The Paralegal Press Delivering E-News You Can Use (Newsletter of the Paralegal Section) Quarterly, July 2010 Volume 1, Issue 1 President’s Message By Carla Dennis, Paralegal, Jones Day Welcome to the first edition of The Paralegal Press, the quarterly e-newsletter of the J. L. Turner Legal Association - Paralegal Section. I am so excited to be launching our first e- newsletter to keep you informed of what’s going on in the Paralegal Section. This newsletter is designed to give you a closer look at the meetings and members, activities, and upcoming events sponsored by the Paralegal Section. We will bring you interesting and informative articles written by our members and other interested parties, about the paralegal profession, various legal issues and the legal field in general. When I started my term as the 2010 Paralegal Section President this year, I set several personal goals that I would like to see the Paralegal Section accomplish this year, which I shared with the members in my first President’s Message in early March. My number one goal is to empower the members so that we can work together to bring about positive changes in the association. I can see and feel the positive changes that are already taking place this year, which makes me very happy and excited about what the future holds for the Paralegal Section. There has been overwhelming support from the membership this year through attendance at the meetings, participation in the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program (“DVAP”) legal aid clinics and the increase in our membership. My hope for the Paralegal Section is that we will continue to grow in number and expand our membership base, become more visible in the legal community through our involvement in various activities, interact more with other paralegal associations such as NALA and DAPA, and plan events that will keep you motivated and get you more involved in working towards making this another successful year. Welcome to the first edition of The Paralegal Press, the quarterly e-newsletter of the J. L. Turner Legal Association - Paralegal Section. I am so excited to be launching our first e-newsletter to keep you informed of what’s going on in the Paralegal Section. President’s Message Continued

Congratulations and best wishes for a successful

future to

Tannell Davis Lesley Coffey

for completing the paralegal program at

El Centro College.

We have been really busy this year, starting with our first meeting. JLTLA President, Karen McCloud, was our first speaker of the year. In February, Frederick Lewis, arbitrator and mediator, spoke to us about the mediation and arbitration process. At the March meeting, our 2010 Vice President Tangela Jackson and Lamont Aldridge, licensed process servers in the State of Texas, gave presentations regarding process serving in Texas. The month of April was a busy month, beginning with our monthly meeting where John Warren, Dallas County Clerk, and Gary Fitzsimmons, Dallas County District Clerk, gave a presentation to the members on E-Fling in Dallas County. Immediately following the April meeting, members of the Paralegal Section traveled to El Centro College to participate in their Paralegal Fair. On April 20th, we

participated in a Law Day event at the Belo with DAPA. On the social front, several members participated in a Nite Out with Poetry and Jazz at the Black Academy of Arts & Letters, and we held our first happy hour of the year at the Catalina Room. As you can see, we have a lot of fun, exciting and informative continuing legal education programs and other events planned for this year. The Paralegal Section Officers and I are constantly looking for new ways to improve the section and are making changes that we feel will benefit the membership the most. We hope that as many members as possible will take more of an active role and get involved in helping us accomplish the goals we have set for the Section this year. We would appreciate you sending us any

ideas or comments as to what you think we can do to get you more involved and increasing our membership. Your opinion is very important to us, and the Section will only be successful if we are all dedicated, committed and work together to bring about the positive changes I know we all, as African-American paralegals, want to see for the association. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected], or any of the officers, if there is something you would like to discuss or see happen within the Paralegal Section. I hope to see you at the next meeting!

John Warren and Gary Fitzsimmons’ E-Filing Presentation: The 21st Century is Here! The Clerk’s Digital Courts Project

Article written by Toya Walker, Litigation Paralegal (Allen Stewart, P.C.)

On Saturday, April 10, 2010, John Warren, Dallas County Clerk and Gary Fitzsimmons, Dallas County District Clerk were the featured speakers at the monthly meeting. Mr. Warren and Mr. Fitzsimmons delivered an outstanding PowerPoint presentation entitled: The 21st Century is Here! The Clerk’s Digital Courts Project. John and Gary are no strangers to the Dallas County legal community. Since taking office in 2007, both John and Gary have worked diligently to move the courts records management system into the 21st Century. Their presentation gave an accurate depiction of how court documents/records were stored in the past, how they are kept currently, and the vision for efficient records management and retrieval in the future. The digital courts project will put Dallas County on the leading edge of technological innovation. Here are a few of the pros to the new Digital Courts Project listed below:

• On Base fully replaces the old paper file in an efficient, easy to manage digital format

• Will provide attorneys remote access to the electronic case

record from their offices. Pilot testing is currently underway and full implementation in May 2010

LEGAL CLINICS ARE A GREAT WAY TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

6 THE PARALEGAL PRESS

• WiFi access in the courtroom will be developed to

allow the Bar to access court records digitally without bringing paper files to the courthouse.

• Provides the public and media with fast access to court records. Access to paper records greater than 45 minutes; and

• to electronic records, less than 5 minutes.

What to Expect

• The clerks will image all incoming documents to their court and attach to the

electronic case file.

• OnBase document management system will integrate with the Sheriff’s AIS system for seamless digital process.

How will this benefit you?

• No more waiting around while the clerk tries to find your file

• No more waiting around in the Records department when you need conformed copies.

• No more missing or misplaced documents and delays

• Remote off-site access of case records will allow attorneys to research cases from their offices.

The cons to the new digital courts system is that the system is still underway but with the help of attorneys, paralegals, and the public who utilize the courts every day, the new digital era will be here to stay!

It may also be used to discuss legal news and learning new information. My goal is to implement a weekly discussion where all members can participate. The discussion will stay up four days. If you already have a personal FB account, then you may search under JL Turner Paralegal Association to become a fan. If you do not have a personal FB account, stay tuned to our September newsletter edition. I will have a feature story on the use of FB in the legal profession, how to use if professionally and as a resource tool.
