The Tallwood Tradition

Isn’t it supposed to be March that “comes in like a lion and

goes out like a lamb”? Not this year. Mother Nature

played a nasty trick on us over Memorial Day weekend,

causing the postponement of the Memorial Day tournament

and the unofficial start of the summer season.

Thanks to Tallwood Management for completing the new

deck and patio area adjacent to the clubhouse. It is a

beautiful addition and a great place to share a drink and

commiserate after a round. We could call Scotch Ball I the

unofficial “christening” of the area. After some stellar

couples golf, we enjoyed a great meal prepared by chefs

Greg Garcia and David “Whitey” Wolanin. Many thanks

to Greg Berger and his team (including his three daughters)

for a great afternoon!

Congratulations to the top finishers in the Father’s Day

tournament; Ross Fauteux and Brian D’Alessandro (Blue-

Gross), Thuc Le and Kim Aderman (Blue-Net) and Rod

Stack and Gary Greenwald in the White/Gold-Net division.

Congratulations to the top finishers in the weather-delayed

Memorial Day tournament; Brett Franklin and Aaron

Perillo (Blue-Gross), Larry Finucane and Garth Groves

(Blue-Net) and Pete Nysirios, Joe Dura and Kevin Wilson

Jr. in the White/Gold – Net division

Thanks also for the donations made to the Folds of Honor

charity which offers educational scholarships to the

children and spouses of fallen and disabled service

members.

Upcoming events include the Member-Guest, our premier

annual event on June 18 and 19, the Seniors (55+)

Championship on June 26 and 27 and Club Championship

qualifying on July 10 and 11. The Club Championship

final rounds will be played on July 17 and 18.

We will be observing the 50th anniversary of our Club in a

combined season-ending event on Saturday. October

23. Please plan to attend this special event. More to

come.

Tallwood Board of Directors

We all enjoy our competitive golf and social events at Tallwood. Obviously, this doesn't happen

without planning and management .That job is the responsibility of our Board of Directors. With my two

stints over the last twenty years, I've seen pretty much the same group of guys rotate through the board.

Going forward we are having some concerns.

1) We are losing these guys through retirement relocating and aging

2) We need new younger blood with fresh ideas and energy

Please consider joining us in continuing the great traditions at Tallwood.

We are putting a plan in place for potential new Board members to sit in on a meeting or two to see how

we operate and also to get mentoring for a position that might interest you.

Please contact me if you think you can help out. We need you.

Membership

I’d like to complain about people who constantly hold things up by complaining about people who

complain. It’s high time something was done about it!”

Present membership stands at 206 with 8 GHIN only additions. The BOD voted NOT to offer reduced

fees for Membership in 2021 after the Member-Guest this coming weekend. That is pretty much it for

this month. You wanted something else?

“You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little f-up maybe, but I'm funny

how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to f-in' amuse you? What

do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?” - Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) – 1990 flim Goodfellas

“And now for something completely different.” – Monty Python

To get serious for a moment......

Welcome to 2022. Wait too soon?

While most of you are still focused in on the present 2021 season the Men's Club Board has to look

forward to the 2022 season. The social committee has to be working on a venue for next year's

Member-Guest and Past President Joe Leblanc has to find willing participants for the 2022 Board of

Directors.

Saying that I hasten to add that there are over 200 members in the Men's Club. About a hundred or so

are very active participants in the events we run each weekend. There are 10 members on YOUR Board

of Directors. Therefore about 1 in twenty or about 5 percent of Men's Club members are actually

running the show.

This year several positions will be opening up and I am sure that the stampede of members eager to

serve will be underwhelming. I figure Joe Leblanc will be bombarded with applicants in the following

months to the point of complete and total boredom.

Wait, what? No one cares? We haven't held an actual election for any board member in God knows

when. So that just might be the case.

This isn't rocket science, and it doesn't take up all of your free time, people. Hell, if I can do it, there

should be little doubt that most anyone able to stand upright and string a bunch of words together into a

sentence can probably do just as well. If not better.

So, I am taking this chance to urge you to contact Joe Leblanc and get involved in the care and feeding

of the Men's Club. It seriously isn't all that hard and the future of Men's Club golf at Tallwood might

just depend on YOUR active participation in the future. Beyond what you do on the golf course.

“No one expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise, fear and surprise; two chief

weapons, fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency! Er, among our chief weapons are: fear, surprise,

ruthless efficiency, and near fanatical devotion to the Pope! Um, I'll come in again...”

Tournament

It was great to see such a fine turnout for the FATHER’S DAY event. Twenty-eight winners of

restaurant Gift Certificates get to share super accomplishments with their significant other. The

MEMORIAL DAY event this past weekend was a time for reflection of great lives lost too soon.

Coming very soon is the premier TMC event, the MEMBER/GUEST, followed by the SENIOR

TOURNAMENT the next weekend.

I’m VERY pleased to see more lower handicap individuals playing the WHITE Tees.

In addition, that has led to more players utilizing the GOLD Tees. Bottom line is that the game is

supposed to be enjoyable for all participants. Hitting shorter clubs into par fours means a better chance

for that elusive birdie. Play well and you will be rewarded with Pro Shop credit (or cash in some

instances), regardless of it’s for a NET ONLY payout. Money is money, it spends the same.

Social

Your Tallwood Men’s Club held the first Scotch Ball of the 2021 season on June 5th on a very warm

afternoon. There were 40 golfers, with an additional 7 dinner guests, on hand to enjoy the post round

Happy Hour, which included beer & wine as well as shrimp cocktail and other munchies, following by

the chicken/steak/salmon dinner selection, as prepared by our Executive Grill Masters – Dave “White-

Star” Wolanin and Greg “the Guru” Garcia. The event marked the inaugural use of our picnic area.

Many thanks to the contribution of many of our social committee members: Greg Berger (Event

Captain), Earl “the Pearl” Brown, Kim Aderman, Dave Rutz, Roger Celinski, Brett Sutherland,

Alan Flint, Gary Greenwald, Jim Bourn, Steve Liteplo, Paul Castanho, and your President – Bob

Wahlberg. Yes, it does take a village to throw a successful party! Of course, none of this would be

possible without the significant contribution of Allison and Eric from our Pro shop. Great Teamwork

everyone! The winning team of the 18 hole event was Alan Flint & Kim Orzech (Gross-78) and Mark

and Delores Morgano (Net-68). The winning team of the 9 hole event was Ryan Kirkpatrick & Meg

Fitzsimmons (Gross 44) and Greg and Dawn Garcia (Net 36). Congratulations to all winners and

participants! We're sure that more members would consider joining in on the fun if they knew what they

were missing.

We look forward, to our next Social event, the Member / Guest Tournament, scheduled for June 18

(Practice Round) and June 19th (The Main event). After the Friday practice round, starting at 5pm, Eric

will have a challenging putting competition set up on the practice green. There will also be a cookout

with “refreshments” to be served. These post round festivities are open to all members that wish to

show up and indulge. This high point Main event, captained by Scott Marshall and Mike

Peterson, will have an incredible menu prepared by Little Marks. At the writing of this article there are

still some openings, so invite a guest and get registered to ensure your place in this event.

We continue to observe all Covid-19 protocols to ensure the safety of all present.

See you at the 19th hole….

Dear Men’s Club Members,

The Golf season is in full swing. Make your tee time today and enjoy the golf course. The staff outside

has been working hard fixing tee boxes and sodding bunker areas. The 9th. Tee should be open any day.

The driving range will have the grass area will be open this week. With the warm weather here the golf

course is turning green and lush.

Tallwood Country Club has a new patio and awning that should be open in in the next few weeks.

Donna has some new menu items for everyone to try. Stop by for some cold beer and visit the friendly

staff.

Please place all orders soon because with golf being very popular new golf equipment is taking longer to

come in when ordered. The pro shop is getting new equipment and clothing every day. See Eric or

Allison for any special orders or any special requests. Use that Pro Shop Credit soon before everything

is out of stock.

Tallwood C.C. has a full repair shop to help with regripping and shaft repair with same day or the next

service. Check those old grips today.

Mastering Uphill & Downhill Lies

Although golf would be so much simpler if we could play all our shots from level lies, the

rolling hills and slopes add so much to the visual beauty of the game. Rather than curse

A common error with downhill lies is to stand

"level" often leading to a thin shot.

Ideally, a player tilts shoulders and hips parallel

to the slope leading to solid contact.

PGA Jr League is off and running for the 2021

season! We had our first match with Twin Hills

CC. It was a great experience for all of our

kids...meeting other junior golfers and learning to

compete. I was especially proud when several

parents of the other team commented that

Tallwood's team not only hit some great shots,

but that the kids were so friendly and polite.

Coach Allison and I are super proud of them!

Strategies to build a lasting love for the game with your junior golfer:

• May sound obvious, but sometimes folks forget...keep golf fun!

• When first starting, keep practice and play time short. Hit a small bucket of balls or spend 10

minutes around the putting green. Make a game of practice. How many 2 foot putts can you sink

in a row? Can you make a "camera pose" after each full swing?

• Play the 4-Hole loop at Tallwood in the early evening for only $10. It's a great way to sample golf

when you are first learning.

• After a round of golf, ask your children what they learned rather than what they shot. If they want

you to know, they will tell you their score.

• Grab a treat in the grill room to cap off your golf experience. When my children were young, I

always enticed them with a treat after golf. It's amazing what a kid will do for icecream!
