A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER AND CEO

In 2016, your organization celebrated its 15thanniversary. 15 years spent teaching, feeding, nurturing, empowering, strengthening, anddelivering. Delivering education to orphans forwhom it had been inaccessible; deliveringshelter, skills, and support to grandmothers forwhom the lack of adequate housing, cleanwater and entrepreneurial opportunities meantthe inability to be the community’s corner-stones; delivering new hope to a communitygrappling with the effects of HIV/AIDS, forwhich all hope seemed lost.

In 2016, Nyaka’s holistic model delivered morethan ever before. It delivered more lesson plansand more meals to more students, providedmore medicine and immunizations to morecommunity members, and offered moreempowering microfinance loans to moregrandmothers than at any time in its history. Itcontinued to provide an example to commun-ities throughout the world that are in search ofa solution to mitigate the destructive physical, mental and emotional impacts of poverty, hunger, and hopelessness.

In 2017, yet again, there are orphans toeducate and feed, grandmothers to shelter andempower, a community to immunize, educateand strengthen. Nyaka’s decision to embark ona

a mission that by definition is never endingmeans, of course, that the work is never done.Educating, feeding, empowering, strength-ening. These are words for which, in thiscontext, there is no past tense and for whichthere will never be a reduced need. Ourdelivery model is complex, and this complexityis both the key driver of our success and thesource of one of our great challenges; thatbeing to convince those that have journeyedwith us, and those that are considering doingso, that there is merit in supporting a voyagethat appears to some to be interminable inlength and small in scale. That a missionfocused on delivering one lesson at a time, onemeal at a time, one loan at a time, and oneimmunization at a time is worth funding intoday’s pursuit of infinitely scalable solutions.

Indeed, we believe an education-focusedmodel such as this one is the utmost ininfinitely scalable models. After all, wherewould today’s big-bang successes be withoutthe underpinnings of education, delivered overdecades? While it will never be the case thatthe toolbox we use to drive away systemicdeprivation, hunger and poverty will becomefree, how this toolbox is funded will change. With each passing year the organization getscloser and closer to becoming self-sustaining.In time, as Nyaka’s alumni base grows and“gives back,” Nyaka’s need for external supportwill fall. Until this happens, we will continue tounabashedly ask for your support in pursuit ofthis most worthwhile of missions.

We hope you enjoy our 2016 Annual Report, and that you are as proud of what you’veaccomplished as we are thankful to you foryour support.

With the utmost gratitude, to offer an exampleforimmunization

A LETTER FROM OUR BOARDTo our valued partners and friends:

From humble beginnings in 2003 with a two-room school and 55 students, all of which wereHIV/AIDS orphans, we celebrated our 15thanniversary in 2016 with the smiling faces ofmore than 750 students. Our educationprogram has been a great success, as has thegrandmothers program, which serves over7,300 “grannies” throughout the districts ofKanungu and Rukungiri. Additionally, ourhealthcare and other community developmentprojects provide the glue that drives thetransformative nature of our holistic approachto community development, anchored by oureducation program. We could not haveachieved all this, and more, without yourunwavering support.

Now, as the organization begins another year,we recognize the long journey we still haveahead. Top priorities include building the finaltwo buildings on the NVSS campus anddeveloping a sustainability plan for the longterm future of our organization.

We have been developing our capacity to meetthese challenges. Our board has beenstrengthened in 2016 with new memberspossessing expertise in legal and humanresource matters; in the new year, 2017,additional members with expertise in financeand treasury matters have been brought onboard.

Similarly, the management team of theorganization has been strengthened with thehiring of a full-time Chief Financial Officer, aswell as other key staff members.

With your support, we will continue to buildthe capacity of the organization to provide andsustain services to HIV/AIDS orphans and theircommunities, to end systemic deprivation, poverty and hunger.

This is an important milestone for ourorganization, as we address one of the biggestchallenges facing the world. Thank you forjoining us in this mission, and for amplifying thecourage and hope that exist at the Nyaka AIDSOrphans Project.

Sincerely,

Frank Byamugisha andBarbara Kroberger

ABIA’S STORYHappiness, Happiness, Happiness!

Once hopeless, but now overjoyed with pleasure andblessings.

I could never have dreamt of being who I am today because ofthe worries that had surrounded me and my younger siblingsafter the passing away of both our parents. Daddy passed in2002 and left the whole family on mum, who followed himthree months later.

Even though I was only a young girl in primary school, I wasstill head of the household. I would run home from school toprepare a meal for my younger siblings, but we didn’t alwayshave food and would sometimes sleep on empty stomachs.

But then Nyaka Primary School began to have breakfast and lunch for us every day! Shirah andIsaac would always be fed. Besides food, we also drank good water and had medicine when wewere sick. Nyaka even paid for Isaac’s HIV medicine and made sure that he would always have it.

Nyaka became our parents. Their love and support were endless, and they treated us like theirown children. Life got better over the years, my siblings and I were healthy and in school. Igraduated from Secondary School in 2013 all because of Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project. I thenjoined an institution to become a certified teacher. I went from a nobody to a somebody, that iswhat I call from “grass to grace.”

Guess what! Now I’m a teacher at Kutamba Primary School teaching the nursery class. I started inthe beginning of 2016, and I can’t believe it. I sometimes pinch myself to wake up from sleep, butit is real and true. I am not dreaming but teaching. I have come full circle, teaching my felloworphans whom I love so much.

I am very much honored to be among the lucky orphans who have been helped by the Nyaka AIDSOrphans Project and the people with big hearts who are my heroes. I can’t express my fullappreciation through this, but my heart tells it all. Thank you for loving Nyaka AIDS OrphansProject and supporting it for our children’s sake.

I remain yours faithfully.

GRANDMOTHERS

A GRANDMOTHER’S STORYJoseline is an 81 year old grandmother raisingtwo grandchildren, Daniel and Kyomuhendo. They were living in a ragged tent made up ofjust a tarp and sticks. Her life was aboutsurvival and protecting her grandchildren, butshe had completely lost hope of providing morefor her family because she was too poor.

Joseline would surround her grandchildrenduring the night to provide warmth but worriedthat she could never provide enough protectionfrom a wild animal coming into the tent andkilling her and her grandchildren. She wasdesperate for help and YOU came to herrescue.

Nyaka built a home for Joseline that haschanged her life. She said, “I am forever inyour debt for helping me through this toughtime and I will always remember how youhelped me to get this wonderful opportunity.Thank you so much for all you have done forus.”

Your support not only gave Joseline a safe andsturdy home, but also restored her hope for abetter future. Mwebale munonga! (Thank youvery much!)

At the clinics, schools and even in community members' houses, Nyaka's nurses and volunteer doctors offer healthcare consultations, testing, immunizations, and medicine. Nyaka also conducts HIV testing for all incoming nursery students and their guardians.

Clean Water - Nyaka believes clean drinking water is a right, not a privilege. Water-borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, hepatitis A, and amebic dysentery can cause serious illness and even death. Built as a result of a partnership with Rotary International, involving clubs in Uganda and Michigan, among others, Nyaka's gravity-fed water systems and tap systems provide easier and safer access to clean water for the Nyaka and Kutamba communities.

IMPACT

The true impact of YOUR support is to turn vulnerable orphans with seemingly little hope into future world-changers like Hillary (pictured). A Nyaka Pioneer, he is currently in medical school and is already making an impact as a role model for Nyaka’snext generation of students. We –and all the future Hillarys made possible by your generosity – say thank you!

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

In 2013, Nyaka broke ground on a secondaryand vocational school campus, the use of whichwould reduce costs associated with Nyaka’sdesire to provide access to life-changingeducation to HIV/AIDS orphans while givingNyaka more control over the quality of theeducation it delivers.

2016 saw significant progress towardscompletion of the campaign, with the campus(pictured above) approximately 80% completeas of the end of December. Remaining buildingsand projects to be completed include thecompletion of the Dining Hall (also to be usedfor a multitude of other purposes),construction of the Physics and ChemistryLaboratories, and final touch-ups to the alreadycompleted structures.

Consistent with the approach Nyaka used whilebuilding its initial primary school, eachstructure in the campus enters service to thestudents immediately upon completion. Assuch, while the campus has yet to be finished,it is already being used to feed, educate andhouse 160 secondary and vocational students.

A separate report on the progress of the CapitalCampaign is available upon request, and yourinterest in learning about and supporting theproject would be most welcome.
