Message from Our Rabbi

A Hasidic Tale

In a small village was a rebbe who told his Hasidim, “Something can be observed and learned from anything. And we may learn not only from the things God has made. The creations of man can also serve as a teacher.”

“Then tell us, rebbe,” said one of the Hasids, smiling, “what does a train teach us?”

“A train can teach us,” said the rebbe, “that if a person is sometimes one second late, he can miss everything.”

“And, rebbe,” asked another Hasid, “what possibly can a telegram teach us?”

“From a telegram,” said the rebbe, “we learn that in life every word is counted and we are charged for every word.”

“And, rebbe,” asked another Hasid, sure he had caught his teacher, “what in the slightest can a telephone teach us?”

“Aah,” came the answer. “From the telephone we learn that everything we say here is heard there,” said the rebbe, pointing to the heavens.

There is much to learn from this Hasidic tale. Most notably is that everything we do in life teaches us about life. Life is one continuous lesson. The most important lesson, to me, is that every moment presents an opportunity, and that we have the ability to take each moment and make it count.

Summertime is no time to retreat from the adventures of those opportunities which can continue to give us fulfillment. For example:

THERE IS A FRIDAY NIGHT SERVICE IN JUNE: June 9 – 7:30 pm. It will be devoted to asking God to send healing for all our ailments. Hopefully it will also teach us that we are responsible for our actions as they affect our health.

THERE ARE TWILIGHT SERVICES IN JULY AND AUGUST – July 14 at 5:30 pm and August 11 at 5:30 pm. We will have opportunities to gather, reflect and remember our blessings.

THERE WILL BE NO FRIDAY EVENING SERVICE IN SEPTEMBER because of all the holidays:

September 20 – 7:30 pm EREV ROSH HASHANAH

September 21 – 10:00 am ROSH HASHANAH SERVICES

September 24 – 10:30 am (Valley of the Sun) – Kever Avot Service – honoring our ancestors.

September 29 – 7:30 pm Kol Nidrei Service

September 30 – 10:00 am – Yom Kippur Service

In the New Year we will introduce new programs to assist in maintaining those ties that bind. As we begin our 15th year together, my prayer is that we will all find the year ahead filled with fulfillment and a stronger connection to each other.

As this is the last Shpiel until the fall, Sandy and I wish each and everyone a great summer filled with all the joys and celebrations that make for happiness.

Rabbi Irwin Wiener, D.D.

President’s Message

Wishing everyone a good and peaceful summer.

Several personnel changes have occurred in the past month. We said thank you and goodbye to Alex Polesky. Alex set-up and took down the SLJC materials for our services. We welcomed Doug Ross who has taken over these duties. Our sound engineer started at our May service and will continue to support the audio for all the congregations using the Sun Lakes Chapel.

The Sun lakes Chapel will begin the process of adding the loop system to the Chapel after our June service. The induction loop systems, which magnetically transmit sound to hearing aids and cochlear implants with telecoils, will help our congregants hear the service. Additional headsets will be available on a limited basis for congregants with hearing aids that do not have the telecoils. The Chapel will also be getting new carpeting over the summer. A special THANK YOU to Barbara Reiss who headed the Chapel Board Committee that explored and determined the best choice carpet.

In April, I conducted two SLJC Congregational Meetings to update the congregation on some possible changes to the Bylaws and financial issues. I received input from the congregants on these issues and several other issues. On Wednesday May 24, 2017 the revisions to be SLJC Bylaws were approved by the congregation. At the May board meeting the Board voted to approve a $25 increase to our dues. Dues will now be $175 per person. Please complete the form and send your dues to Bety Dar as outlined on the dues form in this month’s SHPIEL. If you did not complete a Membership Information Form in the last year please complete the form which can be found on the SLJC WEB site under the tab FORMS and send it with your dues form to Bety Dar. In order to celebrate your birthdays and anniversaries and acknowledge yahrzeits we need your current information.

In addition, the board has been highlighting the recruitment and retention of members as a key component to the success of SLJC. In discussions and with input from the congregation a decision to offer free High Holiday tickets to NEW attendees to our High Holiday services has been made. These individuals will be considered as potential members and will have the opportunity to attend our High Holiday services and learn about the SLJC community. We will be advertising the High Holiday tickets in the local papers. Individuals wanting to come will be requested to sign up prior to the High Holiday services and a request for a donation will be included in the flyer. Prior members and current members who do not rejoin for the year starting September 1, 2017 through August 31, 2018 are not eligible for free tickets. These individuals must join to receive tickets for the High Holidays. As a reminder, tickets are NOT transferable. Guest tickets will be $50. Ushers will be checking tickets at the door.

Wende Levy, President

In October Bety and Michael Dar are planning on leading a trip to Israel. The tentative dates for the trip are October 15th through October 25, 2017. If you are interested in learning more about this trip please contact Bety at 480-882-9022.

Funding of Oneg Shabbats

Thank you to everyone who has made a donation to the Oneg Fund in honor of a life cycle event. To date your donations have funded each of our Onegs. Members of the SLJC Board of Directors will be contacting members who have birthdays, anniversaries and other life cycle (simcha) events to help defray the costs of our Onegs. Donations to our Onegs help the Board to balance the budget, but more importantly allow our congregants to celebrate with you.

Men’s Club

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 6th, 6:30 PM socializing and presentation at 7:00 PM at the Chapel House. We are excited to have Ben Brock, the General Manager of the Arizona OPTUM Care facilities, who will make a Power Point presentation giving us details about the new OPTUM Care facility that has opened in Chandler, their third location in Arizona. OPTUM Care is a Community Center open to all 55 and older area residents at NO CHARGE. This is very exciting for all of us!

Sisterhood

Sisterhood's Annual Paid Up Luncheon was held at Singing Pandas Restaurant on May 19. Members enjoyed the show's performances by Sherry, the owner, who sang songs in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Taiwanese and by her husband who performed Elvis songs. Sisterhood is proud to announce that a contribution of $6000 was made to the Temple as well as additional money to various local charities as a result of their fundraiser Card Party. Thank you to all of the sponsors and participants who made this event so successful. Mark your calendar for next year's Card Party on February 12. The next Sisterhood meeting will be on October 19.

Shalom Chapter of Hadassah

Just in time for the hot weather, Shalom Hadassah held FASHION TO A TEA, their High Tea & Fashion Show event at Oakwood Country Club. Six of our members modeled the clothes which were provided by Chico's in San Tan Village. The attendees all had a good time; they loved the fashions, the food, and the table decorations. Proceeds go to Hadassah Hospital in Israel to help support the many types of research in which they are engaged. For more information about Shalom Hadassah, contact Cyril Goodman at 480-802-0243.

Jewish Programming on DirecTV

Channel 388 on DirecTV is the Jewish Broadcasting Service (JBS), which presents a wide range of Jewish entertainment and education throughout the day. For example, a complete musical Shabbat Service is broadcast Fridays at 3PM from the Central Synagogue in New York City, and news from Israel is broadcast daily at 3PM, except for Friday when it is 2PM. During Chanukah, there were multiple special music programs like the award-winning “a cappella” group Maccabeats. Check it out.

Not Receiving The Shpiel or Eblasts Electronically?

Some congregants are having trouble receiving SLJC news from the new website address, possibly because some email providers are sending the messages straight to Spam. If any SLJC member you know is having this problem, tell them to add [email protected] to their contacts list, and add SLJC News to the name field in the contact.

Lone Soldier Project

Michael Cohen, Chairman of the Lone Soldier Project recently visited Chayal el Chayal, our Israeli partner and learned exactly how our gifts will be used. The Lone Soldier Project is requesting donations of $25.00 which will purchase a personal care package, a knitted hat and a pair of warm socks to be sent to Israel for distribution to Lone Soldiers.

Chayal el Chayal is located in a Lone Soldier Center in a residential area of Jerusalem. Lone Soldiers volunteer for the IDF from all over the world (USA and Ukraine lead the list). Upon arrival in Israel they may stay at the center for several weeks while they are completing pre-induction paperwork, taking psychometric testing and learning Hebrew. Once inducted into the IDF they often stay at the center while on leave from active duty, on Shabbat and on holidays.

Our care package contains travel size toiletries, sewing kits, sun screen and snacks. They are distributed to Lone Soldiers who stay at the center and are in need of these items. They very much appreciate receiving these items that would take time and money to acquire on their own.

The knitted hats and socks that we distribute to Lone Soldiers with cold weather assignments add to as much warmth as possible, especially on night duty in the winter. This gift is treasured and makes life a bit more comfortable for them.

Please join the cause!!! Show your appreciation for the commitment, courage and dedication shown by these young people by volunteering to be in the IDF. Make life a little easier and more comfortable for them. Donate $25.00 and give them a personal care package, knitted hat and pair of socks. To give, contact Michael Cohen at [email protected]

SLJC Second Trip to Israel

The Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation wants to embark again on another sacred mission – it’s second – to travel to the land where Judaism began – ISRAEL! This is an opportunity to re-visit or glimpse for the first time the land of milk and honey!

Israel 2017 – Renewal of a Dream, October 15-25.

We would like to form a list of members interested in taking part on this trip. The participation is not limited to SLJC members only!

Please email or call: BETY DAR at 480-882-9022 or [email protected]

In order to secure the best prices, an answer is needed no later than June 20 (the final price of the trip is based on the number of participants).

Beshalom,

Bety
