The Tallwood Tradition
While the TMC schedule is at its midpoint, I hope to
play golf deep into November and maybe December?
Seems only fair with all the rain we had at the
beginning of the season.
We recently had our Senior and Club Championships
– Congrats to all the winners. Next up is Parent /
Child and Member-Member, a great event and I
encourage ya’all to join the fun for the golf and the
Calcutta the Friday night before.
Service - the action of helping or doing work for
someone. We have a great group of members that
serve the TMC, on committees and some commit to
the serve on the Board of Directors. Please think
about getting more involved and serving TMC. You
will get more out of it that you put in, and it is Fun!
Pro-Officer Event -- As TMC President, I was invited
to this annual PGA event with our PGA Professional
Zac, the Pro-Officer Tournament. This year it was
held at Wampanoag CC in West Hartford. It was a
great day, except for my golf as I had just returned
from my summer vacation and was not in my usual
form, I was worse. It is a great event and I was
honored to represent Tallwood Men’s Club.
On-line Sign ups – We appreciate and request your
patience. If you have any issues using the system,
please reach out directly to Eric or Zac for a tee time.
The Pro-Shop staff can also take calls to sign you up if
there is an issue or you are not near a computer. The
technology glitches are Top priority and we hope to
have all resolved ASAP. These improvements will
benefit the TMC as we move forward.
Happy Summer!

Slow play
After a good start to the season, we have started to see a bit of slow play in the past few weeks.
Remember, a single slow foresome will slow up the whole golf course. So please pay attention to
keeping up with the group in front of you.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind.
* Plan your shot before you get to your ball
* Keep your pre-shot routine short
* Unless in a match play situation, play “ready golf “
* Play a provisional ball if you think your ball might be lost or out of bounds
* Go to your ball and prepare will others in your group are hitting
* Putt out short putts, don’t mark
Having to wait every shot can be frustrating, so let’s all try to keep things moving.

Social
The dog days of summer are here and the Social Calendar is heating up. Some of our best, fun
events are coming up and we hope to see many of you there.
Next up on July 28th is the popular Parent Child Tournament. This is a popular event where a
member can play with family member of a different generation. It will include 18, 9 and 4 hole
divisions. There will also be a putting division for kids and toddlers, which began last year, and
was a big success. The golf is followed by a fun cookout at the Pavilion that includes Hot Dogs,
Hamburgers and Kelly Dogs. Beer and soft drinks are also included. The registration form is
attached to this Newsletter and can also be completed online. Registration deadline is fast
approaching so don’t delay and send them in ASAP or contact the Pro Shop.
That will be followed up with the increasingly popular 2 Ball Open or Rib Open on August 18th. A
two-man better ball event with a barbeque after the event catered by Little Marks. Sure to include
ribs, pulled pork, beans and cole slaw, this is one you don’t want to miss. This tournament will be a
7:30 Shotgun start. Signups will be online.
Anyone interested in joining the Social Committee and supporting our club and events are
welcome to attend our meetings.

In September at the Fall Meeting we will be voting in the new Men’s Club Board of Directors.
Every position in the Board is up for election. As always we ask for and welcome all new comers
to the Board. Fresh ideas and new perspectives are what have kept the club ever changing into
what it is today. Be on the lookout for the nomination forms on the board outside the Pro Shop in
the coming weeks.
I also would like to remind all our members that now is the time to submit nominations for the
Distinguished Service Award (DSA). A nomination form with guidelines will be located on the
website homepage shortly. The board will be considering applications in September so please get
those nominations in ASAP.
See you out there,

July News from the Lesson Tee…
The lesson tee has been in full swing this month…no pun intended! I completed my US Kids
Certification in June, inspiring a few new games around the putting green. Perhaps my
favorite new game for 2018 is “Cow Pasture Pool.” You only need a few simple supplies to
play: Survey tape (or string), 4 tees, 2 sets of colored golf balls, and a designated “8-ball.”
Using the survey tape, create a “billiard table” around a hole on the putting green. Space the
different colored balls evenly around the hole (short, medium, and long putts for both
colors). Each player or team chooses a ball color. The objective is to hole all of your golf
balls and the 8-ball before your opponent. If a player sinks his putt, he continues to putt
until he misses. If he knocks his ball outside the boundary of the billiard table, he loses his
turn. A player may only putt a ball of his assigned color. However, he may attempt to knock
another player’s ball away from the hole.
In addition to simply having fun while practicing putting, games like Cow Pasture Pool enhance
the transfer effect of practice. What does this mean? Creating variability in practice increases
the likelihood that your performance in practice will transfer to the golf course. Too often
golfers practice in a blocked fashion…repeating the same shot, to the same target, with the
same club. This is helpful early in learning, but research shows it does little to improve
performance in play or competition. Key point…to get the most from a practice session,
consider not only what you are practicing, but also how you are structuring your practice
session.
Cow Pasture Pool and many other games
(battleship, pirates gold, long drive with
monster marshmallows) were used throughout
our three Junior Golf Academies. The teaching
staff coached 43 children in our academies this
summer. Many thanks to those who registered
their children and grandchildren. We have one
remaining Pee Wee Pro’s program on
Saturday, August 25 for children age 3-6. Check
out Eric Brigg’s niece during our Pee Wee Pro’s
program in June…look out LPGA Tour…Madeline
is heading your way!
Our LPGA*USGA Girls Golf program is only half-
way through our season and we already have
over 30 girls registered! Girls Golf is a bi-
monthly instructional program that runs
through October. All skill levels are welcome.
Larry and his crew work very hard every day to keep Tallwood in great shape. Did you know that
bug spray and sun block can damage grass? Check out what happened when someone sprayed
bug spray on the green of a nearby golf course…
Please remember to apply bug spray and sunblock in the
parking lot or on the cart path.
Thank you!

Pro’s Corner Hot Golf Topics
- The Open Championship is here to announce the Champion golfer
of the year. I know there will be a couple of you waking up nice and
early the next couple of days (I will be one of the for sure).
My Pick for this year’s Champion Golfer of the year will be Justin
Thomas… The reason I like JT is simple. He is really, really, really
due to have a great tournament. He is fearless and hits the ball a
mile. While guys are laying up I see him staying just aggressive
enough to win.
My 2 Longish shots to finish really well are Pat Perez and Brian
Harman.
- I want to give a huge congrats to all our club champions this year.
It is not easy to win a tournament with 4 rounds of stroke play. It
takes lots of concentration and some really practice and trust in your
game. Congratulations to our flight winners.
Championship – Nate Dong - 2 time winner
Flight A – Dave Nokes - 1st time winner
Flight B – Mark Dennis – 3 time winner
Flight C – John Guandalini - 3 time winner.
- The flight scope X3 has been used for many fittings and lessons. It
has been and amazing addition to the Pro Shop. Look out for Eric
and I to be on a tee box one Saturday to show all of you this great
piece of technology. Special orders have been coming in fast and it’s
been a very exciting year so far. As we finish up our (3) Jr Golf
Camps this coming week, we look forward to the upcoming Men’s
Club Events, the Parent Child, Member- Member and the 2 Ball
Open. If anyone needs a partner for the Member - Member please
call the pro shop. We will do our best to pair you up with another
member interested in playing.
-Many of you have seen our new faces in the Pro Shop. Please if
you haven’t already introduced yourselves to Emily and Hope
Sternat. They will mostly be working in the afternoons throughout
the summer until they return to college. Hope goes to the University
of Delaware and Emily goes to the University of Oregon.
