Tim BrodyAssociAte editor
Sioux Lookout oPP are asking for the public’s help
following recent incidents of mischief and vandalism in the community.
on July 14 flowers at Roy Lane Boutique were destroyed.
on July 18 garbage cans and flower pots were overturned and damaged on Front Street. Police also received reports that a group of people was entering vehicles on Ethel Street. Later that day it was reported that two vehicles parked on South Street had been entered and one vehicle parked on Queen Street
was damaged. on July 23 police were
informed that the concrete benches at the town beach were continually being pushed over and that this had been occurring for approximately three weeks. Police were also notified that day that the two signs on the CN bridge had been damaged.
Staff Sergeant Nathan Schmidt stated, “As citizens, if you notice something suspicious or observe people vandalizing property it is important to contact the police or Crime Stoppers as this information could assist in solving these crimes.”
Anyone who can assist police in their investigations
International dinner celebrates end of wilderness canoe trip
Geoff ShieldsstAff Writer
St. Andrew’s united Church Hall was a hive of activity when the Rotary
Club of Sioux Lookout held a farewell dinner to mark the final stage of their annual wilderness canoe trip last tuesday evening.
For the past 20 years the club has been holding the event which invites youth from all over the world to experience the enjoyment of canoeing and camping in the Canadian bush for a short period of time.
this year’s international Camp ran from July 9 to 23.
the 15 young people, Judith Allen (England), Pierre Bataille (France), Lisa Gocking (Germany), Riky Gomiero, Allessandra Sabaini,
Marco Saibene (italy), Lukas Kurzthaler (Austria), Joakim Licht (Denmark), Eva Pruchova (Czech Republic), Nicolas Rooryck (Belgium), Jaime Sanza olaizola (Spain), Aleksander Skworz (Poland ), Daniel Sorato (Brazil ), Lyubomira tanchovska (Bulgaria) and Kyle Durante from Sioux Lookout spent two weeks, which included two training days, camping and paddling through a series of lakes and portages north of Sioux Lookout, aided by Rotary and non-Rotary volunteers.
Student Daniel Sorato who comes from Campe Grande in Brazil shared his experience. “it was a 200 kilometers canoe and camping trip. We stayed for seven days at Savant Lake and spent the rest of the time
travelling around. i really liked it because it’s a new cultural experience for me. i have been here for 14 days and i go back tomorrow. two days were spent in training learning how to paddle. Canoeing is hard work, but i like it,” he said.
the evening dinner had been prepared by the young people and the 57 Rotary members and friends who attended were treated to a variety of international dishes which catered to all tastes.
Susan Barclay, Chair of the program opened the evening by thanking every one for coming, with special thanks extended to the many volunteers, host families and business people who donated their time, expertise
Waterfront wonderWarmer weather descended upon Sioux Lookout last week bringing people outside to enjoy all that a Sioux Lookout summer has to offer, including the area’s natural beauty, which can be found in abundance.

Memorial donationthis summer a group
of students from Queen Elizabeth District High School made a generous contribution to the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre Foundation as a touching tribute to a pair of former students. With their annual Christmas fundraising activities, the “Students Sandwich Society” raised over $1100 in eight days.

at the age of four months. Joseph was the only child of Natasha Sakchekapo-Lalande and Lorne Davis, both of whom are alumni of Queen Elizabeth. Natasha is also a former member of the Sandwich
Society. the donation will contribute to the Janelle Wesley Room, which serves as a gathering place for children and their families within SLMHC. thank you to the Student Sandwich Society, as well as all

Pimples and ponytailsLast Wednesday i had
a letdown, a moment of disappointment.
i was so excited earlier in the week when i felt a little lump on my chin! “Woohoo,” i shouted to myself as i felt the tiny pimple. “Holy smackers, is that ever cool!”
As a teenager i was no stranger to pimples, but i never sprouted crops of them like some friends who could grow pimples like zucchinis in a Doukhobor farmer’s garden.
Now i’m 70 years old and it seems like growing a pimple ought to be an accomplishment worth celebrating. Don’t ask why. it’s hard to explain.
Recently i decided to grow a ponytail. i’ve never had one. Never wanted one. But last spring i visited a long-
time friend who is a couple years older than i am and who i hadn’t seen for more than a decade. During that time his hair turned pure white and he wore it in a ponytail. People, friends of his, we met in a cafe called him “the Silver Wolf.”
Last Wednesday morning i called my mother. i thought she’d be interested to hear about my pimple.
First, though, after exchanging our usual greetings and pleasantries i decided to mention my ponytail. it’s not really a ponytail, yet, because it isn’t long enough and i haven’t tied or rubber banded it back. But it’s an idea and it’s getting close, so i mentioned it, casually...
My mother is not the silent type, so the dead air in the phone seemed
pretty loud as i awaited her charmed delight. i could hardly sit still, anticipating her glee.
Eventually, it came... a long, drawn out, gruff, “Why?”
“Well, i’ve never had one...”
Ma’s clever enough to know when i’ve got her beat, so she changed the subject.
“Do you ever watch golf on television?” she asked.
“No.”“there’s a guy on
there,” Ma continued, “who wears a ponytail. And he smokes cigars (another of my little pleasures that she thoroughly disapproves). i can’t bear to watch him. i think he’s disgusting.”
At that moment i was pretty tickled that we had changed the subject away from me and my ponytail. And just to be sure we didn’t regress i decided to hold my pimple news until the next time we talk. i didn’t really feel like discussing tiger
Woods and his chin eruptions.
it was only after we had hung up after a nice, long mom and son discussion that my disappointment set in. i got to musing and
rubbing my tiny chin bump, which seemed to feel sore and irritated, so i checked it out in the bathroom mirror.
it wasn’t a pimple after all. it was a damn mosquito bite.

and donations to enable the camp to proceed.
She then introduced special guests Pat Chernesky, Rotary District Governor for District 5550 from the Rotary Club of Nipawin, Saskatchewan and Sioux Lookout Mayor Dennis Leney.
Chernesky thanked all the people who
participated in the event and spoke about how Rotary sponsors many youth orientated activities all over the world. “i am honored to be here and i would like to say thank you so much, everyone, for coming and helping,” she said.
Mayor Leney concurred, “this is my third year for being
included. i would like to thank all the parents that take in the Rotary kids for their efforts and extend a warm welcome to Sioux Lookout to all our visitors.”
Barclay and Rotary President Clifford Mushquash then took the floor to present certificates to all the trip leaders and helpers, both Rotarians and friends, followed by a thank you acknowledgement to the local business people who contributed by way of donations such as food to
the trip.The final presentations
of the evening were to the 15 canoeists. Each received a certificate which showed the distances they travelled, the number of portages they hiked, and the names of the lakes they visited.
Afterward Chernesky commented, “this is my first visit to Sioux Lookout and we are very proud that District 5550 is able to bring people from around the world to participate in the international Camp. Rotary is instrumental in
bringing together people from different cultures and promoting world peace and understanding. We focus on many youth programs, building youth leadership, and this is one of many programs because youth are our future.”
She added, “tonight was a great turnout, wonderful food, and i am very happy to be here. i am proud that someone from our district has hosted this.”
Mushquash shared, “the participants are here as part of an international youth camp. our camp is one of 80 throughout the world and it’s only one of three in North America.
“these camps are sponsored by Rotary. one of the participants, Pierre-Emmanuel Battaille, was our inbound exchange student. He arrived in August 2013 and he will be leaving next week. the others were here just for this 14 day trip.”
two of the participants in the wilderness excursion spoke about their experiences.
“i really enjoyed it. i had no expectations before i came and it was just so amazing. Nice people, beautiful nature, and i made friends from all over the world,” Lisa Gocking from Germany explained.

tHE Sioux Banshees tournament team s t e a m r o l l e d
their way to victory July 19 and 20 at a baseball tournament in ignace.
twelve teams
competed in the tournament with the Sioux Lookout team cruising to their first ever A side championship win.
team co-coach Derrick Greene shared, “We played great. We never lost a game.”
the Sioux Banshees
posted 10-0, 20-1, 21-14 and 23-19 wins before going on to beat tony’s tunas from Dryden 11-5 in the final.
“For probably the last five years we’ve lost in the A or B (side final) but this was the first time we’ve won,”
Greene said.He said his team was
relaxed and had good luck in the opponents it drew.
“it was a fun weekend. We weren’t really worried whether we were going to
win the tournament or not. it just kind of worked out that way.
Shawn Potter proposed to his girlfriend Dina Zoccole that Saturday night. We never have seemed to be able to pull
it together on Sunday. it seemed like good karma. these are two of our teammates and one, he proposed to her and two, she accepted. it seemed to set things in our favour,” he concluded.

Marcus John Trout was called to his Heavenly
Home on July 9th, 2014 at
the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg with family by his side. Marcus is survived by his parents, Anthony Trout and Shera Wesley, his siblings, Bradley, Emma, and Gunner; his grandparents, Elvis & Dorothy Trout, and John & Donna Wesley.
Marcus was born on his grandmother Donna’s birthday, September 13, 2000. Marcus started suffering from seizures when he was six months old, this was the beginning of many trips to the hospital, and to specialists. Marcus was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder then a few years later with
Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy of Infancy, otherwise known as Dravet Syndrome.
Despite his illness, Marcus lived a vibrant life. He had a passion for the game of hockey. He would constantly be seen carrying a stick around, he loved the arena atmosphere and could sit there, clapping and cheering for both teams - he was a dedicated hockey fan. He had a special place at the Lac Seul Arena - where he would sit in his spot, watch a game, or hockey practices, or just watch the Zamboni drivers clean the ice.
Marcus has been a student at Sioux Mountain Public School, he loved school and looked forward to attending everyday. His grandmother Donna also served as Marcus’ bus driver since he was 2 years old - as Marcus first attended Norah Love Children’s Centre, then Sioux Mountain Children’s Centre. Marcus was also involved with Child Care Resources where he received one-on-one Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) Therapy - he thrived in this environment where he learned to communicate with Picture
Exchange Communication System (PECS).
Marcus was a typical older brother to Bradley and Emma; he found enjoyment in bugging them and teasing them. When they would cry, Marcus had a special way to mimic them and this would make them more upset. He loved his brother and sister very much, he was gentle to them. And despite his uncanny strength, he never used it to hurt them or anyone else. Marcus’ youngest brother, Gunner was born three days after Marcus was granted his angel wings.
Marcus enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, he loved to visit family and attend family gatherings, play outdoors, go for swims, have bubble baths, play with puzzles, and most of all - head out to the arena.
In his short life, Marcus impacted many people. He connected an entire community with his loving, gentle and trusting spirit. He didn’t allow the labels of Autism or Dravet define who he was as a person. Marcus won over many hearts with his perfect smile. He was a blessing from God. Heavens Very Special Child.

2014 SPIRIT WALKSFor the past several years the Genealogical Society has presented spirit walks during the Blueberry Festival. These walks introduce the community and visitors to the lives of the pioneers of Sioux Lookout. To commemorate the beginning of World War I and the many brave men and women who fought in this war, this year’s spirit walks will highlight the lives of Sioux Lookout’s heroes who took part in this war.
There will be two walks: the first held on Tuesday, August 5 at 7 p.m. and the second on Thursday, August 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the local cemetery. We look forward to seeing everyone there.
We will be highlighting the lives of the following:
Tuesday, Aug. 5 Thursday, Aug. 7 7 p.m. 11.00 a.m.
Donald Rorke William Kidd Harold Baverstock Rod Brunton Laughlan Mann J. G. Maxwell Tony Fraulette E. B. Wilson Laughlin Mann John B. Fenelon John Uren H. Jackson Paul Garten Ernie Bower Joseph Keane Reverend Seviers Frank Barager W. E. Carson

Gymnastics campMike Lang of the Thunder Bay Gymnastics Club, a veteran coach of 41 years, was in Sioux Lookout last week to hold his annual summer gymnastics camp for gymnasts in the Sioux Lookout Gymnastics Club.
Twenty-five children, ranging in age from three to 15 took part in the week-long camp, learning new skills, perfecting current ones, and overall, having a fun time with Coach Mike.
