Dear Fellow Olympians, As the busiest month of the year (December) started, we were deluged with numerous activities. For most part of the first week of December, I was in KL with DG Lito Colona and other Best Presidents to attend the District Conference of D- 3300. My stay in KL was much lengthened due to Typhoon Ruby. Nevertheless, our activities did not stop nor got postponed simply because I was out of the country. Thank you, my fellow Olympians, for holding the fort. I specially thank IPP Ju for spearheading and personally representing us in all the activities featured in this issue. I know how hectic the schedule was as the activities were being held simultaneously. Yet, in all, IPP Ju was personally present and managed very wellas always. Thank you, too, PE Barbie for passing by RC Alabangs Christmas Bazaar where the Interact 4-way test and RCC Parol-making Contests were held. I am back. Thank God, for a safe trip back home. As Christmas draws nearer by the day, I urge everyone to help in our remaining activities for 2014. We have the Annual Gift Giving, our Christmas Party, the Rotaract, Interact and RCC Christmas party. With the exit of Typhoon Ruby, leaving hapless victims behind, I ask you to help in our year-round relief operations. Meantime, allow me to greet everyone the best of the Holiday Season. May we continue to spread love within our family, Rotary and the world. Merry Christmas! Makati is one of the premier

cities in the country. However, a greater percentage of its

residents are still marginalized. Rotary Club of Makati Olympia has endeavored especially the

resident of Barangay Olympia to improve their lives. That is why when the DILG Makati invited

the different sectors of the City to for a multi-sectoral group to devise and continue doing

poverty mitigation work at the grassroots, it readily responded to the call. IPP Ju Abdulcadir

together with Msgr Oliver Bugarin of partner Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

attended the seminar/ workshop for the said purpose.

Multisectoral Efforts for Poverty Alleviation Launched

Last December 7, IPP Ju met

with Kagawad Bobbit Lopez, a prospective RCMO Member, to brainstorm on the possible

project/s that will be funded by the program which RCMO and other sectors of the city will

implement. Poverty alleviation is one of the Millennium Development Goals

of the United Nations. Various programs have been done to mitigate poverty yet it remains

as one of the most pressing problems in the Philippines.

That being so, this multisectoral call spearheaded by DILG is a most welcome one. RCMO is

very happy to participate in it in the next 2 years.

Barangay Olympia celebrated its fiesta last December 8, the feast day of its patron saint, the Immaculate Concepcion of Mary.

Since Rotary Club of Makati Olympia is one of the recognized stakeholders in the said Barangay, it participated in the preparation and culmination

activities for the Fiesta Celebration 2014. The inclement weather brought about by Typhoon

Ruby did not deter the holding of the festivities from December 6 – 8.

Together with the sponsored Rotaract and

Interact Clubs and RCCs, IPP Ju Abdulcadir coordinated with Kagawad Bobbit Lopez, Head of

the Barangay Cultural Affairs Committee on RCMO’s participation.

To showcase the talents of the barangay folks, a

singing contest was held on December 6. RCMO sponsored the trophies and medals of the winners. IPP Ju served as one of the judges.

Winners were Sam Ortiz, first place; Frances Mariel Garbin, second place; Angel del Burcos,

third place.

Outdoor games and other fun activities were held for both children adults.

RCMO’s participation in the celebration of the Barangay Fiesta is one of its many activities for

its Happy Barangay Program. It also serves as a PR and public image project of the club.

Last December 6, 2014, Rotary Club of Alabang

held its annual Christmas Bazaar at Ayala Alabang Village. In connection with this event, several side activities like the Interact 4-Way

Test Drawing and Rotary Community Corps Parol-making contests were held.

IPP Ju Adbulcadir, who has actively mentored both the sponsored youth and RCCs, was one of the judges in the said competitions. With IPP Ju,

during theevent was PE Barbie Rivadeneira. Winners were the Interact Club and RCC Daang

Hari which are both sponsored by Rotary Club of Alabang Daang Hari led by Best President Tess Caraig. She is also its Charter President.

Celebrate Rotary's commitment to family in

December! Bring together mothers, fathers, children,

grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other members of your Rotary

family to learn more about the organization.

Consider having a special club event for family members to talk about

service opportunities in the community that they and

the club can address.

DECEMBER - ROTARY FAMILY MONTH

What RI Presidents say?

“By involving our family members, we make all of our endeavors more successful

and enjoyable. We also address the problem, often cited by younger members, that Rotary competes with family time. Once people realize that they do not have to decide between Rotary and family, they will be more likely to accept our

invitations to join. And just as important, once they do join, they are much more likely to become and remain educated, productive Rotarians.” -Jonathan Majiyagbe, RI President 2003-04

“It is important to integrate our own families into the family of Rotary. Rotary should be something that brings our families together – not a force that pulls them apart. Rotary clubs and districts can offer diverse service and social activities

that appeal to all members. This is critical if we want to attract younger members, who may have children as well as other demands on their time.” =Glenn E. Estess, Sr., RI President 2004-05

“But the family of Rotary can be more than a single family unit. It can represent many aspects of the organization. The RI Board is part of the family of Rotary International. So is each district as well as each club. Each Group Study Exchange

team is part of the family of Rotary. So are our Rotaractors and Interactors and our Youth Exchange students studying abroad. Our RI training leaders and all f

our committees and resource groups form various parts of the family of Rotary. Finally, The Rotary Foundation is a large and important part of our family of Rotary.” -Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar, RI President 2005-06

“Like our own family, we can count on the family of Rotary to help when help is needed and to share life’s joys and sorrows. Being part of Rotary means being partof the largest extended family in the world. Rotary is an organization of

people who care — about their homes, their communities, and each other. And caring is what family is all about.” =W.B.(Bill) Boyd, RI President 2006-07

“Our family of Rotary is strong because it’s close, and because it’s always forming

new ties. We need to ensure that Rotary keeps growing – in all the branches of our family. We should always be looking for and inviting qualified men and women to join our clubs.” =Wilfred (Wilf) Wlkinson, RI President 2007-08.

“December is family month. It is a time to focus on our families, to involve them in our Rotary service, and to challenge ourselves to do even more for those in need. Because there are so many families and so many children waiting for our help,

we, as Rotarians, cannot look away. We cannot and will not rest until all children, everywhere, have the chance for a long and healthy life.” -Dong Kurn (D.K.)

Lee, RI President 2008-09

“The idea of the family of Rotary is a simple one, and one that we celebrate every December during Family Month. Every Rotarian is part of the Rotary family – but

our family is much larger than just our 1.2 million members. The family of Rotary includes every one of the men, women, and children who are involved in our work: the spouses and children of our members, our Rotary Foundation program

participants and alumni, and all of those who are part of our programs, in the tens of thousands of Rotary communities around the world.” =John Kenny, RI President 2009-10

December is Family Month

“I feel incredibly strongly that Rotary should never, ever come between the Rotarian and the family. Rotary service should be something that brings the family closer together. The more that families are involved in Rotary, the more Rotary will thrive – today and tomorrow.” =Kaylan Banerjee, RI President 2011-12

Rotary General Secretary John Hewko and six RI staff members bicycled 104 miles in Tucson Arizona, USA, on Saturday, for the Miles to End Polio event, raising more than $6 million for polio eradication. The money raised by Rotary will receive a two-to-one match from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In addition to the team from Evanston, 100 Rotary member riders took part in the ride. The fundraising ride is part of the annual El Tour de Tucson bike event in Tucson, Arizona, USA. The race attracts more than 9,000 cyclists a year, making it one of the top cycling events in the U.S. The Rotary team from Evanston was joined by Rotary members from Arizona's District 5500, and other members from around the world. Hewko tweeted that he finished the race in 5 hours and 2 minutes. "Really enjoyed riding in El Tour de Tucson along with 100 Rotarians and members of the Rotary International staff," Hewko added. "As a group we were able to raise over $6 million for polio eradication which will help bring us even closer to the dream of a polio-free world. I am deeply moved by the generosity and passion of Rotarians around the world and Rotary staff."
