HENRY CHAFFEE - CONNECTICUT PATRIOTANCESTOR OF JOSHUA CLAUSSEN

Henry Chaffee, 6th great-grandfather of Joshua Claussen, of Windsor, Commecticut, was involved in the opening moments of the American Revolution. In April of 1775 he joined the other men of his Connecticut community in answering the “Lexington Alarm” in response to the British moving on Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. He marched from Woodstock to the relief of Boston, serving five days.

Chaffee later served with the same militia company from May until October 1775, and served in the company of Lt. Paine Converse in 1776.

TETER NAVE - NORTH CAROLINA PATRIOTANCESTOR OF DALLAS MCCLOUD

Since our Compatriots have already heard about Leonard Bowers, ancestor of our McCloud men, we thought that we might introduce you to some more Patriot ancestors in this family’s tree. There are at least three more confirmed Patriots in the McCloud line. We will introduce two others when Dallas’ two older brothers “officially” become members.

The first is the father-in-law of the Patriot you met last month, Leonard Bowers. His name was Teter Nave. He was Dallas McCloud’s 6th great-grandfather.

When the mountains and valleys of East Tennessee were covered with virgin timber and the land still abounded with buffalo and elk and the proud Cherokee Warrior still roamed his hunting grounds, the first trickle of white men flowed into the valley of the Watauga. Along the paths worn down by the hooves of generations of buffalo, these settlers came to form what would be known as the Watauga Settlement.

Among these first Indian traders and long hunters was Teter Nave, who was to be the first white settler in the Siam Valley of present day Carter County, Tennessee.

Teter Nave, whose German name was actually Dieter Naff, was born in 1735 in Pennsylvania. He was married to Ann Vanderpool in Augusta County, Virginia in 1757. In 1776 Teter signed the famous Watauga Petition to North Carolina.

He also actively served in the armed conflict of the revolution. He marched to King's Mountain in 1780 with the “Overmountain Men” and fought in Captain Shelby's Company. Teter died in 1805 and was buried in the Nave cemetery in Siam, Carter County, Tennessee.

His incredible life and many descendants have been documented in a 400-page scholarly genealogical study.

Compatriots Geoff Baggett and Dennis Adams visited the Pennyroyal Veteran’s Center in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, today. This center is a residential 50-bed center where formerly homeless veterans to receive a home, job training, and opportunities for employment. The center is currently running at capacity, regularly progressing veterans through its six-month program.

Compatriots Baggett and Adams delivered several items that they collected through their church, Crossroads Fellowship. Items included four sets of steel-toed work boots, many toiletry items, and a significant cash donation.

While they were visiting, the compatriots honored two veterans who are approaching their final days at the center. They presented Veteran’s Appreciation Certificates and Medals to Greg Dulin, veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and Keith Hatcher, veteran of the United States Navy.

VETERANS HONORED

Compatriot Dennis Adams, during a time of family fellowship on Mother’s Day, honored his brother-in-law Brent Stewart and his father-in-law Charles D. Stewart with the Veteran’s Appreciation Medal and Certificate.

Brent is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and served in Operations Desert Shield & Desert Storm (First Gulf War). Charles is a veteran of the United States Navy. He served from 1956 until 1962 on the battleship USS Iowa and then the cruiser USS Galveston in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Seas.

RECRUIT A RELATIVE!Compatriots! All male relatives in your bloodline are

eligible for SAR membership! This includes your sons, grandsons, brothers, nephews ... even your uncles! If they share your patriot blood, they are eligible!

The most responsive recruits will be the young boys. They have an interest in history, uniforms, and many of the things that we are doing. Capture their attention early! Invite them to join. Pay their fees! The fees for Junior Members are minimal on a Patriot line that is already proven. Recruit a relative in June!

A PATRIOT ANCESTOR IS FOUND!During their recent visit to the Vincennes

Rendezvous and the George Rogers Clark Commemorative Service in Vincennes, chapter President Geoff Baggett and his wife, Kim, made a very special visit. They stopped by the grave of Kim’s 5th Great-Grandfather, Pierre Grimard (pronounced “Greemar”), who died in 1784. Kim’s

maiden name is “Gremore,” an Americanized version of the French name.

Pierre was a French-Canadian who swore allegiance to Virginia and joined the forces of George Rogers Clark in 1779. He is buried in the Old Cathedral Church cemetery in Vincennes.

In addition to volunteering to present the Law Enforcement Medal “solo” to Dave Colbert, he also helped deliver gifts to the Pennyroyal Veterans Center and sponsored (paid for) three other veterans to be recognized. LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMENDATION MEDALPOSTHUMOUS PRESENTATION

RONALD L “RONNIE” MURPHY - LYON COUNTYOn Friday, May 16, Geoff Baggett, Steve Mallory, Tony Ramey, and Gary Thompson presented

a posthumous Law Enforcement Commendation Medal to the family of the late Ronald L. “Ronnie” Murphy, former sheriff of Lyon County. He passed away in May last year. The presentation was was in Eddyville, Kentucky, at the Lyon County Courthouse. It was the first public service medal ever given by the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter.

Mr. Murphy was a 1954 graduate of Butler High School in Princeton where he served as the class president. He loved and lived law enforcement. He retired as a Sergeant for the Kentucky State Police Force after 26 years of service. He was former sheriff of Lyon County for five years and was even serving as a deputy for the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department at the time of his passing. He also served as an honorary Alabama State Trooper, serving as a body guard for Gov. George Wallace in 1968.

Receiving the award were his widow, Clara Orange Murphy, and children, Kevin Murphy (current Lyon County Sheriff), Kent Murphy, and Kim Glass.

LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMENDATION MEDALDAVE COLBERT - SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER

CADIZ POLICE DEPARTMENTOn Friday, May 16, Compatriot Dennis Adams presented the Law Enforcement Commendation

Medal to Trigg County Schools Resource Officer Dave Colbert. The presentation was at Trigg Cunty High School during the annual Awards Day Ceremony in front of hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and family members. It was a surprise presentation.

Officer Colbert started his law enforcement career in 1975. First, in the community of Hammond, Indiana, he served as an officer, and a Detective Sergeant, working to solve violent crimes. He worked in a special Gang Investigations Unit, attended the 194th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and was assigned to the FBI Northwest Indiana Gang Task Force. He also served as SWAT team leader from 1997 until 2007.

He retired from his first career in Law Enforcement in 2007, then began his “second career” in 2008 when he relocated to Cadiz to serve as the School Resource Officer for the Cadiz Police Department. He is known, trusted, loved, and respected by all who encounter him in our schools.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES MEDALTIM WAGONER - PILOT SUPERVISOR / LEAD PILOT

AIR EVAC LIFE TEAMTim Wagoner received his flight training in the United States Army, where he served from

1992-2002 and finished his career as a CW2 Helicopter Pilot. Immediately after leaving the army, he was employed as a Rescue Pilot by the Air Evac Life Team. He now serves as a Pilot Supervisor and Lead Pilot at the Mayfield Air Evac base.

Mr. Wagoner received a special commendation from Air Evac for his actions on 17 August 2012. On that day, while he was on flight duty, he received word that his son and daughter were involved in an ATV accident and required transport. His chopper, as well as a second chopper and crew, were dispatched to his own farm to fly both of his children to regional hospitals. He managed to fly his own son, Wyatt, to a hospital in Paducah, Kentucky, with a severe laceration of the thigh that endangered his femoral artery. Mr. Wagoner was able to maintain his professionalism and accomplish a life-saving flight for his own son, while the second aircrew successfully evacuated his daughter to Vanderbilt Medical Center with a traumatic head injury. Once his son was stabilized, Mr. Wagoner drove to Nashville to be with his wife and daughter. Both his son and daughter recovered completely and are in excellent health today.

Since beginning his career with Air Evac, Pilot Tim Wagoner, has completed well over 1,000 life-saving flights.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES MEDALFRANK BOONE - EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

TRIGG COUNTY AMBULANCE SERVICEOn Tuesday, May 20, compatriots from the Col. Stephen

Trigg Chapter presented the Emergency Medical Services Medal to EMT Frank Boone in a surprise presentation during Emergency Medical Services Week. The presentation took place at the Trigg County Ambulance Service building. Local radio and newspaper covered the event.

In November 1977 Frank was hired as the second employee, ever, of the Trigg County Ambulance Service. He has served our community for thirty-six years as an Emergency Medical Technician, and has been a pillar of the Ambulance Service. He is something of a permanent fixture in our community. Every patient he has served can testify that Frank Boone has gone above and beyond his duty to care for the people of Trigg County.

The chapter also awarded Frank a Veteran’s Appreciation Certificate and Medal for his service in the United States Army in Vietnam.

LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMENDATION MEDALRANDLE G. CRUSE

KENTUCKY STATE POLICE (RETIRED)

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter presented the Law Enforcement Commendation to Randle G. Cruse on the evening of Tuesday, May 20. His family was present for the award.

Randle Cruse entered the service of the Kentucky State Police in July 1971, serving in Kenton County, Mayfield, and Trigg County. He primarily served in Trigg County until his retirement in 1994, retiring at the rank of Senior Trooper. He also served as his post Hostage Negotiator and in Accident Reconstruction. After his retirement, he became a licensed Land Surveyor. He continues to operate his own business and serve the community in the elected office of Trigg County Surveyor.

The chapter also awarded him a Veteran’s Appreciation Certificate and Medal for his service in the United States Army from 1969 until 1971.
