Parents pack SHS to learn more about French ImmersionTim Brody

AssociAte editor

The large turnout of parents October 22 at

Sacred heart School could be just the thing needed to get a French Immersion program up and running at the school next September.

Joanne Querel is the Superintendent of education for the Northwest Catholic District School Board and French Immersion is one of her portfolios.

She commented on the turnout of parents at last week’s French Immersion information

session. “We are very excited and thrilled about the turnout here tonight. We weren’t sure how many parents to expect this evening but from the audience we had I would say we had about 40 families here this evening with a real strong commitment

and interest in the possibility of a French Immersion program here next year.

“It was quite an opportunity for us to present French Immersion to the parent community here this evening and hear their questions to

help them make this important decision for their children.”

Surveys were available at the meeting for interested parents with many surveys having already been filled out and returned.

Querel said a strong parent commitment is needed if a French Immersion program is to get off the ground at Sacred heart School. “Once the surveys are in then it’s our task at the board level to collate all the data, present it to our board. The next board meeting, I believe, is November 20… then it will be our board of trustees who will make the decision to move the program forward if we have the numbers and the support… We find that a primary class size of 20 is optimal and as students move through the French Immersion program we want to ensure we have a solid number of students to ensure the program is viable

from Kindergarten all the way up to Grade 8, so that is our minimum number.”

If the school board decides in favour of a French Immersion program at ShS next fall, next steps would include hiring teachers, ensuring there is adequate classroom space, and ordering program resources.

The first hurdle the program has had to clear is a firm demonstration of community support.

If more than 20 students are interested in the program, Querel said the board might have to look at offering it in more than one classroom. She said the board would do everything it could to accommodate all interested parents.

If the board votes in favour of French Immersion at ShS the program would be modeled after the program currently being offered at St. Joseph’s School in Dryden.

A tail talehobo’s tail feathers

are sprouting like mung bean seeds (ah, remember the days when we were all going to be living a full life of self-sufficiency on a tiny piece of land, raising chickens, rabbits, and a goat, and eating sprouts grown in a mason jar...

ha, ha, another story).Judging by the

rapid growth of his tail feathers, I’d say ol’ hobo must have very recently donated his tail to a predator when I first saw him last weekend.

All summer I have been on the lookout for Romeo, the cat that snuck into the cabin and

hid out under my bed, in the spring. I think if he were still around I’d have spotted him a time or two. I haven’t, but I have wondered once in a while about him, and I have wondered why mice are so scarce this summer.

Last weekend, as I sat on the deck meditating with a glass of wine, I thought I heard a cat. I listened for quite a while after that, but didn’t hear any more. eventually I decided that what sounded like

“meow” was more likely my empty glass whispering “more” and I did what I had to do. It’s a miserable experience to hear the pitiful cries from an empty glass, and as evening turned to night I forgot about Romeo.

To begin the weekend Mary and I enjoyed another beautiful Friday evening sunset from our deck at camp, surrounded by hobo and a dozen of his comrades busily tucking sunflower seeds into winter stashes in the nearby trees.

The picture on the left is hobo on the previous weekend. On the right, hobo shows a new growth of feathers that must measure about an inch long that have come in during the week. I’m told that sometimes a second planting of tail feathers will be all white. I’ll be watching with special interest. If the tail doesn’t grow in white I probably won’t be able to pick hobo out of the crowd by the time Daylight Saving Time ends next weekend.

Some level of cooperation

I read with interest the story of developing a French immersion program at Sacred heart School.

As a parent of two children who attended Sioux Mountain/Central School’s French

immersion, I am very happy to see French immersion back on the radar screen in Sioux Lookout. As a community we need to offer school options for our children.

Our community has many residents from other areas of Canada

and many of these parents expect the best educational experience for their children; French immersion being one of those options.

It does, however, show the weakness of having two elementary schools in a small town. If there was some way

of integrating the two schools many more programs could be offered; music, baccalaureate. We miss many of these opportunities with having the two schools. Undoubtedly Sioux Mountain’s French immersion would have continued if there had been

a way for the two schools to combine the interested students.

I would encourage our school boards and principals to look outside the box and see if some level of cooperation can be developed to support our children.

Outlining key priorities for Kenora-Rainy River

At the start of the new fall session in the Ontario Legislature, MPP Sarah Campbell wasted no time laying out priorities for Kenora-Rainy River. This week marks the first week back for legislators at Queen’s Park.

Within recent months

spent in the riding, Campbell talked directly with residents about their needs and highest priorities: “I have heard from people on their concerns about the unaffordability of everyday life, whether it is the high cost of groceries and gasoline, their property tax bills, or home heating

such as hydro or oil. When I was face to face with these hard-working people and hearing their stories, their struggles were palpable.”

In addition to affordability, Campbell also highlighted issues around healthcare, justice, economy, and road safety. “I heard more concerns about not being able to access health care close to home. Instead of having access to medical services in Winnipeg, about 200 kilometers away, an increasing

number of people are being told that they must travel 2,000 kilometers away to the nearest specialty clinic in Ontario.”

The MPP also touched on the effect of forestry licenses on local communities, the absence of a resident judge in Rainy River, safe winter road maintenance and the twinning of

highway 17, trucking regulations, the emo Agricultural Research Station, resource revenue sharing, First Nation jury representation, and the issue around missing and murdered aboriginal women.

Campbell stated she will continue to raise these, and other important issues, during the upcoming months in the legislature.

Question of the week:

John MannBulletin Photo/Geoff Shields

Musician John Mann captivates Sioux Lookout audience

Geoff ShieldsstAff Writer

The Queen elizabeth District high School gymnasium, was

the setting for a concert by musician/songwriter/actor John Mann last Wednesday evening.

An audience of 135 people attended as Mann, accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Allan Rodger on backing vocals, guitar, bass and keyboards, performed the complete song list from his latest album The Waiting Room.

Also included in his repertoire were a cover song by Australian group hunters & Collectors entitled Throw Your Arms Around Me, and Save This house from an album of the same name by folk-rock band Spirit of the West, with whom he also performs.

Mann was born in Calgary, Alberta but now resides with his wife and two children in east Vancouver.

In 2009 he contracted cancer and spent several months in hospital during which he wrote the chords and lyrics for his latest CD, with songs such as the Angry Sore, Surgery and Prayer List reflecting the anxiety he was feeling at the time. In 2011 he was given the all clear and eventually was able to return to performing.

Mann opened the evening by saying, “hello rock fans” which was greeted with applause from the audience, then opened with the song

Angry Sore from his new album, subsequently including others such as a ballad Prayer List and a humorous song about planning his own funeral called These are the Instructions in which he was accompanied by Rodger on guitar. he also included one dedicated to his wife called For Jill.

Throughout the concert he explained what each song was about before playing it and there was a vibrant rapport on stage consisting of gestures and facial expressions between Mann and his fellow musician that gave added color to a professional performance.

After a short interval the second half of the show commenced with songs that included My Little Lamb, dedicated to his 16-year-old daughter hattie.

Mann concluded the evening with an unaccompanied rendition of the Robbie Burns poem To a Mouse. he and Rodger then left the stage to a standing ovation from the audience and returned soon for an encore where they performed Somebody’s Miracle from his first solo album entitled Acoustic Kitty.

Last month Mann was diagnosed with early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. This has not curtailed his desire to perform.

he spoke of his current tour and Sioux Lookout. “We started in Dryden, then Thunder Bay, Fort Frances, Atikokan, tonight Sioux

Lookout, and then the final performance tomorrow in Red Lake.”

he added, “I was booked to come here in 2009 but got colon cancer and have come back five years later to tell the story through songs that I wrote in the hospital waiting room.

“My view of Sioux Lookout has been limited, because all I have seen is where I performed tonight and the trail. however I have found the people to be extraordinary and the audience was generous, responsive, attentive and appreciative and I would love to come back here.”

Kelly Merke, who attended with his wife Kallie and

daughter Lily said, “The stories are good. The singing good. A very interesting perspective on his time in hospital.”

Carol Wiebe concurred. “It’s amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s wonderful.”

Doug Legros said the show was very informative.

Alyson Martin, Chairperson of the Sioux/hudson entertainment Series Committee, commented, “We have been waiting a number of years for John Mann to make his way to Northwest Ontario and Sioux Lookout in particular. The wait was worth it. his strength, courage, and talent is something that will be remembered by all of us.”

Rickford, Ayotte describe tragedy in OttawaTim Brody

AssociAte editor

TWO Canadian soldiers killed just days apart and

shots fired on Parliament hill. October 22 will be a day long remembered by Canadians.

Kenora MP and Minister of Natural Resources Greg Rickford shared, “I was scheduled to speak at national caucus shortly after

what would be when this incident occurred. The problem that I had, and it was fate, was that I had flown in from Calgary on a red-eye, landed in Ottawa at 8:15 that morning still wearing the previous day’s suit and I said, I think I’m going to go home, shower, freshen up, and obviously my parliamentary secretary was poised to present for

me if there were flight delays or what-have-you.

“I was running late and at about the time the driver would have come to pick me up to take me to the hill the events occurred. I ended up staying at home and watched things evolve on television.”

Rickford continued, “My main exercise was to keep Anne (Anne Ayotte of Sioux Lookout, his Regional Operations Manager) on the line every 10 minutes because my office is in the east block… from my window you can see the National War Memorial and the car that was

hijacked was sitting right out front of my office. So very quickly Anne and another staff person had to move from my office, parts of my office having exterior windows, to one of my offices across the hall that has no windows. They literally sat in there for the better part of the day in the dark, underneath the windowsills. Security checked in with them twice… The third time that they were checked on was when the SWAT team was doing their sweep and they stepped forward to identify themselves as staff, so a pretty crazy experience.”

Ayotte commented, “We’re all safe. I’m grateful for the quick action of the first responders, the police, and Kevin Vickers (Canada’s sergeant-at-arms).”

She explained that she had to hide in an office for 12 hours that day.

“At one point it wasn’t clear if there were more who had slipped into the building so we had to be quiet for safety’s sake. That turned out not to be the case but you don’t

know that. It was quite terrifying and mentally exhausting is what it was.”

She added, “It’s very sad as Greg noted our office looks out on the memorial where the soldier was killed. It’s quite heartbreaking to see it.”

Ayotte was home in Sioux Lookout last weekend to spend time with her family.

Rickford stated, “I felt the Prime Minster’s remarks were excellent,

Flags at the Municipal Office in Sioux Lookout were lowered to half-staff following last week’s tragic events.

but I must say, so were the other two leaders of the main parties. I think that the most important thing that happened after these horrific events is that parliamentarians went back to the hill the very next morning at the regular start time and convened and demonstrated to Canadians, and quite frankly anyone else out there who is thinking of

some horrific exercise like that, that Canada will not be intimidated. On matters of national security and getting on with the affairs of the nation, this only strengthened our resolve.

“Speaking on behalf of the government, we will redouble our efforts and the national security agencies to take all necessary steps to identify and counter

threats, and keep Canadians safe here and abroad. To the extent that we convened as parliamentarians and all partisanship was put aside, it was a house of Commons united.”

Rickford concluded by stating in a press release, “Today, I visited the National War Memorial to pay our respects to Corporal Nathan Cirillo on behalf of the

great Kenora riding. We placed a card and flowers at the Memorial thanking Corporal Cirillo for his service and honouring his sacrifice. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Corporal Cirillo, who was killed yesterday as he provided a ceremonial honour Guard at the War Memorial, and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent,

who was killed earlier this week by an ISIL-inspired terrorist.

“These horrific attacks on our security personnel and our institutions of governance were, by their very nature, attacks on our country, on our values, on our society, on us, Canadians, as a free and democratic people who embrace human dignity for all. But we will not be intimidated.

Today, we are back at work in Parliament, in the very heart of our democracy. We have every confidence that Canadians will pull together with the kind of firm solidarity that has seen our country through many challenges. Together, we will remain vigilant against those at home or abroad who wish to harm us.”

Spooktakular community luncheon held at St. Andrew’sGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

ST. Andrew’s United Church put on a soup and sandwich

lunch last Friday. This year’s event, which coincided with halloween, was entitled Spooktakular.

Approximately 125 people were there to socialize with friends and enjoy a repast of soup, sandwiches and cake, complemented by tea and coffee.

The event has been held for the past 20 years and helps to raise money

for the church. Marlene MacDonald

and Donna Prior organized this year’s lunch. Prior commented, “This is a spooktakular luncheon and we enjoy serving the public. It’s an opportunity for people in the community to

come out, have lunch, and socialize.”

Paddy Dasno attended the gathering. “The food is so wonderful, so good, and it’s a nice time to come out and see people,” she said.

Fellow diner Bob Beaver agreed, “It was very good, well presented, and I enjoyed meeting with friends.”

Kids Kaleidoscope season opens on a wild noteGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

“ThAT night, Max wore his wolf suit

and made mischief of one kind and another.”

These are the opening lines to a classic 1963

children’s book titled Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Over the years it has been made into a movie and adapted to the stage.

Last Thursday evening 185 parents and children

attended an adaptation of the play brought to town by the Presentation house Theatre from Vancouver. This event was the first of the Kids Kaleidoscope series of the 2014-2015 season.

The story is about Max, a little boy who was sent to bed without his supper after dressing in his wolf costume and creating havoc throughout the house. Once inside his room, he created his own fantasy world, which included a transformation of his bedroom into a jungle, after which, by sailing on the ocean, he discovered an island inhabited by creatures known as Wild

Things who eventually hail him as king.

After a coronation and a royal progression during which he engaged in frivolity and fun with his subjects, he decided, much to their dismay, to return home.

Upon arriving in his bedroom, he discovered that a hot supper left by his parents was waiting for him. his mischief had been forgiven.

Performers Linda

A. Carson as the orator of the story and Raes Calvert as Max presented a lively book interpretation performance that involved both children and adults though the use of visual effects such as an ornately decorated box and a back drop of the bedroom, plus active audience participation.

Carson opened the show as she sat on the box which kept vibrating. “I’m telling you a story of where the wild things are.” She then asked the children to guess what was in the box, and to describe the eyes, hair and teeth.

She asked some youngsters to help hold down the box which was finally opened and found to be empty.

Calvert made his appearance in a white wolf suit and grey tail. While reciting from the book the bedroom, with the aid of props, including the bedposts of his bed, were transformed into trees and a jungle.

As the story unfolded the young audience participated by holding long drapes of blue cloth to simulate the ocean over which Max sailed while making the sounds of wind, waves, and seagulls.

Once upon the island, masks were distributed to all present who were transformed into Wild Things.

Upon being crowned king, with the aid of two

masked children who held his crown and scepter, everyone was invited to get up and dance as jungle music was played in the background, followed by a royal progression.

As the time came for Max to return to the reality of his bedroom, the audience bid him farewell by waving goodbye.

After the show Calvert commented on the production group’s reception. “I loved it. It’s great to come to towns like Sioux Lookout, because for a lot of children of this age group this is their first theatrical experience because they are used to watching television shows and it is important for them to have a live performance experience where they get to be part of the show.”

he added, “I love Sioux Lookout. We had a great audience response. I loved it.”

Sarah Cosco, there with her daughter Mia, said, “It was great. It was inventive for the kids and the masks were pretty neat.”

heather Woodrow who attended with her children Maple, Forrest, Winter, and Lake, said, “I thought it was great, very interactive, humorous, a

good time.”Mandy hewlett added,

“It was really good, really energetic.”

Kids Kaleidoscope Committee President Michelle Diston was pleased. “We had an awesome turnout and I think it’s because so many people know the book and movie. What a great way to open the season. I loved how organized the theatre group was. We had high school students as ushers right down to the seating arrangements. It was very well organized.”

Every Set of Lost Keys Has a Story

“We lost our keys at a hockey game out of town, including

our expensive-to-replace smart key for the car. Our War Amps key tag did its job when our keys were

returned to us last week by courier, much to our relief.”

– War Amps supporter

The Key Tag Service – it’s free and it works.

Nearly 14,000 sets of lost keys are

returned every year.

financial advisor with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Sioux Lookout office. She is also a volunteer and member of the Kids Kaleidoscope Committee. At the close of the opening event of the season October 23

she presented Committee President Michelle Diston with a $500 cheque from RBC.

Annual fall feast fosters community togethernessGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

DOzeNS of people came through the

doors of the Nishnawbe –Gamik Friendship Centre last Thursday to partake in the sixth annual Tikinagan Child & Family Services Fall Feast.

A meal of turkey, ham, salad, carrots, pasta, mashed potato, stuffing, bannock, rolls, and cranberry sauce was served, followed by pumpkin pie and cake for dessert.

The event was hosted by the Family Services and Residential (Foster homes) units

and was supervised by Beatrice Kakepetum from Direct Services and Caroline Derouin, Direct Supervisor for Child Care, aided by 15 volunteers from the organization who made sure the event ran smoothly by serving the food to the people who attended.

Kakepetum shared, “The agency sponsors this fall feast. It’s a time when we put our community resources together to build positive relationships, working together, and enjoy our meal together. Our unit is based in Sioux Lookout, but we also speak for the 33 northern communities

that have their (Tikinagan) fall feasts at various locations at this time. We have fun preparing the food and serving it and we enjoy meeting people from the community.”

Derouin added, “It’s nice to see all the people coming to the feast and enjoying themselves. It is a time to get together.”

Director of Services Rachel Meekis-Bridge commented, “We do fall feasts for all our communities in the North and we are the ones that put it on. Our workers work with a lot of resources within the communities and we are

A COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS PROGRAM

ADOPT – A – FAMILYYes, the holiday season is upon us once more. For most, this season is filled with joy, love, family and holiday treats. However, there are many who do not have the same fortune and for them Christmas is a difficult and sometimes painful time of year, but you can help.

Each year, many women who stay at First Step Women’s Shelter decide to break free from lives of violence and abuse. They decide that they want something better, that their children deserve something better. These women struggle with many obstacles, and we would like to invite you to join us in making Christmas a joyous time for these families.

The “Adopt A Family” program matches a sponsor with a woman and her children who have left the Shelter and are now living in our community, free from violence. The sponsor assists by providing the family with gifts and donations. The Shelter will provide the sponsor with a “Wish List” to assist with the shopping.

This is our 19th year of matching women and children in need with generous community members, families, businesses and organizations. We have over 20families who need to be adopted this year. We hope that you will be able to gain the true meaning of Christmas this year by helping someone less fortunate.

For those who are unable to sponsor a family but would like to make a contribution, donations will be gratefully accepted at the Shelter and then matched with a family in need or with the women and children who, due to violent home situations, are forced to spend their Christmas at the Shelter. We would also gratefully accept donations of non-perishable food and gift certificates. Income tax receipts will be issued for any monetary donations.

If you are interested in participating, or would like more information, please contact Laura at 737-1438.

Dryden Eagles win battle of Highway 72On Tuesday, October

21 the Dryden eagles hosted the Queen elizabeth Warriors in Junior Boys volleyball action. The game was an exhibition contest, as Queen elizabeth is an “A” school, and Dryden high school is an “AA” school.

Their regular seasons are played separately. The localized geography always leans toward curiosity of what

competition would be like between the two schools. This was the first exhibition jr. volleyball contest in the past seven years. Both schools have strong athletes and dedicated coaches. The eagles prevailed in the contest, winning

3 sets to 1, 25-19, 20-25, 25-17, 25-20. The two teams may face each other again October 31 as Dryden hosts the Junior Boys Pumpkin Smash Tournament.
