DAILY MASS INTENTIONSDaily Mass intentions for 2018 are still available for the months of October, November and December.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL 2019

Recently I was placing the 2019 Catholic Charities Appeal (CCA) brochures in our Church vestibule. As I did that I began to question myself as to whether or not I REALLY knew AND understood the purpose and intent of this Ap-peal. I decided it was time for me to become better acquainted with this wonderful Archdiocesan effort. The Slogan: Giving Hope to All The very first thing I did was to go to the Archdiocesan website for Catholic Charities Appeal 2019. A brief video con-tains a comprehensive explanation of CCA by our Archbishop Charles Chaput. In it he outlines some of the significant ways in which CCA benefits and, yes, gives hope to tens of thousands of people included in five key areas: Education; Social Services; Nutritional Development Services, Evangelization, Parish and Spiritual Life; Clergy; and Local Mis-sion Activities. Each category depends on our awareness of their great need. CCA is the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s single most important annual fundraising initiative and it provides a positive source for good in all facets of the Church here in Philadelphia. If you are like me, sometimes at the end of the day I don’t know what I spent my couple of dollars on -- coffee, tolls, stamps, etc. With CCA I can be very sure that whatever I am able to give financially is being used wisely and for so many important causes. We are reminded on the brochure that CCA is recognized as a non-profit institution. As such, all gifts are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. CCA has its own Employer Identification Number and receives a separate financial audit. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia affirms that no funds donated during the Appeal are used to support the independent reconciliation and reparations program of associated expenses. Now as I pass by the CCA brochures in our vestibule I have a new awareness! I recall with joy students I taught in the past and how they were able to benefit from CCA. The priest who guided me to become a Religious Sister many years ago is now elderly and infirmed. He is able to live out his days in peace and with other contemporaries at Villa St. Jo-seph. The hearts of our St. John parishioners reach way beyond our parish in the various social outreach programs that we offer. No doubt we will easily reach our CCA goal this year. Remember: God will never be outdone in his gener-osity to each of us and we, in turn, are able to extend in big and small ways the gifts given to us for the good of others. God bless you! Sister Marganne

THE CHAIR OF SAINT PETER THE APOSTLE - February 22 Every year on February 22, the Church celebrates the feast of the Chair of St. Peter, to commemorate St. Peter’s teaching in Rome. Already in the second half of the 18th century an ancient wooden chair inlaid with ivory was venerated and tra-ditionally held to be the Episcopal chair on which St. Peter sat as he instructed the faithful of Rome. In fact, it is a throne in which fragments of acacia wood are visible, which could be part of the chair of St. Peter, encased in oak and reinforced with iron bands. Several rings facilitated its transportation during processions. Pope Alexander VII commissioned Bernini to build a sumptuous monument which would give prominence to this ancient wooden chair. Bernini built a throne in gilded bronze, richly ornamented with bas-reliefs in which the chair was enclosed: two pieces of furniture, one within the other. On January 17, 1666 it was solemnly set above the altar.

The base of the altar is made of black and white marble from Aquitaine and red jasper from Sicily. Four gigantic statues (about 5 m. tall) in gilded bronze surround the Chair which looks almost as if it were suspended amidst the clouds. The two outer statues are figures of two Doctors of the Latin Church: St. Ambrose and St. Augustine; the two inner statues, with bare heads, are of two Doctors of the Greek Church: St. Athanasius and St. John Chrysostom. These saints represent the catholicity of the Church and at the same time, the consistency of the theologians’ teaching with the doctrine of the Apostles.

Above the Chair are two angels bearing the tiara and keys, symbols of the Roman pontiff’s authority. On the Chair, are three bas-reliefs picked out in gold, which refer to the same number of Gospel episodes: the Consignment of the keys, Feed my sheep, and the Washing of the feet.

The whole composition is crowned by the fantastic gilt and stucco Gloria peopled by a host of angels among rays of light and gigantic billowing clouds. In their midst is the precious window of Bohemian glass, divided into twelve sections as a tribute to the Twelve Apostles; a brilliant dove stands out against it, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, the soul of the Church which he never ceases to help and to guide. Vanvitelli decorated the vault with gilded stucco. In the three medallions are portrayed: the Consignment of the Keys, the Crucifixion of St. Peter and the Beheading of St. Paul.

Monthly Food Collection

LET US PRAY THE ROSARY!The challenges our world is facing, as well as our be-loved Church, call us to DO something! The best rem-edy, needless to say, is prayer. We will pray the holy Rosary at 10:30 AM each Sunday in the Chapel. The Rosary is a very powerful sacramental. When Our Lady appeared to the children at Fatima she told them: “There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary.” So, come join us here at St. John’s each Sunday as we pray the Rosary for peace and an end to strife in our world, our Church, our city, and our homes.

For 16 years, Mr. Joe Fabrizio, has brought his knowledge and love of the Catholic Faith to all the fifth graders that he teaches each Monday evening in the PREP program. He is a Council Rock History teacher for 21 years and teaches Grade 8 in Newtown Middle School. Mr. Fabrizio spends hours us-ing technology to make the textbook material come alive for the 9 students who attend his class. Mr. Fabrizio is a witness of his own faith and his active participation in the parish as an usher and his educational background as a teacher enable him to convey the many tenets of our faith to his students. One of the traditional projects takes a deeper look at the apparitions of Mary. The students put much effort into this and when com-pleted present the finished project to their classmates. Parents and friends are invited to hear, from the student, the meaning and details of the apparitions. Using the Smartboard exclusive-ly with numerous pictures enhances the lessons tremendously. Mr. Fabrizio wishes to bring to each student an under-standing of the sacraments and because they are taught in class he hopes that each student realizes the impact it has on their own personal faith journey. It is when the students learn about the miracles that they understand that this is proof “that our Catholic faith is real.” His other goals are to help the students realize that they will be challenged in their faith beliefs and that they are to learn how to say no when this happens. “With-out a doubt, God is real and He does exist and cares about all people.” Mr. Fabrizio brings to his class his expertise as a profession-al educator and the students realize fully that the PREP class is yet another extension of their school day. The concentration on the subject matter and the need to learn are driving forces that make his class so rewarding. His main goal is to have the stu-dents and parents understand that “Catholicism is the one true religion founded by Jesus and prophesized to billions via the apostles for 2000 years.” With verbal profession and unrelent-ing witness, Mr. Fabrizio brings love and understanding for the Catholic faith that few can surpass. Mr. Fabrizio brings to the forefront the true meaning of “love” and “hope.” As stated above, Mr. Fabrizio wants each student to “know that there is definitely a God.” All learn more about why our Catholic faith should be the primary focus in our lives when speaking to him or learning from him. And for this I and all who come in to contact with Mr. Fabrizio are truly blessed!!

Knightly News

Welcome to Holland - by Emily Pearl KingsleyI am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience, to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It’s like this. . .

When you’re going to have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous va-cation trip - to Italy. You by a bunch of guidebooks and make your wondrful plans. The Coliseum. Michaelangelo’s David. The gon-dolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland.”“Holland?!?” you say, “What do you mean Holland? I signed up for Italy! All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy.” But there’s been a change in the flight plan. They’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, dis-gusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It’s just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guidebooks And you must learn a whole new language And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met. It’s just a different place. It’s slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you’ve been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around...and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills...and Holland has tulips, Holland even has Rembrandts. But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy, and they’re all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say: “Yes, that’s where I was supposed to go That’s what I had planned.”The pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away, because the loss of that dream is a very, very significant loss. But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland.
