Mr Piyush Goyal; Hon’ble Minister of Railways and Coal; Government of India, Mr Ashok Pratap Singh; President; Board of Trustees; Modern Schools, Mr Vijay Chadda; Chairman; Managing Committee; Modern School Barakhamba Road, Members of the Board of Trustees, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.

It is a joy and a privilege to welcome you all to the 97th Founder’s Day of the school. It is the time of the year when we gather to salute the visionary zeal of Lala Raghubir Singh who as a young 26 year old laid foundation of his dream, a dream of an institution that would be a perfect synchronization of modern education and Indian ethos. And, thus, was born the Modern School. Tonight is also the night to celebrate and raise toast to all the wonderful achievements of the school and our students in the year gone by.

But before that, let me introduce you to the Chief Guest for this Founder’s Day. An eminent & distinguished personality like our Chief Guest hardly requires any introduction, but I would like to do the honours.

Mr. Piyush Goyal is the Minister of Railways & Minister of Coal in the Government of India. He is currently a Member of the Rajya Sabha and was earlier the National Treasurer of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He headed the BJP’s Information Communication Campaign Committee and oversaw the publicity and advertising campaign of the party including the social media outreach for the Indian General Elections 2014.

He has had a brilliant academic record of All-India Second rank holder Chartered Accountant and Second rank holder in Law in Mumbai University. Before his foray in to the world of politics, Mr Goyal was a well-known investment banker and advised top corporates on management strategy and growth. He has also served on the Board of India’s largest commercial bank, the State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda.

Mr Goyal has participated in Leadership Programmess at Yale University, Oxford University and Princeton University and is currently pursuing the Owner/President Management Programme at Harvard Business School.

During his 33 year long political career, he has held several important positions at different levels in the BJP and is in the National Executive of the Party. He had the privilege of being mentored by stalwarts such as Shri

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India. He was also nominated by the Government of India to the prestigious Task Force for Interlinking of Rivers in 2002.

His father Late Vedprakash Goyal was the Union Minister of Shipping and the National Treasurer of the BJP for over two decades. His mother Chandrakanta Goyal was elected thrice to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Mumbai. He is married to Seema, an active social worker and has two children – Dhruv, working in New York, and Radhika, studying at Harvard University, USA.

Sir, we are indeed honoured to have you amongst us this evening. On behalf of the entire Modern School fraternity, we once again welcome you Sir!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Modern School Barakhamba Road has been able to grow remarkably, in leaps and bounds under the able stewardship of Mr Ashok Pratap Singh, President, Board of Trustees, Modern Schools. He continues with the aspiration of Lala Raghubir Singh and provides us with his unstinted support in our mission to provide holistic education to the generations of tomorrow. His faith in us, along with the guidance of Mr Vijay Chadda and other Members of the Board of Trustees, motivates us to continue to strive harder and better ourselves, to achieve greater heights in all spheres. Let me reiterate, that for us, at Modern, the sky is not the limit.

1. INITIATIVES

Experiential Learning is the best way to impart education leading to better learning. SRJNA one of the very few tinkering pioneers in India, is working with our teachers to bring innovations in curriculum based learning in Science and Mathematics. The professionals from IITs and XLRI are here now to aid students achieve diverse experience using the SRJNA models. Through SRJNA, experiential learning is promoted among the students, thereby reaffirming and revamping the academic flavour and weaving it in the warp and weft of the school’s ethos, a new academic vigour has been initiated. Not only this, we have a dedicated team of teachers who go out of way and beyond school hours to help students excel in academics. Extra revision, remedial classes, classes for low performers and up-to-speed classes for new admissions to bring them to par are taken by the teachers.

Sports:

a) Tennis – Our school has almost finished construction of 6 international standard tennis courts. The school plans to have national and international tournaments conducted here from next year. Professionals like the young former Davis Cupper Vivek Shokeen have been hired to coach our students during school hours as well as after school to bring them up to national and international standards.

b) Taekwondo – Taekwondo classes have commenced on an experimental basis for Classes 6, 7 and 8. Registration was held last month and we have received an overwhelming response. From next year, more than 350 children will be trained in this technique of self-defence as part of the school curriculum.

c) Other Sports –Initiatives are being taken to hire and induct professionals to boost the standard of sports in the school.

Security:

The school continues to keep pace to provide the best security to the

students on the campus and some steps have been taken to upgrade the process:

y Increase in the number of CCTV Cameras

y Police Verification of the staff

y Issue of Identity Cards to Parents, Guardians and Attendants of all Students.

y Increased safety and security on all buses

y Introduction of hand held metal detectors at entry points

The school seeks to keep pace with the security measures to keep our children safe on the campus as they are the school’s life line.

Other Initiatives

To assess the psychological status/growth, creative and linguistic skills of students, Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) has been introduced in the Middle School from the current academic year.

Class Observation & Academic Audit for Classes S5 & S7 has been introduced from the Academic Session 2017-2018. A schedule is in place to check the quantum of work done, quality of correction through the year, quality of assessment of answer scripts after the tests/examinations, to help us ascertain inadequacies and plan better for the next year.

Obtaining feedback from students of Class S7, before the Board examination, is already in practice for past many years. From the Academic Year 2017-2018, we intend similar exercise for the students of Class S5.

Initiatives were also taken to improve the infrastructure of the school and the tasks completed recently are (i) Renovation of washrooms of Sir Sobha Singh Block (ii) Building of seven Rain Harvesting Pits to conserve rain water (iii) One grass court for Lawn Tennis (iv) 326

‘Round Square’ is a worldwide network of 180 innovative schools like Lawrence School, Sanawar, Mayo College, Ajmer, Daly College, Indore, Scindia and the Doon School as its member in 50 countries across six continents. Round Square schools are characterized by a share belief in holistic approach to learning through six ideals – Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service, drawn from the theories of education philosopher Kurt Hahn. Recently, our school applied to be a member-school of the Round Square Network. On 30th August 2017, Ms Rajbir Sandhu, Regional Support Manager of South Asia & Gulf Region of Round Square; Mr Sumer Singh, former Principal, Daly College, Indore; and Dr Sarvesh Naidu, Director, Executive Director, Pathways World School, Aravali, visited our school and interacted with the members of the Round Square Students’ Council. On 31st August 2017, these officials attended the assembly and saw a presentation on ‘Life@Modern’. Later, they were taken for a school tour and shown another presentation featuring how the tenets of Round Square i.e. internationalism, democracy, environmentalism, leadership and community service are practised by our school. The students have already attended the Round Square Conference as an ‘Observer School’ held at Cape Town, South Africa during September/October 2017. Our school’s membership to the Round Square has been recommended and we await the confirmation to this effect.
