The Holiday Luncheon brought out the best in our Purdue Women’s Club Mem-bers! On Friday, December 8th at the Lafa-yette Golf and Country Club. PWC’s own Kathy McGraw with PWC's popular pianist, Jeff Goodspeed, and Eric Rody, Civic Theatre percussionist, entertained us as everyone joined in for a costumed sing along; think The Snowflake Fairy, Marching Nutcrackers, Strolling Carolers and Elf and Reindeer San-ta’s Helpers as well as Santa Himself … played by Kathy’s kind husband, John.

PWC Knitting Friends and PWC New-comers modeled 15 handmade unique and vibrant scarves made at a recent combined meeting of Knitting Friends and Newcomers. The scarves all sold and the proceeds went to Span Plan.

The Lafayette Country Club tables were-beautifully set and the food was delicious. The staff did such a good job of providing the many menu options needed for dietary requirements.

After the meal and a grand sing along the last hurrah was a fast-paced, exciting gift exchange. Santa’s Helpers dashed around all the tables distributing the wrapped treasures placed in big bags in the entryway by each attendee as they arrived. Kathy then read a Christmas story that required everyone to make quick gift passes around the table to the left or right depending on the wording of the story. After several hilarious minutes eve-ryone ended up with a surprise gift to take home. A perfect ending! Thanks to Kathy for all her time and energy

IN MEMORIAM

Purdue Women’s Club Member Rosemary Greenkorn passed away on September 29, 2017. Born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, she graduated from Oshkosh High School and later from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with her B. A. in English. She married Robert Greenkorn in1952 and they lived in Madison, Wisconsin until Robert graduated from university. They then took time to travel through Europe and lived in Norway for a year. Returning to the United States they took up residence in Tulsa, Oklahoma where Robert worked in oil research for five years. Moving back to Milwaukee, Robert began teaching at Marquette before coming to Pur-due and West Lafayette in 1965. In recent years that have spent six months of each year in Santa Rosa, Florida.

In addition to becoming a PWC member and serving on its board, Rosemary was a diligent volunteer at the West Lafayette Public Library and served on it’s board. Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette and St. Rita’s in Santa Rosa were both blessed with her mem-bership and involvement in the parish. Rosemary’s favorite pastimes were gardening, reading, playing bridge and knitting.

Knitting Friends and Newcomers Work Together for Span Plan on October 18

It was a busy afternoon at the Klondike Branch of the Tippe-canoe Country Library on Wednesday, October 18 when the PWC Knitting Friends Interest Group hosted a joint meeting with a group of Newcomers for a grand total of 25 ladies.

Rather than simply joining in a circle to knit, compare and discuss projects or learn a new technique and chat which is usual at regular meetings, each person spent time carefully choosing 20 to 30 coordinating 90” strands for a yarn strand scarf. Kristin Wei-denaar brought the technique to the group from a scarf found in New Mexico at an art fair.

Many Knitting Friends members came early and brought beautiful and unique yarns, helped cut them and then carefully-spread them across the selection tables for people to pick up. There were ribbon yarns, fluffy yarns, yarns that looked like mini feather boas and many different sizes, weights and colors of more usual kinds used. Also welcomed were the remains of yarns from other projects. As long as it was possible to cut a 90” piece of yarn all pieces were welcomed.

It sounds like a simple process and technically speaking it was. However keeping 20 to 30 of the 90” pieces of yarn under control and making the selection interesting and colorful proved to be challenging- especially if someone decided that one or two of the yarns needed to be exchanged for others. There was a decided amount of de-tangling going on!

Once the yarn selection was done there were a number of different knotting techniques one could use to make the finished product and then the scarves could be taken home or contributed to the sale at The PWC Holiday Luncheon. Fifteen scarves went up for sale at the luncheon, were modeled by Knitting Friends mem-bers at the luncheon and sold very quickly! The proceeds of the sale are being sent to Span Plan.

Muna Oto, 2017 Purdue Program Director for EBV and her assistant.

Purdue Women’s Club Supports the Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) for the Fifth Year

Photos by Sarah Wassgren

Five years ago during a speech at a PWC luncheon, Melis sa Evans from The Krannert Business School asked if PWC could support providing welcome bags for the veterans coming to the EBV program. PWC members leaped in and have been doing it ever since with different members leading the project from year to year.

For her second year Sarah Wassgren coordinated the effort and on October 26 delivered the Goodie Bags for the Entrepre-neurial Boot camp to Muna Oto, the Purdue Program Director for the 2017 EBV.

PWC has been supporting this program for five years and each year PWC members have come through with ‘goodie bags’ containing wonderful snacks, drinks and gifts. The bags are placed in the hotel room of each attendee as a ‘Thank you for your service.’ recognition.

EBV offers world-class, experiential training in entrepre-neurship and small business management to post-9/11 soldiers, sailors, aviators, and marines with disabilities resulting from their ser-vice to our country. EBV is designed to provide this training without any cost whatsoever to the veteran.

The firm belief is that our veterans have al-ready earned the price

of admission, as a consequence of their military service.

Many thanks to all those PWC members who contributed items and time to this worthy endeavor!

Tea Time and Theater in Carmel for Explore Indiana in November

On a beautiful fall day in November, 16 Explore Indiana members enjoyed an English tea experience at Tina’s Tradi-tional Old English Kitchen in Carmel, Indiana. After selecting three individual tea options, teapots were placed on the dining tables to steep to perfection using hour glass timers. While the teas were steeping, finger sandwiches of traditional English Cu-cumber, cream cheese and dill; chicken salad; egg salad, and English cheddar with green tomato chutney; and turkey with dried cranberries were served. Conversation swirled around the tast-ing of the individual teas and sandwiches and, while additional pots of tea steeped, scones with clotted cream and jam were served for desert.

Following lunch the group toured The Palladium, the mag-nificent centerpiece of the performing arts movement in Carmel. Opened in 2011 and seating 1,600, it hosts the Indianapolis Sym-phony Orchestra, as well as orchestras from other US cities and other countries, vocalists and ensemble groups, instrumentalists, choirs, ballet performances, and much more.

Our tour guide led us through this beautiful concert hall and gave us opportunities to view the venue from every available seating opportunity. His suggestion was seating in the balcony—“you can see everything and the perfect acoustics in the hall make those seats some of the best in the house.”

The Palladium has an education center with outreach pro-grams, one providing musical therapy to dementia patients. It is home to a museum housing the Michael Feinstein Foundation which contains memorabilia and manuscripts of The Great Ameri-can Songbook Collection, music created during the first half of the 20th century representing the golden age of American popular music. The Palladium is impressive and a must see!

A Wonderful PWC Holiday Bus Trip to Chicago!

The bus was full as we rode up to Chicago in the early morning on Wednesday, November 29. Some of us went to Macy’s (which used to be Mar-shall Fields) and enjoyed the decorated windows and ate lunch with family in The Walnut Room. We had coffee and cake pops that was a wonderful treat before heading off to the Christkindle Markt in Daley Plaza for German decorations, hot

spiced wine, Wiener schnitzel and potato pancakes. Others enjoyed ‘Escape to Margaritaville’ at the Oriental Theater and some delighted in ’White Christmas’ at The Music Box Thea-ter. Eataly was a favorite spot too. There were lots of packag-es stowed in the cargo spaces as we drove home!

Jeanna Jones and Jacky Ralph did a great job of facilitating the trip right down to providing drinks and snacks for the bus rides and making absolutely sure we all knew where and when to gather back for the ride home. As we drove south on Michi-gan Avenue the lights and decorations were just magical!

Think about joining us for the Spring Chicago Trip 5/23/18!

Explore Indiana Tours Two Fascinating Sites on The Purdue Campus, Thursday, January 25!

Explore Indiana will visit the central campus of Purdue University on January 25 to visit the campus nuclear reactor and the brand new classroom/library building - The Wilmeth Active Learning Center. Purdue is home to the only nuclear reactor in Indiana, located three stories beneath the Electrical Engineering Building. It became operational in 1962 and is licensed to produce up to one kilowatt of thermal power, compa-rable to the energy demand of a hair dryer. Its primary purpose is training students in the principles of reactor physics and is used as a source for neutrons for research in nuclear engi-neering, health science, chemistry, pharmacy, agriculture, biology and nanotechnology.

After lunch a tour is planned for the new hot-spot on campus, the Wilmeth Active Learning Center. It is estimated that 5,000 students use this facility daily. The 164,000-square-foot facility houses the Library of Engineering and Science and 27 classrooms designed for active learning. Throughout the building, study and collaborative spaces are interspersed with the classrooms, creating highly efficient use of space. Melinda Bain will facilitate this experience and you may contact her at [email protected] if you wish to participate or have questions.
