Tips to stay safe when heading out onto the ice this springTim Brody

AssociAte editor

THe Ministry of Natural Resources is reminding

anglers to check local ice conditions before heading onto the ice to fish.

The Ministry asks people to remember that ice conditions can be deceptive and variable.

The ministry provides the following advice to help people stay safe.

ice does not freeze at a uniform thickness across most lakes and rivers. This can be hazardous at the start of the winter season when near-shore ice is often much thicker and safer than ice further out. Check thickness

regularly with a spud bar or auger as you move further out on the ice.

Not all ice is created equal. ice that has formed over flowing water, springs, pressure cracks, old ice holes or around the mouths of rivers and streams can be weaker than surrounding ice.

Clear blue ice is the

strongest. White or opaque ice is much weaker. ice that has a honeycombed look, common during thaws or in the spring, should be avoided.

Travelling on frozen lakes or rivers with snowmobiles or vehicles can be dangerous and precautions must be taken. At least 20 centimeters

(eight inches) of clear blue ice is required for snowmobiles and 30 centimeters (12 inches) or more is needed for most light vehicles. This thickness should be doubled if the ice is white or opaque.

Heavy snow on a frozen lake or river can insulate the ice below and slow the freezing process.

People are asked before venturing out to check ice conditions with other anglers, let others know where you’re planning to fish and when you plan to return, finally appropriate clothing and equipment are critical to safety and comfort. Many anglers wear flotation suits and carry a set of ice picks.

New business opens in Sioux LookoutGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

LAST Saturday morning saw the official opening

of Anchor Art, a new business venture jointly owned by Beth McKinlay and Andrew Gottschlich. The shop, which is located in the front section of the A-Frame Art Gallery, sells books, artwork and a large variety of unique gifts and toys.

McKinlay, co-owner who is married to Gottschlich, spoke about

how the idea originated, “it started with a dialogue i had with gallery owner Donna Giles who had been considering changing the format of the A-Frame. She came to me to discuss with Andrew and i the possibility of making the gallery space a place where we could present books, gifts and local art.” She added, “What we are offering is a unique place where you can purchase a variety of books and gifts such as art journals, kid’s toys that engage them

and jewellery amongst other items.

“We place a great emphasis on finding cool things close to home concentrating mainly on Canadian authors and artifacts.”

McKinlay concluded, “What we have at present is an idea which we would like to see evolve through input from our community. if there are books you are looking for let us know and we will do our utmost to find them for you. At present we are still looking

for local artisans with their work, there are so many talented people in Sioux Lookout and we would like the opportunity to promote them.”

Giles owner of A-Frame Custom Framing commented, “My husband Chris and i have enjoyed

all the artwork that we have been part of in the gallery over the last seven years and right now we welcome Anchor Art as well as Blue earth Photography Studio and sharing the space with them to continue promoting creative arts in Sioux Lookout.”

Tim Hortons’ first year celebration.

Salmon cakes or peanut butter cookies?

Here are some little salmon cakes i made for supper a while back. i was going to describe them as similar to crab cakes, but they are not the least bit similar to crab cakes when i think about it (except they are both smallish and kind of round).

i have been trying not to post as many food pictures as i used to - but these are such tasty and pretty little gremlins that i just felt the urge to sneak them in.

Do you remember Clippy, the little paper clip with big eyes that used to dance onto your computer screen like a Vaudeville performer whenever you started to type a Word document? With the first keystroke

he’d blow a big conversation balloon out of his face asking, “Do you want to type a letter?”

i have one of those guardian characters, shaped like a measuring spoon, living in my head. Whenever i start to mix ingredients for something she jumps onto my shoulder and whispers, seductively, “Want to add some spice to this?”

it’s then that my recipe goes all to hell.

i can cook for you but i can’t give you a recipe the same way twice.

Here’s a scenario of my little salmon cakes, guided by the rules that they must taste good (or at least interesting), and be as close to zero calories, carbohydrates, and sugar as possible.

i started this batch

with mashed cauliflower (softened by boiling), shredded cheddar cheese, Panko bread crumbs, an egg, one or two cans of salmon, then added worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, dry mustard, some salt, pepper, onion powder, and Old Bay seasoning.

After mixing everything up i put a heaping tablespoonful for each cake onto a very lightly oiled cast iron griddle pan, formed them into cookie shapes using a

spatula, then baked at 450 for a few minutes (12 minutes seemed about right), took the pan out of the oven and gently flipped the patties and put them back in the oven for another three or four minutes.

Another rule: if any break during the transfer from pan to dish the cook gets to eat them so as not to ruin the picture he’s about to take.

These make nice appetizers. i freeze leftovers for future use,

including eating cold during coffee break, during which time my friends think i’m having peanut butter cookies (so nobody knows i’m on a sissy diet).

Last evening when Mary saw this batch she commented that they looked like little pancakes. immediately my sweet little measuring spoon siren jumped onto my shoulder and cooed, “Sunday morning at camp. Surprise her!”

Precautions against attracting spring bearsTim Brody

AssociAte editor

THe government of Ontario and the Ontario

Provincial Police (OPP) are asking people to take precautions this spring to prevent attracting black bears as they emerge from hibernation.

A government press release shares, “The potential for human-bear conflicts increases when there is little natural food available for bears. if this happens, black bears will search for other

food sources, such as garbage and bird feed, which can draw bears to populated areas.”

The following tips were provided to help people minimize the chances of attracting bears: store garbage in waste containers with tight-fitting lids, put out garbage only on the morning of pickup, put away bird feeders, seed, suet and nectar also attract bears, pick fruits and berries as they ripen – don’t let them rot on the ground, clean outdoor

barbecue grills after each use, including the grease trap underneath. Bears will be drawn by smells from great distances, including grease and food residue on grills.

People are advised that bears that enter a populated area aren’t necessarily a threat to public safety. Public safety, it is advised, is at risk when a bear poses an immediate threat to your safety.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and OPP have agreed on the roles and responsibilities

for both organizations to help the public understand which organization to contact when they encounter a bear.

“if a bear is posing an immediate threat to public safety by exhibiting threatening or aggressive behavior, call 911 or your local police. At the request of police, during daylight hours the Ministry of Natural Resources will respond to emergency situations to assist. For non-emergencies, the Ministry of Natural Resources

operates the toll-free, 24/7 Bear Reporting Line (1-866-514-2327) and the Bear Wise website to provide the public with information and advice,” states the press release.

“Nuisance bears are a very serious public safety concern, and while our government is taking steps to address this issue, it is also important for Ontarians to do their part in helping to minimize bear attractants. Taking simple steps to properly store garbage will help keep bears out of our neighbourhoods,” shared David Orazietti, Minister of Natural Resources.

“i urge Ontarians to

take all necessary steps to reduce their interactions with bears. if there is an immediate threat to public safety from a bear, the OPP will respond in our jurisdiction to protect our citizens with the assistance of the Ministry of Natural Resources,” concluded Vince Hawkes, Commissioner, Ontario Provincial Police.

Record snowfall blankets Sioux Lookout, causes closures

Tim BrodyAssociAte editor

SiOux Lookout set a new record for most snowfall

in a 24 hour period and recorded the greatest amount of snowfall in the region when a winter storm blew in last week.

David Rodgers, Meteorologist with environment Canada said between March 31 and April 1 Sioux Lookout accumulated 55 centimeters of snowfall. Forty-seven centimeters of that fell on April 1, setting a new daily snowfall record

for the community, eclipsing the previous snowfall record of 40.6 centimeters set in 1941.

The record snowfall resulted in school bus cancellations both March 31 and April 1.

On April 1 Sioux Mountain Public School,

Sacred Heart School and Queen elizabeth District High School were closed as was the

Confederation College Sioux Lookout campus.

Several businesses and organizations were

also closed that day along with all municipal child care centres in Sioux Lookout.

Lodge 140 for the international Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (iAM&AW), Bearskin Airlines has provided its entire 11 unionized aircraft maintenance staff at Sioux Lookout with temporary layoff notices which took effect at the end of the day April 1.

“As far as the duration, at this point the company doesn’t have a set date. We’re hopeful it will be by the end of the year, hopefully the fall, maybe only six months,” he said. “These types of lay-offs have also affected the Bearskin pilots as well. My understanding

is there are no more Bearskin pilots stationed out of Sioux Lookout,” he added.

He advised that all scheduled maintenance will now be performed at the Thunder Bay maintenance base.

Permanent layoffs were also issued for all maintenance employees (four) at the Kitchener/Waterloo airport along with all maintenance employees (six) at the Winnipeg airport.

“Furthermore, the company has announced they will be closing down their engine overhaul facility in Thunder Bay, contracting out that work, resulting in about four more

permanent layoffs. The iAM&AW is grieving this decision and will do everything in its power to preserve these good paying jobs and prevent them from being contracted out to a cheap non-unionized shop,” Corrado said.

Asked about the layoffs in Sioux Lookout Hell responded, “i’m able to tell you that throughout our system there have been some staff that have been impacted as a result of termination of service in a few markets and reduction in service in other markets. in terms of how many people or where those people are located we’re really not talking about

the specifics other than we will acknowledge it has impacted some of our staff across

our network.”Hell concluded by

stating, “i think that generally the service has been enhanced in Sioux Lookout and i think the other thing to keep in mind is that we’ve rationalized

our service a couple times over our history and each time we’ve done it, it’s preceded a period of growth. So we’re looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead for Bearskin Airlines.”

There have been some staff that have been impacted

The Spin Cycle Show comes to Sioux LookoutGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

THe 2013/2014 Kids Kaleidoscope season had its

finale last Thursday evening. A large crowd of toddlers with their parents were present at the Queen elizabeth District High School gymnasium to enjoy a show that combined elements of juggling, puppetry, stilt-walking and vaudeville comedy.

Spin Cycle combines the talents of Greg Tarlin, a Canadian Juggling Champion who astounds audiences with his juggling act, yo-yo expertise, balancing on unicycles and plate spinning. He has performed in Japan, Korea, at the North Pole for Canada’s military, coast to coast in Canada, the uSA and aboard cruise ships.

Kristi Heath has performed with the Cirque du Soleil and performed as a soloist in Japan, Korea, europe, New Zealand, Singapore and coast to coast in Canada and the uS. Her contribution to the act includes ballroom dancing with two life size puppets, a bell ringing routine with the help of members of the audience and a ballet performed on stilts.

Dorothy Broderick, a member of the Kids Kaleidoscope Committee, opened the evening by thanking the sponsors of the event, QeDHS and the audience for attending after which the evening entertainment commenced.

The show ran for an hour and opened with some skilled juggling from Tarlin who was assisted by two young members of the audience. This was followed by a comedy dance routine with Heath manipulating two life size puppets that had the youngsters in the crowd screaming with laughter. She then brought on six children and did a bell ringing routine, each bell having a different pitch as they played tunes. Routines utilized a banana, a small body puppet and Tarlin performing tricks with a yo-yo. The climax of the show was Heath being helped onto a pair

of stilts by three adult male members of the audience, then donning a large ballet costume. She then proceeded to perform a dance routine ably assisted by one of the audience members on stage who she decorated with a tutu to give him a feeling for the role he was performing. The evening ended with a vigorous round of applause from the crowd.

Tarlin commented on the evening, “it was fun. The audience was enthusiastic and had fun participating.

“We have enjoyed our time in Sioux Lookout, but it was too short, we only had two days here and we wish it could have been longer.” Heath thought, “The audience was great, very responsive and well behaved. Sioux Lookout is a treat. We live in downtown Toronto so we appreciate the pace here

and being surrounded by nature.”

Audience response was positive Beth Dasno said, “it was really dynamic and great. Lots of talent.” Rikki Bourke thought, “it was excellent. Funny for the kids, entertaining for the adults and we are looking forward to the next season.”

Karla Madsen who was there with her son Hunter added, “i thought it was very entertaining. it kept

the kids interested and it was a fun activity to do as a family.” Broderick shared, “i thought it was a great show and they did a good job. i think the kids really enjoyed themselves especially when their dads were up there on stage.”

The 2014/2015 season of Kids Kaleidoscope will open on October 23 with a presentation of Where the Wild Things Are.

Quoquat, speeches began.Sioux Lookout

Mayor Dennis Leney led things off following the announcement a new high school would be built in the community by offering

congratulations.“You can rest assured

Sean,” he told KPDSB Director of education Sean Monteith, “That my council and my staff will work diligently with you to make sure this becomes a reality.”

Confederation College President Jim Madder shared, “This announcement allows us to combine the college inside the high school so it is a tremendous announcement for the college and it allows

us to expand our programing and work together in a number of different ways allowing you to start college before you’ve even finished high school.”

KPDSB Sioux Lookout Trustee Bob O’Donohue promised, “it’s going to be a state of the art high school.”

He said the process of arriving at the April 1 announcement at QeDHS was one years and years in the undertaking.

For years he told those assembled, building a new high school in Sioux Lookout or securing major renovations has been the school boards top priority.

“it’s going to help the entire north, not just the students living here in Sioux Lookout… i’m extremely excited…This is truly a tremendous day for Sioux Lookout,” he said.

QeDHS Principal Steve Poling commented, “every once in a while in life there is a time that something happens and you remember where you were. Remember today because today is a historical moment for our community and for the future of education in our area.”

He continued, “Our education community extends from Sioux Lookout to Lac Seul and north to Fort Severn. Our graduates are following many pathways all over the world working to

make it a better place for others. We are all proud of you as our grads and encourage you to continue to be a positive influence in the world.”

Poling also stated, “QeDHS was constructed 61 years ago. We are now being given a chance to plan for the next 60 years of education in Sioux Lookout and area. it’s an opportunity to move forward into the future.

As i’ve said many times to students, education prepares you for when opportunity knocks. Today, the door is open.”

He concluded by adding, “Our children deserve a great education

and we strive to help them achieve excellence. This new building will help us advance the work of creating an educational experience with caring and unconditional support creating a sense of belonging for all.”

Teachers John and Rhonda MacRae were also invited to speak.

Rhonda MacRae shared, “We promise to care for and educate your children well.”

She said the announcement of a new high school has put spring in the step of students and staff at the school and brought new energy and smiles.

John MacRae informed he had been

Confederation College President Jim Madder.

through a similar process at Pelican Falls First Nations High School and said the journey will have its challenges and rewards.

He encouraged students, staff and the community to persevere.

Fifth year student Alyssa Wiseman and Grade 10 student Drew Dumonski then took to the podium.

They spoke of the opportunities the new school will afford students and challenged

students attending the new school to keep the school’s spirit strong.

Traditional teacher Ralph Johnson, a community elder, was invited to speak and said it was a great honour to bless the occasion and this new endeavor.

Minister of education, Liz Sandals, said in a press release, “By continuing our support for new school buildings and renovations across Ontario, we are providing our children with better places to learn. This contributes to student success in school and beyond and creates construction jobs in local communities like Sioux Lookout.”

Dave Penney, KPDSB Board Chair, also stated in a press release, “We have been trying for a number of years to obtain the funding for a new school and i, along with all of the trustees, are extremely pleased that the Board can now proceed with

a new high school in Sioux Lookout. Once completed, it will provide a top quality learning environment for all area students for years to come. The Board would like to thank all of the partners to the project and the Ministry which have made this long time dream become a reality.”

KPDSB Director of education Sean Monteith informed, “The one thing i think we need to make sure is very clear was that as wanting and deserving as the Qe project was, the partnerships with key partners was absolutely what put us over the top.”

The construction of a new high school in Sioux Lookout he said represents the aspirations of the entire organization.

“This is a watershed moment for us,” he said, adding the announcement represents a coming of age for the school board.

He told those gathered, “i assure you as the director of education we will build the very best school we can for you because the kids deserve nothing less.”

Monteith said he learned about a month ago the Ontario Ministry of education had approved funding for a new high school in Sioux Lookout in the amount of $24 million.

The KPDSB will contribute over $4 million to the project.

The total project cost is estimated to be more than $30 million.

Monteith said of the additional monies needed for the project, “i’m confident we will find those dollars. We’re not

downsizing the plan… We’re not going to make mistakes on this project. i think this is absolutely critical for the community to know, you get one shot to do something like this, to do it right, and we are going to do it right.”

The new high school in Sioux Lookout will be more than just a high school; it will be a campus, a community hub people mentioned during their presentations with several organizations leasing space in the building.

Confederation College’s Sioux Lookout campus will find a new home in the new high school with 7000 square feet of space being allocated for its use.

Lakehead university will have a couple of rooms to have a video and telepresence.

FIREFLY will find a home in the new high school bringing social and mental health counseling services.

The Toronto Hospital for Sick Children’s Motherisk Program will also have space in the building and will offer Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) diagnostic and support services.

The Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre will also have space in the building offering mental health services.

Both Monteith and O’Donohue said having the partners on board and the support of the Municipality of Sioux Lookout put the QeDHS project over the edge with the Ministry

of education.The new high school

will not be built on the grounds of the present QeDHS Monteith said, “The current location for Queen elizabeth District High School is completely inadequate, not in the sense of a property, but its inadequate to build a 100,000 square foot facility on site with the current school in operation, it just can’t happen.”

The current high school is about 66,000 square feet in size.

A few sites have been identified in town as possible sites for the new high school; however Monteith wasn’t at liberty to divulge which at this time.

He said the hope is to have designs completed and put out requests for proposals for construction of the new school by the end of this year.

Monteith estimates it will be about three years until the doors are flung wide of a newly built high school ready to receive its first students.

As plans for the new school come together, the high school’s name, mascot, school colours and sports team name may come under review.

“The key group we’re going to consult with on the design of this building will be the students. Yes there will be engineer and parent input put i will tell you we will be going to the students in probably a way we never have before,” Monteith said.

Municipality shows support for National Youth Arts WeekGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

THe Arts Network for Children and Youth (ANCY)

is a national non-profit community arts service organization.

it was founded in 1999 by a group of arts practitioners with a vision of sustainable arts programming for children and youth in communities across Canada. Since its inception it has actively promoted a National Youth Arts Week specifically designed to encourage creativity amongst Canadian youth.

For the past three years the Municipality of Sioux Lookout assisted by the Creative Arts Circle has actively encouraged local youngsters to participate in the project which runs from May 1 to 7.

Reilly Scott, arts and

culture coordinator spoke about the event, “The National Youth Arts Week is a Pan-Canadian initiative of the ANCY which is an organization based out of Toronto. it is held once a year usually in the first week in May and its goal is to inspire and promote the Arts and to encourage active youth participation.”

She added, “We really want to encourage any individuals in our community of all ages to participate, either by coordinating an event that they are positive about or getting involved with events that are already happening.”

Previous events in 2013 included, an open music night which was initiated by the youth centre. The Creative Arts Circle offered an arts workshop series called Making Circles hosted by

local photographers Brent Wesley and Adrienne Fox who ran an intro to photography workshop which was offered to youth. The Sioux Lookout Public Library also offered a crafts afternoon where kids could come and have access to art materials to create projects and the Municipal Day Care Centre’s participated as well by offering arts and craft sessions.

Scott shared, “i am lucky because last year i was able to be involved through my work with the Creative Arts Circle and this year with my role at the Municipality as the arts and culture coordinator i am able to be involved in the effort again.” She concluded, “i am so proud that Sioux Lookout is offering this opportunity and celebrating National Youth Arts Week as i feel

that it is so important that the arts are available and encouraged to our younger generation and to the community in general and i am very happy to be part of that.”

Last dance finale for 2013/2014 entertainment seriesGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

THe last in the sequence of p e r f o r m a n c e s

that were presented by the Sioux-Hudson entertainment Series for the year took place in the QeDHS gymnasium on the evening of April 5.

An audience of 102 consisting of both young and old were on hand to enjoy a fast paced exhibition of traditional

street dances which consisted of a fusion of seventies B-boying (Breakdancing) and Hip Hop professionally performed by the Bboyizm Dance Company from Gatineau, Quebec who introduced their latest production entitled Music Creates Opportunity. As a prequel, members of the troupe had made themselves available to put on two workshops

involving Grades 7-8 at Sioux Mountain Public School on April 4 to the enjoyment of the children who participated.

Bboyizm was founded in 2004 by top Canadian street dancer/choreographer Yvon “Crazy Smooth” Soglo whose vision is to promote and preserve the foundation, authenticity and vibrancy of street dancing by taking breakdancing to a higher level and bringing it to the stage.

The seven piece ensemble of four males and three females is Smooth along with el Houari “Wary the Warrior” Si Abdelkader, Mathieu “B-boy Strife” Biladeau, Rahime “NOSB” Gay-Labbe, Marie “B Girl Miss Marie” Benoit, Melissa

“Melly Mel” Flerangile and Julie “Julie Rock” Benoit each of whom brings their own unique expertise to the act.

The evening commenced with Alyson Martin, chairperson of the entertainment committee, who thanked all the people and businesses who sponsored the series and those who attended.

Then the show began.Although only an hour

it kept the audience’s attention as the troupe performed a number of traditional street dances that included Rocking, B-boying, House Dancing and Pantsula a street dance from Soweto South Africa, each consisting of high energy, well-coordinated rhythmic routines. The evening ended with a standing ovation from the crowd, after which

Smooth and four other members came back on stage to explain about their individual backgrounds, how they became part of Bboyizm and to answer questions from the audience.

Smooth spoke about what the group performs,

“Street dancing is a name they use to describe social dancing where people come together. it’s reacting to music, slow movements in the slow quick stop and rhythmic contact guiding each other to the next step.”

He added, “it’s really to show that everyone experiences things differently. We all hear the same but differently and that could be dark, very playful, happy the possibilities are endless. And you see that all those emotions are expressed when we come together as a group so we affect each other.”

He concluded, “it was lovely to meet the people from the community and i especially like to see how integrated the white and native people are in the town. i liked the fact that there were young, mid to old generations in the audience to share

the experience of live performance.”

Audience reaction was responsive Patti everson thought, “The dances were beautiful, all different and very inspiring.” Cameron Airlie was of the opinion that it was, “A really exciting performance.” While Linda Glena said, “it was marvelous. i didn’t know what to expect but i would go and see them again. This was well worth coming to.”

For Martin, “They were stunning, inspirational; it’s a performance that will not be soon forgotten. We are thankful they braved the storm to get here and we were all just blown away by their performance and form of artistic expression.”

She spoke about the forthcoming new entertainment series activities, “The next one should be starting at the beginning of fall. Sometime around the end of September, beginning of October. The committee is working on a line-up guaranteed to please all ages and we look forward to seeing you there.”

House Two boys winter carnival champs

Tim BrodyAssociAte editor

PeLiCAN Falls Centre held its annual Winter

Carnival beginning the weekend of March 22 after postponing it back in early February. The weather was perfect and students had a great time according to Winter Carnival organizer and House Two counsellor Fred VanderPloeg.

The House Nine girls won the annual snow sculpture competition with their Minion, while House 11 received the consolation prize for their Donkey Kong sculpture.

As well as the snow

sculpture event, houses competed against each other in the Six event Outdoor Challenge, going head-to-head in challenges like the canoe race, stilt-walking and the toboggan relay. Students were able to add points to their house’s total by competing in a wide variety of individual events ranging from nail-driving, floor hockey skills and arm wrestling to the Boggle, chess and rock, paper, scissors tournaments.

“We try to have something for everyone. Some of the individual events are pure athletic competitions, but we

have lots of other events going on as well, like foosball, Texas Hold’ em and the cribbage tourney. This year we added Mirror Ball to the list. You look into a hand mirror and throw tennis balls backwards over your shoulder at a target. it’s simple, fun and anyone can do it. everyone had a laugh trying and it sure wasn’t easy – i got one out of 15,” VanderPloeg said.

in the end, when all the points were tallied up, the House Two boys were declared the Winter Carnival champions for the second straight year.

“everyone really

has to pull together for a house to win the Winter Carnival. We didn’t have the winning snow sculpture, but still scored pretty well and we did really well in

the outdoor challenges. in the end, what put us over the top was the individual events. Rodney Day picked up four wins in four different events, while

Derek Kakekagumick, Nathan Sawanas, and Josh Muckle put another four points on the board and that was enough for us to win,” VanderPloeg concluded.

Illegal Night Hunt Costs Men Total of

$8,000Two residents of Slate

Falls First Nation were fined a total of $8000 for an illegal and unsafe night hunt.

Christopher J. Wabason

and Melvin Hudson were found guilty and fined $2500 each for hunting moose without a licence, hunting at night and possessing illegally killed wildlife. Wabason was fined $500 for having a loaded firearm

in a vehicle. Hudson was fined an additional $2500 for careless hunting. He is also required to complete the Ontario Hunter education Program. The rifles were seized and will be returned upon payment of the fines. The moose was seized and forfeited to the Crown.

The court heard that on October 1, 2011, a Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officer responded to a

night hunting complaint northeast of Sioux Lookout. The next morning, the officer found Wabason near the kill site with two loaded rifles and half of the moose in his vehicle. The officer determined that the men were hunting moose two hours after sunset when they came upon a moose standing on the Vermilion River Road. Hudson fired three shots at it from the road.

Justice of the Peace Daisy Hoppe heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sioux Lookout, on January 16, 2014. Hudson was later sentenced on March 20, 2014.

The ministry reminds hunters that they may only hunt from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. Hunting at night is illegal and dangerous. it is also against the law to shoot from, down or

across a public road, or to possess a loaded firearm in any vehicle or vessel, including aircraft, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and motorboats.

To report a natural resources violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll-free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

OFSAA wrestling 2014Thirty-two elite

wrestlers per weight class, dog eat dog, only the strong survive. OFSAA is the largest high school wrestling tournament in North America. Only the best from every region across Ontario earn a berth to this prestigious tournament. Alex Legros is one of these elite compiling an almost perfect season and earning his spot in one of the most formidable regions in Ontario. The tournament was held on March 5 and 6 in Brampton at the Powerade Centre. Ten mats and approximately 1000 wrestlers all vying for the honor of bringing home a medal, an

intimidating affair to say the least. The day before the competition Alex was five pounds under the weight limit of 141 pounds and could have easily made the weight class below. undersized; Alex’s path led him to the number one seed in the province for his first match which resulted in his first loss. Un-phased, the fierce competitor that he is, Alex bounced back dominating his second opponent 10-0. An impressive feat considering the tournament is comprised of only elite level wrestlers thus there are no easy matches. His next and final match was against the number

two seed. A wrestler that trains six days a week, four hours a day, both at his high school as well as the local university; a norm for both Southern Ontario, and Thunder Bay. This is a far stretch from the one to two practices a week Alex has become accustomed to. Alex, determined and unintimidated scored a takedown, and took the number two seed deep into the second round battling with every ounce of his being. Alex’s journey ended here with one of the most difficult draws in the most talent stacked weight class in the whole tournament. The small town kid made his mark and impressed many a coach and wrestler at the big show. One such coach asked him “Where the hell is Sioux Lookout? Man you got to be proud making it here doing what you did

competing at this level”. Coach ed Newman, who accompanied Alex to Brampton and cornered him, was equally impressed with Alex’s performance stating, “Alex wrestled with determination and tenacity. He represented Northwestern Ontario very well. it was an honor cornering him.”

Alex’s story is one of the underdog, against all odds, finding success at the highest level of competition. Coach Rob Sakamoto believes, “Wrestlers like Alex are a rare breed. He has so much potential. With access to the right training he could easily be a champion. What he has accomplished thus far is nothing short

of amazing”. Coach Sakamoto also feels that, “if Alex had a better draw; he could have easily placed in the top 10, maybe even 5th or 6th”. We are proud of you!

A special thank-you to Zack Hodder and Wasaya Airlines for their support!

Sadly our beloved Brother and Uncle Mikey left us

on Friday, March 28, 2014 at the age of 70 in the presence of his family at the Sioux Lookout hospital. He is survived by his sister Helen Nenka, and her two sons, his nephews, Johnny (Brenda) and Kevin (Christina). Mikey now joins in heaven his twin brother William “Billy” who predeceased him in 2010, as well as his older brother Steve (2006), brother in-law Mike (2006), and parents Annie (1999) & John (1959).

Michael Jack Bugera was born in Sioux Lookout on January 3, 1944 leading the

way for his twin brother Bill. Mikey spent all of his life in Sioux Lookout living both on Queen St. and Lakeshore Dr. as one of the “Bugera Boys” and did a variety of professions such as being a fishing guide, bait shop owner, caretaker, breadman, and most recently, as a guard at the local police station. Of all of these, being a fishing guide was probably his most rewarding as some of the American tourists he met became not just acquaintances but life long friends, including those making the trek to see him right up to his last days. He would take these friends and others, together with his

brothers and nephews, to his favorite place on earth, the Camp on Bindo Bay. It goes without saying that Mikey was never happier then when he was hunting and fishing at the Camp, smiling and laughing away.

Although always the perpetual bachelor and liking it that way, Mikey passed along everything that was special about Mikey to his two nephews, Johnny and Kevin, whom he treated as if they were his own sons; and for that, they are so grateful and honoured to have an Uncle like him.

Mikey was so proud to

be a lifetime 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and in appropriate fashion, prayers and funeral/internment occurred on April 3rd & 4th respectively with Father Mike Mahoney of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiating.

His family would like to thank his pallbearers (Terry Korbanik, Peter Barclay, Rob Grenier, Nelson Nenka, Don Rusnak, & Patrick Trotter); his honorary pallbearers (Mike Harris, Mark Saltel, Bob Butterfield, Dan Jacobson, Pat Edwards, Tony DeRose, Bruce George, Adolph Sabiski, Dave Taylor, Henry Legary, and John

Manno); the choir, CWL, KC’s; the doctors who helped him beat the odds these past 11 years (Drs. Kelly, Morgan, Minty, and Peters); the nurses who have previously revived him; Glen the OT; the Rusnak family; and to all those who supported us and visited Mikey over the past trying two months.

If friends so desire, donations can be made in honour of the life of Mike Bugera to either the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the SLMHC Diagnostic Imaging Fund through the Sioux Lookout Funeral Home, Box 1449, Sioux Lookout, ON P8T 1B9.

Words cannot describe how much I will miss my family. Although this is a sad occasion that I write this final note, it

is also an occasion to remember the good times, celebrate life and cherish the memories that no one can take away from us. I hope that Tara and the children remember the good times and be sure that I will always be around in spirit. I want to especially thank my health care team. It was a very large team with doctors in Thunder Bay, Winnipeg and Sioux Lookout. The Sioux Lookout team is amazing. Many contributed to my care including administration, diagnostic imaging, telehealth, emergency department, chemotherapy unit, and laboratory. The doctors and nurses all worked very hard together to provide the best care possible. I am still surprised at how closely knit together this community is. Support seems to come from everywhere, regardless of the cause or situation. Please know we are truly grateful for all the support we have received over the past few years.
