THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

Page Three September 3, 2017

Before school began I spoke with the administration, faculty, and staff of our school. I addressed many parents on the first day of school. Here’s a recap if you missed or want to read it.

It’s a pleasure to have you here. Without you, without the school and its activities, the campus is b-o-r-i-n-g. I’m really happy St. Juliana Parish has a school, a great school, and you are part of it. Thanks.

Thank you for trusting St. Juliana School – as a place to teach and as a place for your sons/daughters to learn. Here they will learn to be good citizens of the USA and formed as members of the Kingdom of God. Here they can learn the Constitution of the United States and how to serve Gospel virtues so they will make decisions according to the Gospel and lead a Catholic life. Here the students, because their parents chose it for them, will be formed on a solid foundation to be faith-filled disciples of Jesus. It’s a bit redundant; however that’s why we exist as a Catholic school!

Here our teachers teach as a calling, their vocation. Pray for our teachers. Our teachers aren’t working for a pay-check alone. They are working for the apostolate. They are evangelizers. They complete what is begun in the families of our students; they continue to convert our students to Jesus Christ.

Our school, any Roman Catholic Christian school, is successful when the students imitate Jesus Christ. That is what sets the Catholic/Christian school apart from other schools. The Catholic/Christian school is successful when it makes disciples, when it encourages its faculty, students, and their families to form a life-long and life-giving relationship with Jesus Christ. Students need their parents and the Catholic school faculty to enliven their minds and convert the souls. It’s a bit redundant, but needs to be mentioned. WOW! That’s an awesome task!

Since I became pastor of the parish and its school I have emphasized taking on the charisms, the spiritual gifts, of St. Juliana our patroness. Juliana was devoted to the Eucharist. A woman of community, she founded the Servite Sisters. She was educated in our faith.

The Eucharist is central to our community. Our students attend Mass in three different groups each week. The kindergarteners, first, and second graders attend the 8:00AM Mass on Tuesday. Third, fourth, and fifth grades attend the 8:00AM Mass on Wednesday. On Friday the sixth, seventh, and eighth graders attend Mass. On the First Friday, or another significant day in the month, the entire student body attends the 8:00AM Mass. The students are brought to Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at different times on the First Tuesday of each month. Jesus, truly present in the Holy Eucharist is our identity, our strength, our courage, our medicine for immortality. The students are forming a habit of being present to Jesus; saying prayers and learning about him. Please join the student body on weekdays as you are able. If you are parishioners and not parents or relatives – you are essential to our community – come to Mass with the students. We like having you here. Practice your faith as best you can as a family. When your son/daughter sees you doing what they are doing, their good habits are reinforced. Join us in worship at Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Don’t neglect Sunday Mass. I know there is a lot of competition with other things on a Sunday. There are also a lot of churches. And there is an app for that: Masstimes.org! Please make St. Juliana your community.

Parents, help me and the school. I encourage you to not simply drop off and pick up your child. Help your son/daughter to live the faith that he/she is being taught. Stop in the church for a visit, a prayer, a time to collect yourself in prayer, a time to reconnect with God and form a relationship with Jesus. Do it with your child. Spend a few minutes, even an hour, at Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on the First Tuesday of each month. The church is open; Jesus is present so that he may be visited. Without you, the church is a “deserted place.”

We form a community of Christians on the campus. Together we make virtuous choices based on what is right by the law of Christ and his Church. We accept one another, the families of the grammar school and those who do not attend our grammar school are all St. Juliana Falcons. And those who have no children! There cannot be an “us and them” and a community (many becoming one) at the same time. We are one body – one in being with Jesus Christ. Rooted in the Holy Eucharist, we form a community. Together we are forming the faith of the next generation of Catholics.

The third charism of our saint is faith formation. St. Juliana Falconieri was the niece of St. Alexis Falconieri, one of the Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order who administrate this parish. Alexis was in charge of the students, begged money for the seminary formation of the new members.

To become faith-filled disciples of Jesus, we must be converted to his Gospel. This conversion involves the mind so that the faith will be known; the heart so that the proper attitude of joy, compassion, or sorrow will be felt; and moral conversion so that the parish will behave in a way that models Christian behavior.

Keep this prayer in mind and practice it: “Grant that all the faithful of the Church, looking into the signs of the times by the light of faith, may constantly devote themselves to the service of the Gospel. Keep us attentive to the needs of all that, sharing their grief and pain, their joy and hope, we may faithfully bring them the good news of salvation and go forward with them along the way of your Kingdom.”

Look at the times; show the young students how to make decisions based on the Gospel. Be attentive to the needs of others; teach them how to share grief, pain, hope, and joy.

More important than teaching the answers to today’s concerns is teaching how to make the right choice in situations that haven’t been presented to the students – yet. Here, at St. Juliana’s, the students are taught what is right today so they can make the best choices to answer tomorrow’s unknown questions.

I was asked not long ago: “Father Mike, what is your biggest concern.” My biggest concern is not a what, it’s a who. My biggest concern is The Millennials. My biggest concern is the next generation of Catholic Christians. Right now they are leaving our faith community in large numbers. My concern is how to keep St. Juliana Parish and School growing as disciples of Jesus.

Lastly, I encourage you to down load “The Catholic School” from the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education. It’s a good read.

Once again – Thank you for trusting St. Juliana Catholic Parish and School. God Bless.

A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M.

Online Giving Through Faith Direct NOW AVAILABLE FOR PARISHIONERS TO REGISTER!

go to: www.faithdirect.net Our Church Code is CA850

If you currently give online through Vanco or ParishPay please discontinue this service and begin your online giving through

Faith Direct. Thank you!

What is online giving? Have you noticed, not everyone puts an envelope in the offertory basket every week? Many parishioners donate online to the parish. St. Juliana began online giving several years ago—we are now just changing to a different company that promises us added security, simplicity and accuracy. Many of us do not even carry cash or have a checkbook...Online giving to the Church is very similar to what many of us already do - we go “on line” to transfer money from one account to another — and now, through reflection and prayer, online giving is made easily available through Faith Direct for your family to share your financial gifts with the Church.

It is simple - When you give electronically online, you don’t have to remember to bring an envelope to church…you come to church to worship; not to worry about whether or not you have an envelope or if you have cash to put in the offertory basket. You can worship freely, knowing your offertory gift is already taken care of.

It is secure - Convenient, safe, reliable, paperless, electronic transactions from one bank to another bank have shown to be safer than cash donations or checks. Donations are easy to track and tax reporting records are especially accurate.

Thank you for your assistance and for joining Faith Direct for your offertory giving!

Simply visit www.faithdirect.net (St. Juliana’s Church Code is CA850)

and opt to have your donations for offertory and special collections debited from your bank or credit card on the

4th or 15th of the month.

For assistance with this, please contact St. Juliana Business Manager, Esteban Jimenez at 714-853-1192.

Thank you for your ongoing generosity to the parish community of St. Juliana Falconieri.

LABOR DAY MASS INFO

School and Parish Offices are closed.

On this weekend, when we rest from our usual labors, loving Father, we pray for all who shoulder the tasks of

human labor—in the marketplace, in factories and offices, in the professions, and in family living.

We thank you, Lord, for the gift and opportunity of work; may our efforts always be pure of heart,

for the good of others and the glory of your name.

We lift up to you all who long for just employment and those who work to defend the rights and needs of workers everywhere.

May those of us who are now retired always remember that we still make a valuable contribution to our Church

and our world by our prayers and deeds of charity.

May our working and our resting give praise to you until the day we share together in eternal rest with all our departed in your Kingdom

as you live and reign Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. ~Archdiocese of Detroit

“Always . . . Christ is present in his word” (Lectionary for Mass [LFM], no. 4). In proclaiming the Word of God, Lectors (readers) exercise their responsibility in mediating the presence of Christ. God speaks to the assembly through them. St. Juliana Parish has a team of well trained Lectors - if this is a team you feel called to be part of, we would love for you to join us! We are offering an information / training session:

Tuesday, September 12th - immediately following the 7pm family rosary in the church.

For info, please contact Vern Meurer at 714-870-7524 or email [email protected].

In every celebration of the Eucharist, there should be a sufficient number of ministers of Holy Communion so that it may be distributed in a reverent and orderly manner. If this is a ministry you are feeling called to, please respond to God’s call and join us for an information / training session:

Wednesday, September 13th -7pm in the church

Please contact Deacon Pete Lauder at 714-932-9033 or email [email protected] for more information.
