Here we are already with the 2nd issue of the Newsletter for 2018. February sees the kids settled back into school, Valentines day & Waitangi weekend. I had a fabulous break over Christmas and New Year with my family and friends. I saw many cruise ships arrive at the mount. I even got up at 5.30 am (yes AM)

Old age concerns to look for! Dr Brett Kirkland - BEACH ROAD VET CLINIC I sometimes hear people say that their pet is suffering from old age and so is not worth treating. Old age is not a dis-ease! Older pets are more likely to become ill sometimes with serious untreatable conditions and possibly with more than one. Some diseases are more likely in old age, but are considered very treatable. Many hyperthyroid cats live healthy lives for several years after diagnosis. Other condi-tions can be avoided by good health practises. Desexing A common problem that arises in older entire bitches is called pyometra, a condition where the uterus fills with pus. After a heat, female dogs secrete a large quantity of hor-mones whether they are mated or not. They virtually go through a false pregnancy each time, it's just that some are more obvious than others. When they are younger, they cope with this hormone load well but when they age say older than 6 or 7 say they are at risk of a pyometra forming. This is because the uterus is prone to infection at this time and can be invaded by bacteria. The bacteria have a nutri-ent rich environment and can thrive. I have removed uterus-es filled with 2 litres or more of pus! The bacteria release toxins into the bloodstream, which causes a pathological insult to the kidneys in particular. These patients are very often drinking a lot of water. Left untreated the uterus can burst and cause a fatal peritonitis. There are two forms -open and closed. If the cervix is open a discharge is present, the diagnosis is easy and there is less chance of fatal peritonitis. Closed pyometra is more

difficult to diagnose and is much more likely to burst at some stage with dire results. More than 60% of entire male dogs older than 7 years old have enlarged prostates. This is usually benign but can cause constipation issues and lead to more serious problems such as cysts, abscesses & cancer. They are also prone to testicular cancer & perianal cancer. It's a good idea to desex your pet at least by the age of 7-8 years old, you probably won’t be considering breeding at this age anyway. Dental care About 85% of cats and dogs that come in my clinic's door have poor dental health! They often have severe tartar encrustations, gum recession, cavities and a huge bacte-rial load. This is almost certainly painful and causes many other health problems like kidney or heart valve disease. Older pets with severe dental problems gain a new lease of life after their teeth have been fixed. Our pets are living longer these days and it is our responsibil-ity to provide good dental health practises to avoid pain-ful conditions such as gingivitis (inflamed gums), perio-dontitis (inflammation extending into the jaw bones) and tooth root abscesses. In the wild they eat whole carcass-es including raw bones, if we feed only soft processed foods then we are causing the problem. Old skinny ravenous cats A common problem we deal with is an older cat (more than ten years old) who has lost weight over the preced-ing months and now appears quite ill for a week or so. Typically, they appear restless and a bit cranky. Until they became ill they used to have a voracious appetite for several months or more but in spite of that they never put weight on and in fact became skinny. The condition is hyperthyroidism; an over production of thyroid hormone due to the presence of benign nodules in the thyroid gland. Excessive thyroid hormone increases the metabol-ic rate, so these patients are active and eating more but are using up more calories than they can eat. Hyperthy-roidism in cats is usually successfully treatable with med-ication, surgery or radioactive iodine.

The market is currently a hotbed of so many incredible offers for travel in 2018. From short haul destinations such as Australia & the islands of the South Pacific to the beaches of Asia & Ha-waii. Airlines have been releasing outstanding value airfares to the UK and Europe seeing people de-ciding to travel to these destina-tions for the first time for half the price of what it has been in previ-ous years. With competition of new airlines into market the air-lines have been competing to win capacity out of New Zealand to all the key holidays destina-tions. When this happens the great news for the traveller is pric-ing is competitive and we have a number of choices of holiday des-tinations to choose from. Cruising continues to grow in pop-ularity and with so many options in the market it may be hard to
know which one is the right choice for you. Not all cruise lines are created equal, they vary in size, style, standard and age. Some ships within a range can be brand new and luxuri-ous whilst others are in need of a refurbishment. Our team are kept up to date with all new developments with the cruise lines and the team can answer all your questions and guide you to making the right deci-sion for you. With cruising you can travel the world to places best seen by sea and do this all while having to only un-pack once. The Team at House of Travel Papamoa have in-depth knowledge and expertise on cruising and can assist in creat-ing the perfect cruising experi-ence for your next adventure.
Our buying power, our knowledge, and our market understanding means that when you book with us you will get the best price and you will never pay more than if you were to buy online direct from the cruise line. What you benefit from is our un-biased & specialty advice and expertise. Our team of 13 travel specialists at House of Travel Papamoa are well travelled and have collectively experienced more than 100 countries. It is not unusual for two or three members of our team to be involved in cre-ating an itinerary for our customers as we draw on all our experiences to ensure we have built the best holiday for you. You will find us at the Corner of Domain Road & To-paz Drive, with plenty of parking on our doorstep. With the New Year comes new opportuni es, resolu ons and goals for the 12 months ahead – and if your goal is to live stronger for longer, Sport Bay of Plenty’s Keep on your Feet group strength and balance classes might be what you need!
The Keep on your Feet project is about crea ng access to approved community group strength and balance classes across Western and Eastern Bay of Plenty, as part of a na on‐wide drive to reduce falls and fractures, and support older people to ‘live stronger for longer’.
Project Leader Jen Riley says the classes, which are co‐ordinated by Sport Bay of Plenty, involve simple but effec ve exercises that improve leg strength and challenge par cipants balance in a fun and safe environment.
“Falling over and losing your strength and balance shouldn’t be considered a natural part of ageing and many falls are preventable

HAPPY NEW YEAR! The end of year December 2017 ended with a big rally with some 72 sales and that is just for 3 weeks of business prior to the Xmas holiday break. If one were to extrapolate this number over the standard four weeks, the tally would be 96 sales, the highest monthly figure for all of 2017!
The 600s dominated with 23 sales followed by the 700k‐900k range with 22 and $901k‐$1m+ with 9. Good numbers.
As a result, Papamoa lis ngs have dropped by 30 over the previous month with houses to 193, the 3rd lowest number in the last 12 months.
The ac vity is certainly here in Pa‐pamoa and as one can see demand is VERY good for well priced and presented proper es. Changes are certainly with us now. It is taking longer to sell some proper es and seemingly more ‘issues’ are being iden fied than in the frenzied days! If you would like a copy of all these results, contact me now by email or text.
If your plans are to make a move out, up or down‐price this year, let me provide you with an idea as to where your property may sit in todays market.

Ageing Gracefully..... Ageing Beau fully!
It’s a great me of year to restore and re-pair the effects of the environment and ageing have on our facial skin, says Sharon Melrose from Rejuvena on Cosme c Medi-cine, Suite 7 Promed House, Tauranga.
A small change such as turning up the cor-ners of a sad looking down turned mouth or smoothing a furrowed, grumpy looking frown can do wonders for your appearance and self confidence.
“The rela vely low cost, safeness and con-venience of treatments such as dermal fillers and facial muscle relaxants, has re-sulted in an ever-increasing number of cli-ents who look and feel more refreshed and confident. “My clients are most o en be-tween 35-65 years old, who are reluctant to accept, not so much the inevitability, but the speed with which their face changes with age.”
Although it's a privilege to age, changes in our facial appearance associated with age will compromise us of our familiar, unique iden ty and categorize us as looking
