Students put safety first at self defense workshopShayla Bradley

Staff Writer

They heard tips on how to steer clear of threats,

then they kicked, punched, and defended themselves against intrusions on their personal space, learning how to ward off would-be attackers.

Students were empowered to protect themselves during a personal safety presentation last week, hosted by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Sunset Women’s Aboriginal Circle (SWAC), Ontario native Women’s Association (OnWA), and the Jim Sapay, Bonnie Osmond, and Marvin Osmond instructed students in using self defense techniques to protect themselves.

youth centre.Kimberly Murphy,

program outreach worker at SWAC, explained that the evening came about as a way to connect service providers, law enforcement personnel, and residents who want to know about things such as keeping safe.

“i contacted the OPP and told them about this initiative that i wanted to do and asked, what can you do to help me?” she explained. “We serve so many clients, so many families who need a lot of help.”

Murphy said the local police detachment put together a presentation on safety, which was a large part of the evening, along with self defense training

from karate experts Jim Sapay, and Bonnie and Marvin Osmond.

The police presentation stressed that the best thing people can do to protect themselves is to avoid dangerous or violent situations in the first place.

Paige Spade, youth centre coordinator, said young people have not necessarily been looking for self defense education, “but i think it’s something they should have on hand anyway, just to have precautions.”

“We wanted to get the Sioux Lookout youth involved in this and give them the skills to protect themselves,” she said.

“it’s always nice to have those skills in your tool belt,” Spade added.

Angela Kakekagumick,

aboriginal sexual assault worker with the Ontario native Women’s Association, said it was important for people to “have information on what to do in circumstances they come across, if they have to protect themselves.”

She highlighted another workshop coming november 17 which will be focused on student safety. The event will take place at the nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre, with a luncheon and information booths at the Centennial Centre.

Students looking to register should contact Allyson Lucas at QeDhS. Organizations can register booths with Chelsea Jeffrey at the friendship centre.

Part of the self defense instruction involved learning the confidence to step forward and protect oneself against an attacker. Students were initially cautious but quickly warmed up to the idea, picking up martial arts moves from the experts.

Sparks and Brownies have a Boo!dacious

time at their Hallowe’en party

The Girl Guides’ Sioux Lookout Spark and Brownie units joined forces October

27 to kick off the hallowe’en season with a celebratory holiday warm-up party.

Girls and leaders alike donned their favourite character costumes for an evening of dancing, games, crafts, and sampling of yummy treats. After costumes

were admired and pictures were taken, the lights were dimmed and Guider Liz set the hallowe’en mood with the telling of a spooky story of a monster’s creation. One-by-one, the monster’s body parts were passed along in paper bags among the

circle of girls. Those brave enough reached into the bag to feel the designated part - many shrieks of disgust and horror were heard!

Then it was hallowe’en Bingo with Guider Karen, a favourite game of many. next, Forest Owl had the girls bobbing for apples and after that, it was a quick decorating of a paper pumpkin with Snowy Owl before the party was hit up a notch and flown into high gear!

Tunes were blasted, treats were doled out, and the girls busted a move late into the night (8 p.m. that is).

Fashionistas at Sioux Mountain

Sioux Mountain Public School students participated in a fashion show november 4 to promote the school’s new school mascot and school clothing. it was a great success and everyone involved did an outstanding job.

Last year Shannon Whately, a teacher at Sioux Mountain, proposed

the idea to change the school’s mascot. Students participated in a design and voting process which lasted for several months. During this time students discussed the pros and cons of each of the potential mascots.

Students took ownership by creating their mascot and, in turn, generated a positive buzz around the school hallways. in the end

students voted and the Sioux Mountain huskies came to life!

Since then, teacher Larry Beardy, along with students Lizzy Anderson and Cyleigh Kejick, designed and painted a beautiful mural which will hang in the

school’s gymnasium.School clothing can

be purchased at Sioux Mountain Public School until november 13 and again in the new year. To order clothing online, visit kpdsb.schoolcashonline.com. To check out the video

and photos of the fashion show, and to see pictures of the clothing, visit Sioux Mountain Public School’s Facebook page.

TBRHSF continues support of SLMHCTim Brody

aSSoCiate editor

The Sioux Lookout Meno ya Win health Centre

(SLMhC) recently accepted a grant of $3786 from the northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional health Sciences Foundation (TBRhSF).

The funds will be used to purchase equipment for the chemotherapy unit, a core component of the palliative care unit.

Dan Bissonnette, TBRhSF Senior Development Officer,

presented the grant, stating, “We are able to strengthen our regional cancer program at the 13 satellite sites and provide exceptional cancer care close to home thanks to philanthropic support from people across northwestern Ontario, including those in Sioux Lookout. This investment is part of our commitment to our community to ensure that no matter where cancer care is provided, it is of the highest quality.”

“We’re thrilled to be the

recipient of this grant that will specifically be used to purchase a chemotherapy chair, overbed table, and a vital signs monitor,” explained heather Lee, SLMhC Vice President, health Services and Chief Nursing Officer. “having this dedicated, mobile equipment increases patient comfort and location flexibility, ensuring timely accessibility to individuals and their health care team members,” she added.

Lee concluded, “We are very grateful and appreciative of this donation.”

The grant is part of an ongoing commitment by the Thunder Bay

Regional health Sciences Foundation to support cancer care for patients in Sioux Lookout and surrounding communities.

A press release states, “Previously, between 2005 and 2013, $83,994 has been provided to the health Centre to fund

chemotherapy equipment, along with a Tandberg unit for Telemedicine and funding for a new hemodialysis machine. This new grant brings the 10-year total of investments to $87,780. none of it would have been possible without the community’s continued support of the Thunder Bay Regional health Sciences Foundation, and, in particular, the northern Cancer Fund.”

Also stated in the press release, “Last October, the Thunder Bay Regional health Sciences Foundation announced its exceptional Cancer Care campaign to raise $5.9 million in the community to ensure exceptional cancer

diagnoses, treatment and research for the people in northwestern Ontario. So far, $5.2 million (88 per cent of the goal) has been raised. Additionally, tbaytel has donated $15,000 to the tbaytel Tamarack Fund to support regional initiatives.”

Frank head, the Sioux Lookout tbaytel representative, was on hand for the presentation of the grant and stated, “if you look at a regional project that tbaytel could support, i don’t think there are many better, especially with them having a customer base throughout the region. i know they are very proud to be doing this.”

centre and provided free flights through Bearskin Airways, bringing people to workshops and festivals hosted by SLARC.

“he was a man who did much to build positive relationships and improved partnerships between the First nation people and others in the Sioux Lookout area,” read SLARC’s annual report.

Programming, organization, and board appointments also took place during the meeting.

“Our AGM facilitator, Kathy Pouteau, reviewed SLARC’s strategic planning exercise which is a guide intended to help SLARC programming in 2014-2016,” shared Chapman. “By establishing several subcommittees,

it is felt that SLARC will more effectively achieve its goals.”

SLARC established subcommittees for advocacy, awareness and promotion, governance, and sustainability.

“Community members were divided into three groups; advocacy, awareness and promotion, governance and sustainability; to engage in further discussion regarding the roles and objectives behind each subcommittee with SLARC board members,” explained Chapman.

“Feedback from community members was also a crucial part in these discussions. They were also encouraged to sign up for a place within each subcommittee if interested.”

A new SLARC board

of directors is in place for 2014-2015. Genny Kakekaspan, Victor Lyon, Simon Owen, and Romaine Wesley are returning to their roles. Darlene Angeconeb, Gerson Agustin, Loretta Carroll, Chelsea Jeffrey, yolaine Kirlew, and Shirley Meijaard are new members.

Residents can look

forward to SLARC’s usual programming in the coming year.

“We will soon begin planning our annual festivities for 2015 such as Racism Awareness Week and SLARC in the Summer, and as the dates get closer, details on what these events will feature will be announced,” said Chapman.

Guide intended to help SLARC programming 2014-2016

QE already overwhelmingly respectfulCreative Arts Circle for providing the equipment needed to screen the film.

The idea for a film screening fundraiser came about during a Grade 9 reach ahead program this summer, explained Campbell. She always tries to involve Blueberry Festival events within the reach ahead programming, which led students to Sioux Lookout’s Pride celebration.

“That was one option of Blueberry Festival events they could go to,” explained Campbell.

She said that having the GSA work with groups like the Friendship Centre and Blueberry Festival gets the whole community involved, rather than just students.

“it’s not just a school thing,” she said.

Mary Ann Flatt, another GSA lead, said the group is planning to host several events throughout the year to bring together young people and the community as a whole.

Campbell noted school administrators helped fund the film screening evening.

“The administration has been very supportive,” she said.

The GSA aims to promote open mindedness and acceptance but,

according to Campbell and other school staff, QeDhS is already o v e r w h e l m i n g l y respectful and supportive of all individuals. The creation of the GSA comes at a good time, said Campbell, noting that acceptance seems to come naturally to young students where older adults may have a harder time with things that they think are different.

“i think it’s really the perfect time for Sioux Lookout and the perfect time for our school,” said Campbell. “There are so many students that are accepting.”

Campbell said in her experience there is a sense of openness at QeDhS and within Sioux Lookout in general.

Rhonda MacRae, who also works in guidance at QeDhS, agreed that the atmosphere of QeDhS is supportive.

“We do have a high number of students who are exploring and wondering,” she said.

“There is excitement about the group.”

There are no downsides to fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance, said MacRae.

“What’s good for some is good for all,” she declared.

Event organizers introduced the GSA and the film to the crowd before the screening began.

Lil’ All Stars make slam dunk against bullyingShayla Bradley

Staff Writer

The Lil’ All Stars basketball team was in northwestern

Ontario recently as part of its cross-country tour, taking an anti-bullying message to schools and communities. The small and mighty trio were slated to take their basketball

skills and presentation on acceptance to Frenchman’s head, Kejick Bay, Deer Lake, and north Spirit Lake.

“We go to different schools all across Canada talking to students about teasing and bullying, the harmful effects,” said team member Farmer Pete.

“us, you see visually, you know we’ve been teased and bullied – and we still get it. We know how bad it is in schools now… the new thing is cyber bullying, people hiding behind the computer to do it.”

The team works to break down barriers with the goal of

preventing teasing and bullying altogether.

“We like to talk to students at a young age to see if we can try and stop it,” said Pete.

“We give them a message and we tell them stories of our personal stuff. We get them to ask questions and a lot of the time they tell us that

they’ve been bullied, and we hear their stories.”

After presenting to students, the team shows off their moves on the court.

“We put on a little comedy game of basketball with the teachers and students, so it ends in a positive way, a fun way,” Pete

explained. “They have fun doing it with someone who is actually different than them.”

The reception from northwestern Ontario has been amazing, said team member Jenna Cassidy.

“it’s been awesome,” she said.

A COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS PROGRAM

ADOPT – A – FAMILYYes, the holiday season is upon us once more. For most, this season is filled with joy, love, family and holiday treats. However, there are many who do not have the same fortune and for them Christmas is a difficult and sometimes painful time of year, but you can help.

Each year, many women who stay at First Step Women’s Shelter decide to break free from lives of violence and abuse. They decide that they want something better, that their children deserve something better. These women struggle with many obstacles, and we would like to invite you to join us in making Christmas a joyous time for these families.

The “Adopt A Family” program matches a sponsor with a woman and her children who have left the Shelter and are now living in our community, free from violence. The sponsor assists by providing the family with gifts and donations. The Shelter will provide the sponsor with a “Wish List” to assist with the shopping.

This is our 19th year of matching women and children in need with generous community members, families, businesses and organizations. We have over 20families who need to be adopted this year. We hope that you will be able to gain the true meaning of Christmas this year by helping someone less fortunate.

For those who are unable to sponsor a family but would like to make a contribution, donations will be gratefully accepted at the Shelter and then matched with a family in need or with the women and children who, due to violent home situations, are forced to spend their Christmas at the Shelter. We would also gratefully accept donations of non-perishable food and gift certificates. Income tax receipts will be issued for any monetary donations.

If you are interested in participating, or would like more information, please contact Laura at 737-1438.

Sioux Lookout Community Museum receives awardTim Brody

aSSoCiate editor

The Sioux Lookout C o m m u n i t y Museum has

been recognized by the Ontario Museum Association with their Award of excellence in Publications for the museum’s mobile app.

The mobile application, released in August 2013, was designed by developers Tristan interactive (now Acoustiguide Mobile) working with the municipal culture division staff.

A press release issued by the municipality

explains, “it was created during a period when the museum did not have a permanent home; its primary purpose was to ensure that people in Sioux Lookout (and throughout the world) would continue to have access to the collections during this

time of transition for the museum. now that the Museum is located in the Sioux Lookout heritage Railway Station, the app will be used to complement the physical museum experience, while still providing access to the collections for people who are not able to visit.”

users can view high-definition photographs of museum artefacts and zoom in on them for greater detail. A text description accompanies each artefact.

The municipality explained, “The app also allows users to save

their favourite stops for future reference, and to share app content by email or through social media.”

According to the Ontario Museum Association, “The Sioux Lookout Community Museum’s (SLCM) mobile app project is a great example of a small community museum leveraging scarce resources and using cutting-edge technology to stay relevant and to engage new demographics (in particular, youth) in its community. The [app] is beautiful, intuitive

to navigate, and it is the first of its kind among museums in northwestern Ontario. The app has already helped the Museum to reach far beyond the boundaries of Sioux Lookout, a culturally and economically vibrant town of approximately 5500 people.”

The Sioux Lookout Community Museum’s mobile app is available free for Apple and Android devices in Apple’s App Store and through Google Play.

Own a piece of local theatre history with silent auction

Shayla BradleyStaff Writer

ART and theatre lovers, here is your chance

to take home an original painting and support the northern Lights Community Theatre group.

“For the month of november leading up to the current show, which is called Opening night… we are doing a silent auction,” shared northern Lights

Community Theatre co-chair Greg Link.

northern Lights Community Theatre asked local artist hana Beitl to replicate paintings done by Jackson Pollock and edward hopper, used as part of the set during their first production, On temporary Loan. These are the paintings which are up for auction.

Beitl selected hopper’s The Long

Leg, which she began painting first. She said the subject matter, featuring a water surface and open sky, presented the opportunity to play with constructing the visual space and its contributing elements.

When The Long Leg was almost done, Beitl moved onto replicating Pollock’s Stenographic, which had a bit of all of Beitl’s favourites – painting, drawing, abstraction, flow, experimentation,

and jazz.Beitl went back and

forth on each painting until they were complete. Both paintings took about a month to finish. She noted that replicas of original paintings can never be copies, as there is no way to make an exact reproduction, hence the titles of her works, After Pollock and After hopper.

The silent auction began november 1 and will close at 4:30 p.m. on november 26. Bidding and viewing is taking place at Anchor Art, located at 88 ½ Front Street. The winning bidders will be announced on the opening night of Opening night, at 7:30 p.m. november 27 at Queen elizabeth District high School.

All proceeds will support northern Lights Community Theatre endeavours.

“Shows are expensive,”

said Link. “it’s things like rights to the shows, construction of sets, purchasing equipment… costumes, publicity, anything that goes into a show.”

Link said bidders can

drop in, make a bid, then come back and check if someone has outbid them.

“it’s a fun way for the community to take a piece of theatre history,” he said.

Hana Beitl’s artwork is on display and available for bidding at Anchor Art.

Sacred Heart School encourages students to be FAREShayla Bradley

Staff Writer

SACReD heart School has a new catchphrase, made

to help students be the best they can be.

“We’re talking about our new slogan for the school, which is FARe. F is faith, A is acceptance, R is respect and e is empathy,” explained Grade 8 student Andrew McKenzie at a school event designed to

spread the meaning of FARe across the student population.

Jill Faron, child and youth worker at Sacred heart, explained that FARe can teach students how to be “responsible for their actions, and be better students and role models.”

The hope is that students will use the phrase to deal with conflicts and bullying, making for a stronger,

safer school. every time they encounter an issue, they are encouraged to ask themselves if the situation is FARe – are they demonstrating faith, acceptance, respect, and empathy, and how would God see their actions?

To educate younger students about the slogan and its meaning, Grade 8 students took kids through a variety of games and challenges October 5, from navigating a blindfolded maze to colouring. each activity demonstrated an element of FARe.

“We’re all in separate groups and we’re talking a little bit about it, then we play a game about it, and go through the next group,” said McKenzie. “We’re really teaching the younger kids what FARe means.”

Joel Kulchyski, another Grade 8 student, said the goal of the day was explaining the slogan to the younger kids through fun and play.

naomi Seamark, also in Grade 8, said school administrators are looking to the school’s oldest students to model the concept of FARe.

“They want us to reflect on what it means, so it’s important for the smaller grades to know what it is,” she said.

Being a role model for younger kids, said Seamark, is all about “doing stuff that they could look up to when they get into our position.”

Kulchyski and Seamark agreed that faith, acceptance, empathy, and respect are all equally important.

FARe, in Seamark’s words, is “generally caring about people and thinking of them.”

“Respect is one of the number one rules of this school,” said McKenzie. “Faith, i have faith in a lot of kids and adults in this school… acceptance, i accept things that i have in common or i have different than others.”

Faron said she has already noticed Sacred heart students using FARe to navigate their school days.

Older Sacred Heart students led younger grades through activities they designed to share the school’s new motto.

Chamber of Commerce preparing to deliver customer service training program

Tim BrodyaSSoCiate editor

The Sioux Lookout Chamber of Commerce plans

to work with local businesses to help them improve their customer service practices.

To that end, they have hired Tiana Korobanik as their Customer Service Training Coordinator.

Korobanik, a local woman, has returned to town after attending school in Southern Ontario where she studied business administration and business management.

“i came back for the Blueberry Festival and i saw there was an opening for the event coordinator position and i applied for that. i came in for an interview and they let me know the customer service training coordinator was an option as well.

“i went back to Sarnia where i was living at the time and they asked me if i wanted the position. i thought, why not? Sioux Lookout is my home and it would be great to come back and see familiar faces and take on this new

position. it’s exciting,” she said.

Korobanik added, “it gives me an opportunity to work with the chamber and get to know the local business owners and work with them and encourage local shopping in the

community. i want to help out as much as i can.”

She explained the customer service training program will take place in local businesses, rather than local businesses sending people out to

receive training. She said the aim of the

program is to help local businesses with some constructive criticism, not slap them on the wrists.

Korobanik is inviting local businesses to an open house information session

at the Travel information Centre november 13 from 4-7 p.m.

The program will initially reach out to chamber businesses, however any interested businesses can attend.

Korobanik will

introduce herself to business representatives at the information session and provide them with more information on the customer service training program.

Korobanik can be contacted at 737-1937.

Hudson snowmobilers appear in American Snowmobiler MagazineTim Brody

aSSoCiate editor

A hudson man whose love of snowmobi l ing

is well known in the community is hoping a photograph

of his snowmobiling family will attract more attention to the snowmobiling opportunities Sioux Lookout and hudson offer.

“We went last March to Glacier house in

Revelstoke, BC, my son (Cam) and dad (Dave) and i, three generations of snowmobilers. We spent five days out there. On the last day we thought we would try to get a family photo taken. Ken Schultz and his son (Richard) came, as well as Rick Angeconeb and Billy Kejick. There was a bit of a group of us,” Mike Starratt explained.

“i ended up sending it to American Snowmobiler who published it,” Starratt said.

This was his first time

having a photo published in the magazine, an exciting experience, he said.

“i want to create more awareness about snowmobiling around here.”

“it’s win-win for everyone. it helps the club out. it helps our town out,” he added.

Asked what snowmobiling in the Sioux Lookout area is like, he responded, “it’s the freedom and the beauty of the lakes i guess. We have a snowmobiling paradise.”

Starratt runs a houseboat business in hudson and said more and more of his visitors are asking about coming up in the winter.

With snow starting to fall more frequently in Sioux Lookout, signaling the onset of winter, Starratt said he is excited

about the upcoming snowmobile season.

“i actually took a sled outside yesterday, put a Ski-Doo suit on, and i got my wife Andrea to take a few pictures of me and i titled it Waiting for Snow and i sent it to my son who is at college.”

Mike Starratt, left, with son Cam and father Dave in the photo published by American Snowmobiler Magazine.
