The next day they try to sell the pearl, but the salesmen try to cheat them. Juana tries to get rid of the pearl, but Kino stops her. Kino fights off robbers, killing one. Their canoe and hut are destroyed. They flee to the capital, but are pursued by three trackers. They ascend into the mountains and hide in a cave. Kino kills the trackers, but one fires a shot into the cave, killing Coyotito. They walk back to the village and Kino hurls the pearl back into the sea.

Many of the Company’s agents dislike Kurtz out of envy.
