I’m now back in Spain for two months! It’s sonice to be here again, especially for the amaz-ing gambas pil pil that I’ve missed in the USA –plus the hot sunny days, of course! I’ve alsobeen very busy since arriving, mainly with get-ting my apartment de-cluttered and cleaned out(a big thanks to Carousel second hand furnitureshop for helping with that…do pop in there andtake a look at my old stuff!) I’ve also spent manyhours in IKEA buying furniture and other oddsand ends in order to redecorate. In fact, theprocess has been easy so far. I simply chosean IKEA living room that I liked and copied it,even down to the colour of the walls! The mostenjoyable part of my trip here so far has beencatching up with my lovely parents, and meet-ing friends from La Herradura and Marbella sofar – although there are plenty more friends tosee in the coming weeks.

October 11th marks my one year wedding an-niversary with Terry (though I call him ‘T’) andwe’re celebrating with a road trip to Porto, Por-tugal. T has travelled to 97 countries in his lifeso far, but he has never been to Portugal, sothis will increase his total to 98 countries visited!After that we’re going to Paris and AxisProvence, where T is holding seminars, and I’llget to see him in action, doing what he loves.So it’s a very busy time for me right now, espe-cially coupled with the usual book writing, bookediting for clients, Sentinella-ing, and managingthe new online business I recently started.

As I write this it’s currently still sweltering hot inthe day times, but fortunately the evenings havecooled off a tad. I’m typing these words as Iogle a beautiful sea view at sunset, and there’sa small rainbow poking through a sheet ofwispy clouds. I’ll take that as a good sign… :)

Bear Necessity A bear which sparked a Face-book campaign after wandering around Penn-sylvania with a bucket on its head has beenfreed. A group of volunteers approached theblack bear and managed to remove the bucketthat had become stuck on the animal's head —and they filmed the effort. Facebook page'Save the Bucket Bear' called on authorities tofree the bear which had only been able to feeditself through a small crack in the bucket. Agroup of people managed to keep the beardown and, after failing to pull the bucket off,used a saw to cut through it. The bear immedi-ately ran free.

Inheritance tax in Spain is about to change,and people who paid it may be able to re-claim some of the tax

This month the European court has decidedthat Spain has been discriminating against nonresidents by charging inheritance tax where aresident would be exempt from tax. The deci-sion in Commission v Spain Case C-127/12states that this discrimination is unlawful.

At present most inheritance tax allowances inSpain are regional and only apply when boththe deceased and the beneficiaries are offi-cially resident in Spain. In the case of residentsthe tax rules of that particular region will apply.If either the deceased or the beneficiary is nonresident then the State inheritance tax rulesapply.

Several regions including the Balearics, Valen-cia and Murcia have virtually no inheritance taxbetween spouses or between parents and chil-dren. Some regions have generous al-lowances. Andalucía allows a gift to a spouse,child or parent of up to €175,000 tax free.

These allowances only apply where the de-ceased and beneficiaries are residents. If not,the much less generous state rules apply whichsimply allow a deduction of just under €16,000from the gift for tax purposes for spouse, chil-dren and parents of the deceased. Some nonresidents may have paid thousands more thanresidents.

The European court decision says this is un-lawful but stopped short of ordering Spain topay compensation to those wrongly charged in-heritance tax. However there is an implied rightfor those who have been wrongly charged toclaim this in the Spanish Courts.

If you have paid Spanish inheritance tax in re-spect of a death which occurred in the last fouryears then you may be able to claim this backif :

1) The amount you paid in tax was more than€4,0002) You or the person you inherited from was anon-resident of Spain3) You are related to the deceased throughmarriage or a parent-child relationship4) You would have paid less tax if you had beena resident of Spain. In Andalucía this would

apply if the qualifying beneficiary received as-sets to the value of less than €175,000.

For those who are going through the inheri-tance procedure at the moment it is likely youwill still need to pay the tax in Madrid as a non-resident. There remains a six months deadlinefor the tax to be paid though this can be ex-tended in certain circumstances. It is quite pos-sible the European decision will tempt Spain,and the regions, to recover more inheritancetax from all residents but it is very important toget advice now on whether you may have aclaim and how much inheritance tax you will beobliged to pay under the current rules.

A yacht company have been left with theword ‘Penis’ written on their vehicle after asignwriting blunder

A yacht company has become a laughing stockafter an eagle-eyed joker noticed the doors ofits vans slide back to spell the word ‘Penis’.

Bosses at Pendennis Shipyard had posh com-pany logos painted on the side of their two FordTransit Connect vehicles. But the boat-buildingfirm based in Cornwall, failed to realise the let-tering for Pendennis is partially obscured whenthe doors are slid open - leaving just the word'penis'. :)

The error went unnoticed until joker WilliamTregidgo spotted staff parked up and posted iton the web where it was retweeted more than6,000 times.

He said: "I saw it and couldn't believe howfunny it was. My friend put it on Twitter."I thought it was a real laugh but I didn't think itwould become such a hit."People on Twitter even suggested if the blun-der was a publicity attempt.

David McGuire tweeted, "If that Pendennis vanis a deliberate stunt, somebody needs a biglesson in marketing."Another user, Ciaran Clarke, wrote: "Possiblythe best van door work I've ever seen, goodwork Pendennis".While the Twitter account for garment hangercompany, Dritek, simply sees the funny side:"Pendennis Superyachts' fleet of vans areproving more eye catching than expected ;)"Bosses at Pendennis have yet to comment onthe issue.

A mum was given the shock of her life whenshe discovered eggs from the 'world’s deadliestspider’ in her Tesco bananas. Abby Woodgate,30, thought her newly delivered bananas hadmould on them but when she poked the bunchwith a toothpick, a cocoon opened, revealingdozens of tropical eggs. She called her localTesco store, which had delivered the shoppingto her home in Colchester, Essex, and was toldpest control experts would come to her home.She later discovered the eggs were from theBrazilian wandering spider - which are ex-tremely aggressive and venomous. The mum-of-one said: "I couldn't believe it when the littlecocoon opened. I thought it was just somemould and I was trying to get it off so I coulduse the rest of the bunch."Even when I saw what was in it - it looked justlike frog spawn - I still didn't think the worst."But then it dawned on me and I jumped andthrew them in the bin."Mrs Woodgate said: "The pest controllersasked where the eggs were and I told them thebin and they said 'right, we'll take that'."Then they asked had anything else come intocontact with the eggs, and I told them about my

vacuum cleaner, so they said 'we'll have to takethat too'. "All they could tell me is they thoughtthey were tropical spider eggs."Spider experts have told her it was unlikely thetropical eggs would hatch because it was notwarm enough in the UK and there were noadult spiders with them. If I see one, I've beentold it's safe to squash it, as you might do otherspiders. Tesco has offered to replace her binand the cleaner. A spokesman said: "We setourselves high standards for the food we selland were concerned to hear of this incident anwill investigate”.

Next year artists will be joining us in the Axar-quia from the UK, Belgium, Holland, Scandi-navia and the USA. They are coming forHeather Harman's painting holidays, spon-sored by International Unison Colour. Whenshe is not hosting these groups the chancesare she is guest of honour in various FrenchPastel Societies — of which she is a memberand demonstrates every year — or writing arti-cles on pastel, landscape and portrait paintingfor the British and US art press.

So why with all this success, is Heather still sokeen to teach beginners? ‘Because as a self-taught artist, I know what it is like to want tolearn and get the right information when I needit,’ she says. ‘I never did, so I learned the hardway by trial and error.’

Axarquia Hash House Harriers (AH3) is a so-cial, non-competitive club. Every second Sun-day of the month at 12:00 midday we meet atdifferent places throughout Axarquia – mainly inthe campo or villages around Velez Malaga.Members take turns acting as ‘hares’ which in-volves laying a trail of flour. The rest of the hash(the ‘hounds’) follow the trail which takes abouttwo hours and eventually leads back to thestart. Hounds can walk, jog or run along theroute according to their ability and inclination.To liven things up the hares include some falsepaths and dead ends. To liven up flagginghounds a beer/soft drinks stop is included alongthe way and cold drinks are also provided at theend of the hash. After the hash we usually headto a nearby restaurant for a very sociable meal.

The hash is open to all ages, abilities and na-tionalities. All you need is a good pair of train-ers, a reasonable level of fitness and a senseof humour. Bottles of cold water are provided atthe start to take with you on the ‘run’ and haresare happy to look after valuables for you sothere’s no risk of dropping your car keys in aditch! There is a grass that is used all around theworld and once planted it forms a natural de-fense against erosion or you could say an “un-derground retaining wall.”

The facts Vetiver Grass is unlike any othergrass. Vetiver roots grow vertically, reaching upto 4 metres deep. They have a high tensilestrength (equivalent to 1.6 mil steel) this makesit an excellent stabilizerfor edges and terraces.Vetiver can grow up to1.5 metres tall. Theleaves are long andthin, similar to LemonGrass, but with an in-credible root systemthat Lemon Grass doesnot have. Also they cancoexist with other plantsand fruit trees, etc. asthe roots grow straightdown. The plants aresterile so they do notspread where you don’t want them.

When plated to form natural barriers, proximityto growing clumps restricts the passage ofwater while trapping sediments present. Theroots hold the slope or ravine – sourceWikipedia, see the website for more usefullinks.

Now some more goodnews Vetiver grass cannow be bought in Spainfrom VetiverSpain inSayalonga, just inlandfrom the coast 7 kmabove Algarrobo. WhenDavid and Anna firstmoved to Spain theirhouse was located on amountainside that wasnot usable land. Theyhad their land terracedand then they had badsoil erosion in the firstheavy rain so theystarted researching forsomething to plant that

had a good rootstructure. After ex-tensive researchthey came upon theVetiver Grass Sys-tem. When planted,it rapidly multipliedand their problemwas quickly solved.The plants requireno special soils or fertilizers and are very sim-ple to plant. Just plant them between 15 –30cms apart and water for the first couple ofmonths every other day to start them off andjust a few months later, you will have a natural

underground retain-ing wall! This plantcan tolerate extremeconditions, from550C in South Africato - 220C in North-ern China, it is alsovery fire tolerant.Vetiver grass is al-most indestructibleby fire!

The Spanish Ministry of Finance and Public Ad-ministration will grant a six-month period fromJanuary 2015 to regularise foreign pensionswithout imposing any sanctions. The SpanishTax Administration Service has found that sometaxpayers who were resident in Spain havebeen receiving foreign pensions which were notcorrectly declared for income tax purposes.

Fellowship Of The King, NerjaA new season of CAMEO gets under way onWednesday 8th October at 3pm at their reg-ular venue of the Fellowship of The Kingpremises in Pasaje San Miguel, Nerja - op-posite the pet shop at the side of Mer-cadona.

For the uninitiated CAMEO (which stands forCome And Meet Every One) has grown out ofa small group of friends from the Punta Laraarea who for several years have met in varioushomes over the winter months to learn or to im-prove their painting techniques. They haveworked in watercolours, oils, pastels and alsosketching with both charcoal and pencil. Therehave also been sessions on perspective andcomposition. Last season ended with a shortseries of Master Classes given by a profes-sional artist from the UK.The group prefers to describe themselves asenthusiastic amateurs rather than experts whomeet for fun and friendship rather than to "doart classes", nevertheless some of the mem-bers have produced very creditable work. We’ve all been told to eat our vegetables:they’re good for us. But while certain veg-etables always seem to get the attention —leafy greens such as broccoli, cabbage andspinach, for example — scientific researchshows that some which we tend to write offare actually nutritional all-stars, too. Celeryis a case in point.

Celery is a great choice if you are watchingyour weight. One large stalk contains only 10calories.

Celery reduces inflammation. If you are suffer-ing from joint pains, lung infections, asthma oracne, eating more celery will bring much-needed relief.

It helps you calm down. The minerals in celery— especially magnesium and the essential oilin it — soothe the nervous system. If you enjoya celery-based snack in the evening, you willsleep better.

It regulates the body’s alkaline balance, thusprotecting you from problems such as acidity.

Celery aids digestion: its high water content,combined with the insoluble fibre in it, makes agreat tool for easy passage of stools. However,because celery has diuretic and cleansingproperties, those with diarrhoea should avoideating it.

It contains “good” salts. This is not the samething as table salt — the salt in celery is or-ganic, natural and essential for your health.

Another study suggests that the regularintake of celery could significantly delay the formation of breast cancer cells.

Benajarafe Costa isn´t a village as such,more a stretch of coastline located 14 kilo-metres from Málaga between Rincon de laVictoria and Torre del Mar. As you drivefrom the latter towards Málaga with the seaon your left the difference in terrain is ex-traordinary.

Torre del Mar has numerous chiringuitos andbeaches filled with sun beds and then from Al-mayate on, the beaches are bare except forSpaniards who take their tents and go for theday. Just the beach, some cane and the sea!Then suddenlythe seaside re-sort of Bena-jarafe changeseverything, withits oasis of palmtrees and ba-nana plants,beach beds,chiringuitos andeven a BayWatch style lifeguard look-out post! Sadly the 3 date palms that once stood majes-tically next to the bus station have been gob-bled up by the evil red palm weevil, havingeaten its way through the date palms in Egyptit is now set to destroy those in Spain and itseems that nothing can be done about it. Onlythe fan palms seem to remain unaffected asthis terrible predator munches its way inland,destroying palm after palm in its path.

Although Benajarafe is now all fresh and mod-ern, it has been inhabited since the Palae-olithic era. In fact it is believed that the Greekcolony, Mainake, used to be somewherearound this area, although the exact locationis still being seached. Archaelogical remainshave been discovered next to the Velez riverfurther along the coast at Torre del Mar. Bena-jarafe became a medieval farmstead after theMoors had settled there and it was they whogave it its current name.

Modern day Benajarafe is a good place to visitif you want fun on the beach or simply to enjoyits many bars and restaurants and one of thebest bakeries on the coast.

In the 2014 budget, Chancellor George Os-bourne proposed some significant changesto work based pensions in the UK, sched-uled to take effect from April 2015.

There are two main types of work based pen-sion schemes, described very basically as fol-lows:

Defined Contribution schemes in which a potof money is built up through employee and/oremployer contributions, and when the holdertakes their pension, the size of the pot dictatesthe level of their pension income.

Defined Benefit (or Final Salary) schemes inwhich the level of pension income is deter-mined by the number of years the holder wasan active member of the scheme, and theirsalary during this time.

Many of the planned changes improve the flex-ibility of defined contribution schemes, and par-ticularly the level of income that can be taken.In contrast, defined benefit schemes are largelyunaffected, which may result in members of de-

fined benefit schemes wanting to transfer todefined contribution schemes to access thesenew benefits. This could represent a significant cost for theGovernment should those in public sector de-fined benefit schemes (i.e. Armed Forces,Teachers, Civil Service, Police, NHS and LocalGovernment) decide to transfer. As a conse-quence, the Government is proposing to intro-duce legislation to remove the option totransfer for those in public sector schemes, ex-cept in very limited circumstances.

Members of public sector schemes thereforehave a very limited window (likely to be shut forgood from April 2015) to review their pensionarrangements and see whether they wouldbenefit from a transfer to a defined contributionscheme whilst they still can.

The Siamese fighting fish was given its namein Thai, “ikan bettah” which means biting fishIt is known for its feisty temperament, dis-played towards other males and smallerspecies of fish.

Fighting fish can often display very aggressivebehaviour towards any animals that it sees asa threat to them.

The Siamese fighting fish is easily recogniseddue to the beautiful colours displayed on itsbody.

They have long and elaborately-coloured fins,which are longer on the male than the female. They usually grows to a length of about 6.5cm(2.6in).

The Siamese fighting fish is carnivorous,mainly eating insects and brine shrimp andalso the larger food particles that are part ofthe plankton in the water.

Due to its small size, bright colours and long,attractive fins, the Siamese fighting fish ispreyed on by many other animals, includinglarger fish, cats, newts, salamanders, birdsand humans who catch them to keep in tanksat home.

When they mate, Siamese fighting fish spiralround each other. Prior to this, the male willhave constructed a bubble nest near the sur-face of the water.

Between 10 and 45 eggs are released and fer-tilised externally at each embrace. Once thefemale has released all her eggs, she ischased away from the territory by the male, asit is likely she would eat the eggs.

The male Siamese fighting fish carefully keepsevery egg in his bubble nest, making surenone fall to the bottom, and repairs the nest asneeded.

The incubation period of the eggs is 24 to 36hours.

Males will occasionally even respond aggres-sively to their own reflections in a mirror.

This is a 3 day event where the clubs fromCalpe, Javea, Estepona, Mallorca, Gibraltar,Nerja and the Algarve meet for a long weekendof fun and fellowship. Our club formed a com-mittee to run the event two years ago and havebooked 95 rooms at Las Marinas Aparthotel asour host venue. Many will join us from the Na-tional Executive of 41 Club in England, includ-ing the national vice president Terry Cooperand past international president Alan Reynolds.Nerja 41 Club has members from several coun-tries, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Denmark aswell as England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.Inviting our friends from our home 41 Clubs inNorthern Europe to join us has boosted thenumbers to a magnificent 240. The other day somebody asked me “whatdo you do at La Vaqueria?” I was lost forwords! Where to begin? It would be quickerto list what we don’t do!

The actual building, La Vaqueria, is the old vil-lage dairy of Benamargosa and when I firstsaw it thirteen years ago I just knew I wouldlove it to be my art studio, five years later Iopened up with one room selling anything thatI had painted or decorated myself and givingart classes. eight years on I still do both + lots,lots more in lots more rooms!!!

A visit here is an arty and unique experience;right from the start, as you enter there arepieces of recycled art on display, large mosaicsand our lovely garden full of interesting sculp-tures, ecological space and water saving ideasand garden art. As La Vaqueria is not a placethat you would just be passing it soon becameapparent that visitors would need refreshing!We serve snacks, English breakfasts, lightlunches and cake, all home made during allopening hours; in fact our food has become sopopular that we now have a take away menuand open on Sundays to serve The SundayBrunch – a buffet of a minimum of 15 dishes to

choose from with three different sizes/prices tosuit the whole family! Our menu is really styledon the traditional English Country Kitchen usingas much as we can from our vegetable gardenalong with fresh local produce.

As an artist I am frequently painting in betweenserving but am very happy to offer newcomersto the area advice on where to buy art materialor help with Spanish translation. I also give 2classes per week on painting, drawing andcrafts suitable for all levels but very relaxed andencouraging everyone to “have a go”. In addi-tion to all of this there are monthly mosaicworkshops, we have also just started a monthlyYard Sale and this month sees the return of ourweekly Friday vegetarian supper evening.

Recipe Of The MonthChicken and Grape Salad with Creamy Cit-rus Dressing

This is a really tasty and satisfying low fatchicken salad with a difference.

1 tbsp oil4 chicken breasts50g/2oz smoked streaky bacon or lardons, frieduntil crispy225g/8oz red and green grapes, halved1 cucumber, cut into bit sized pieces1 red pepper, sliced1 yellow pepper, sliced2 stalks celery2 eating applesMixed salad leaves

For the dressing200ml carton low fat crème fraiche2 tbsp orange juiceJuice ½ lemon2 tsp French mustard

Method:1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan, cut thechicken breasts into bite sized pieces and gen-tly fry with the bacon until the chicken is cookedand the bacon brown. Transfer to a mixing bowlwith the grapes, cucumber, chopped apples andcelery.

2. Add the peppers to the pan and cook until theskin is charred then add to the chicken mixture.

3. To make the dressing, place all the ingredi-ents in a small bowl and whisk well.

Hi, I would have to say that apart from some great articles, the thing Ilike most about the Sentinella Magazine is that you honour the memory ofColin Checkley the founder of the magazine, every month! What I like most about The Sentinella, well it's not easy as there are lots of

things I like. Also the size is so convenient. As a bit of a nerd for figures I love

the top tens and factual items like "Countries of the World", "Useless Facts" and

"Fruit and Veg facts" etc. I also love to do puzzles, brain-teasers, sudoku and

crosswords but I think the best thing is probably the jokes. I can only give an

example from this months mag. It was the page entitled Dr. Who. It had me and

the wife cackling with laughter with my favourite being the last one. "Patient has
