Noon Devotional study
Handbell choir workshop
On Wednesday, February 14, we will celebrate Ash
Wednesday and begin the holy season of Lent. Lent is the
forty-day period before Easter and is a time of soul-
searching and repentance. The spiritual journey of Lent
leads us to the cross on Good Friday and the joy of Easter
morning. For those who wish to begin the day with Imposition of
Ashes, Brother Charles will hold a short service at 7:15am
in the Chapel. That night, we will begin with a Pancake Supper in the
Fellowship Hall at 5:30pm. This is a wonderful opportunity
to fellowship with others from our church and to receive a
Lenten Devotional written by members of our church
family. After supper, the Ash Wednesday service will follow at
6:30pm in the Sanctuary. Brother Cory will lead this service
of worship and Imposition of Ashes. Moving anthems of
the Lenten Season will be sung by Jubilate Singers. Mark your calendars and bring the family to these
opportunities of community and worship as we prepare our
hearts for the pilgrimage to the Lord’s Passion.
Ash Wednesday
Service and
Pancake Supper Dear Friends,
I pray that all is well with you and your family!
This Sunday is a significant day in the Christian year. It is called “Transfiguration
Sunday.” Each year Transfiguration Sunday celebrates the glory of Christ before
Ash Wednesday and the passion of the season of Lent. When we read the Gospels,
Mark 9:1–8, Matthew 17:1–8, and Luke 9:28–36, we find that the Transfiguration of
Jesus serves as a type of bridge between the public ministry of Jesus and his journey
to the cross.
A prayer that is sometimes prayed in churches on Transfiguration Sunday is this
one:
O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his
glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith
the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross,
and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer, p. 217)
I love the part of the prayer where congregants are encouraged to pray together that
we, “may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from
glory to glory.” What a prayerful and powerful invitation!
As we prepare our hearts for worship this Sunday and as we meditate on the
meaning of Christ’s glory, I wonder what it would mean for us to discover strength
in our journey with Christ? What would it mean for you to embrace the cross of
Christ that is before you? What needs to happen in order for the Holy Spirit to
transform you more and more into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ?
I look forward to seeing you this Sunday as we prepare our hearts for a journey to
the cross.
See you Sunday,
Cory

My Jerusalem – March 3rd What Is My Jerusalem?
Like the story of Jerusalem in the Old Testament book of Nehemiah, The
Way 2 Serve seeks to rebuild the broken walls of homes in Opelika and
Auburn and restore the hearts of the people who live in them. It takes all of
us together - you are needed in the community.
Let's Rebuild!
Hundreds of Christians of all ages will gather together on this day to share
God's love with broken people right here in Opelika and Auburn. Individuals
and small groups are needed. This is a great way for Sunday School classes
to serve together BEYOND the walls of AUMC. Contact Keith at
[email protected] or 334-319-6024.
