@RiversideMhead THIS TERM’S SCHOOL VALUES ARE TO SPOT OUR CHILDREN WHO ARE:
DON’T FORGET MOTHER’S DAY ON SUNDAY. BEECH CLASS DIDN’T, AND
EVEN RECRUITED KANDINSKY TO HELP
CONFIDENT & RESILIENT
From the Head’s Chair
This week our year 2 children have been taking maths outside and bringing it to life
whilst measuring and recording their Olympic jumps. The focus, measurement and
discussion was a great part of their learning and the discussion, team work and pride
was palpable. I’ve tweeted Greg Rutherford so let’s see if he responds! Well done beech
and Birch class’.
The second Phonics session was again well attended by parents of Reception children
and I am really proud that so many of you took the opportunity to come and learn about
how we help teach children to read
at RIVERSIDE – as well as how you
can help accelerate this at home.
Thank you Mrs Arnold – especially
as it was your birthday! (We did sing
)
Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic visit to
Ufton Court on Thursday to support
their learning about the Anglo
Saxons. They experienced a Viking
Long-ship and recreated the battle
of reading, whilst getting physical and really bringing their learning to life! Well done
children and thank you to Mr Bennett and Miss Moody for arranging the trip.
Year 2 have also been learning about
growing plants in science, understanding
life cycles and what plants need to keep
healthy. They
have planted
radishes,
lettuces and
sunflowers so
I look forward
to seeing the
fruits of their
labour!
Meanwhile, in
Reception,
the children
have been
putting their taste
buds to the test
this week and by
the looks of things,
the sour taste of
the lemon juice on
their porridge was
quite new and
unexpected! These
experiences are
brilliant and the
fact we can
capture them for
posterity is even better
Finally this week I’m really proud that we have our PTA building their activities, intentions
and visibility – the piece in this week’s Maidenhead advertiser is lovely. Thanks to the
work so many of you have put in so far and I look forward to reaping the rewards for the
school and, most importantly, the children in the future

P E NEWS
We had a fantastic week for RIVERSIDE this
week, with yet more proud moments and
exciting times...
The Year 4 football team had a mixed School
Sports Partnership competition at Altwood
School on Thursday morning and the children
were extremely excited!!!
We had 3 games to play on our pitch and there
were 14 teams playing. We started off against
Courthouse
(who
eventually got
through to the semi-finals) and lost 2-0, however it
was a great warm up game to start us off, as our
second game against Cookham Dean was a victory
with a hat-trick being scored by Amaan and Haleema,
the final score being 4-1. Our last game was against St
Lukes. We maintained the pressure but neither side
scored (which was a shame) but all the same it was a
thrilling game! Well done to all the players and
particularly well done to Azaan, as he managed to
save a goal with the help of Amaan.
The team played well as a team and we all had a lovely
time on the fantastic facilities Altwood School had to offer. Well done to Abdulaleem,
Ezzah, Haleema, Umaymmah, Azaan, Amaan I, Amaan A, Murtaza, Aiden and Salman:
you looked very smart and although we didn't get any further in the competition, we had
the opportunity to work as a team throughout the morning and we saw an improvement
in confidence and the team’s general standard of play.
After school was a home Netball match against Cookham Dean and this was another
exciting episode in the Riverside day. The year 3 and 4's were also having netball
practice so it was ‘all go’ this evening! In the first three quarters, Cookham Dean were
beating us but in the final quarter, we seemed to have got our positions right and it all
clicked into place and we finally won 9-7! It really was a nail biter of a game and as an
Umpire and a coach I was so pleased to see the determination of our children shine
through and win. Thanks to Mrs Yaseen for her help with refreshments after the game
(and words of encouragement from the sidelines) and to Mr Cranfield and Mrs Gowing to
cheer our team on as well as Mrs Azaad (cheering for both sides).
Well done to the team, Rehan, Michell (well done player of the match), Bre, Tasmiah,
Safia, Ruquyyah, Laiba Alesha and Laiba, we have another match against White
Waltham next week away so please wish us luck for that!
POPLAR CLASS NEWS
Poplar class have been very busy since the start of term.
This week in English we have been developing our
knowledge of issues and dilemmas. The children have
all shown great progress to what an issue and dilemma
is and how to write a response to dealing with the
problem. It has been very pleasing to see children
come up with their own solutions to a dilemma and
using descriptive and emotive writing, using a story hill
to support the structure
of their writing.
In Maths, we have been
learning how to
construct bar graphs
and describing how we
need to use a suitable
scale to present our
findings. We collected
data within the class
and created bar graphs about our favourite fruits and class birthdays.
It has been wonderful to see children in Poplar class to continue develop their reading
skills and enjoying a range of books, some children have been searching for words which
end in -s, -es or –ies. It is a real pleasure to see children read their favourite or a new
book.
Some children also had the opportunity to visit Altwood School to take part in a football
tournament, all the children were very excited to visit the school and play against other
competing schools. Well done to all the children who took part.
A big well done to all the children in Poplar Class. Keep up the good work!
Thank you to Mrs Duckworth and Mrs Ashton for all your hard work and support in
lessons, it is greatly appreciated.
