positions that helped Forward was his role as an athlete. As a linebacker for the

Bears, Forward said he’s been subject to a differ-ent atmosphere of academic attainment than the typical college student. “When you’re an athlete, you’re on a cer-tain schedule,” Forward said. “I can’t put cer-tain work off until another day, because I may have practice.” Though Forward is completing his under-graduate degree, he still has two more years of football playing eligibility. As he continues play-ing football for the university, Forward said he’ll also be expanding his academic pursuits. “While I’m playing football, I’ll be taking some prerequisites that will enable me to enter the graduate program of biomedical sciences.” Becoming a physician’s assistant wasn’t For-ward’s original plan upon his graduation, but after conducting some research and seeking advisement, he said he decided to temporarily switch gears. “I initially wanted be an athletic trainer, but

pursuing an athletic trainer degree at this school while being an athlete is near impossible,” For-ward said. “While going through the sport and exercise science field and reminiscing on times as a volunteer at the hospitals, I realized that I enjoy working at a hospital. I also want to be able to be in charge of the health care of athletes and not just be limited to the rehabilitation of it, so I put my athletic trainer desires on hold. Eventually, I’d like to work as an athletic train-er for a prestigious university or professional sports club.” Forward said the best advice he could give is to simply exercise the art of communication. “Don’t be scared to talk to the coaching staff about any personal problems,” Forward said. “I know of a lot of people who come in and feel overwhelmed. It comes back to bite them.”

What I’ll miss (or won’t miss) at UNC is...Shayla O’Rourke Special education major

Well, all I will miss are my roommates and the people I have met. I will not miss the long drives home or the amount of homework.

Suzanne Evans Journalism and mass communications major with an emphasis in news-editorial

When I think about my time at UNC, I don’t regret rushing through school to finish and leave in three years. But the longer I have been here, the more I’ve realized that Greeley is sort of a hidden gem. Things actually go on here—there’s a culture. I will miss the lifestyle surrounding the college and downtown Greeley.

Korey Williams Sport and exercise science major

I’m going to miss all my friends I’ve met up here. I’ve met some unique people and built life-long relationships. These people have helped me stay in col-lege and motivated me to keep pushing forward and earn my degree, and because of them, I can say I am a college graduate.

Zach Benck History and political science major

The thing I am going to miss most about UNC is the won-derful experience I have had working as an Resident As-sistant. I certainly won’t miss the smell of cows or the Wiebking piano.

Jon Paul Escarcega Psychology major

Something that I will miss at UNC is feeling a sense of connectedness with other students. Everyone is working on their own goals in their own ways, and it has been nice knowing I have both given and received support to and from others to help meet those goals. There really isn’t anything I will not miss—wait, except for 8 a.m. classes and finals. I will not miss those.
