by Jak WilliamsonAs the sun sets on Poacher 2013, this special edition con-tains a photo collage of the highlights of Poacher and a review of the Closing Cer-emony. The even-ing’s celebrations began by Scouts and Guides parad-ing their dismantled gates, fl ags and mascots from each sub camp around the showground, fi nally congregating in the main arena ready to start their goodbye celebrations.

Once again the guys from ‘Stiff & Stilted’ helped in creating a party atmosphere

along with the vuvu-zelas. The Scouts and Guides were “booming with excite-ment” according to Charles, our Junior Reporter. After all participants had taken their place in the main arena, the fi nalists of Poachers’ Got Talent took to the stage – the fi nal was electric with Phillippa, an Explorer Scout being crowned the ultimate winner.

After the excitement of the Poacher’s Got Talent, the lowering of the international fl ags occurred, along the World Scout and Guide fl ags. These were followed by

Poacher’s fl ag, which was lowered with great sadness, but thankfully Daizy and his gang were right on cue to bring the Showground back to life with some dance classics and a live band.

The night was topped off with a electrifying fi rework display for all to see – the dis-play was intensifi ed with the Showground all singing along to formally close the jamboree!

Dan, an Explorer from Cardiff told us that the closing cer-emony was “amazing, I have had such an

amazing time – I’m just sad that this means Poacher is over.”

Before we said our goodbyes, we asked Emily, a Young Leader from Mether-ingham what her best experience of Poach-er 2013 has been. She told us “meeting lots of new people, making new friends and dressing up as an alien!”

And now the candle of Poacher 2013 has been blown out, from all the staff here at Poacher, we hope you have had an amazing time and have a safe journey home.

Poacher goes out with a bang!

by Tom, Boston ExplorersOn Thursday evening, I competed in the Poacher’s Got Talent Grand Final. It was a brilliant experience where I sang Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley. I would like to thank the whole audience for clap-ping and dancing along, it gave me a real confi dence boost. The other con-testants were absolutely fantastic, especially Phil-

lipa who sung a brilliant rendition of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from Les Misera-bles. I must say she did not put a note wrong and she was worthy of a top three place to sing in the Closing Ceremony. An-other worthy fi nalist was Sam Foster who made a risky decision of changing his song from Bruno Mars to Olly Murs. The risk obvi-ously worked as he sang

by Danni SouterPoacher had a very spe-cial visitor yesterday, Tony Lundon from Liberty X! He was here with the Bright Sparks project to judge Poacher’s Got Talent. The Bright Sparks project is a music and talent search to create an album that represents UK Scouting. I went to speak to him to fi nd out some more infor-mation.

He told me that “Poacher is brilliant, I am really impressed with the organi-sation. The activities are great. It’s lovely to see that there is so much to do.” When he was younger he used to be a Cub and said “I camped once as a Cub. It wasn’t too far away - I think it was actually in a local park. All I know is I was very excited!” When I asked what he thought about Poacher’s

Got Talent, he told me “I haven’t seen that many acts yet but I’m really look-ing forward to judging the fi nal tonight. The standard of talented people is phe-nomenal”.

I asked if he’d had a chance to try anything of the activities however he hadn’t actually had a chance to. He said “I really want to have a go but we are just too busy here at the Poacher’s Got Talent tent. Maybe I can have a go next time!”.When I asked if he would go to another jamboree he re-plied with “I performed at one with Liberty X 7 years ago, I’ve also been to a few already with the Bright Sparks project. However, if I could, I would go to them all- they have the perfect atmosphere for tal-ent searching”.

Tony’s here for talent

the song perfectly and the highlight was the rap in the middle. I was another fi nalist and I was very overwhelmed with joy and shock as the other acts were brilliant and some of them defi nitely deserved a top three place and the judge’s decision was very tough but the judge’s deci-sion is fi nal! To all of the losing fi nalists, keep going as you are all brilliant and you should never give up!

Poacher’s Got Talent: Backstage

by Emily CrookesHere, on the fi nal day of our amazing Poacher adventure, we were lucky to be joined by BBC Look North, who were fi lming all the action on site for a segment on Friday night’s news. Simon Spark, video journalist for the programme, along with his trusty video camera and tripod, captured our Poacher campers taking part in a whole variety of different activities all over the showground.

Simon ensured he fi lmed all the Guides and Scouts enjoying themselves; for example, Amy from 1st Immingham Guides on the High Ropes who said “it was so much fun; I didn’t even realise I was being fi lmed at fi rst”. Becca, Vic-toria and Leader Jemma, from Bourne District de-scribed their experience on the extreme zipwire in front of the lens as “ama-zeballs” and that “my par-ents will be so jealous!”

The comical element would defi nitely come from

Bobby, from Bourne Dis-trict, who embraced her inner Toybox and dressed up as a whoopie cush-ion. Simon interviewed her in the unique outfi t, where Bobby explained “I’ve enjoyed the activities and camping out with my friends!”. When we asked her how she felt about potentially being on TV, she exclaimed “I’ve never been on TV before; it was so weird to be interviewed. If I see myself on TV, I’ll be ecstatic!”

Simon was also able to visit the Survival Chal-lenge area, where they were skinning rabbits for dinner! There were several interviews and great shots taken around the Archery and Friction with Fire before moving around to the Bungee Trampolines where Mary, from 1st Es-her District described her experience of being fi lmed whilst performing various fl ips on the trampolines as “my personal highlight of Poacher!” Some of the campers then gathered near the Main

Arena where Simon fi lmed his introductory shot for the segment, with audi-ence participation from the girls and boys who had to enthusiastically shout “NOOO!” when Simon asked if Poacher was just ‘lots of knot-tying’. They then all shouted together “Coming up later in the programme … join us for Poacher 2013!” before erupting into a chorus of cheers. Sam and Isobel from 1st Bassingham ex-plained “it was really good and we liked all the shout-ing!”

Hovercrafts were up next on Simon’s videoing list, enlisting Mollie from 1st Burgh Guides and Bailey from 1st Skegness Scouts to have a go on the noisy but incredible activity. Bai-ley told us “it’s exciting to be fi lmed … all my family watch the news!”

Simon concluded his visit by saying “I’ve absolutely loved my day at Poacher and wish I could stay the whole week”. Thank you to BBC Look North for com-ing along to visit the excit-ing world of Poacher!

GLADRAGS

by Catherine SharpYesterday, Poacher had a visit from members of the Red Arrows Blue Team! The public relations manager, the offi cial photographer and the

Flying Offi cer came down to visit Louth District, who won the gateway competition with their model of a Lancaster bomber!

The guests were very

impressed with the model of the Lan-caster, especially as this year is the 70th Anniversary of the Dambusters raid.

by Charles, 7th Lin-coln ScoutsAs most people know the entrance com-petition has been underway and loads of brilliant Scouts and Guides beautifi ed their entrance to try and win. One en-trance, although they didn’t win, caught my eye as soon as I walked past the fi nished product. 1st

Highfi eld Scout group created an amazing fortress over the short period of 2 and a half days. I interviewed Matt Kerry, a Young Leader from the brilliant troop, who told me that he was extremely proud of his troop and that the structure was con-sisted of only wooden poles, rope and metal

plates for support. After loads of camp-ers took advantage of having this amaz-ing fort by playing on it, one child from 1st Highfi eld said they also wanted a swing to play on. This was an additional 1 day build. Matt explained “The hardest part was defi nitely the bridge but our favourite part for both us to assem-ble and the chil-dren to play on was defi nitely the slide”. I could not imagine how hard it would be to build but when I asked them they responded by saying it was quite hard.

Top Ten Packing Away Tips

1) Make sure you take everything home with you - you don’t want to fi nd you’ve lost a sock!2) Do a litter pick before you leave, the Site Services team will not enjoy picking up your sweet wrappers.3) Pack your bags the night before, this means you can stay in bed a little longer!4) Collect all the contact details from the new friends you have met here at Poacher!5) If you have lost anything, head over to Galapagos and check out the lost property. 6) Pack away properly, it can be a pain hav ing to sort it all out when you get home!7) If anything is broken, label and fi x it before you pack away at home to stop you taking it to your next camp.8) It is too late to do any activities, but take a walk around the site - maybe you can fi nd someone to swap a badge with.9) Remember to thank your leaders, they will have worked harder than you know!10) Make sure you get yourself to Poacher 2017!

by Catherine SharpToybox has held a camp fi re! The camp-fi re proved very popu-lar with the Scouts and Guides on the sub camp – most people went, includ-ing Poacher partici-pants from other sub

camps.Campfi re songs and skits were performed, both traditional and new. Some groups even led their own songs!

Awards were also given to some Scouts

and Guides for chal-lenge badges. Sub camp awards were given for the best dressed unit and most helpful unit amongst others!

A big thank you to Toybox for organising this event.

WHEELS N WINGSby Catherine SharpWheels ‘n’ Wings challenged their sub-camp to a game of Wheel of Fortune!

Two teams entered and completed a se-ries of challenges to win, including hook-ing a duck blind fold-ed, do a paper plane race, fi nd planes and cars dotted around the subcamp, and fi nd wheels in goo.

The teams that par-ticipated had a really great time. Thanks to Wheels ‘n’ Wings for organising this activ-ity!

by Daniel BrockThroughout the week, Poacher’s external press cover-age has been huge, with such visitors as The Echo, Lincs FM, and BBC Radio Lin-colnshire. Yesterday, however, ITV came along to join in with the action! The ITV programme Calendar came along to pro-duce a report on the past week of fun ac-tivities which have of-fered the participants of Poacher 2013 new challenges and

thrilling adventures! Reporter Victoria, and her cameraman David toured the site chatting to Scouts and Guides and see-ing for themselves what Poacher 2013 is all about. Young people around the site jumped at the opportunity to get on the television, with one girl be-ing so keen she got distracted and ended up spiralling off the go-kart track! The pair from ITV were clearly amazed at the

level of preparation and care that has gone into planning Poacher, and loved the accessibility and diversity of the event. Victoria commented: “I can see how much fun all of these peo-ple are having! The event scale is so impressive too. I just can’t wait until my son’s old enough to attend Beavers – I might even put him on the waiting list now!”
