Dear Parents

Week 2 was an extremely busy week which prevented our weekly newsletter being published. We hope you enjoy reading about what a great week it was.

On Monday 4 February we welcomed Kindergarten to school. From the commencement of school last week Kindergarten has been visiting the school for their BestStart Interviews. This is a national strategy where every kindergarten student is assessed on the skills in numeracy and literacy they bring to school. This is benchmark data that is collected and built upon with NAPLAN. Also in Term 4 2018 our 2019 Kindergarten had participated in three sessions of Play and Stay. So by the time they arrived on Monday morning they were well prepared for school and jumping with excitement at the thought of finally starting big school. It was a very confident start and by the end of the day they were all moving around the school as if they had been here for at least three years. Parents have obviously put in a lot of hard work over the holidays as their school skills were evident. We are all very impressed and appreciative of their preparation for school. Thank you parents.

After the little ones had been deposited into the capable hands of Karla Apsden and her team, the parents then proceeded to the kitchen for a Tea and Tissues Morning Tea. There were quite a few tears to mop up but they quickly disappeared as people met each other. There was a lovely atmosphere to the morning with people going out of their way to make friends. We also appreciated the very positive feedback from parents. At the morning tea parents were able to meet P&C President- Nadia Kaye and vice President Chloe Moras. Anita hall, the Grants coordinator on the P&C spoke to our new parents about all things P&C and answered questions. A big thank you to Anita who put in a great deal of effort to provide our new parents with great information. Both Nadia and I welcomed parents and answered questions. We hope that we were able to reduce a lot of the anxiety parents were feeling. There was much enthusiasm for school and P&C projects and we are looking forward to working with such a great bunch of new Vaucluse PS fans. We are looking forward to welcoming all our new parents at the Country Carnival on Friday 29 March 2019. Watch this space for more information.

On Tuesday 5 February our students went into their 2019 classes after recess. This very important school process went calmly and smoothly. Our students were very happy to be in their new classrooms, with their new friends and their new teacher. Our school timetable also commenced last week and we are pleased that each day our school year gains more momentum. We are moving at a steady pace at the moment. Next week Homework will commence and we will begin to hit full speed.

Last week I had several phone calls from very upset neighbours in Cambridge Ave and Village High Road. Our parents had parked across driveways and refused to move when asked. They had parked in specifically designated spaces for drivers with disabilities even when the driver was visible. They had parked illegally on the corner of Cambridge Ave near the entrance to the school. They had dropped students in the driveway of the staff carpark. They had spoken rudely and aggressively to our neighbours. All in the space of one week !! There is an abundance of parking in the streets around our school. It is great for students to park and walk and get some exercise. Even parking up the hill in Cambridge Avenue and walking down the hill is a great solution. We would ask all members of our school community to consider our neighbours and treat them with respect. We would especially ask that parents model appropriate behaviour in front of children.

A reminder that there are many students in our school who are quite frightened of dogs and that we do not allow them to be in the school (even on a lead, even in someone’s arms). I am aware that there have been quite a few dogs in the playground. Please consider our little ones and be mindful that not everyone loves dogs.

In the body of the newsletter there is a copy of the Visiting Therapists Policy. Please read it carefully if you are considering employing a therapist to visit school. This year we have very limited space and will only be able to accommodate a small number of therapists. Once all our space is occupied we are unable to support visiting therapists.

As I said last week, our year has started gently and kindly. Our students are calm, feel safe and are very happy to be back at school. Our new batch of little ones in Kindergarten have started with so much enthusiasm. We have a great deal to be thankful for. We would ask that all our school community respects all of those we share this lovely part of the world with.

Rose Bay Secondary College was undoubtedly the perfect high school for me as both a student and an individual. The teachers supported me with my academic endeavours, whilst the diverse school community sparked an interest in pursuing leadership roles that I would have otherwise been unaware. The opportunities at this College are endless; granting students a broad education that transcends and enriches the curriculum. I believe that the atmosphere of achievement and participation fostered by the teachers and staff of this school will no doubt continue to give students a lifelong love of learning and engagement in their world that is absolutely priceless.

Rose Bay provided me a place where I was able to push myself and strive towards achieving my academic, sporting and social abilities. Since my first day, I have felt welcomed and accepted into a community of hard working students supported with talented, dedicated teachers - an experience that will be valuable for my journey into university and my career. Rose Bay offers support that is second to none and without a doubt, has contributed to my success. I will cherish my time here and remember it for years to come.

The International Year of Indigenous Languages is a United Nations observance in 2019 that aims to

raise awareness of the consequences of the endangerment of Indigenous languages across the

world, with an aim to establish a link between language, development, peace, and reconciliation.

The Aboriginal language of the Sydney district was spoken by Aboriginal people who lived in a wide

area radiating out from the southern shore of Broken Bay to the Hawkesbury River and down to

Botany Bay. Between 1788 and the early nineteenth century, the speakers of the Sydney Language

were dispossessed of their country by colonists from England. The language declined with the

Aboriginal population of Sydney. There are no longer any people who use the language in full. The

only sources of information about the language are historical records.

However, the language still exists in a shadowy form as part of the vocabulary of Australian English.

A number of words in modern Australian English were borrowed into early Australian English from

the Sydney Language within the first few years of English settlement.

2019 marks the 11th Anniversary of the National Apology for the members of the Stolen Generations. It is an important date to acknowledge, because the effects of past policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander families and communities has been profound and continues today.

NEW YEAR = NEW ADVENTURE!

On Monday our Year 6 students helped their old Buddies prepare for their new class in Year

1. Year 6 students prepared social stories to teach their Buddies all about all the new changes

to expect, the different emotions they might feel and great strategies to help them deal with

them. Some students made hands-on pop out books while others used the Chromebooks to

make engaging digital stories.

Everyone loved sharing their stories and tips and helping each other get ready for the exciting

new learning journey ahead.

Happy 2019 everyone!

POLICY FOR VISITING THERAPISTS AND PROFESSIONALS

Dear Parents

In 2019 Vaucluse Public School will schedule a timetable for visiting private therapists such as Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists. In addition to this timetable, Vaucluse Public School have developed a policy for visiting therapists to read and sign prior to commencing therapy.

Intervention by visiting therapists needs to be discussed with and approved by the Learning and Support Team and the school Principal prior to commencing therapy with individual students at Vaucluse Public School. This includes therapists who may have already been privately operating within Vaucluse Public School this year or in years past.

As part of the procedure for arranging therapy at school in 2019 parents will need to write a letter to the Classroom Teacher and school Principal that includes the name of the therapist, the nature of the proposed therapy and the times requested. Permission will not be granted for students to leave the school grounds during school hours to attend outside therapy sessions. If you wish for your child to participate in out of school therapy during school hours, you must apply for Partial Enrolment through initially the Principal of Vaucluse PS, then Bondi Office and the School Education Director of the Port Jackson region.

From January 2019, all visiting therapists are required to:

1) Present their working with children check prior to commencing any therapy sessions

2) Sign in and out at the office before and after each therapy session

3) Ensure they wear a visitors badge whilst at the school

4) Wait in the office for the office staff to notify the students’ classroom teacher of their presence at the school

5) Collect children directly from the classroom teacher and proceed to the designated room as allocated on the school timetable

6) After the therapy session has been completed, the therapist must hand over the student directly to their classroom teacher. Students are NOT permitted to take themselves to and from therapy sessions alone, or in the company of another student without the visiting therapist

7) Comply with all Workplace Health and Safety procedures including Emergency Evacuations, Lockdowns and Lockouts.

Page 13: The Vaucluse Weekly Term 1 Week 3...The Vaucluse Weekly Term 1 Week 3 Address: Cambridge Avenue Vaucluse NSW 2030 Tel. (02) 9337 2672 Fax. (02) 9337 2163 Email address: vaucluse-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

POLICY FOR VISITING THERAPISTS AND PROFESSIONALS As a visiting therapist, I understand that I require approval from the school principal prior to commencing therapy with individual students at Vaucluse Public School. Prior to commencing any therapy sessions, I agree to do the following:

1) Communicate with the school principal and the classroom teacher of the student/s I will be working with prior to commencing any therapy sessions

2) Sign in at the office before each therapy session

3) Present my working with children check upon arrival at the school office and prior to commencing any therapy sessions

4) Wait in the office for the office staff to notify the students’ classroom teacher of their presence at the school

5) Collect the student/s that I am seeing directly from their classroom teacher and proceed to the designated room as allocated on the school timetable

6) Hand over the student directly to their classroom teacher when the therapy session has concluded. I understand that for safety reasons students are NOT permitted to take themselves to and from therapy sessions alone, or in the company of another student without me to accompany them

7) Comply with all Workplace Health and Safety procedures including Emergency Evacuations, Lockdowns and Lockouts.

I have read and understood the above information and agree to comply with all of the above.
