Flooring factsheetCarpet care guide from WOOLSAFE maintenance • cleaning • spot removal • protection • inspection

General Rules for Spot Removal• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet

roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment –if unsure, use solvent first

• Always work from the edge of the spot inwards

• BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; workinto the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backedcarpet tiles

• When using solvents always ensure there is plentyof fresh air ventilation

• Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotterswith clean water

• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Periodic CleaningWhen the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it coulddo with a really good clean, you can either do the jobyourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaningcompany.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourselfmake sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approvedproducts. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:

WOOLSAFE-approved carpetcare products have beenindependently and scientificallytested and are safe andeffective for cleaning andmaintaining all types of carpetsand rugs.

Regular MaintenanceRegular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet andmaintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly andthoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Housekeeping Tips forCarpets and RugsEntrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to thehouse is highly recommended, as they will significantlyreduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They shouldbe of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removedfrom shoe soles and must be cleaned regularlythemselves.

Protective treatmentsMany carpets come with a protective fibre treatment toreduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and willeventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regularcleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturercan be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE

accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearestWOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit ourwebsite: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATEHOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have theWOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpetmanufacturers!

COLOUR MATCHINGCarpets are produced in batches - known ascreels - and usually each batch producesbetween 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipeused by the dyer remains constant, and isfollowed to the letter, in each separateproduction the colour reproduction will varyfrom batch to batch. However production ismatched back to the original or mastersample to ensure that the colour remains‘within a commercial tolerance’.This process if not an exact science and acommercial tolerance is subjective butnevertheless is usually the professionaljudgement of the head dyer based on his/herexperience. A greater level of tolerance is required onblended colours (Heathers etc). To ensureperfect colour matching it is advisable that asingle width be used in any installationrequiring exact colour matching.N.B. Carpets which are laid with the piletravelling in different directions, even thoughthey be from the same batch will appear notto match. For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLESThe samples held by individual retailers maynot be from the same batch as currentproduction and therefore should be used as aguide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDINGAll cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, whichis created during production when spun yarnis cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall ontothe surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may beremoved without detrimental effect upon thecarpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibreis only a small fraction of the total fibrecontained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPSPulled loops occur only in looped pile carpetwhere one or more loops in the continuouspile is pulled through the primary backing ofthe carpet. This is usually due to some localcondition, possibly some sharp object whichhas caught in a loop in situ and has resultedin a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with bytrimming the offending end level with therest of the pile. They should not be left as thiscould result in further loops being pulled anddeveloping into a ladder.

SPROUTINGOccasionally an odd tuft or two can work itsway to the surface and stand proud of the restof the pile. This is probably due to one end ofthe tuft being longer than the other i.e. Jshaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedialaction merely requires that the offending tuftsbe scissor trimmed level with the rest of thepile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADINGShading occurs because the pile of the carpethas become crushed, flattened or brushed in adifferent direction to the natural lie of the pilewhilst in situ. This causes light reflection atdiffering angles resulting in the creation oflight and dark patches on the carpet. This willoccur on all pile fabrics but can be morenoticeable on plainer carpets because theshadows created by pile pressure will not bedisguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATICCarpets do not produce static but like otherhousehold fabrics and objects have thecapacity to store it. Static is caused by thebuild up of static electricity upon personnelin a dry environment and is discharged whena person makes contact with an object whichcan conduct electricity (i.e. door handle orfiling cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensitydepending upon the individual, air humidityand the contact materials. Static is moreusually associated with synthetic materials asthey do not retain moisture very well but itcan and does occur with wool in very dryroom conditions.Preventative measures include theintroduction of moisture into the room or insitu carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOLCarpets made from wool can and do fade inuse. The degree of fade can vary dependingon the colour chosen and the local conditionsto which the carpet is subjected.Fading can be caused by exposure to ultraviolet light which is found in daylight, but isaccelerated when sunlight shines directlyonto the carpet. This has the effect oflightening or “Bleaching” the colour just asexposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposedto such conditions just as you would protectother furniture or fabrics.A complaint on fading would be consideredjustified if it failed to meet the required shadestandard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL(SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or napof the carpet changes direction and thusreflects light at different angles showing theeffects of shading which can becomepermanent. It is also described as‘watermarking’. This can happen to everycarpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton,Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indianor even Coir Matting. Like shading it can bemore apparent on plain carpet because heavypatterns can disguise the effects. It can occurquite quickly after installation. A tremendousamount of research has been carried out overmany years by many institutes to determinethe cause of this phenomenon but none of ithas proved conclusive. There is no commonlyknown manufacturing process which cancause or cure this phenomenon and thereforeit is not a manufacturing fault. For furtherinformation please check with individualmanufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONSWhen a carpet is subjected to a heavy pointload, such as under the legs of furniture, it isunreasonable to expect the carpet not toindent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile torecover. In the case of very heavy loads inplace for a considerable time, the recoverytime can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only thepile of the carpet that becomes indented. theunderlay will also indent and the backing ofthe carpet may also distort into theindentation in the underlay. Some underlay’swill recover well and some less welldepending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.The use of cups below furniture legs canspread the load and the net result is a largerarea of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavystatic load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939and many manufacturers will have data onthis aspect of carpet performance. In this testthe carpet is loaded for 24 hours and thedegree of recovery is measured after 1 hourand 24 hours. Since there are so manydifferent underlay’s however, it is very rarefor the recovery from a heavy static load to beevaluated on carpet and underlay.Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaningwith a rotating brush machine) will speed uprecovery but in the case of seriousindentations the use of an iron and damp clothor a steam iron together with a blunt darningneedle to carefully tease up the pile can bebeneficial. Care must be take not to over wetthe carpet, of course.

FLATTENINGFlattening will occur as a result of trafficwhich eventually flattens the pile particularlyin the main areas of use. All pile fabrics willflatten to greater or lesser degree dependanton the amount of traffic to which it issubjected and the construction (tuftdensity/pile fibre/height/weight) of theproduct concerned.

SOILINGSoiling is usually the result of some localcondition to which the carpet has beensubjected to, or maintenance, or lack ofmaintenance programme. There is nothing weas manufacturers can do to prevent soiling inuse. There are several types of soiling whichare quite common:Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave astain. In such instances, professional helpshould be sought.Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leavesticky soap residues in the fibres which canresult in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.Dust - which is carried on draughts can soilcarpets in various ways, apart from theobvious soiled edges, at gaping skirtingboards for instance, dark lines appearing onsurface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards.Sometimes the shape of floorboards can beseen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimesshows itself as spots on the carpet, this is dueto the air carried on a draught under thecarpet escaping through minute holes both inthe underlay and the carpet, leaving dustdeposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paperis essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advisethe consumer when the carpet is measured ofany poorly fitting doors, skirtings, orfloorboards and the consumers responsibilityto ensure any remedial work to seal draughts,is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if aresulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet

TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpetproduced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll ofcarpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primarybacking fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. Aheavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and asecondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A widevariety of styles and textures can then be created using varioustechniques.

LOOP PILEBerber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effectunderfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours andmay be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highlyflexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casualappearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blendbetween luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes threeloop heights to create informal, random textures which are veryforgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for hightraffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebblytexture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust anddirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which shouldbe heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending togetherto form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints andvacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn istightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result isa versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all havea level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is thensheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but

still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for

prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing

as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a

velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of

high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.

The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –

although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned

axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to

axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre

is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create

a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality

carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat

weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a

wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

Carpet types

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easilyand the colour looks different from place to place because fibreslying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury foroccasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOPWhen some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety ofsurface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety ofcolours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints andstains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and generalpurpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surfaceflattens easily and lacks durability.

BONDEDBonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’)are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres arenot stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principallyused for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet

Good underlay will...• Improve underfoot comfort• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear• Improve thermal insulation and warmth• Increase sound insulation• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections• Last the lifetime of the carpet

Poor or old underlay will...• Feel hard and unwelcoming• Reduce carpet life• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly• Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working withgripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavytraffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combinationof thickness and density is all important as a thickunderlay with low density may not perform well.Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it willneed to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installationswith 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet andlaminate flooring offers retailers one of the bestopportunities to add value to every sale - with goodprofitability, trade-up potential once benefits areunderstood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that newunderlay is always required, the only decision is whichtype. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers canwalk on samples with different grades of underlay andfeel the difference has shown excellent results - somemanufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Underlay

Sponge rubberThe market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.

PU (polyurethane) foamPU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

Crumb rubberFlat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).

Laminate underlayThere’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.

CombinationA rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlayAlways ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

FeltThis traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay ismade from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - tocreate a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.Still a very popular choice among contractors whenstretch fitting woven carpets

Pre-tackified underlayA self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefeltand PU. A removable system for heavy use whencomfort is desired

The new Carpet Foundation website is proving a great success. Designed to drive footfall intoRegistered Specialists, overtly play on the link with the Office of Fair Trading, promote Britishmade carpet and have greater accountability with harder hitting messages, it has been very wellreceived by consumers and retailers alike.

The new design is modern, clean and easy to navigate while the content has been reorganised. Itstill provides the ‘everything you need to know when buying carpet’ advice but is morecommercial and harder hitting. An advanced retailer search facility, which can be searched bypostcode or town, includes directions and gives consumers easy up front access to their nearest

Registered Specialist.

With a bank of over 150 images, each section has arandom flash slide show and contains hard hittingpropaganda statements. A key feature of the new siteis a downloadable voucher. No definite committal topurchase is necessary and all consumers have to do is get the voucher stamped by a Registered Specialist. Theincentive is that 50 individuals each month win a Threshers gift voucher worth £10.

An added bonus for retailers is that the Carpet Foundation is providing, on application, a free web page for allits retail members.

The site is also fully optimised and is now firmly entrenched in the top 5 on Google. Since 1st October, 42,500individuals have visited the site and 9,400 have used the site to find a retailer.

Commenting on the site’s performance, Rupert Anton, CF marketing director said: “We acknowledged thatwe had to become more hard nosed and really play up to our strengths. The results, however, have

exceeded our expectations. Site traffic has increased; people are spending longer on the site, viewingmore pages and revisiting more often. It is being used very much as ‘the definitive guide to carpet’ and isfast becoming the one stop portal for the carpet buying public. It majors on our strengths; is moreaggressive against the opposition and what is more, it is all changeable in-house.”

Consumer site hits harder

Throughout September, October and November 2008, Brintons received whatseemed like a steady stream of new vehicles which are quite stunning in the newBrintons Residential livery depicting their Seasons campaign.

The Brintons vehicle fleet includes merchandising and their in-house team of fittersalso who received new vans displaying this head-turning new livery.

The new fleet is much more fuel efficient than the previous vehicles and gives Brintonsthe opportunity to maximise the number of deliveries they make without the use ofexternal carriers which in turn leads to them utilising their own vehicles moreefficiently, controlling costs. This will also enable them to roll-out their ‘next-week’delivery service across more areas as well as offer the ability of delivering the weekafter receiving a Saturday morning order to more territories.

In addition, Brintons endeavor to keep the vehicles as clean as possible, especiallythrough the Winter, ensuring that the livery stays bright and distinct. The receipt ofthese new vehicles clearly indicates Brintons eagerness to invest in the brand whateverthe market conditions.

A quality independent retailer from Colorado was open andhonest about carpet and green advantages in a way that wedon’t often hear in the UK. “Wool is the way forward, nodyes, no chemicals, no nylon – 100%, that’s what I sell andwe want to know how that manufacturer is limiting hiscarbon footprint. The use of solar panels to the amount ofwater he uses – it counts in Colorado”

Some areas of the USA are way ahead on the eco agenda –Colorado clearly being one of them. But green build is agrowing trend everywhere there and it has lots ofgovernment directives and initiatives pushing it forward.

Clearly, this retailer saw that by having this level ofinformation about his product and displaying ‘greener’ rangesthat met eco-specifications, he was winning valuablebusiness. Interest rates being a powerful green purchaseincentive – in the USA, there are special loan rates toindustry for using products that meet eco specs.

“The nitty gritty of eco is becoming more important, somestates are really pinning us down on our product and ourenvironmental-business plan,” said Sharon Bric of HiberniaCarpet Mills in Los Angeles.

America and the eco advantage

Ulster Carpets has becomethe first UK textilemanufacturer to achievethe Carbon Trust Standard- an award for businessesthat have measured, managed and reduced theircarbon footprint and arecommitted to the continualreduction of carbonemissions year on year.

The Carbon TrustStandard clearlydemonstrates whichbusinesses andorganisations are takingreal action on climatechange and have reducedtheir own carbon emissions. It was set up by the Carbon Trust in response to the consumermistrust of green claims and also confusion among businesses about what they could do toimprove energy efficiency. It requires clear and continual action by the company, which isverified by a recognised regulatory authority.

Since 2001, Ulster Carpets has reduced their carbon footprint by 44% through theimplementation of various initiatives. These include upgrading lighting systems, installing heatrecovery plants and developing energy efficient in-house weaving equipment. To achieve thestandard the company has reduced its carbon footprint by nine per cent over the last threeyears saving more than 650 tonnes of carbon.

George Ussher,Technical Services and Environmental manager at Ulster Carpets commented,“For many years, we have made a serious business commitment to measure and reduce ourcarbon emissions. This has allowed us to achieve greater energy efficiency and we will continueto investigate ways which will further enhance our carbon reduction program.”

Well Done Ulster carpets!

Ulster Carpets wins Carbon Trust award

The American flooring show Surfaces held in Las Vegas in the first week ofFebruary was always going to be interesting. The global recession that hasaffected the world so dramatically began in the USA and they are clearlyfeeling its affects badly. Property foreclosures (repossessions) are a horrificreality there, property values have fallen through the floor and new build isalmost non- existent.

So what of the flooring industry? The gloomy reality was clearly never faraway. But whilst some manufacturers had pulled out of the show as a costcutting measure, the majority were still exhibiting and most remainedconfident that they would work their way through the difficulties. Most ofthem seem set for a tough 18 months.

Wool, it seems, fares better there than other flooring types. It is a luxuryfibre flooring in the USA and its consumer is high end, it is often sold viainterior design consultants and architects. “Because of this it has had astronger position than products aimed at middle to low end and is actuallygrowing market share,” explained Tim Booth, product development managerat British Wool.

Accompanied by co-exhibitors Brintons, Axminster Carpets, CavalierCarpets and designer flatweave manufacturer Fleetwood Fox, British Wool hosted a strikingBritish themed event, which enjoyed good interest throughout the three days of the show.

Footfall was almost certainly down on the previous year but all co-exhibitors felt that they hadreceived good interest from quality visitors. “Ultimately what matters most is quality overquantity. The key for British Wool is that as a team we felt that we had gained ground in thisvaluable market, particularly rewarding when you consider the difficulties the US market is facing.”

Ele Ease, the revolutionary new floating floor product set totransform the luxury vinyl sector, has been revamped andextended for its UK market launch.

With its unique Stick Strip technology, Ele Ease halves the cost oflaying conventional luxury vinyl tile and plank products – andreduces installation time by up to 75%.

Now, thanks to a collaboration between the Hartlepool-basedWhitestone Weavers group of companies and the ZhangjiagangElegant Plastics Company in China, Eletile Ltd is launching a UKspecific range.

“It’s an incredible product because it can be laid over an existing floor, requires no adhesive and very little preparation,” says Mark Taylor who heads up the UKside of the Eletile partnership.

New Ele Ease products being launched in April are Finesse – a collection of 48” registered emboss planks - and Ele Ease At Home – a brand new collection forthe domestic market in ten wood ranges and six slate coloured tile options (12” and 36” sizes). Ele Ease will be the first to offer matching finishing strips.Thenew products are in addition to the Ele Ease Commercial range in eight woods and three tiles; and the Ele Ease Signature collection in five woods.

The first proven floating floor system, all Ele Ease products pass 95% Relative Humidity tests, dispensing with any need for a damp proof membrane.

Such time and cost savings have already seen Ele Ease installed in a number of High Street stores (including B&Q, PC World, BHS and WH Smith) where theease and speed of fitting has dramatically reduced store opening schedules.

Independent stockists also stand to make huge gains. Says Mark: “Conventional LVT products offer greater opportunities to the flooring fitter than they do theretailer because of the sheer amount of time they take to install. With Ele Ease, a stockist can get a fitter to lay several floors in the time it would have taken todo just one with traditional vinyl. Consumers will also be more willing to have a go themselves as the system is so quick and straightforward.”

There are environmental benefits too: Ele Ease needs no uplift of old floors and, in many cases, no eco-unfriendly adhesives or screeds.

The new Ele Ease products from Eletile are available from April 2009. Full point of sale supporting packages are available to stockists.

Nothing encourages customer loyalty and repeat sales more than the delivery of helpful tips and advice intimes of need.Whilst this could include any number of instances where flooring is concerned, one of the morecommon issues experienced by consumers is often that of cleaning.

Further to building effective relationships with customers, flooring retailers can also benefit from add-on salesby stocking the cleaning products that they are happy to recommend.Additional revenue streams are obviouslydesirable for any business and especially applicable when headlines continue to focus on an economic downturn.

Paul Bakker,WoolSafe managing director, says that flooring retailers can impress consumers by adopting aninnovative approach when the situation demands it.This could include the removal of coffee stains or burn andscorch marks,he advised.

'Burn and scorch marks may see homeowners reaching for scissors, particularly on twist pile carpets, in orderto remove the mark,’ he said.‘However, such drastic action is not necessary for 100% wool carpets and thereare a couple of tricks to try first.Rubbing the affected area with a coin may well help and if that fails tell thehomeowner to try rubbing the area gently with some coarse grit sandpaper.Unfortunately,on 80/20 woolnylon carpets the damage may be permanent due to the nylon melting.’

There are a number of cleaning products recommended by WoolSafe to tackle a variety of problems.Thecompany has also published a list of certified operators for further action if the consumer requires additionalassistance.

Innovation continues to play a part in the cleaning arena. A recent example is that of the ReadyDry productfrom Bissell. The company states that this is able to provide a carpet cleaning concept that is dry in 30 minutesby utilising patented PowerRoller technology, sourced from the commercial sector.Bissell reports that the useof ReadyDry means that carpets can now be washed and dried in the time normally taken to vacuum.Theproduct works by using minimum moisture to trap, lift and gently remove dirt, says the company. As themoisture does not soak through and there is no direct cleaning solution spray/suction,carpets and rugs aretouch dry in half an hour. The use of the Oxy Gen2 power tool can also provide spot cleaning, helping to dealwith stains such as red wine and coffee when combined with Oxygen Boost.

Floor cleaning products are also included in the comprehensive range offered by Ozkleen. Its Carpet Powerand Kitchen Power options have been developed for use on a variety of flooring products, the company states.Among the benefits delivered by its Carpet Power range are the ability to tackle tough stains such as tea, inkand those created by the family pet, says Ozkleen, and this can be used on most types of carpet andupholstery.A further plus is the ability to eliminate odours - another common problem when spillages occur -and Carpet Power is also approved by WoolSafe. The company states that its Kitchen Power has beendeveloped as a multi-purpose product that, when diluted with water, has the ability to penetrate any ground-infloor dirt.

Cleaning appliances can also be recommended by retailers on the basis that their customers’ investment innew flooring can be better protected if it is cleaned more effectively. In addition to designing its machines to lastfor a minimum of 25 years,Sebo has also looked at the environmental impact of its range. As a result 100% ofits packaging can now by recycled, the company states,as this is created through the use of sustainably-sourcedwood pulp cardboard and recyclable Polystyrol. Each vacuum is also manufactured in Europe, thereby avoidingthe need for long haul transportation and keeping carbon footprint to a minimum, says Sebo, with themaximum amount of products included on each palette for transportation.

retailers respond to industry issues

l Are retailers too quick to sell on price?l Do consumers understand enough about quality to pay more for it?l Do manufacturers understand retail enough to help you sell higher value products?

A common theme that comes up repeatedly in our Voice of the Trade feature is that retailersdon’t always do enough to trade their customers up to better quality products.

Some manufacturers comment that retailers are too keen to sell on price and only havethemselves to blame for devaluing carpet as a commodity purchase. Fair comment? Or couldmanufacturers do more to motivate higher margin sales?

This is your chance to influence the industry by taking part in this month's Flooring Forum.

Note that this survey takes only 4 minutes and it's confidential and anonymous - we don't needyou to leave any personal information.Visit www.thestocklists.com and click on the Forum panel.

Next month we’ll report on the findings to see how retailers respond to the challenge.

Flooring Foruma new service for retailersfrom The Stocklists

The Stocklists has launched a new platform for retailersto respond to trade issues and inform the industryabout the problems and opportunities they face on theHigh Street and retail parks across the UK.

Each month,The Stocklists will present a topic fordebate linked to an online survey. The survey isanonymous and will takes no more that four minutesto complete. A full report and analysis of the results willfeature in each month’s magazine.

The Stocklists publisher Diane Martin commented:“The retailer doesn’t have much of a voice in theflooring industry - it’s usually the manufacturers anddistributors who get centre stage.

“We want to give those people at the sharp end anopportunity to make themselves heard and ensure thatdebate and decisions in the industry are informed bythe widest seelction of views and opinions.”

The survey aims to be provocative and, as well as aseries of questions, there’s a Soapbox feature whereretailers can sound off about the subject - TheStocklists will print as many responses as are fit topublish.

Future topics include: the real value of environmentalmarketing; the performance of reps; POS best practice;training and buying groups.

Wool is securing its place as the ‘fibre of fashion’ thanks to anambitious programme of innovation in yarn technology that reachesaround the world with Wools of New Zealand and is driven by thecreativity of their International Development Centre in Yorkshire.

Their aims recognise the need to improve consumer perception ofcarpets and capitalise on the premium potential of top quality woolcarpet in European markets. This is especially true in the UK wherewool retains its loyalty and the high-end product is still considered tobe selling well against the market trend.

“We believe carpet is a fashion industry and there is a strong marketfor creative quality in this sector,” says Joanna Ramsden of WNZ.“The key to sustaining this interest is innovation to keep that creativityfresh and exciting.”

Wools of New Zealand starts at the beginning, nurturing thatinnovative zeal with a close relationship with their international yarnspinners. This partnership is part technology and part creativity andhas fostered exciting new yarn combinations such as wools with silksand cottons and, more surprisingly, paper, bamboo and shiny metallicsand synthetic fibres.

The showcase for this initiative is the Yarn Innovation Awards heldannually at Domotex where new yarns and their finished carpets aredisplayed art-gallery style and voted on by selected judges at the show, representing more than 20 leading carpet manufacturers.

This year’s presentation, held in Hannover in January, featured spinnersfrom Italy, Japan and New Zealand and designs inspired bycontemporary trends in Celtic knitwear, Scottish plaids, ‘Saville Rowsuiting’ and fashionable Italian woven leather.

And in this Oscar ceremony of wool fashion, the Italian spinner

yarn technology sets fashion agenda

Commanding international attention is the conceptual Lace

Collection, presented by Wools of New Zealand to demonstrate how

yarn technology can deliver stunning results.Taking their cue from

fashions seen on the 2008 Italian catwalks, the designers have

taken an ebony wool contrasted with the bright Glacial® white wool

yarn, to create a delicate, web-like fabric. The introduction of an

innovative three-dimensional texture gives the true lace effect of the

design floating on its surface.

The black & white axminster lace design interprets the delicate and femininepatterning associated with current fashion trends.

This ‘Mirage’ design adds advanced tufting technology to sophisticated yarns to createa complex multi-dimensional effect modelled on woven leather handbag styles.

Martinelli took centre stage with two awards – as ‘Yarn Innovator2009’ and for having the ‘Best Visual Yarn’.

A leader in the production of high quality chenille yarns for carpetsand rugs, Martinelli succeeded with their Rustic Wool Chenille yarnof New Zealand wool, bamboo and cotton. Demonstrating the flairfor which Italians are famous, the yarn has a soft, velvety finish inshades of olive and aubergine with a sumptuous gold, creating anatural elegant rustic quality with a random laméd effect.

Martinelli’s award for the Best Visual Yarn shows the Wools of NewZealand partnership to great effect.Their winner was the DoupionnéWool Tweed – a black wool yarn plied with a lustrous whitedoupionné bamboo. Presented with a glamorous black and whiteyarn, the WNZ designers at Ilkley translated the fibre intoextravagant contrast checks in the iconic style of Coco Chanel.

The various carpet designs that emerge from each new yarninnovation become part of the Wools of New Zealand Carpet TrendPortfolio, a fashion-setting collection shown to manufacturers, spinners and designers around the world to set the agenda forfuture developments.

But this approach is of more than academic interest - these yarnsfind their way onto the floor. “Our enthusiasm for the technology andthe design is rooted in the marketplace,” says Joanna Ramsden. “Weare designing to inspire consumers to invest in quality products andour approach is wholly commercial. Many of the concepts thatvisitors to Domotex see on the wall will end up on the floor of themost discerning consumers.”

y sets fashion agenda

New role to rejuvenate Wools of New Zealand In a move to maximise the impact of quality woolmarketing,Wools of New Zealand has integrated withWool Partners International – a newly established woolprocurement and marketing company.

The new organisation’s aim is to ‘rejuvenate’ the NewZealand ‘strong wool’ industry and intends to secure itsplace as market leader in both the supply chain andbranding for strong wool.

Wools of New Zealand fits within this new entity and itsprogramme for premium carpets and rugs is seen as a keypart of the package.

Wool Partners owns New Zealand’s largest wool handlingfacility and has the largest wool-dedicated procurementteam dealing directly with wool growers. It also operatesits own wool trading division and is seeking partnershipsacross the supply chain to provide an integrated servicefrom farm to consumer’s floor.

Iain Abercrombie has been appointed chief executive ofWool Partners International and commented: “We see ahuge opportunity to re-introduce wool as a luxury fibre toa changing world and to do this requires a new approach –a genuine partnership. We are excited about the untappedpotential.”

London’s Floorstyle and the Tile and Stone exhibitions scheduled for May this year have been postponed,Organisers Dmg world media cited the ‘extraordinary economic climate’ despite the success of the event atLondon’s Excel since its launch in 2001.

Dmg world media publishing and events director Patrick Taylor said: “The economic downturn has hit this industryhard and it has become clear that potential exhibitors do not need the added strain of sustaining a 2009 Londonshow. In the hundreds of conversations we’ve had, the vast majority of suppliers and manufacturers are sayingthey have made a strategic decision to not exhibit in London in 2009 and we respect and understand that.Kbbreview is now in its 25th year and we’ve reached that milestone by always supporting and listening to theindustry.”

The announcement leaves the National Floor Show at Harrogate as the only UK flooring exhbition this year andorganisers, UBM, have asked the industry to show their support for the event. ‘With six months to go untilNational Floor Show, we are in a steady position considering the current climate, in particular the hard times thatthe flooring sector is undergoing,’ said UBM’s Sam Fisher.

The key exhibitors are already signed up for the event which takes place September 8-10. Sam commented: ‘Weare now focused on bringing in new companies to provide even more reasons to visit the event in September.Toensure this is a flooring success, we need the 100% backing of the industry. This is the only chance in 2009 formanufacturers and suppliers to meet with thousands of customers over three days,” she said.

The kbbreview Industry Awards 2009 will be going ahead at ExCeL on May 11 as planned. “The kbbreviewIndustry Awards is the biggest party of the year and the 2009 event is set to be bigger and better even than therecord breaking 2008, ” said dmg’s Patrick Taylor.

Rugged beautyThe wildernesses of Scotland and Scandinavia are theinspiration behind Brockway Carpets' Shetland range, launched recently to rave reviews.

Shetland is made from a blend of wools from Norwayand the Shetland Islands, with its stunning looks and feelderiving from the fact that it is a 100% natural product. The wools are not artificially dyed but coloured by anatural process whereby the spinner blends the rawwashed wools together to create soft, delicate tonesthat reflect the product's unique heritage.

The carpet comes in a range of attractive greys, fawnsand creams in heathered effect. Despite its luxurious, soft feel, it is still hardwearing and durable enough forthe toughest domestic environment: the wool producedby the hardy Shetland sheep translates into anextremely resilient, springy yarn which is ideal forcarpets.

The new range further reinforces Brockway'scommitment to supporting local British traditionalindustries. Like its Lakeland Herdwick range, whichhelps sustain the Lake District's native Herdwick sheep, the Shetland range supports a traditional industrywhich is vital to the way of life of one of the UK's mostfar-flung communities.

Restructuring specialists believe the number of UK insolvencies will soar by 55% towards theend of 2009, more than double the number before the credit crunch. However, a new analysisby business intelligence analysts Plimsoll Publishing, suggests that it’s not too late to save manyof the 139 UK floor coverings ‘danger’ companies rated as being at high risk of failure. However the new report comes with a warning: these companies must start to fix theirproblems now.

David Pattison, senior business analyst at Plimsoll, says: “The first issue is to understand theextent of the problems the company is facing. In our 22 years of analysing the floor coveringsmarket, the symptoms of a failing business are sadly, all too familiar.” Plimsoll maps out fivephases of failure:

Phase 1.The company comes under pressure to increase sales, so uses all their resources, maybe selling at a loss, or adding costs to service their clients’ demands.

Phase 2. As a result, the company is encouraged to take on extra short term debts tofinance the sales drive, putting extra pressure on their profit margins through extra interestpayments - therefore failing to cut costs.

Phase 3. After a while, the banks grow nervous and ask that this unsecured finance beswapped to long term finance.

Phase 4. Armed with the extra financed capital, the company continues with the failingstrategy and allows the overdraft to start to build up again and thus eroding the profits more.

Phase 5. The company debt grows to an uncontrolled level and the banks once again grownervous and may demand immediate repayment of the debt. When the company is unable todo this, administrators are called in.

David Pattison says: “A critical factor in this cycle is to understand the key measures tomonitor in your business in order to pinpoint any decline. Our analysis will tell you instantly, where the company is strong and what its weaknesses are, so that a clear set of turnaround

targets can be put in place. Companies are made aware of their problems sooner, and themanagement then has more time to put a survival plan in place and stave off theadministrators.

“In essence, the key to avoiding administration is to put in place the measures yourself thatthey would instigate,” he says. Plimsoll cites three options for companies to survive and bewell-placed to capitalise when the market picks up.

Cut costs now: This is not easy; it means the company must accept it will be a smallerenterprise and job losses will generally be part of the plan. It then needs to look at a survivalplan and adopt the mindset of a receiver, cutting out non-profitable contracts, reducingoverheads and also renegotiating with key suppliers. The objective must be to reduce the levelof debt.

Sell the company or look for an investor: Despite the doom and gloom in themarket, this option should not be ruled out. 537 firms identified in the sector have cash tospend and could easily afford to finance a purchase out of cash. The 139 danger companiesare very vulnerable to an aggressive takeover, yet there could be a great benefit in selling up.A new owner would give the company time and resource to turn their performance around.Sadly again, this will inevitably involve job loses and reducing the size of the company torejuvenate the business.

Trade their way out: In the current economic climate this is the least likely strategy, most of these 139 companies have fairly long term problems, so its clear their currentbusiness is not competitive in the market and simply doing the same will not change anything.Combine this with the inability to raise extra finance and time is not on the side of thisapproach. Only a few of the ‘Danger’ companies have this as a viable option.

Sponsored by Georgian Carpets, the 53rd Kidderminster Carpet ManufacturersNational Golf Tournament, in aid of the Furnishing Trades Benevolent Associationand Macmillan Cancer Support, takes place at Kidderminster Golf Club on Tuesday12th and Wednesday 13th May 2009. The popular event, which last year raised£26,000 for the two charities, is the second largest fundraising event for the FTBA.

Day One is a four ball team event while Day Two is a two ball team event. There isalso a dinner at the Granary Hotel in Kidderminster in the evening of Tuesday 12thMay. Cost is £50 for one day and £80 for both days. The dinner is £30 a head.

The new Chairman Rupert Anton said: “While everyone knows about the goodwork of Macmillan, the FTBA is less well known but no less important to us in thecarpet industry. Created by the industry for the industry, it is the only charityexclusively dedicated to helping those who are, or who have been, involved with thefurnishing, carpet and allied industries, and who through no fault of their own findthemselves facing unexpected or financial hardship.

“It has over 300 long term beneficiaries and the financial support received fromindividual companies is critical to the work that the FTBA is able to do on behalf ofthe industry. Over the past 10 years the FTBA has made grants in excess of £1million. It cannot go on providing this level of support without the encouragementand backing of our great industry. I know market conditions are testing but it isvery much business as usual for us.”

For details on how to play in this year’s tournament or indeed sponsorship, pleasecontact Rupert Anton on 01562 747 359 or [email protected].

UBM-Live (formerly CMPi) was named CorporateSupporter of The Year for “actively supporting theFTBA over many years by way of corporatedonations, fund raising activities and the involvementof senior executives’ time and efforts to support the

charity.” The award was received on behalf of the company by event director Andy Vaughan.

Said FTBA interim chief executive Nigel Blake, who presented the citations: “The criteria for these awards areprecise and demanding and it is our directors and trustees who decide on the winners and in both cases thedecision was unanimous.
