Joe Mallia Have you ever tried to walk around your house in the dark? Even if you think you know where everything is, there is always a level of uncertainty. You reach out your hand in an attempt to find the door openings. You are unsure if you are going to trip over something, everything feels further away and you are never at peace. How different it is when you turn on the lights. Your experience is completely different. You see where you are going, you know what is in front of you, distances are not so great and you are not nervous. In today’s Scripture we hear how in Christ, we have “seen a great light.” It is in his light that we are able to walk without fear and in full confidence, no matter what lies before us because we can see it clearly and we know how to navigate it. When we have God in our lives, we see clearly and are able to live in confidence and peace, but for the person who relies on moving through life on their own, they walk in the uncertainty of darkness. So, fear not and walk in the great light of Christ and stay clear of the darkness of sin. Have a great week. What does the future hold? In the old Doris Day song where she asks her mother what the future will be, the mother’s response is “Que sera, sera” or “what will be will be.” I think many people take that attitude;, it seems very carefree and cavalier, but it is also not very helpful. Though things are bound to happen, there are things we can do to plan and direct the future rather than just be a casualty of the circumstances. The purpose of our Missionary Strategic Planning Process is to be pro-active about the future of the Catholic Church in our area. There are things we can do and things we should do, but those things will require change and difficult decisions. The reality of what the future seems to be indicating is that the way we have run our parishes, how they operate, what we can expect has nothing to do with anything that we have become accustomed to during our lifetimes. I know I have spoken to some of these details before, but I am not sure that we have grasped them fully until we are faced with them soon, as I know we will be. For example, this year we will ordain five men to the priesthood. Compared to recent years, five is a great number. The problem is that we are expecting at least 8 pastors to retire in June of this year. We also have over 20 pastors serving beyond the age of 70, many in their 80’s. The numbers also indicate that we could see the retirement of up to 90 priests in the next 8 years! Even if 20 men entered the seminary this year, it would take 8 years for them to get ordained and we would still be down a significant number of priests than we presently have. We face a very real possibility that come July this year, we will be down to one priest here at our two parishes. What does that mean for our future? You hear people talk about “parish boundaries.” What that means, is that every diocese breaks up its territory into sections that are called parishes and entrust the care of all souls to a pastor. Those boundaries apply only to the pastor, not to people, as you can go to mass at any church, but the pastor is responsible for the care of every person, even if they are not Catholic, in that area. Do you know how big our parishes are? The boundaries for St. Augustine are: to the north, Weber at Deland east to Belle River and south to Big Hand and Big Hand east to Palms Rd. To the east: from Palms Road south to 94, 94 to Hessen and Hessen south to Meisner. To the south: Meisner/28 Mile Rd to 94 southwest to Frost, Frost to 28 mile, 28 to Lowe Plank extended to 29 Mile Rd, 29 Mile west to Bates, Bates north to 30 Mile and 30 Mile to Omo. Finally, to the west: Omo north to 33 mile, 33 mile to Pitt, Pitt road north to Armada Ridge, then south to 34 Mile Rd. 34 Mile Rd east to Russ, Russ north to School Section and School Section to Deland, before you go north to Weber. That is around 72 sq. miles. The boundaries for Holy Family are: north, Masters Rd at Braidwood Rd east to Wales Ridge Rd extended, Wales Ridge extended south to Lambs Rd, Lambs Rd east to Emerson, Emerson northeast to Card, Card Rd. east to Richman Rd and Richman south to Dove and Dove Rd. east to S. MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia

Have you ever tried to walk around your house in the dark?

The numbers

also indicate that we could see the retirement of up to 90 priests in the next 8 years!

Finally, to the west: Omo north to 33 mile, 33 mile to Pitt, Pitt road north to Armada Ridge, then south to 34 Mile Rd. 34 Mile Rd east to Russ, Russ north to School Section and School Section to Deland, before you go north to Weber. no one is required to only attend mass in the area in which they live, you are free to attend any Catholic parish that is in union with Rome, but it gives you an idea of the size and diversity of area we are dealing with in planning for the future and how do we keep the faith alive and vibrant in our community of nearly 150 sq. miles. To put that in perspective, the entire country of Malta is only 120 sq. miles!

That is why your prayers for our parish leadership is so important at this time. Further, prayers for the Holy Spirit to guide each member of our parishes is also necessary. What will happen, we do not know, but if we are not willing to direct the course of events, we will in the end be subject to it. I am of the mind that instead of sitting back and saying, “Que sera, sera”, I prefer to grab the wheel and direct the ship being led by the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. God bless you all.

“TO KNOW THE LOVE OF CHRIST WHICH SURPASSES

KNOWLEDGE, THAT YOU MAY BE FILLED WITH ALL THE FULLNESS OF GOD.” Ephesians 3:19

I share this scripture verse with you today as an invitation. An invitation to a closer walk with the Lord through a Cursillo weekend. The reality of this scripture touched my heart when I made my Cursillo many

years ago. For the first time in my life, I truly understood the depth of Gods love for me. Since then, I have always been led to share this gift and who better to share it with than the people that I worship with, the parishioners of St. Augustine and Holy Family. Cursillo is described as a short course in Christianity, an encounter with Christ. It has been celebrated by thousands of people around the world and has been active in the Archdiocese of Detroit since 1962. Cursillo calls us to a better understanding of God’s love for us, and gives us the tools to “Unleash the Gospel “ and be witnesses of the Risen Christ. I welcome the opportunity to share this life changing experience with you and answer any questions you may have, feel free to call me at 586-709-7254. For more information check out our website at (cursillodetroit.com). I have also put together some material about Cursillo which is on the racks in both parishes. The following are the dates for the upcoming weekends: Women’s: February 13-16, St. Mary’s Retreat House in Oxford Men’s: April 16-19, Columbiere Retreat House in Clarkston God be with you, Joyce Toia

RECLAIMING THE LORD’S DAY!!! In the early Church, the fish was a secret symbol of Christianity. Look around the church and vestibule to see if you can find any fish in the art, décor, windows, or books. Did you know that in 2019, Pope Francis declared the Third Sunday of Ordinary

Time as Sunday of the Word of God. This day reminds us to regularly read the Bible and shows us the connection to the sacraments. Do you have a favorite Bible verse? As a family, collect one another’s bible verses and put them all together in a frame and place it in a prominent place in the house. Share your favorite Bible verse with us on the St. Augustine / Holy Family FaceBook. Did anyone find any fish in either of the churches? If so, share that too!!!

Monday Bible Study with Fr. Joe meets at Holy Family. The next study will be on February 3, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. in the Life Center. If you have not attended in the past, that is okay, you can start where we are. Please bring your bible and a note pad.

Walking with Purpose, a bible study for women, offers opportunity for a closer relationship with Jesus and a community of women. This group meets weekly on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in the PARISH HALL at St. Augustine. If you have any questions, please contact the parish office.

BRIGHT SMILES IN THIRD GRADE

On January 16th the third graders traveled to Dr. Brieden’s office in New Baltimore where they learned a lot about dental health. Each year Dr. Brieden invites third graders from the area to his office to prepare for National Dental Health Month which begins in February. While in small groups, they learned about the function and care of their teeth, gums, and mouth. They were also introduced to how x-rays and impressions of teeth are taken and the new machine that can scan all your teeth. They even learned a little bit about what braces do and how they work. It’s not the same as it used to be!

At the end of the program they were told about the tooth brushing contest. Each student is to brush their teeth at least twice a week for four weeks and record it on their Tooth Brushing Chart. When the form is complete, a parent must sign the bottom and return the chart to school. If there is 100% participation our class will receive a pizza party from Dr. Brieden. In addition, 3 lucky students will win a prize including, a Sonic electric tooth brush, a TY Beanie Boo, or Dr. Brieden hoodie. Each student was also given a goody bag containing a new tooth brush, a tube of tooth paste, dental floss, a pencil, an eraser and a coloring book.

Through this field trip, goody bag, and contest we hope to encourage good dental hygiene habits and have bright smiles from all the third graders.
