HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone! It is 2020, a new decade. I know I say (write) this a lot but time sure seems to be on a fast-track. Yikes. We will have some “new faces” as part of the squadron leadership. Michael Kohl is the Executive Officer elect, Carolyn Ahlemeier is the Assistant Administrative Officer elect, Nancy Sutton-Bell is the Assistant Education Officer elect and Mark Mazzone is the Member-At-Large elect. Thank you and welcome to each of them for stepping forward and donating their time and their experience to help guide our squadron during the 2020 year. Our squadron Finance Committee met and an adjustment was made, with consultation with our Financial Advisor, in our squadron investments so as to reap a slightly better return on our dollars. In December our Finance Committee gained one additional member, P/C Doy McPhail He will be a very valuable addition. The committee now consists of Bob Shaw, Chair, Steve Mortonson, Bill Behrens, Don Peterson, Doy McPhail and Ken Morris (ex officio). The 2019 Annual Meeting went very well and I especially appreciated all the active input from members at the meeting. That adds an element that is very, very good. Just a reminder the 2020 Squadron Membership Annual Meeting will be one month earlier, on the fourth Tuesday of October, on October 27, 2020. Please mark your calendars. P/C John Ragone is accepting payments for our Booster Program, which was discussed at the Annual Meeting. By membership vote the fee was raised to $10 per person (it has been $5.00 per person for the past 17 years). If you wish to participate please see the information elsewhere in this issue of the Tidings. At the Annual Meeting P/C Charlie Richardson received a special award for his 50-year anniversary of membership to the USPS. Continued in next column →

He received a special plaque and pin and a letter from the Chief Commander of USPS. Congratulations Charlie! On a personal note, a HUGE THANK YOU to all those that honored P/C Ron Terciak by attending the service for him (98 people attended) and/or attending the spreading of the ashes on the Gulf of Mexico (7 boats and 22 people). That thank you certainly extends, multiplied many times over, to those that offered me support and help – it was, and is, appreciated so much it is beyond the normal descriptive words.

Regarding the semi-rebranding underway by USPS National, San Carlos Bay Sail & Power Squadron name remains as is and USPS remains as is. Michael Kohl is completing that which is necessary with the State of Florida so as to formalize our use (DBA - Doing Business As) of America’s Boating Club Fort Myers Beach. That name is in addition to that which we already have.

Just a reminder – if you have any changes (name, address, telephone, boat, MMSI, etc.), please contact Wayne Berger ([email protected]) ASAP as he is finalizing the 2020 Squadron Directory. Be Safe! Be Active! --Bill Behrens Commander ■

Happy New Year! In January, our Squadron has two educational opportunities open to you. There’s the Instructor Development class starting on Wednesday, January 8 at 7 PM in the Squadron Classroom. This class certifies you to teach in our ABC class and is offered at no charge. Material is all downloaded from the USPS website.

Charlie Richardson will be beginning the Piloting class on Tuesday, January 14 at 2:00 PM in the Squadron Classroom. If you are interested in this class, please sign up by January 1 as materials need to be ordered.

For either of these classes, you can sign up on line on the USPS Education Website, or you can send me an email and I’ll add you to the roster. My email is [email protected].

Also, I’d like to alert you to three USPS seminars that will be coming your way this season. We will be offering Paddle Smart before our Squadron’s February meeting and Hurricanes and Boats before the March meeting. These seminars will be offered at Shell Point from 3:30-5:30 in the afternoon of the meeting. Space is limited and sign-up is required and is available through the USPS website. Also, for anyone who might be interested in the Weather seminar, that will be given at the District 22 Spring Conference on April 4. These 2-hour seminars are a great way to continue your boating education without having to make a multi-week commitment (or having to study for an exam!!!) Finally, this is my last SEO column. At our Change of Watch, I’ll be passing the torch back to Charlie Richardson, from whom I picked it up several years ago. He’ll be assisted in the Education Department by Nancy Bell. I want to thank all of you who have contributed to our Squadron’s educational work during my tenure, most especially to Charlie, Continued top of next column →

and also, to Bob Johnson, Doy McPhail, Dave Lum, Al Ponzio, and John Swenson, as well as our late friends, Ron Terciak and Jerry Blumenfeld. Thanks also to Bob Shaw who has taken on the Local Waters class and to the many people who facilitated our education program by registering students, grading exams, and serving as helpers during our Local Waters class. As I take up responsibilities at the District 22 level, I still expect to be involved with ABC and invite others of you to join me!!! ■

Update: Remember the Change of Watch is Saturday January11 at The Landings. Pleas attend!

Lighting the Way

In this age of gps, digital charts and depth finders it’s hard to believe that the first aids to navigation were bonfires on a beach. Through the ages many changes have occurred to provide safe passage on the water. Lighthouses have been keeping sailors safe for thousands of years and still do so today.

The first known lighthouse, the Pharos of Alexandria (Egypt) was built in the 3rd century BC. It was over 300 feet tall and survived for over 1500 years. Continued on page 8 column 1

From the Exec Officer Lt/C Charlie Richardson, JN.

This is my final article as your Executive Officer for the 2019 Squadron year. We participated in two boat shows: The Bonita Springs show in March and the Fort Myers show in November. Thank you to all those members who helped make these shows successful for our Squadron. Special thanks to Commander Bill who transported all our booth setup and supplies to both shows. We also participated in “Safe Boating Week” with a proclamation from the Mayor of Fort Myers Randy Henderson. Our Vessel Safety Inspectors did an amazing job. Over 353 vessels were inspected. John Swenson alone performed 103 while Al Ponzio inspected 87. Great work by all of our inspectors! We had great publicity thanks to the efforts of P/C Ron Terciak who tirelessly in spite of his illness, placed articles in the newspapers and kept our Facebook page up dated with photos and information. We will miss Ron………. Next year I will once again be your Squadron Education Officer. Boating education is my favorite activity in our Squadron. I really enjoy teaching ABC and Piloting and assisting students in our Local Waters classes. I will have an excellent assistant this year. Nancy Bell is a former educator and should fit in nicely. I look forward to working with her and listening to her ideas on how to improve the way we handle our classes. Bob Shaw will be teaching our Local Waters class. Bob is an experienced boater and will add a great deal to our most popular class. Lastly, I want to thank John Swenson for his work in registering our students and providing the class rosters. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. P/C Charles Richardson, JN ■

It is VESSEL SAFETY CHECK time again. The VSC is an annual event, and it allows those that avail themselves of the free safety check to be assured they have all the necessary safety equipment on board their vessel. It also ensures items that have an expiration date are not expired and are valid, such as their fire extinguishers and flares. This squadron service is, or course, available to all members of our squadron and is available to the public as well, such as your friends and neighbors. If one’s boat does not pass, there is no punitive action taken, and it is not reported to any agency. Once the item(s) that needed attention is corrected we will re-visit and re-do the VSC and, when one’s boat passes, issue the current year safety sticker. Contact P/C Ron Terciak to schedule your VSC. ■

Earthquakes eventually destroyed it. On the coast of northern Spain, the Tower of Hercules, a lighthouse built in the 2nd century, is still in operation today. Worldwide lighthouses keep working day and night. Many no longer need keepers as they use modern technology to operate.

In this country the Boston Light locate in the outer harbor, has been keeping ships safe as they head into Boston since 1716. Originally it was lit with tallow candles. Today it uses two 2 million candlepower, lights to throw a beacon 27 nautical miles out to sea.

ClCloser to home, every night you can see the automated Sanibel Island Light flashing steadily in the dark. Today the U.S. Coast Guard maintains more than 48,000 buoys, beacons and electronic aids covering more than 25,000 miles. They "keep the light burning" in a modern fashion. Intergovernmental agencies also work to make the waterways around the world as safe as possible. They don't ask about religion, race, nationality, sex or age. They just work together, as mariners have done for centuries, to make the world's.waterways safer for everyone. In the new year let’s all follow their example when at sea or ashore. ■

Trip to Key West Michael Kohl

Trip to Key West Michael Kohl

Continued from previous column

The Continuing Adventures of the JustUs (Key West Trip)

Finally. After a year of wanting to make this trip and even planning the trip in the Cruise Planning class we were leaving on the JustUs for Key West. December 4: We left the dock at 9:30 am and went to Moss Marine to top off the diesel tanks. Cleared Matanzas Pass at approximately 11:15 and headed for Marco Island. Arrived at Factory Bay at around 2:15PM and went to anchor. I depressed the “down” button for the windlass. It went “click” then nothing. I deployed the backup anchor and we settled in. December 5: Weighed anchor (the manual way) and departed Factory Bay at 7:30 am. Hit the turning mark South of Marco and headed for Marathon. Around 10 miles later the boat lurched and lost all headway. Apparently, we grabbed a crab pot line and separated the shaft from the transmission. We radioed Towboat US and they arrived on the scene after we spent 2 hours rolling around on the Gulf. Arrived at the Marco Island Marina at 3:00 PM and the Dockmaster called a diver to come and help us. The diver arrived an hour later and inspected the running gear. He then reattached the shaft and pronounced us fit to travel. We had dinner on the boat and prepared for an early departure. December 6: Departed Marco Island Marina at 6 am in the dark. The Gulf was calm, and we made Marathon by 4:30 PM. The mooring field was filled, and the Captain refused to anchor on the outside, so we fueled up and took a slip at Marathon Marina. Had a lovely dinner in their restaurant and took a long walk with Sharky. Continued in next column →

December 7: Departed Marathon for Key West at 8:30 am and traveled the Atlantic for the first time since October 1, 2018 when we started the trip to Florida. The Various blue colors of the ocean were spectacular. Arrived at the Oceanside Marina on Stock Island at 12:30 PM. Assembled the bikes and rode into downtown Key West for lunch and to explore. Our sailing friends from New York met us in Downtown later that day and we all walked around, caught the sunset at Mallory Square and watched the annual Key West Holiday Parade down Duval Street. Very interesting. December 8: Robin lounged by the pool while I diagnosed the windlass. It appeared to have a dead solenoid. I rode my bike to West Marine and found that unless I wanted a Yeti Cooler I was out of luck. A helpful employee suggested that I try Key West Marine Hardware on Monday. After lunch on the boat Robin led me on a bike ride that went all the way around the Key West Island. We stopped at a grocery store and filled in some provisions then went back to the boat, cleaned up and took the Marina shuttle to town to meet our friends for dinner at a Cuban restaurant. December 9: I rode into town and found Key West Marine Hardware. Found a compatible solenoid that was beefier, and weather proofed for $50 less than the Lewmar. Rode back to the boat, installed it and, voila, the windlass was back in operation. Said goodbye to our friends, rode my bike around Stock Island then took the shuttle to town to walk around, catch the sunset and have dinner with my cousin and her husband who arrived that day. Trip to Key West Michael Kohl

Continued from page 9 column 2

December 10: Rode bikes to town and did some exploring and sightseeing. Went to the fort, Hemmingway house, the lighthouse, Truman’s Florida White house and went for a walk on the beach. Rode back to the boat and cleaned up. I attended a faculty meeting by Skype. Caught the shuttle to town with my cousin, watched the sunset (yet again) and walked Duval Street. Had dinner and retired to the boat. December 11: It rained all night and into the morning. There was a break in the weather around 11am so we left Oceanside Marina for Marathon. Somewhere between Key West and Marathon we grabbed another crab pot line, but it didn’t stop us this time. We pulled into Marathon Marina, tied up and I went for a swim under the boat. I unwound about 25’ of polypropylene line from the prop and shaft!! After a shower we walked up to US1 and found a nice place with live music where we ate dinner. December 12: Left Marathon Marina at 7:15 am. The gulf was pretty rough, and we plowed through 3-5-foot waves on the nose. Waves were breaking over the bow and we couldn’t see all of the crab pot buoys. So, of course, we grabbed another line but did not stop. As we got further North the sea calmed and by the time we got to Marco Island it was calm. I dropped anchor (with the windlass) at 4:30 pm in Factory Bay. We took the dog to Rose Marina in the dingy for his constitutional. While we were there, we got drenched in a downpour that flooded the parking lot. We returned to the boat, hung up our soggy clothes, had dinner and went to bed. Continued in next column →

Trip to Key West Michael Kohl

December 13: Took the dog to shore at Rose Marina and got coffee there since the generator stopped working in the middle of coffee making. Returned to the boat, put away the dingy and motor and weighed anchor at 10am. Had an uneventful motor in calm seas to Matanzas Pass and stopped at Moss to fill up. Missed the 100-gallon discount by 4 gallons! Returned to our slip at 3:00PM, put the boat away and went home to find our condo was flooded. That is the subject of another story. I had a great trip despite the problems. Robin said that she enjoyed most of the trip but that as far as she was concerned, it was a once in a lifetime trip! Time to start planning the Spring Break trip. ■

Little Loop Cruise Lt. Bob Johnson, AP

The Johnson’s take Vigorish on the Little Loop I thought members might be interested in hearing about our recent cruise aboard our 1999 Bayliner 4087, 40’Cockpit Motor yacht named Vigorish. Last year we went to the Dry Tortugas with an experience boating couple. These good friends agreed to go this year on the “Little Loop.” This Trip was originally planned for Sept. 2017, but H Irma had other plans! We provisioned Vigorish knowing we planned to stay in Marinas, eat Breakfast and lunch on board, but go to a restaurant for dinner when possible. We departed Ft Myers Shores, just downstream of Franklin Lock on Friday, Nov. 8. Continued on page 11 column 1

Running about 1200 rpm we made 8.5 knots, went through Franklin (2’), Ortona (8’), and Moore Haven (2’) Locks before entering the Lake O rim canal and docking at Roland Martin Marina in Clewiston . You may recall we had no cold fronts through South Florida through early November. But Friday night changed that with very heavy rain and winds. We delayed our trip a day waiting for the winds and Lake O to calm down! Roland Martin Marina has nice facilities, a Tiki bar/restaurant. But on this weekend, very loud live music right next to our slip until 11:30! Sunday, we departed with 10-15 knot winds to cross Lake O. It was easy to follow the markers and had no problems cruising at 16 knots. We went straight through Mayaka Lock (no level change) and cruised at 8.5 knots to St Lucie Lock. After several unanswered radio calls, they finally let us in with about a 12-15 foot drop! We stayed at the Harborage Yacht Club in Stuart. It had just finished a multi-million $ renovation after damage from Irma! Wonderful facilities with great restaurant next door. In order to prevent delays with our reservations, we decided to skip a port (Lake Worth) and go directly to the Loggerhead Marina in Hollywood, Fl. We took the ICW and with a clearance of 18’, fit under most of the bridges. So many amazing mansions, one more fabulous than the next all down the ICW. Then the Yachts! Many in the 60-100+’ and very striking! We cruised when we could due to the longer mileage. However, there were many SLOW zones, many idle zones by bridges, then area where you could go 25 mph but with a maximum 15” wake! A slow speed zone for us! Continued in next column →

The folks at Loggerhead (Suntex) leave at 4:00! We had our slip assignment and arranged for a shower door key under a mat. We arrived after dark to a Marina we hadn’t visited-not a great plan! Fortunately, we had a Marina layout, found the right dock, squeezed between two large cats on the T dock ends, and gently backed into our slip-the only vacant one with other boats protruding past the 30’ piling! I guess not seeing much kept us calm (at least me)! Here we met my brother who took us to a nice local restaurant since there are none within walking distance! Tuesday, we departed early again and completed the ICW past Miami. We were delayed about 30 minutes twice at low bridges since we were mostly at slow or idle speed and several open only every 30 minutes! We finally made it to Biscayne Bay and were able to cruise for a while, headed for Key Largo! After almost taking the only markers in Biscayne Bay on the wrong side, we made it south to Card Sound where we were told we could take Anglefish Creek pass outside to Hawks Channel, since we were headed to Mari a Del Mar with its entrance on the Channel. The pass was a little tight but had good water. We had a very smooth cruise down Hawks Channel, often seeing Bottom details through the crystal clear water! We arrived at Key Largo, followed all the rules entering and announcing our position in the Channel. This is to keep boats from surprising you at “ Crash Corner”! We stayed at this wonderful Marina 2 nights and went on a great snorkel trip aboard a sailing cat for 2 reef snorkels followed by sailing on the day our second cold front arrived! They also have a great restaurant on site! Continued on page 12 column 1

We planned to spend the next 2 nights in Marathon. However, looking at the weather forecast, winds and waves looked good in Florida Bay for Friday but much worse after the 3rd cold front due Friday evening. We decided to cancel our second night and head for Skipjacks Marina in Boot Key Harbor in Marathon. Although the north winds were up from the previous front, we were well protected in Hawks Channel by the Keys and had a nice trip to Marathon. The Marina is well protected, had a nice pool, but is pretty tired looking. When we arrived, we saw the forecast for Friday was low winds, but big storms from Fort Myers to Marco to Florida Bay to Key West. It wasn’t moving very fast so we decided we had to stay for the original 2 days. On these trips, you need to leave a few extra days for weather. Unfortunately, when it looked like we would return early to Ft Myers (Saturday), I booked a flight on Sunday to travel to PA to help a good friend put a roof on his new house/art studio! Saturday and Sunday winds and waves looked high. However, by hugging the coast by Cape Sabel then entering Marco Island the “back” way, I thought we could avoid the 3-5’ waves forecast for the gulf. We departed Boot Key early, enamored by all the boats at moorings and on the hook, when suddenly a shutter hit the boat! I pulled the power, noticed the depth at 1.8’, saw the mud trail behind me, but luckily continued moving. Guess what! I was on the wrong side of those 2 red markers approaching the defunct bridge! A guy who has taught how many Local Waters Courses? It can happen. Continued in next column →

As we departed the harbor and increased speed sensing carefully for vibration, all was well! We proceeded through Moser Channel then turned northeast toward Cape Sable and the Everglades, Thousand Islands, etc. The winds were moderate, waves only 1-2’ so no problems for the first 4 hours. At Middle Cape, we noticed brown water ahead, but being well outside the marker, wasn’t concerned. As the depth dropped from 7’ to 5 then 4, I quickly turned away from shore and eventually ran into 7’ depth again and proceeded toward Marco. About 30 miles out, the winds started gusting 20-30 knots and the seas quickly built to 2-3 feet. Not terrible but the wind was whipping our canvas and we were taking significant water over the bow. Since I have a Hard Top and complete enclosure at the flybridge helm, we remained comfortable while we approached the back entrance to Marco. I had checked several sources that said my 3.5’ draft could pass, but there were some tricky areas. I called Boat tow US for some local knowledge and was assured I could make it IF I paid close attention to the markers. First problem, after passing the Center Channel marker, I headed up the wrong channel for a couple markers. Getting a little tight but was able to return to the prime market. However, heading toward the next marked would take me over Coon Key so we proceeded slowly across 4’ water past the island then found good water as we proceeded past Goodland. We had 5 chart devices running and even with a few missing markers, reached the main Marco Bridge with no problem. At this point, Marker red 26 marks a hard-right turn along the south end of the Bridge, where you must parallel the bridge as you approach the center. Continued on page 13 column 1

Problem is, that marker is gone! Thanks to Cruiser Net info and all the devices that agreed, we got through the bridge and headed for Factory Bay. We stayed at the Marina at Factory Bay. An awesome facility where we could walk to Snook Inn for dinner! The winds eased a bit overnight and we departed early out Marco Pass to an angry but decreasing Gulf of Mexico. Waves were 2-4 with 15 knot winds from the NW so I knew it would get better as I approach San Carlos Bay and Sanibel. We continued up the smooth river finally relaxed in our home waters. I had estimated our arrival at home dock about 11:00 am, but we were November 17! Slow zone and Idle from before the Railroad Bridge past the Power Plant! So, about 11:30 we arrived. Of course, I had to leave at 12:30 to catch a 2:00 plane to PA. Oh, and had to unload basics and pack a new bag! Well, we made it, had a great adventure, and would recommend this trip. Hope you don’t get 3 cold fronts in 9 days if you go! Bob Johnson AP ■ See pictures & chart/map on pages 13 & 14

Our Public Classes

We offer several classes to increase boater knowledge and skills. These classes are open to the public (membership is not required). The classes are presented as a public service by the Squadron and are

taught by experienced Squadron members America’s Boating Course 3rd Edition ® Is our basic boating class. The class will cover the basics of boat handling, PWCs, required equipment, navigation aids and rules, and dealing with emergencies. It will provide instruction and examination for laws and regulations of the State of Florida. The course is a total of 8 hours spread over two days. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "America's Boating Course 3rd Edition".

Local Waters – Local Charts Is our course for boaters in the Ft. Myers area. The Local Waters class is directed toward new boaters and boaters new to the area, as well as those who wish to learn chart reading. Using Chart 11427, boaters will learn some of the basics of navigation in the Fort Myers Area. Students would bring their own copies of the chart. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "Local Waters - Local Chart". Using GPS GPS has become a common tool for navigation. However, using GPS on the water is distinctly different from a moving map display in your car. This 2-3-hour seminar explains the principles of waypoint navigation which you will use. It then shows you how to use the buttons on your GPS and how to relate the GPS to your charts. Using VHF & VHF DSC Marine Radios This class is essential for those with a 'new' radio or those planning to buy a new radio. DSC is operational in Fort Myers. You need to register your radio and learn how it's different. We also cover standard VHF operations. Read a detailed description of the course. Paddle Smart This seminar is intended for those interested in Paddle sports or are considering the purchase of a Kayak, Canoe or other Paddle sport equipment. Read a detailed description of this course by clicking on "Paddle Smart". Hurricanes & Boats This is a mini-seminar. It covers how to select a location and prepare your boat for a hurricane.
