THE SERMON The Rev. Margery Kennelly

Please stand, as you are able, for the Creed.

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucifi ed under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorifi ed.

4

He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Please kneel, as you are able, for the Prayers of the People.

CONFESSION OF SIN BCP, p. 330

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen.

THE ABSOLUTION BCP, p. 332

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confi rm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer II BCP, p. 340

The Lord be with you.And with thy spirit.Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord.Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.It is meet and right so to do.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God.

The celebrant says a Proper Preface.

Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

The people sing Holy, holy, holy (Hymnal S114) Willan

Please kneel or remain standing, as you are able.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine ownimage; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifi ce for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifi ce, until his coming again.

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all ofyou; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless andsanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son JesusChrist.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifi ce of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be fi lled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord;

By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

MUSIC DURING COMMUNION

And I saw a new heaven Edgar L. Bainton

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth:For the fi rst heaven and the fi rst earth were passed away; And there was no more sea.And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem,Coming down from God out of heaven,Prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying,Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men,And he will dwell with them and they shall be his people,And God himself shall be with them and be their God.

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; And there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying,Neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away.

Please kneel, as you are able, for the prayer.

THE POSTCOMMUNION PRAYER BCP, p. 339

Let us pray.

Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

MUSIC NOTE Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) is one of the most prolifi c composers from England. Well-known for works such as Enigma Variations, Cello Concerto, and Pomp and Circumstance, he brings a beautiful lyricism into today’s offertory. The choir sings the same musical patterns on two verses of this text, and it has a wonderfully combined solemnity and tunefulness. “And I saw a new heaven” by Edgar Bainton (1886-1956) is one of the most beloved anthems in our Anglican sacred works. Bainton is a British-born Australian composer whose fame is closely tied to this very anthem. The stunning text from Revelation is married to an equally imaginative musical language that projects majesty, wonderment, beauty, sorrow, and comfort.

READINGS

OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 65:17–25

I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I am creating; for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a delight. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people; no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old person who does not live out a lifetime; for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain, or bear children for calamity; for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord—and their descendants as well. Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox; but the serpent—its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the Lord.

NEW TESTAMENT READING 2 Thessalonians 3:6–13

Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, and we did not eat anyone’s bread without paying for it; but with toil and labor we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you. This was not because we do not have that right, but in order to give you an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 21:5–19

When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, Jesus said, “As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down.” They asked him, “Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?” And he said, “Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is near!’ Do not go after them. When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrifi ed; for these things must take place fi rst, but the end will not follow immediately.” Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven. But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls.”

Nurturing Our Parish CommunityBy Jen and Andy Davis

St. George’s has nurtured all our fellowship needs. We have made more friendships the longer we have been at church, and by plugging into discipleship groups; it has deepened our faith too. We look at annual giving and the recent capital campaign as ways to nurture and foster our community that we depend on for opportunities to develop and deepen our children’s faith and our own.

STEWARDSHIP 2020

We thank all of you who already have made a pledge for 2020. We are pleased to report that our participation rate for annual stewardship has increased by nearly 6 percentage points from 2018 to 2019. Especially as we approach Thanksgiving, we ask you to think about all the blessings in your life and how you will respond. You can pledge via Realm, online, or by dropping a pledge card in the offering plate today. Thank you.

We will gather rain or shine and walk for about 45 minutes on paved roads so if you have a stroller that works too.
