The Prospectus
Hi Parents
I hope you all enjoyed the wonderful weather we had over the break and that
you were able to get some rest and relaxation with your family.
We have an exciting term coming up with the Into the Woods performance,
Market Day, Sporting Schools and our Canberra excursion. Remember to like
and share our Facebook page and posts. The more information we can get out
to the community promoting our school and the events the better. Good luck
to our Port Curtis athletes competing next Friday. We know you will give it
your best and show great sportsmanship.
You may have heard through your children or seen through our Facebook page
that Leanne Cowell and Dell Tappin visited our school to engage all students
in music last week. Feedback was that it was the best music lesson ever!! We
look forward to them continuing this through our Arts program this term.
Paperwork is a requirement with our extra-curricular activities and it is im-
portant that these are returned promptly. Our administration team isn’t able
to continually chase up paperwork anymore due to the increase in daily tasks
that need to be performed. To compensate, we will endeavour to keep paper-
work to a minimum, ensuring this is all attached to the newsletter once per
week. We will only send paperwork home on other days in extenuating cir-
cumstances. Your assistance with this is appreciated. Your assistance in read-
ing the newsletter and returning paperwork promptly is appreciated.
NOTIFICATION OF STUDENT ABSENCES As you would be aware, students are required to have an acceptable reason for
all absences from school. This reason needs to be communicated to the school
for effective roll marking procedures to occur. This notification needs to come
from a parent/guardian, NOT a sibling. As of Monday 11 July, the school is
required to notify families of unexplained absences on the day of their ab-
sence. This means, that if you child is away from school and we haven’t heard
from you, you will either receive a text or a phone call seeking an explanation.
If we receive notification, no further action will be taken. Your assistance in
notifying us of your child’s absence early in the day is appreciated.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING
On Monday 18 July, we have Kerri Hancock, the regional coach for Positive
Behaviour for learning, visiting our school. She will provide a PD for all staff,
which will start our process of becoming a Positive Behaviour for Learning
school. This will tie in nicely with our Responsible Behaviour Plan and Bounce
Back work. All staff will be off class to participate in the PD, but we will still be
at school if required. Watch this space for more information on this!

INTO THE WOODS
PERFORMANCE
Students will travel by bus next Thursday
21 July to see the Biloela High School’s
matinee performance of Into the Woods.
We will travel by bus at 9:15am and should
return by 12pm. The school is covering the
cost of this excursion. Thank you for being
prompt with your permission notes. As this
falls in our PE time, we have negotiated
with Mrs Beckman to reschedule our PE
time. For next week only, PE will take place
on Friday 22 July at the usual time. We
ask that students please wear full school
uniform on the Thursday for the perfor-
mance, and the sport uniforms to be worn
Friday instead.

Quite a few important notices for the term:

- just for week 2, reader folders will be handed out on Monday and need to be returned Wednesday (there will be fewer books)
- the preps have decided to make a pirate ship this term. We will need quite a bit of cardboard to make this, as well as other items for play. Can you please drop these off at school ASAP?
- Year 1 students NEED a shoe box for their science assessment
- Year 2 students NEED a piece of cardboard for their science assessment (poster)
Thank you in advance!
Another exciting term ahead!
P-2 News
IMPORTANT INFORMATION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY A couple of policy updates have come through which impacts on both medication administered
by the school and notification of student absences.
OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATIONS (taken directly from the policy). This policy is avail-able for your perusal at the school if you would like more information.
The Department recognises that all medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) medica-tions, e.g. paracetamol or alternative medicines, may be drugs or poisons and may cause side
effects. As such, schools are required to receive medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, but not a pharmacist) to administer any
medication to students, including those bought over-the-counter. Whilst parents may administer OTC medications to their child without medical authorisation, they are aware of the child’s complete medical history, and are able to provide ongoing, direct
supervision for the course of the child’s illness. Due to these circumstances, a parent is also more likely to recognise if their child is having adverse effects and requires immediate medical
attention. The student’s prescribing health practitioner also has the knowledge of the child’s medical his-tory to determine the appropriate OTC medication to administer and is therefore able to deter-
mine dosage and provide advice regarding potential side effects or interactions with other medications.
For these reasons, OTC medications will only be administered to students at school if medical authorisation has been received.
In summary, all medication including Panadol must be prescribed by a doctor, NOT a pharmacist. Students travelling to Canberra who will be bringing paracetamol will need to see a doctor and get a medical authorisation (there are plenty of bulk billing doctors for chil-dren). Also, as the students travelling to Canberra are older, and I have to strategically pack a
suitcase for a week in Canberra, I will be unable to take bottles of Panadol or Nurofen. Students need to ensure they have tablets only. Chewable tablets are available if you prefer.

Request for smaller relish
and IXL/Cottee’s jam jars
A family has requested donations of the
above jars for relish to sell on the day.
If you have any of these jars at home, could you please bring them in to
school?
Is it really Persuasive Speech time already?? We have
started our next unit and looking at a variety of persua-
sive techniques ready for students to create their own
speeches. We will be looking at the Great Barrier Reef
as a topic to study, but for their speeches, students can
choose a topic of choice. I have encouraged students to
read the newspaper looking for how sentences are start-
ed and how words are chosen to influence the readers
point of view.
Ms Gray has started working on a maths investigation
with her 3-4 Maths class. Students are able to take this
home to work on if they require but it must come back
to school each day.
Please make sure you have read the medication infor-
mation relating to camp and you sign and return the
Maths Competition private transport form ASAP.
3-6 News
MATHS COMPETITION
Every year, we are invited by the Biloela State High School to compete in the Maths competition. This
year we have 9 students from years 3-6 competing. The competition will take place on Thursday 28 July
at 9am. Parents will need to drop their students off at the high school office at 8:45am and they will be walked over to the library ready for a 9am start. Mrs
Neve and I will be there to pick them up following the competition. Students will return to school by
10:45am. Those students who are attending have a reminder note and a private transport note attached
to the newsletter. Please return the private transport note ASAP as I cannot transport any students with-
out your permission. If you are unable to drop your child off at the high school at 8:45am, and cannot make alternate arrangements, please contact the
office.
MARKET DAY
Attached to this newsletter is the list of stalls and help-
ers. We did try to give everyone their choice of stall and
job but this proved difficult in some instances. We are
hoping to have as many people here by 7am on the day
to assist with set up as there isn’t too much that can be
set up prior to the event.
Please contact us ASAP if you are unable to fulfil your
requirement and need a change.
We require a lot of goodies for our goodie jars. Thank
you to those families who have started bringing things
in. We have two Free Dress days coming up to help with
this. The first one is Tuesday 19 July and the second
one is Monday 25 July. Sun smart free dress can be
worn on these days for some items to fill jars. We do
have plenty of jars so don’t stress about bringing your
goodies in jars.
School Opinion Surveys
Attached to the newsletter is a link for your 2016 School Opinion Survey contribution. This survey is undertaken by staff, students and our older students to gauge what we are doing well and what we could improve on. The survey is completely anonymous and is used to inform future planning processes.
The survey will remain open until Friday 29 July, but if you could complete it earlier so it isn’t forgotten about, it would be appreciated. The more responses we receive, the more data we have to work with. If you are unable to access a computer or an internet connection, we have computers for you to use in the library at a time convenient to you.
