Born in the east end of London half
a mile from West Ham United
Football ground, with a passion for
sport and music, at 14 David was
already playing the drums at
functions with his uncle and a local
fife and drum marching band.
Leaving school he started working
in a drawing office but keptdaydreaming out of the office
window... left to become eventually
an office boy and trainee reporter
for the London office of Australian
consolidated press in Fleet Street.
David took up photography and
eventually became the A.C.P. news royalty and fashion
photographer covering Europe and the Middle East, while
always looking for humourous photos.
David also worked with and for Lady Tryon taking her own familyphotographs, then joined the Daily Sketch for its last two years. He
then went and worked for the Daily Mail and most other Fleet
Street newspapers and magazines until joining the Mirror Group
newspapers. After working for both The Sunday and Daily Mirror
he then went on to become Chief photographer for the Sunday
People.
David continues to play with various bands and over the years has
played with many stars. He was asked to join the new Skeekers as
their drummer in the 70s, but decided to stay in Fleet Street, his
first true love.
David now continues to work for the nationals while writing and
compiling new books... well known in the newspaper world for his
zany ability for humourous and appealing pictures.

Foreword by actress Vickie Michelle
In my career as a comedy actress and supporter of many
charities I know how important it is bringing a smile into
people’s lives.
From the two Ronnie’s show to Allo Allo laughter is often
the key to banish the blues. Over the past 40 years Fleet
Street photographer David Graves has used
his talent for spotting a humorous moment consistently.
He has noticed and recorded for our delight life’s funny
bazar and humorous side as he worked for all the national
newspapers and magazines.
As a friend and photographer his charm has persuaded meto allow myself to assist him in his zany and sometimes
hysterical situations, all in the name of comedy photographs
to the point of almost getting me arrested.
We always had fun with his brilliant ideas and photography,
it may be all in the eye but it brings a smile to the lips and I
hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I myself have.
