The Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation presents its new
CD/DVD edition In cooperation with the label belvedere edition the Mozarteum Foundation is publishing
highlights of the Mozart Week from its beginnings until today.
Contemporary history and the history of interpretation become audible on carefully restored
sound documents in excellent sound quality. Moreover, the edition will also comprise current
recordings from the Mozart Week and concerts throughout the season, using the most up-to-
date recording and production techniques.
Special issues will be made on the label as exclusive presents for patrons and sponsors of the
Mozarteum Foundation, such as for instance the recent festive concert in which Mozart’s Costa
violin was played.
The Mozart Week has taken place annually in Salzburg since 1956. Renowned artists have made
their mark on this festival since its beginnings and created a distinct impact as regards
interpretation, artistic analysis and musical performance.
Concerts from the Mozart Week have been recorded on radio and television since the
inauguration of the festival. The treasures in the archives of these concert recordings are now
being issued on CD and DVD.
The series starts with three CD recordings which illustrate the broad spectrum of Mozart
interpretations. These titles are available in music stores from February 2014, distributed by
harmonia mundi or in the Mozarthaushandels- und Versandgesellschaft der Internationalen
Stiftung Mozarteum Ges.m.b.H.: www.mozarthaus.biz

Wilhelm Backhaus plays Mozart
The CD Wilhelm Backhaus plays Mozart contains a recording of the pianist’s recital from
1956, the 200th anniversary of Mozart’s birth and also the year when the Mozart Week
was founded, and recordings from the recital in 1967. It offers an interesting
opportunity to compare Backhaus’s interpretations and the implicit relationships
Mozart’s compositions.
Writing in the CD booklet Wolfgang Schaufler says, “We have to bear in mind that
Backhaus worked closely with Hans Richter who conducted the first performances of
some works by Brahms.”

Bernhard Paumgartner rehearses and conducts Mozart A recording of a rehearsal in 1966 can be heard on the other CD. Bernhard Paumgartner
conducts the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra and rehearses the Symphony in E flat major, K. 543.
Through this CD we as listeners can share in the process of how an interpretation evolves. In his
charming Viennese manner Paumgartner reads and interprets the notation, for and with the
orchestral musicians, exploring the meaning beyond what is written down, convinced that
humility is essential for the performance of Mozart’s works.

Sándor Végh conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Very late in his career Sándor Végh came together with the world class orchestra renowned for
its supremely Viennese interpretations of Mozart: the Vienna Philharmonic. It was not until
1991 that Végh and the orchestra worked together briefly, in the Konzerthaus in Vienna, and
this led to a memorable concert during the Mozart Week, on 30 January 1992 in the Grosses
Festspielhaus in Salzburg. Two of the “late” Mozart symphonies were played, the Symphony in G
minor, K. 550 and the Symphony in E flat major, K. 543. The recording of this legendary
interpretation can be heard on the third CD in the edition.
