As Official Jewellery Designer to the Melbourne Ring Cycle, Gray Reid Gallery has created a necklace designed especially for The Ring Gala Dinner. Guests have the opportunity to bid on an elegant string of pearls, consisting of 85 precious South Sea pearls in a ‘rainbow’ colour selection. The strand uniquely features three sterling silver flame rings, representing Wotan’s ring of fire, dispersed between the pearls and which are engraved with Melbourne Ring Cycle 2013. Each individual pearl is sized at 8–12mm and knotted with a white gold clasp.

Since 1999, Gray Reid Gallery has become renowned for offering unique, yet timeless pieces of Australian jewellery and objects d’art. Their Collins Street showroom hosts exhibitions of artisan-designed contemporary jewellery from the Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia, as well

Bill Henson and Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery are delighted to offer this important work by Henson. The photograph is part of the celebrated series, the ‘Paris Opera Project’, a body of work that resulted from a commission from the Paris Opera. The image depicts a young girl in the half-light reflected from the stage of the Salle Favart, her jewellery glistening in the inky blackness of the darkened auditorium.

Henson was commissioned in 1990 to produce a work in response to the opera. The organisation responsible for the management of the opera houses of Paris had for many years commissioned artists to collaborate on a wide variety of productions. At the time Henson was working on his photographs, Richard Serra was also working on a commission which involved him carving gigantic styrofoam figures which were to be used in another production. Works by many great contemporary artists had entered the collection, previously including painted backdrops by Cy Twombly.

This project took Henson to Paris many times over the course of 12–18 months where he continued to photograph audiences sitting in the darkness awaiting some special event. The photographic studies made in Paris at the time were subsequently brought back to Melbourne where Henson recreated and refined these images.

Many critics have cited Henson’s use of lighting and the influences and inspiration drawn from the great European figurative traditions. Subtle highlights on a nose or collarbone are also reminiscent of Renaissance portraiture. Henson’s photographs are often likened to paintings.

Bill Henson is one of Australia’s most distinguished artists. He held his first solo exhibition, at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1975. Henson’s work is now in every major public collection in Australia as well as important museum collections worldwide, such as the Tate in London and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, USA Los Angeles County Museum in Los Angeles, USA Denver Art Museum, USA Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris in France, The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Spain, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arta, Houston Museum of Fine Art and the Sammlung Volpinum in Vienna, Austria.

This photograph is an iconic image by an iconic Australian artist.

Have you ever dreamed of being an opera star on stage?

This is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform a walk-on role in one of the greatest operas ever written, Bizet’s captivating Carmen on the State Theatre stage at the Arts Centre, Melbourne.

Dark, beautiful and a little bit dangerous, the vivacious gypsy girl Carmen is caught in the middle of a love triangle. She is provocative, feisty and alluring, making this Spanish production an all-time favourite. Carmen took the world by storm in this year’s Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour.

You will join internationally acclaimed and in-demand Nancy Fabiola Herrera on stage as she sings Bizet’s in Francesca Zambello’s production, and star alongside Opera Australia favourites Diego Torre, Michael Honeyman, Sharon Prero with the Opera Australia Chorus and Orchestra Victoria.

You will be credited in the cast sheet on the night of your performance(s) and receive tickets for four of your greatest fans to watch you debut on your big night!

Costume fitting and one onstage rehearsal are also included.

Please note: This is a non-singing role for one adult, for up to three performances on either Saturday 17, Tuesday 20 or Wednesday 21 May 2014. A total for four tickets is included. You will need to be available for a costume fitting 10 days prior to your performance at The Opera Centre in Melbourne and on stage rehearsal will take place on the day of your performance. Travel is not included and is the successful bidder’s responsibility.

Ensure Opera Australia’s ongoing success for the future by supporting our young artists.

Opera Australia’s Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Program is for selected young Australian opera singers, conductors and repetiteurs to strengthen and supplement their already evident talent and performance skills.

By becoming involved closely with the rehearsal and performance activity of the company, these promising young artists are able to perform in mainstage productions, participate in workshops and master-classes with leading singers and conductors and be mentored by experienced artists.

In 2013 three artists have participated in this program – Jonathan Abernethy, Natalie Aroyan and Sam Roberts-Smith. These artists have followed in the footstep of singers like Taryn Fiebig, Martin Buckingham, Nicole Car, Amelia Farrugia, Warwick Fyfe and Emma Matthews all of whom are graduates of the Young Artist Program.

It is our aim to raise as much as possible to support this invaluable program. Our auctioneer will call out funding levels at $20,000, $10,000, $5,000, $2,500, $1,500, $1,000, $500, $250 and $100. When you hear the level at which you wish to make a donation simply raise your hand until an Opera Australia member gives you a bidding form to sign. These forms will be collected once completed.

All gifts of $1,500 or more will entitle you to Patron program benefits and acknowledgement in our production programs for one year.

All donations will be issued with a tax-deductible receipt and every dollar raised will contribute to the Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Program. Opera Australia is registered as a Deductable Gift Recipient (DGR) on the Australian Gift Register.

New Zealand born artist, Alan Somerville, presents his ‘Cante Libre’ sculpture (right image) and matching ‘Cante Libre’ taken (below image), from his series on Spanish flamenco dancers.

As a figurative sculptor, Somerville captures the strong form of the Spanish dancer – her movement, energy and attitude in his cold cast bronze sculpture and drawing. This ‘working’ drawing of ‘Cante Libre’ is a vital part of Somerville’s creative process to create his sculptures – understanding how to best evoke and translate emotion into three-dimensional form.
