Tuesday Workshop Descriptions

September 10, 2013

10:45 a.m. Understanding How Each State Utilizes the LOSS Team Model in Their State,

Frank Campbell, Ph.D., LCSW, C.T., Moderator

This presentation will provide a multi-state perspective on how 5 different states have developed

LOSS teams. The LOSS Team is an example of a dynamic, community-based effort to provide post-

vention activities.

12:25 p.m. Research Findings on Postvention, Brittany Buquoi, Ph.D., MSW, LICSW,

The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative research study was to examine in great detail

the experiences of members of an active postvention team for survivors of suicide. This team is

referred to as the Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors (LOSS) team in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

This study also assesses potential benefits and detriments of being an active member of the team. I

n this phenomenological research study, seven participants criteria were interviewed. The modified

version of van Kaam’s methods for organization, analysis, and synthesis of data presented in

Moustakas (1994) was used.

1:00 p.m. Family Needs Following the Suicide of a Teenager, A Phenomenological Study,

David Miers, Ph.D., LIPC,

The objective of this phenomenological study was to develop an understanding of family needs fol-

lowing the suicide of a teenager. Parent units living in the Midwest who have lost a teenager to sui-

cide, were interviewed. Participants in the present study indicated several key themes that describe

parent needs following the suicide of a teenager. These needs are: Support by listening and re-

sponding, support from another suicide survivor, support in finding direction, support in seeing the

teen, support in remembering the teen, and support in giving back. The research findings present

implications for mental health professionals, first responders, suicide survivor intervention teams,

and support networks.

1:30 – 3:00 p.m.

Impact of Language on Survivors of Loss: Helping Clinical Professionals, Clergy and

Gatekeepers Use Appropriate Language with Persons Who are Survivors of Suicide

Loss as They Grieve, Donald P. Belau, Ph.D.,

The language of loss is unique, and individualized when one is confronted with the loss of someone

to suicide. LOSS Team members become skilled at adapting the language of loss, particularly if

they have a sense as to current best practice. This workshop will give hands on opportunity to de-

velop and practice the use of loss language that can promote healing. These are words that newly

bereaved will cling to as they move forward.

LOSS Team Networking Session, Frank Campbell Ph.D., LCSW, C.T., and Molly Smith, MS,

This session will Identify what is needed from LOSS Teams from across the Country to feel

supported and connected to each other; to share resources and helpful strategies; to contribute

to nation-wide expansion of LOSS Teams.

3:15 – 4:45 p.m.

Research on Postvention, Lezlie Culver, B.A.,

Postvention and Loss for Military Family and Friends, Kim Ruocco, MSW, LSW,

This workshop will provide a better understanding of the unique culture of military families

and how this effects pre and postvention. It will include an in depth review of the comprehend-

sive peer based postvention care provided by TAPS.

Closing Wreath Ceremony

A Healing Ceremony commemorating those who have died by suicide and those who are surviving

their loss will be held at the close of Day 1. A Wreathe of Healing will be created by those In

attendance using feathers which are recognized as a symbol of healing.

John Jordan, Ph.D., Morning Plenary

“A Time for Grieving: What Makes Mourning a Death by Suicide So Different?”

The loss of a loved one to suicide can be devastating and often very different from other types of

losses. There are many aspects of grief after suicide that may make the mourning process very

difficult, including the feelings of shock, guilt, rejection, and social stigma that may follow. This

talk will address some of the ways that mourning after suicide may be different for individuals

and families. It will also discuss things that suicide survivors (those who are grieving a loss to

suicide) can do to help themselves recover, resources that are available, and realistic expecta

tions for what the healing journey might look like for survivors.

Frank Campbell, Ph.D., LCSW, C.T.,

LOSS Team Training an all day session providing an opportunity for communities to send a 5

member team to be trained on the LOSS Team Model

1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Survivor Panel: A look at Active Postvention and no Postvention: Which is Right for

Your Community?

This workshop will allow you to hear from both sides of the coin, those survivors with a LOSS

Team response, and those without. Survivors will share their experiences; the similarities and

differences, the impact of a LOSS Team response, and their views today on LOSS Teams.

2:45 - 4:15 p.m. Workshops:

(Dr. Campbell’s LOSS Team Training Session continues)

Time for Making Meaning From this Tragedy:

Small breakout discussion groups for survivors to talk about their personal experience of losing

a loved one to suicide or to begin the process of making meaning from their experience. There

are two tracks to these workshop groups

A) Track I is for those survivors still feeling raw from their loss. This group will meet in

small group with a facilitated discussion by Dr. Jordan. Small groups to talk of con

tinuing support needs in their community that may be helpful as they continue to

carry their grief.

Solace for the Newly Bereaved,

B) Track II is for those more removed from their loss death and are ready to explore how

they can find a new sense of meaning in their life from their loss. People can select a

Meaning Making group for discussion and activity (for example, writing, music, story

telling about the loss)

1. Storytelling- Learning to Share Your Story,

2. Written Expression, Art and Music—Learning tools to help express

your grief and find meaning,
