THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M.

September 2, 2018

Children’s tales and fables are the best. They contain truths, not facts but truths. The fact is there was no fast moving hare and slow lumbering tortoise. The truth is the steady runner wins the race. The “Emperor’s New Clothes” and “The Little Prince” are two examples, more examples of an endless line. Sometimes truth is an aphorism, a short saying such as “there’s an elephant in the room!” There is no huge literal elephant in the room, but something BIG is in the room. We all know its presence, nobody’s talking about it. Play the Mafia game, we don’t want no trouble, you see! It’s the same as any Las Vegas casino, truth wins, always.

Once more you and I are experiencing sad and troubling news. Recent revelations about sin and abuse in this country, it is a sad and confusing time for all of us. We pray intensely for the victim-survivors of these crimes. We continue to pray for families and for our young people. And we pray for our pope,

bishops, priests, deacons, religious men and women, and all seminarians and people in formation for religious life.

Last week we celebrated the feast days of St. Monica and St. Augustine of Hippo, a mother and her son. St. Monica knew the truth throughout her life. Her son, St. Augustine was converted as an adult with the help of his mother’s prayers.

St. Augustine found that a profound relationship with Jesus would set him free from his restless, sinful ways. He was restless until he rested in the peace that Jesus brought. St. Augustine recognized that to be holy he must turn toward Jesus and his Way. To be holy is to be attentive to the voice of God and His direction. Augustine prayed: “Lord, break through my deafness to your word.” Make that our daily prayer!

Last week, the daily readings of the Lectionary led us through St. Paul’s Second Letter to the Thessalonians and the 23rd chapter of St. Matthew’s Gospel. St. Paul’s letter teaches: “May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.” I am encouraged by that short prayer. Can you include it into your spiritual life?

St. Matthew’s Gospel readings continue the alarming “woe to you” sayings. These are admonitions directed to religious leaders who failed to know and do the truth. The rebuke is, as rebukes always are, harsh. No matter how much the truth makes a person squirm, the truth is not fake. Truth’s purpose is to inform, convert, challenge, and change us. It can cause us to do penance, and to set us on the right road.

It takes the community. The whole Church is the community that gathers for the Love of God, the Word of the Lord, and the Sacrament of the Presence of Jesus. The community called Church gathers for Jesus and no-one else. Our faith and our hope is in no-one other than the Revealed Son of the Living God.

Jesus wants to help us to be holy. The truth is that we need to respond to the crisis in the church with a renewed sense of holiness; a lively spirituality that unites us in a deeper relationship with the Lord.

This renewal is first of all a duty of those who lead. As always, leaders must be models of conversion and holiness. Pray that Church leaders love (serve) Jesus.

The Holy Spirit will raise up saints from every walk of life to renew and rebuild his Church. That is clear. It will take time. Conversion is always an ongoing process and it is the journey of our entire life.

We must commit ourselves again to the basic practices of our Christian life: the community, Holy Eucharist, personal prayer, and on-going spiritual faith formation. St. Juliana is a perfect model: community, worship especially the Holy Eucharist, and faith formation.

Once more pause and let Jesus take the lead. Pray the Mass – besides the Sunday obligation, Mass is offered each week day at 6:30AM and 8:00AM and on Saturday mornings at 8:00AM. Come, spend time with the Blessed Sacrament Exposed on our altar every first Tuesday for twenty-four hours. Come, pray – experience God’s love. Leave to glorify the Lord by the way you live your life.

It is Jesus who renews the Church. Renew your people, Oh Lord. Together let us pray that the Lord will give us courage and wisdom to know and to do right acts.

LABOR DAY MASS INFO There will be only one Mass on Labor Day - at 8am. There will be no 6:30am Mass. School and Parish Offices are closed.

On this weekend, when we rest from our usual labors, loving Father, we pray for all who shoulder the tasks of human

labor—in the marketplace, in factories and offices, in the professions, and in family living.

We thank you, Lord, for the gift and opportunity of work;

may our efforts always be pure of heart, for the good of others and the glory of your name.

We lift up to you all who long for just employment and those who

work to defend the rights and needs of workers everywhere.

May those of us who are now retired always remember that we still make a valuable contribution to our Church

and our world by our prayers and deeds of charity.

May our working and our resting give praise to you until the day we share together in eternal rest with all our departed in your

Kingdom as you live and reign Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God,

forever and ever. Amen. ~Archdiocese of Detroit

PENNIES FROM HEAVEN The parish Respect Life Group wants to thank all of the people who contributed so generously to the annual PENNIES FROM HEAVEN collection last weekend. There were a lot of people who forgot to return their bottles or other donations. There is a pink basket in the vestibule to put your donation in this weekend and next. If you didn't get a baby bottle, just put your donation in a zip-lock baggie. We accept paper money, and checks too besides the coins. There are still 200 bottles that need to be returned.

Please return the donation and bottles by Sept. 9th so we can have a report in the bulletin on Sept. 16th on the amount of the collection.

Online Giving Through Faith Direct EASILY AVAILABLE FOR PARISHIONERS TO REGISTER!

What is online giving? Have you noticed, not everyone puts an envelope in the offertory basket every week? St. Juliana successfully began online giving several years ago—Many of us do not even carry cash or a checkbook … Online giving to the Church is very similar to what many of us already do - we go “on line” to transfer money from one account to another — online giving is made easily available through Faith Direct for your family to share your financial gifts with the Church. It is simple - When you give electronically online, you don’t have to remember to bring an envelope to church…you come to church to worship; not to worry about whether or not you have an envelope or if you have cash to put in the offertory basket. You can worship freely, knowing your offertory gift is already taken care of. It is secure - Convenient, safe, reliable, paperless, electronic transactions from one bank to another bank have shown to be safer than cash donations or checks. Donations are easy to track and tax reporting records are especially accurate.

Thank you for your assistance and for joining Faith Direct for your offertory giving!

Simply visit www.faithdirect.net

(St. Juliana’s Church Code is CA850) and opt to have your donations for offertory and special collections

debited from your bank or credit card on the 4th or 15th of the month.

For assistance with this, please contact

St. Juliana Business Manager, Esteban Jimenez at 714-853-1192.

Thank you for your ongoing generosity to the parish community of St. Juliana.

PRIESTHOOD DISCERNMENT

During the 9am Mass all children grades 1-5 are invited to participate in the “Children’s Liturgy of the Word”. During this this time a catechist guides the children through the Sunday readings at an age appropriate level. All children are welcome each week to join us; there is no registration fee.

In order to have a 9am Mass Children’s Liturgy we need dedicated adults / parents to lead this ministry. This is not difficult (instructional material is provided) and is actually a very special time with the children of our parish. Are you feeling called to this ministry? The commitment is to lead or assist one Sunday every 5-6 weeks. Call Mike McHenry at the parish office, 714-853-1193.

Third World Gifts & Handarts/ Homeboy & Homegirl Products

...at St. Juliana Sept 8th and 9th.

Third World Gifts & Handarts will be having a sale of fair trade crafts from Native American lands and developing nations, plus products from Homeboy/Homegirl Industries, Fr. Greg Boyle’s mission in Los Angeles. It will be held adjacent to our sanctuary following all masses on September 8 and 9. Their nonprofit, all-volunteer organization was founded at a parish in Anaheim in 1975. Also, you may bring these donations for their ongoing collection for Catholic missions serving low-income Hopi and Navajo people in northern Arizona, and for Father Joe’s Villages for the Homeless at St. Vincent de Paul Center in San Diego, aiding families and the nation’s second largest population of homeless veterans: new school supplies, backpacks, housewares, small furniture, hygiene products, baby items and nutritious foods, plus freshly laundered blankets and clothing (shoes in separate bags, please). For more information, please call their shop at 714/464-0556. Thank you!
