THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M.

May 20, 2018

How do you picture love? Sigh! That’s it! That’s the answer! A sigh. The breath of life one person gives to another after a deeply important work; THE work of love, creating life. Sigh! Breath. Wind. Energy.

How do you picture love? Gifts! The gift of life. The gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost. Something like wind. Certainly love. Gifts given for the service of a community, not the individual, the ego, not the self. Speaking the language of God; love, compassion, and healing. Believing: “Jesus is Lord.” Many parts coming together to manifest the love of God for His community.

Be Christians boldly. A Christian engaged in the actions of faith, love, and service.

How is one person to do this? How does a community do it? Begin with prayer. Pause and pray, often in the day, “Come Holy Spirit fill me with your love. Fill me with your life.” And he will! Pinocchio was told to give a little whistle. Catholic Christians should pause and give a little prayer.

Remember the virtues of the “Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life.” The gifts of His life are the three theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity. They enable us to believe the truths God has revealed, trust that God is all powerful and faithful, and direct us to love God above all things.

The Holy Spirit gives us the seven gifts of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety, and awe and wonder – what we used to call fear of the Lord. (Remember when we used to call the Holy Spirit, the Holy Ghost?)

Perhaps you know the fruits of the Holy Spirit: charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity (gentle kindness), goodness, long-suffering, mildness, faith, modesty, self-control, and chastity.

The love of God are the gifts He gives us, His Church on Earth, which is the Body of Christ. These gifts are obvious. They are given to extend God’s love, the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit, to the community.

I encourage you to read and pray Romans chapter twelve and I Corinthians chapter twelve.

Come Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of your faithful at St. Juliana.

What gifts do you have that will benefit the whole community? You are gifted and you are called to be of service.

Altar servers, choir members, ushers (ministers of hospitality), Eucharistic Ministers, lectors, finance council, pastoral council, stewardship (advancement committee), grammar school councils, bereavement ministry, Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent De Paul, teachers, and all ministers, we thank you for your gifts. For those who can serve but don’t, I encourage you to become an active minister. Altar servers especially, I encourage you to continue after grammar school graduation.

To discover what gifts you have but don’t yet know about, consult the website: discernment of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

We need to be Catholics boldly. If you aren’t practicing your faith boldly in the community of St. Juliana, does Catholic Christianity stand a chance off of the parking lot? Jesus said: “Shout from housetops” – “Go to the whole world and proclaim the Good News” – if it stops in the church pew, not even getting out of the parking lot, the Good News doesn’t stand a chance of spreading. Psst: The “spread the Good News” as “Missionary Disciples” ministry of FOCUS is what make FOCUS so attractive to me. How about you? (FOCUS – Fellowship Of Catholic University Students).

Speaking of the parking lot. Please be careful driving and walking in it. While driving please observe these directions, enter through the east (close to the park) and exit through the west (close to the church).

Pentecost is the birth of the Church. May it be a birth and re-birth for each member of Christ’s Body.

“MAY WE BE OF SERVICE” MONTH LONG PARISH ACTS OF SERVICE

St. Juliana Falconieri congratulates the Knight of the Year,

Mr. Nick Enke, Grand Knight., Council 4018 Your years of service and leadership with the

Knights and our community is greatly appreciated. You are a true steward. Thank you for all you do!

The Catechism of the Catholic Church sees Pentecost as the principle Scriptural foundation for the sacrament of Confirmation:

“On several occasions Christ promised this outpouring of the Spirit, a promise which he fulfilled first on Easter Sunday [by breathing upon the Apostles] and then more strikingly at Pentecost.” (CCC 1287)

The connection between Confirmation and Pentecost is so strong, that the Roman Catechism of the Council of Trent desired that the sacrament “be administered principally at Pentecost”, explaining that “on that day especially were the Apostles strengthened and confirmed by the power of the Holy Ghost.”

St. Thomas Aquinas summarizes this tradition well: “In this sacrament [Confirmation], the Holy Ghost is given to the baptized for strength: just as he was given to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.” (ST III, q.72, a.7)

Today we welcome our Adult Confirmation Candidates

as they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation

and become fully initiated into the Catholic Church!

Dementia affects not only the person challenged by the disease but everyone involved in their support network - especially their caregivers, who might be a spouse, adult children, grandchildren, neighbors, friends and their health care providers. Caregiving is never easy, but caregiving for someone, whose condition is not

understood, only heightens the frustration and stress of caregiving. Come and learn about the stages of dementia, how the physiological changes in the brain impact behavior and the

importance of empathy in caregiving.

"Someone I know has dementia. How can I Help?" will be held Monday, May 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall at
