UNA awards ^48,700 in 1984-85 scholarships JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Ukrai

nian National Association has awarded a record S48.700 in scholarships for the 1984-85 academic year to 162 Ukrainian students throughout the United States and Canada.

The top winners were Maria Dolnycky, who won the S 1.000 Bohdan Zorych Memorial Scholarship, Christine Miz, who was awarded the SI.000 Wolka Memorial Scholarship, and Paul Nachim. who won the SI,000 Roman Slobodian Memorial Scholarship.

Last year, the UNA awarded 550,700 of scholarships to 178 students.

The awards are approved each year by the UNA Supreme Executive Committee on the recommendations of the UNA Scholarship Committee.

The committee uses eriteria such as financial need, academic achievement and involvement in Ukrainian community life in choosing scholarship recipients. To be eligible for the awards, students must be members (at the time of application) of the UNA for at least two years.

Total of 5388,000

The UNA has contributed close to S388,0OO of scholarships since the institution of its formal scholarship program in 1964.

The amount represents approximately 1.486 scholarships awarded to hundreds of students - many of them two-, three-, or even four-time recipients - and includes the regular scholarships annually awarded to youths majoring in various subjects, special scholarships for students majoring in journalism and, most recently, stipends given to graduating students of Ukrainian high schools in the United States and students of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg and the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

Aid to needy students

The UNA'has aided needy students almost since the fraternal organization's founding. The first scholarships were actually grants as small as S20 to S50 given to students who appealed to the UNA for monetary aid. No formal application procedure was yet esta

blished. One of the earliest UNA scholarship

recipients was the young Alexander Granovsky, who later became a world-renowned entomologist and a pioneer of insect-control methods. (Dr. Granovsky died in 1976 at the age of 89.)

The formally instituted UNA scholarship program had its beginning in 1962, when the 25th UNA Convention recommended that a scholarship fund be established to aid Ukrainian students, particularly those pursuing studies in Ukrainian-related subjects, political science, history or journalism.

Acting on this recommendation, the

UNA Supreme Assembly at its annual meeting in 1964 created the UNA Scholarship Committee and allocated S2.000 for the first annual scholarship awards for academic vear 1964-65.

The amount awarded yearly grew from the originally proposed S2.000 to over S5,000 for the 1971-72 academic year. The number of students receiving aid each year during this period varied between four and eight.

Then, in 1972, the UNA doubled the amount alloted for scholarships and awarded funds to 40 students — more than ever before.

This special annual issue is dedicated to this year's winners of Ukrainian National Association student scholarships. It consists of brief profiles of the deserving young men and women who are pursuing their higher education and career goals with the assistance of the UNA.

The profiles were prepared by The Weekly's editors as a special service to the winnersand their families. This

year marks the 20th anniversary of the formal creation of the UNA Scholarship Committee, which gave out a total of 12,000 for the academic year 1964-65. This year, nearly 24 times as much money was awarded.

This special issue, then, is our salute to the work of the committee and to the fine students who are the beneficiaries of its efforts.

UNA SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

The Ukrainian National Association has been awarding scholarships to students since before the First World War. Many of the recipients occupy positions of importance in the professional ranks and in the community.

The UNA Scholarship Committee was established as a result of a recommendation of the 25th UNA Convention held in 1962 and a decision of the Supreme Assembly in May 1964. In its first decade of existence, the UNA Scholarship Committee awarded 135 scholarships to eligible candidates, but for the two years of 1974 and 1975, has exceeded that total, by awarding 161 scholarships. To date, a total of 296 scholarships have been awarded.

According to the recommendation of the 25th Convention, the scholarships were designed to give financial aid to Ukrainian students, particularly those pursuing studies in Ukrainian related subjects, in political science and journalism. In time, seperate journalism scholarships were established and awarded to students on the recommendation of the Svo-boda editorial staff.

The Scholarship Committee is appointed by the Supreme Executive Committee. It implements this program under UNA'S jubilee motto "With Eyes Toward Youth".
