The Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost October 17, 2021

The Christian finds rest in Jesus. From the beginning of time, God provided rest

for his creation. He blessed the seventh day and set it

apart, that man might learn to find his rest in God

alone. In Jesus, the Christian finds rest from so much. We find rest from our burdens of sin and guilt; we find rest from our battles against temp-

tation and evil; we find rest with our Creator and Savior forever in heaven.

M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts.

Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful,

and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions.

I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment

both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins,

and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins

in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. H O L Y B A P T I S M

During this morning’s 10:30am service, Cannon Robert Schaller, the newborn son of Jeff and Amber Schaller, will be baptized into the family of God.

God of all power and might, you are the giver of all that is good. Help us love you with all our heart, strengthen us in true faith, provide us with all we need, and keep us safe in your care; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Joshua 23:1-11

1 After a long time had passed and the LORD had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them, Josh-ua, by then old and well advanced in years, 2 summoned all Israel– their elders, leaders, judges and offi-cials– and said to them: “I am old and well advanced in years. 3 You yourselves have seen everything the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake; it was the LORD your God who fought for you. 4 Remember how I have allotted as an inheritance for your tribes all the land of the nations that re-main– the nations I conquered– between the Jordan and the Great Sea in the west. 5 The LORD your God himself will drive them out of your way. He will push them out before you, and you will take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you. 6 “Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left. 7 Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them. 8 But you are to hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have until now. 9 “The LORD has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you. 10 One of you routs a thousand, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as he prom-ised. 11 So be very careful to love the LORD your God. (NIV84)

Hebrews 4:1-11 1 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2 For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith. 3 Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”

And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world. 4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “And on the seventh day God rested from all his work.” 5 And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”

6 It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience. 7 Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before:

Page 5: The Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost - 10.17.2021

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Denver—5

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”

8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his.

11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience. (NIV84)

St. Matthew 11:25-30

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son ex-cept the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (NIV84)

Come unto Me, Ye Weary (Christian Worship 336, stanzas 1,2)

1 “Come unto me, ye weary, 2 “Come unto me, ye wand’rers, And I will give you rest.” And I will give you light.” O blessed voice of Jesus, O loving voice of Jesus, Which comes to hearts oppressed! Which comes to cheer our night! It tells of benediction, Our hearts were filled with sadness, Of pardon, grace, and peace, And we had lost our way; Of joy that has no ending, But thou hast brought us gladness Of love that cannot cease. And songs at break of day.

Come unto Me, Ye Weary (Christian Worship 336, stanzas 3,4)

3 “Come unto me, ye fainting, 4 “And whosoever cometh, And I will give you life.” I will not cast him out.” O cheering voice of Jesus, O patient love of Jesus, Which comes to aid our strife! Which drives away our doubt, The foe is stern and eager; Which, though we be unworthy The fight is fierce and long; Of love so great and free, But thou hast made us mighty Invites us very sinners And stronger than the strong. To come, dear Lord, to thee!

O F F E R I N G

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for

God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all (mes, having all

that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

M: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

M: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them up to the Lord.

M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

C: It is good and right so to do.

M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual bless-ing.

He sends the Holy Spirit to testify that we are his children and to strengthen us when we are weak.

Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

C: Holy, holy, holy Lord God of heavenly hosts: Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remem-brance of me.”

M: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen. O C H R I S T , L A M B O F G O D

C: O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us and grant us your peace. Amen.

God's Word teaches us that Holy Communion is not only a communion of the bread and wine with the body and blood of Christ, but also a declaration that those who commune together are one in a common confession of faith (1 Corinthians 10, 11).

On the basis of God’s Word, we practice closed Communion, admitting to the Lord's Table only those who have been instructed in the basic teachings of the Scriptures and have publicly indicated their agreement with us by their com-municant membership in the congregation. Visitors who desire to receive the Sacrament of the Altar are asked to speak with the pastor before the service.

Scripture teaches us that those who plan to receive the Sacrament ought to examine themselves before doing so, lest they eat and drink judgment on themselves. For a fitting way to prepare to receive the Sacrament, you may turn to pg. 156 in the front part of the hymnal and use the suggested questions for “Personal Preparation for Holy Communion”.
