THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

I was a humanities major at “The Beloved University”. That didn’t get me out of a couple semesters of science classes in the General Education requirement for graduation. So, I took a most insightful and enjoyable science class tailored for humanities majors: “The History of Astronomy.” I recall being taught that one of the ancient astronomers, I can’t recall which one and a Google search didn’t produce any result, proclaimed: “If God would have consulted me at the time of creation I would have given Him good advice.” Most likely the words of the quote are incorrect, but the idea is there.

“If those who wrote the new translation for the Mass would have consulted me, I would have given them good advice.” I say that! I would have given them the advice

to switch up “Amen” and “I believe”. I would have told them to use: “With the help of God” as the response to some prayers. I would have told them that when I receive communion I respond: “May the Body of Christ continue to bring me to eternal life.” “May the Blood of Christ continue to bring me to eternal life.” I say the required response aloud; I also pray a meaningful one, quietly to myself. Pssst: You can do this too if it helps.

We don’t say “I believe” often enough. Both creeds, the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed, contain the word; I believe (credo). The creed is a statement of beliefs. Amen also means “so be it” or “I believe” so why not say “I believe”? Then go out and do the words and deeds of belief. Become what you believe.

“This celebration (of the Mass) has ended (thanks be to God); Let us go in peace, glorifying the Lord by the way we live our lives.” Why not respond: “With the help of God”? I do, because it is meaningful.

Beliefs, words, and actions that follow require “the help of God.” Or they aren’t the work of God! Good people do good works. But, are they holy works, the work of God – Opus Dei? What happens when their salt becomes flat? What response do the good deeds get when they become burdensome? Gripe about doing the virtuous deed and the virtue is lost!

When you receive Holy Communion say: “Amen” aloud. Believe that you are receiving the very Body and Blood of Our Savior. You are taking the Real Presence of Jesus into your body. After doing so pause and give thanks for so great a gift. Allow that saving grace to change your life so that you and the entire church will be “conformed to the image of Jesus.”

With the help of God “look into the signs of the times by the light of faith and devote yourselves to the service of the Gospel.” Be attentive to the needs of those around you and bring them the good news of salvation.

The lessons from Scripture give us wisdom to know the will of God. The Heavenly Food from the altar table gives us prudence and courage to become the Faithful People of God.

With the help of God go out and become what you believe. The help that only God can give is what is required to live God’s law of love. For love is service.

One of the most difficult lessons is to teach and learn that love is not a feeling. Love is an act of the will. Love takes over when the feelings fail, when for a time the beloved hasn’t even been too likable.

I believe that with the help of God we are conformed into the likeness of Jesus and we do his will.

A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK

SHARING OUR TREASURES

Thank you to all those who attended our scripture study this fall. Special thanks to our team of discussion leaders!

This week we have in All Souls’ Day a commemoration that is linked to the Halloween customs. The big-spending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thursday’s grateful remembrance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan superstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the graveyard, whereas others might actually go to the cemetery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and remember dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The “Day of the Dead” is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days. For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Span-iards were shocked at the spectacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a sym-bol of joy and release from life’s sorrows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the three-day feast from Au-gust to synchronize it with the Christian calendar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elaborate skeleton outfits. The devout spend hours in the cemetery, and there is a lively sense of the communion of saints, the living and the dead. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

What is the PSA? The PSA is an annual campaign to fund the annual budgets of our diocesan ministries. The PSA funds are fully utilized on an annual basis and require replenishing to keep these vital ministries operating. Currently in its 38th year, the PSA was initiated by Bishop Johnson for the people of our growing diocese to join together to build up the Church in Orange County. Our subsequent Bishops McFarland, Brown and now Bishop Vann believe that the PSA is necessary to continue to fund the important ministries and services that serve all Catholics in our Diocese as well as thousands of those in the community.

Why does PSA also support Catholic education? The PSA supports annual tuition assistance grants to Catholic elementary schools in our diocese. For example, the funds raised for the 2015 PSA were granted to schools for the 2015-2016 school year. The funds raised through the For Christ Forever capital campaign are invested in an endowment which is a permanent fund that will provide annual income to the schools to supplement the PSA funding and other resources.

When will I receive a tax acknowledgement for my gift to the PSA? You will receive a tax acknowledgement letter for the PSA in January following that campaign year. If you do not receive a letter, you may contact the Orange Catholic Foundation at the contact information provided below.

How much should I give to the PSA? You are asked to prayerfully discern the amount of your PSA gift. Your sacrificial gift in any amount will be acknowledged as your commitment to our faith and your response to God’s many blessings.

Who do I call if I have questions regarding PSA pledge? Call the Orange Catholic Foundation at (714) 282-3048

or [email protected]

How is the St. Juliana 2017 PSA going? St. Juliana has received 405 pledges totaling $168,427.88. Our goals are 550 pledges and $225,000.
